Wikipedia:Portal peer review/Archive/June 2007

This archive contains the peer review requests that are older than one month, have received no response in the last two weeks, are not signed, have become featured portal candidates, or did not follow the "How to use this page" principles in some way. If one of your requests has been moved here by mistake, please accept our apologies and copy it back to the main peer review page with your signature (~~~~).

Any comments are welcome, particularly anything that would help the portal to reach featured portal status.-- Waggers 17:07, 6 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey,

  • Intro - The shortcut is really taking up space. Personally I don't like them on the main page(talk would be ok), but you must have it, please put it somewhere else.
    • The map shouldn't need a caption. Do you have a seal or coat of arms you could use as well?
  • Related portals - Images would be nice to have.
  • Articles - Images shouldn't need captions.
  • Categories - The way it's laid out <categorytree> would work better.
  • Pics - Pics must fit on 800x600 screen. A photo credit is needed. Center the description.
  • All selected boxes - In the archives, instead of just a link to previous selections, please show it the way it appeared on the portal page.
  • Projects - Perhaps you could use Wikipedia:WikiProject England and Wikipedia:WikiProject UK subdivisions.
  • Hampshire Topics - Should be simply "Topics". Hampshire is what the portal is about, not a topic within. Seems like you should be able to find more topics, such as cities, football clubs, etc... The topics section should be fairly comprehensive.
  • Rotation - The "show new selections" button should be used.

Anyways, with the changes, you should be on you're way. Joe I 19:34, 7 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks very much for all that, some useful comments in there. There are one or two I disagree with (relating to the intro section) but I'll get to work on implementing the others. For the record, here's where I disagree:
  • WP:SHORT says that shortcut boxes should be at the top of the page
  • I've given the map a caption to make the distinction clear between the administrative county and the historical county - the portal includes Southampton and Portsmouth, so is about the latter not the former. But I'll look for a coat of arms or a map of the wider area. (In fact, if/when time permits, I'll try and emulate the map at Portal:Kent).
As I said, thanks of the comments and please don't take the disagreements personally, what you've said is very useful. Thanks again, Waggers 14:07, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I am hoping to improve this Portal to featured status, any comments and ideas will be gratefully received. - Olive Oil -ŢάĽɮḍőпє - 01:45, 3 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, ready?

  • Tabs - Rename "Main Kent Portal" to "Main Page" or "Main Portal Page", and Cats and topics, I see no featured content on that page, so I would remove that from the tab.
  • Intro - I like the map, but it seems alittle big, maybe doing as alot of geography portals, putting the flag and coat of arms above or below, such as Portal:Australia, but do keep your map, it's nice except fix the redirects and disambig links.
  • Articles - Link the bolded article titles for easy access, such as on the main page.
    • Archives - Use some system where the actual summary(as it appears on the main portal page) shows. There are a number of ways to do this.
  • News - Link the date, add a more... link to news source, and add an archive.
  • Bio - Same as articles about the archive. Pics to large for 800x600.
  • Pics - Center description, same about the archive as bios and articles. Pics to large for 800x600.
  • DYK - Why is there an anniversary in there? Either remove it or start an on this day type box.
  • The County - Is this box supposed to have rotated content, or is that the only fact about the county?
  • History - Either integrate this into cats and topics, or add a tidbit, such as the county box.
  • Related portals - Pics could be a bit smaller.
  • Wikimedia - Should be on the front page.
  • Main Topics - Either unlink the red links, or make em go somewhere. If there are any lists, add them.
  • Things you can do tab - Remove the table of contents. The whole page should be under portal namespace instead of wikiproject.
    • Would suggest removing the participants, that can be found on the project page.
    • Pending tasks should be merged into things you can do below it.
    • Things you can do should have aleast a few things in it.

Seems like alot, but it's all fairly small stuff. :) Joe I 02:23, 3 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your thoughts, i'll be implementing them. - Olive Oil -ŢάĽɮḍőпє - 08:40, 3 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Any and all comments welcome, I am attempting to bring this up to featured status (and have already recieved cosiderable help from Hossen27 and Scott M gall). I'll do my best to respond in a timely fashion. Carom 19:56, 16 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Carom!
Section of portal Notes
Introduction Needs to be expanded.
Featured article
Selected picture I suggest aligning the captions to the left.
Should there be a space after "Credit:"?
Selected anniversaries The pages for the other months' anniversaries need to be created.
The pages for all the days in March have been created except for March 10 (link).
Did you know... It's good that you're randomizing DYK's.
Selected biography Instead of the "Read more..." link, the person's name should be linked at the beginning, like you do in the featured article.
Von Manstein's name isn't in bold here.
Selected equipment As said above, instead of the "Read more..." link, the equipment's name should be linked at the beginning, like you do in the featured article.
Quotes "More Quotes..." should be "More quotes..."
Instead of "Quotes," the header should be "Selected quote."
Topics Looks good. =)
Featured content Wow.
Things you can do
Categories An alternative is to have a category tree (example).
Related portals I don't think the font size has to be smaller.
Associated Wikimedia
Overall You may consider adding a border around the portal as in World War I Portal.
Some quick comments off the top of my head. Good work! — S.D. 23:56, 16 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
OK, thianks for your input. I have started implementing some of your suggestions, hopefully I will be able to finish next week. Carom 19:48, 23 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, few more: Intro - please expand, there is much to say. Add a map, such as Image:Second world war europe animation small.gif or similar

  • Pics - credit should appear directly under the photo, then the description. Description should hold atleast one link to an article.
  • Articles - Try standardizing the pic sizes.
  • Quotes - would suggest using {{cquote}}, and add a suggest section
  • Featured content - Would suggest adding one more column to cut the length a bit
  • Cats - You can make the cat tree multi columned as well, shouldn't take up to much space and show the whole structure. <div style="-moz-column-count:2; column-count:2;"> <categorytree>Category:World War II</categorytree> </div>
  • Portals - add atleast Portal:World War I if not Portal:Communism, Portal:Fascism, Portal:Nazism(not up to shape), Portal:History, Portal:Weapons of mass destruction as well.
  • Missing wikiprojects - I realize they're in the things to do box, but not clearly labeled if they're not to have a box of their own.
  • Anniversaries - Why is March 17th blank? If there are none, please add a note saying to the extent , if you know of any ann. on this date please add them here.

And, you're off! Hehe :) Joe I 05:31, 17 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

OK, thanks for you suggestions - I have started to implement them. A couple of queries: as far as the photo credits go, there doesn't seem to be any consensus on where they should appear - see Portal:War, for example. And as far as WikiProjects go, I'm not entirely sure what you're asking/suggesting - can you clarify please? Carom 19:52, 23 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Most featured now use the credit directly under the photo, rational is that you give credit for the photo rather than the description. Projects, since you mainly only have one it could stay as is(heading for the things you can do), tho a separate[[ box would be nice. Portal:Military of the United States/WikiProjects, Portal:American Civil War/WikiProjects, Portal:Cold War/WikiProjects. Joe I 20:40, 23 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
For March 17, there is:
which happened at the same time as WWII. — S.D. 13:00, 17 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This portal peer review request is for recommendations to help improve The Sustainable development Portal to featured portal status. Thanks. RichardF 16:23, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like you need to add links to different WikiProject that falls within its scope. And of course, get more participants. OhanaUnited 07:42, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, any suggestions for other projects to add? It's not a portal's responsibility to get more project participants, so I assume that's not what you meant. As far as getting more participants to work on the portal, feel free to pitch in! ;-) On their respective talk pages, I invited members of all listed projects to participate in contributing to the portal. I also made a recruiting announcement at the Community Portal that will run until 5/29/07. In addition, I added {{portalpar}} to most of the articles linked here as another way to get more editors to look at the portal. Any other recruiting suggestions? RichardF 14:48, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Looking great... how about adding it to Wikipedia:WikiProject Environment? Cause renewable energy, climate change, and substability all fall within the scope of environment. However, I'm not sure if WP:E wants a portal itself because Portal:Environment is only a disambig page. If you want to make a new portal, give this a try because there should be tons of information available. And sorry for not able to help you much, because I'm not too good with portals. OhanaUnited 01:33, 26 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I don't think I've ever seen a disambig page for a portal before. Definitely unusual! I added the portals on the disambig page as "related portals" on the project page. I see you added this to the Environment project cat too. That should be enough connections for now. I wouldn't mind helping make an Energy portal, but I haven't decided if or what the next portal I start will be. RichardF 03:03, 26 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think you can change the disambig page to an actual portal page. OhanaUnited 04:39, 26 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I could... I'm just not so sure I will. ;-) RichardF 14:58, 26 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
