Wikipedia:Online Ambassadors/Apply/Titodutta

  1. Why do you want to be a Wikipedia Ambassador?
I always try to help new editors. I am a member of welcoming committee, Barnstar awarding team, Wikipedia Wikipedia:Adopt-a-user and WP:CVUA. I hope I'll be able to help more people and also (importantly) will get opportunity to learn new things here. I believe when I am teaching something, I am also learning too (in answer 11 below there is a link, I told the same thing in the Google interview too).
  2. In three sentences or less, summarize your involvement with Wikimedia projects.
Joining Wikipedia in April 2011 now I have 18000+ edits, created 140 articles, have filemover, rollbacker, reviewer, autpatrolled rights. I do not have any wish to become an admin in next 18–24 months and currently I have been mainly working in WP:India articles.
  3. Please indicate a few articles to which you have made significant content contributions. (e.g. DYK, GA, FA, major revisions/expansions/copyedits).
Here is a list –Swami Vivekananda, Bhagavad Gita, Subhas Chandra Bose, Aryabhata, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, Sita, Ritwik Ghatak
  4. How have you been involved with welcoming and helping new users on Wikipedia?
    Yes, I regularly do it.
  5. What do you see as the most important ways we could welcome newcomers or help new users become active contributors?
I feel, new editors (and specially their good works) should be encouraged. I have given lots of barnstars to new editors for their good works. I have seen really happy faces after getting their first barnstar from me. Examples: Discussion 01, Discussion 2. This was really a good experience for me.
  6. Have you had major conflicts with other editors? Blocks or bans? Involvement in arbitration? Feel free to offer context, if necessary.
Yes once. An editor was making disruptive edits in an article. He has 9–10 WP:SOCK accounts. I tried to talk to him many times but never got any reply. Finally after doing WP:SPI, all those accounts were blocked. I have seen another editor for a new account is now making similar edits in those articles where those sock accounts used to edit. But this time, their edits are much better. I am not sure if it is the same editor, I have discussed this with an admin. He has recently uploaded a copyrighted file without any fair use rationale. I am watching that editor's edits. If I see he is making good edits this time, I'll be help him (if needed)!
  7. How often do you edit Wikipedia and check in on ongoing discussions? Will you be available regularly for at least two hours per week, in your role as a mentor?
I am available everyday (for last 3 month I spend 6 hours+ everyday in Wikipedia (English)).
  8. How would you make sure your students were not violating Copyright laws?
The first thing I do to check copyright violation– For text: copying a portion from the text and searching in world wide web (I use Google search) to see if I get any matching result. Of course I don't count WP:MIRRORS and try to find only those web pages which were published before the Wikipedia article was created (or the information added in it). Google advanced search time range help here. That's how I found copyright violation of the article Lokenath Brahmachari. Duplication detector is also very helpful. In some articles I have seen editors directly copy from a page and add the same page as reference. So, following these references has also been helpful for me to find copyright detection. For images I am currently using– reverse image search process. Advanced Google search tools (specially time range search) are very helpful.
  9. If one of your students had an issue with Copyright Violation how would resolve it?
When one of my student has an issue with copyright violation, this has actually two issues 1) He has already done a mistake which needs to be corrected. I 'll try to fix it myself ASAP by removing those portion from an article which is clearly violating copyright 2) He should be given suggestions/tips/friendly advices on how he can avoid such mistakes in future. I'll talk to him in details about this issue. If I see lots of my students are facing this issue, I'll create one or two page(s) under my userpage so that I can ask them to see it immediately whenever needed. I'll answer their questions and I'll encourage them to ask questions too so that they can fully understand how they can about such mistakes in future.
  10. In your _own_ words describe what Copyright Violation is.
Copyright violation is unauthorized use someone else's copyrighted work. "Unauthorized" means when we don't have permission to use it. "Permission" means their written permission (preferably) where they have clearly stated they are allowing to use their content. If a student asks me this question, at first, I'll ask them to go to any website they like and check the "License" "Permission" "Terms of use" etc (Which is generally located at the bottom of the page or navbar). If a site has notice "All rights reserved Copyright ABC 2007–2012" and if we use the content of the site without permission, that's copyright violation. The page I am currently editing now, at the bottom of the page it is written "Text is available under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License..." Now, if I copy paste content from this site in my blog/website without attribution (I mean the "terms of use" mentioned here), that is also a copyright violation.
  11. What else should we know about you that is relevant to being a Wikipedia Ambassador?
About my experiences (other than Wikipedia)– before joining Wikipedia I have volunteered in official Gmail Help Forum and Orkut Help Forum and became Top Contributor (actually I am still Top Contributor there). You can see my (our) interview in official Google Blog! Here too I have helped many people.
Thank you
