Materialscientist (talk · contribs) (MS for short) and I 76.2.164.196 (talk · contribs) have been engaged in a friendly exchange regarding the suitability of the sourcing I have provided for some information that I added to The Barefoot Man page, as well as the appropriateness, in general, of that information for inclusion in Wikipedia. The following is our conversation, which can be found on his talk page (See "Other attempts at resolving this dispute that you have attempted").

Please help me with a source citation

MY NOTE TO MS ON HIS TALK PAGE: Hello. Thank you for your note and for your suggestions regarding where to look for help on citing sources. I'm sorry, but I was not able to find any help in that information for how to cite the source of the song titles in that long table that I am trying to add to The Barefoot Man Wikipedia page. So, I need some more specific advice from you ... just how exactly do I cite my source(s) when the source(s) of the song titles are, well, the albums listed in the 2nd column? I mean, I got the song titles from the albums, and I list the albums where I got them from in the 2nd column ... so how do I provide an acceptable source citation for that kind of information? Whatever specific suggestions you can provide would be much appreciated. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.2.164.196 (talk · contribs) 05:54, 19 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

HIS REPLY: Sourcing aside, I don't see a need in listing those songs. We should not dump information on wikipedia, but only summarize most essential details. For example, we usually do [not]my typo create articles for individual songs, unless they are notable; we do not list all publications by an author, only most famous ones. — Materialscientist (talk · contribs) (talk) 06:01, 19 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

MY REPLY: Thank you for your reply. I see your point - this is a lot of information to put out there at once. However, there are numerous precedents to publishing this kind of information on Wikipedia. If you just google the phrase, "list of song titles wikipedia" you will see a rather long list of instances where song lists by various artists have been published on Wikipedia. These are complete song listings, not just notable ones as you suggest is the common practice. And no song lists that I have seen have any other sourcing information on them. Therefore, based on precedent - with respect to both content and sourcing - I respectfully request that my song titles posting be allowed to remain. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.2.164.196 (talk · contribs) 13:25, 19 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

As you can see, I have asked MS for help regarding what kind of citation would be appropriate in this particular case as Wikipedia does not provide any guidance for how to reference songs that have appeared on albums, tapes, or CDs (other than listing the albums, tapes, or CDs they came from, which I have done). Not receiving any guidance from MS, I attempted to add what I thought was an appropriate source citation. However, that was still not sufficient and the content I added was deleted again.

Furthermore, with regard to the suitability of the information itself, MS merely expressed his own opinion, that we “should not” put this kind of information on Wikipedia. He did not cite any rule that prohibited it, only that he preferred that I not do it. I then proceeded to search Wikipedia and found many, many instances of similar information being posted for other recording artists. Therefore, a precedent exists (several hundred of them, actually) for allowing this kind of posting on Wikipeadia. I again pointed this out to MS, but he did not reply or refute this argument for allowing my information to remain on The Barefoot Man page.

Therefore, based on precedent - with respect to both content and sourcing - I respectfully request that my song titles posting on the Barefoot Man be allowed to remain. Furthermore, I am happy to edit my source citation to a more appropriate form or format if I am given specific guidance as to what form or format would be acceptable.

Decision of the Mediation Committee edit

  • Reject. Fails to satisfy prerequisite to mediation #4, "The parties must have first engaged in extensive discussion of the matter in dispute at the article talk page and discussion only through edit summaries will not suffice."
