List of Puerto Rican birds edit

I would like to elevate this list to featured list status. Any suggestions are welcomed especially regarding images and the introduction. Joelito (talk) 16:16, 12 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Comparing this article to List of North American birds, List of Florida birds, List of Kansas birds, List of Oklahoma birds I would recommend:

  • Writing a short description for each species
I have added descriptions for the majority of families. I will try to add the missing descriptions soon. Joelito (talk) 20:13, 13 May 2006 (UTC) Family descriptions are complete. Joelito (talk) 15:19, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • getting more pictures if at all possible.
I am in the process of adding pictures of the common species. Joelito (talk) 20:13, 13 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • adding a standard table of contents instead of the table you created - it looks crammed and harder to read.
    • I will change the TOC to something more readable. Joelito (talk) 13:53, 13 May 2006 (UTC) Changed custom ToC to standard ToC. Joelito (talk) 16:52, 18 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, I dont think this list is too far away from featured list. - Tutmosis 23:59, 12 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think that Tutmosis meant to suggest a short description of each Family, not each species. My exxperience at FL is it that it won't be promoted without the descriptions for each family. (You can cut and paste the descriptions from one of the existing lists). You probably will need more pictures as well. I like to put in a picture for every family that isn't comprised solely of accidental, casual, extinct or extiirpated species, but then I may put in too many. Good work! Thanks for the suggestions so far. I will put short descriptions for each family and I will add more pictures. Hopefully I can find pictures for all 16 endemic species. Joelito (talk) 13:53, 13 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Another thought occurred to me. You used Clements as your taxonomical authority. It seems to be accepted here that the AOU checklist should be used for North American birds. The AOU area includes Puerto Rico. You might consider using the AOU taxonomy. (I haven't compared them closely so I'm not sure what, if any, the differences are.) (The AOU checklist is linked from the Reference section of the North America list). Dsmdgold 14:00, 13 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Using the AOU checklist creates some taxonomic discrepancies which I wanted to avoid. Example: the Osprey is categorized in the Pandionidae family in the Wikipedia article which uses the taxonomy of the Handbook of Birds of the World and the AOU includes it in the Accipitridae family. Also some species that occur in Puerto Rico (mainly introduced species) are not included in the AOU checklist. Joelito (talk) 14:45, 13 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough. Dsmdgold 10:12, 14 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
