Alfred Richard ORAGE

edit

Hi. Could anyone please help me for the exact pronunciation of the family name of Alfred Richard ORAGE? What do you suggest for "g"? Could it be pronounced with the phoneme /ʒ/ as /əʊˈɹɑːʒ/ (like the American English pronunciation of garage and British dressage) or just /d͡ʒ/ (as in passage)? Thank you in advance. — Hamid Hassani (talk) 07:36, 6 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

It amuses me to note in passing that orage /ɔʀaʒ/ is French for ‘storm’. —Tamfang (talk) 08:58, 6 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, orage, as a general word, derives from Old French ore etymologically, and means thunderstorm and storm. Thank you indeed! — Hamid Hassani (talk) 09:06, 6 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
This doesn't, however, imply anything about the pronunciation of the British family name; same as Albert Einstein's last name is [aɪnstaɪn] not [aɪnʃtaɪn]. --80.4.147.220 (talk) 09:49, 6 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Does not the explanatory note (immediately preceding the references) in the article Alfred Richard Orage explain the pronunciation variants adequately? Deor (talk) 14:06, 6 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
At least on my computer, nothing happens when you click the notelink. Maybe that happened to the OP as well. If so, try scrolling down the page to the section "Notes". Loraof (talk) 16:07, 6 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The note in question reads "His family name was pronounced locally as if written "Orridge" /ˈɒrɪdʒ/. The man himself preferred a French-like pronunciation /oʊˈrɑːʒ/. The British as well may prefer the former variant, Americans the latter. Wymspen (talk) 17:33, 6 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
It was added by me after I've seen the topic. I did not think about reporting here. If the notelink does not work, it must be a technical problem on the reader's side.--Lüboslóv Yęzýkin (talk) 00:07, 7 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not certain that there is any universal agreement in the UK about this sort of name; Nigel Farage has been the butt of some humour at Prime Minister's Questions about this, see PMQs: David Cameron, Nigel Farage's name pronunciation is 'poncey' (27Apr16) (BTW, "poncey" means "pretentious" in this context). Ok, thank you guys! — Hamid Hassani (talk) 08:28, 8 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Japanese translation

edit

Please translate this passage in this interview for me:

太田:たしかにこの感じは出ないでしょう~。ところで森高さんって今でもドラム叩いているんですかね?

テイ:いやいや、実は……。この“SOMETIME SAMURAI”は当時作ってたものですよ。あの『THE SOUND MUSEUM』(97年)の頃に、“GBI(German Bold Italic)”(『THE SOUND MUSEUM』収録曲、feat.

Thank you very much! Beyoncetan (talk) 17:54, 6 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

This is a rough translation with Wikilinks added.
(Article title) 12th - Guest: Towa Tei, (2)
Ota: This feeling won't go away. Am I still banging Moritaki's drum?
Tay: No, actually.... This "Sometime Samurai" is what I was making. By that time "THE SOUND MUSEUM" (1997), "GBI (German Bold Italic)" (see THE SOUND MUSEUM, featuring Kylie Minogue) albums made for Kylie, I had been saying there is this song.
Ota: Oh, oh! So what does it do?! (Note: Mr. Ota is mad about Kylie Minogue.)
Tay: That's right. The song recording was completed about 2 years ago. There was no change for a long time until I first met Kylie. How was it? Is Kylie mad about "Sometime Samurai"?
Ota: It is the best! Recovering the tracks, Kylie made me really happy and I (word omitted: Koryaku).
AllBestFaith (talk) 21:53, 6 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@AllBestFaith: Thank you so so much for your translation! But I do not really understand it clearly this line though: "By that time "THE SOUND MUSEUM" (1997), "GBI (German Bold Italic)" albums made for Kylie" - does this line mean that the song "GBI" was originally made for an album of Kylie? Beyoncetan (talk) 07:42, 7 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Beyoncetan:I don't know any other performer than Kylie Minogue who has recorded "GBI". For readers who wonder what this is all about, "GBI" is an avant-garde recording by the Australian pop songstress who breathes voluptuous intensity into the name of an unremarkable typeface in lyrics like "You'll like my sense of style, I fit just like a glove".
@Beyoncetan: I can't get more sense out of the Japanese interview but a better translator may offer an answer. Towa Tei was collaborating on similar sounding songs with the group Deee-Lite from 1988 onward, and Wikipedia says GBI is co-written by TT and KM in 1996. Kylie's promotion video was surely part of the same conception. But I shall not add guesses to the article GBI (German Bold Italic) whose history records you as a major contributor. AllBestFaith (talk) 16:14, 7 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@AllBestFaith: Well, thank you so much for helping... :"( Beyoncetan (talk) 16:41, 7 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Beyoncetan: @AllBestFaith: That translation is inaccurate. Here's my attempt:
Ōta: Certainly it wouldn't have the same feel(?). So Moritaka is still playing the drums? [出る is "come out / be apparent" (sense 2)]
Tei: No, no, actually... this song, "SOMETIME SAMURAI", was made then. When I/they said at the time of "THE SOUND MUSEUM" ('97), there was a song other than "GBI" that was made for Kylie's album but was shelved, I/they meant this song.
Ōta: Ohhh!!!... Is that right??!! (Note: Ōta is a Kylie Minogue fanatic.) [なんです here is なのです, not 何です]
Tei: That's right. Although the song was re-recorded around the end of the year before last. I hadn't seen Kylie in a long time, but she hadn't changed at all. How was "SOMETIME SAMURAI" to a Kylie fanatic?
Ōta: Fantastic!!! I tell you, I was really happy that Kylie made a comeback (remainder omitted).
"Remainder omitted" (後略) is in the original text. -- BenRG (talk) 22:31, 8 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@BenRG: Thank you thank you so much BenRG! You're truly my saviour! And can you translate me these passages too? :(
1 - もっと言わねぇよ(笑)。……でも安かったよ。こっちから一方的にお願いしたわけじゃないからね。三軒茶屋にスタジオがあった時に、飲んで帰ってきたら、なんか絵の書いたファックスが届いてて、そこに「Music with you! Kylie. Call Me」とか書いてあったんじゃないかな。カイリーはユーロビートから脱却したいっていう葛藤の時期だったから、彼女が日本に遊びにきた時に三茶で何曲かつくってみたの。それが「Sometime Samurai」と「GBI(German Bold Italic)」。
Thank you so so much :"( Beyoncetan (talk) 07:44, 9 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
1. I'll say no more (laughs). ... But it was cheap. Because it wasn't a unilateral request from me [/us]. When there was a studio in Sangenjaya, I came home from drinking to find a fax had arrived that had a picture of some sort on it, and "Music with you! Kylie. Call Me" or something was written on it, I think. It was when there was a conflict about Kylie wanting to get out of Eurobeat, so when she visited Japan, we tried making some songs at Sanja [=Sangenjaya]. They were "Sometime Samurai" and "GBI".
2. Kylie especially liked "Sometime Samurai", but the record company didn't get it, and it was ignored forever. Anyway, I remembered it at the time of "FLASH", and contacted Kylie for the first time in ages, and she said "I can't get over that song either. I should be able to sing it better now, so I'd like to rerecord it. Can you come to London?", and we rerecorded it. The song is on Kylie's live DVD (among other things) so she really liked it, I guess. Given that backstory, it definitely wasn't expensive (laughs).
(I have to say that unlike AllBestFaith I know nothing about these musicians. But that's probably mostly right.) -- BenRG (talk) 06:20, 10 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@BenRG: Woooow! Thank you thank you so so much! Thank you so much for spending time helping me BenRG! Truly truly big thanks!!! Beyoncetan (talk) 10:23, 10 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
