Wikipedia:Newbie treatment at Criteria for speedy deletion/Smartse

I (as Organismluvva) created a number of very short articles about organisms with just enough information to survive {{db-nocontext}} but with no sources given. The organisms had mostly been featured in news articles so I knew a quick google would be enough for people to check that they weren't hoaxes. None of these articles (Munidopsis andamanica, Notoliparis kermadecensis, Swima bombiviridis, Rhizomucor miehei, Swima and Phytophthora cajani) were tagged for deletion. Swima bombiviridis was tagged by CorenSearchBot pretty quickly, I guess as the article was so small this could be expected. I added a note on the talk page saying that I had written it myself and User:Hairhorn removed the notice 7 hours later. Perhaps it would be an idea for CorenSearchBot not to tag very short articles, or alternatively to welcome users as well as giving them a copyright notice. Funnily enough an IP (User:152.3.249.37) came along after a few days and added a few references and stubs that got through NPP, they were duly welcomed.

I then created two other marginally notable articles, Roger Allen Leigh and Watan Group, both were tagged as {{a7}} within one or two minutes of creation. Again I had made them as very short articles and they are probably only just notable. Being hit with lots of templates was a bit startling as a new, good faith editor. Both speedies were declined after I added {{hangon}}, Roger Allen Leigh after 80 minutes, being a well published academic, it is pretty clear that they meet WP:ACADEMIC, even if there aren't a great number of sources available. The tag was removed from Watan Group after 3 hours to be replaced by an AfD tag where it remains at the moment. I've edited it some more with my main account but won't be !voting in the AfD.

The personal welcome from JohnCD was really good to get, particularly pointing towards the biology wikiproject as a place to get some advice.

Overall I was fairly pleased with the way things went. The a7 tag on Roger Allen Leigh was a bit concerning as the article pretty much only linked to Professor of Botany, Cambridge University so it would have been clear they are notable. It is probably right for Watan Group to go to AfD, it is only just notable. It was good to see that the organism article all survived untagged though which is a different experience to Durova's above. Smartse (talk) 18:11, 16 November 2009 (UTC)
