Enjoy A GLAM Day Out!
A GLAM Day Out: Cultural Collaboration through Wikipedia is a day-long event, held Thursday, June 26, 2014, offering information about institutionally and personally working with Wikipedia. People are welcome to attend whatever parts of the day match with their interests and the time they have available; see the schedule below for times and details.

Invited speakers Dominic McDevitt-Parks and Dorothy Howard will discuss content collaboration and metrics for evaluating institutional involvement with Wikipedia. Learn how to edit pages in a workshop with Mary Mark Ockerbloom, and dive in for some hands on experience editing Wikipedia articles in our edit-a-thon. No previous Wikipedia experience necessary!

In celebration of June as LGBT Pride Month, guest speaker and archivist Bob Skiba will talk about GLAM/LGBT initiatives in the Philadelphia area. He will also discuss LGBT content sources, as an introduction to the "Wiki Loves Pride" themed edit-a-thon. Everyone is welcome. Editors are encouraged to bring materials from their institutions or personal collections, and to work on whatever topics they wish, whether LGBT-related or reflecting other areas of interest. Experienced Wikipedia coaches will be available to help and to answer questions.

The Chemical Heritage Foundation's museum will offer curated museum tours, and we will have a list of heritage sites in the area for people who want to explore or take photographs for Wikipedia. We will also have a list of places in the area where you can eat lunch. We hope everyone will come to the evening's reception, and help us celebrate the Wikipedian-In-Residence program's engagement with the GLAM community over this past year.

Dominic McDevitt-Parks is a Digital Content Specialist at the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration and a Cultural Partnerships Coordinator, Wikimedia District of Columbia. As an employee of the U.S. National Archives (NARA), he works to make NARA holdings more accessible to the public by making them available to Wikipedia for use in articles. By providing content, data, assistance, expertise, and incentives from the institution Dominic facilitates the work of other Wikimedians and helps to develop a vibrant active community of editors on Wikipedia.

In his talk, Dominic will discuss contributing digital content to Wikimedia Commons, addressing issues such as copyright, Wikimedia Commons licensing, and bulk uploading of content to Wikimedia Commons.

Session: 1.45-2.30 p.m., Guest speaker, Metrics for evaluation

Dorothy Howard, Wikipedian-in-Residence of the Metropolitan New York Library Council, has facilitated multi-institutional Wikipedia projects among New York galleries, libraries, archives, and cultural institutions since August, 2013.

In her talk Dorothy will discuss Edit-a-Thon and project documentation, things to do before and after Wikipedia events, Wikimetrics, and using outside tools to trace institutional Wikipedia projects. The latter part of the presentation will also consider different models for measuring success in Wikipedia projects including: editor retention, diversity, language compatibility, page-views, readability, and article quality.

Museum Tours

Session: 11.00 or 12.00, Docents in the Chemical Heritage Foundation museum will lead guided tours at 11.00 and 12.00 o'clock, or you can drop in throughout the day to see the exhibits. Be sure to visit Suited for Space, the current exhibit in the Clifford Hach Gallery on the first floor!

Wikipedia How-to Edit Workshop

Session: 11.00-12.00 a.m., Mary Mark Ockerbloom, Workshop leader

Mary Mark Ockerbloom, Wikipedian in Residence at the Chemical Heritage Foundation, will demystify Wikipedia culture and describe how Wikipedia works. In the second part of the presentation, Mary will walk through the creating an account, searching, editing pages, and creating new pages. Bring your computer and you can create your own username and password (or try this at home in advance!), make your first edit, and practice editing in your sandbox.

Guest speaker and archivist Bob Skiba will introduce the edit-a-thon with a brief outline of sources of LGBT content. Editors are encouraged to bring materials from their institutions or personal collections, and to work on whatever topics they wish, whether LGBT-related or reflecting other areas of interest. Everyone is welcome. Experienced Wikipedia coaches will be available to help and to answer questions.
