She is the recipient an Obie Award, a Bessie Award, and the 2008 Ethyl Eichelberger Award, along with numerous grants from the NEA, NYSCA, DCA, MAP, NYFA and others. Williams was selected to participate in the 2019 In Practice exhibition at SculptureCenter and is among the inaugural cohort of artists commissioned by The Shed, a new art space in NYC. Panel on Wikipedia & Education

edit

Heather Hart (Black Lunch Table): The Black Lunch Table (BLT), first staged in 2005, is an ongoing collaboration between visual artist and SAIC professor, Jina Valentine, and New York-based public artist Heather Hart. The BLT’s primary aim is the production of discursive sites, wherein cultural producers engage in dialogue on a variety of critical issues. BLT mobilizes a democratic (re)writing of contemporary history by animating discourse around and among the people living it. BLT provides a critical platform for exchange, currently staging nomadic Wikipedia edit-a-thons and community roundtable discussions worldwide.

Sherry Antoine (AfroCROWD): Afro Free Culture Crowdsourcing Wikimedia (AfroCROWD) is an outreach initiative and Wikimedia usergroup which seeks to increase awareness of Wikimedia and free knowledge, culture, and software movements among potential editors of African descent. Since its launch during Black Wiki History Month in 2015, AfroCROWD has sensitized thousands in its target audience about free culture crowdsourcing and the need to close the multicultural and gender gaps in Wikipedia.

Ryan McGrady (Wiki Education): Ryan is Scholars & Scientists Program Manager at the Wiki Education Foundation, a non-profit organization that builds bridges between academia and Wikipedia. He is also a volunteer Wikipedia contributor, and board member of Wikimedia NYC.

Megan Wacha (CUNY, Wikimedia NYC): Megan advances equitable access to information and publishing through her dual roles in libraries and the Wikimedia movement. As the Scholarly Communications Librarian for the City University of New York, she leads CUNY's 31 libraries in the development and management of CUNY’s open access institutional repository, CUNY Academic Works. Megan is also an active Wikipedian and the President of Wikimedia NYC, a volunteer run non-profit committed to connecting New Yorkers and New York institutions with Wikipedia, Wikimedia, and the larger free culture movement.

Press Release

Pratt Institute Libraries to host an Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon March 11th, 2019 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Press Contact: Cyree Jarelle Johnson

Pratt Institute Libraries’ second annual Wikipedia Edit-a-thon in collaboration with Art + Feminism will take place on March 19, 2019 from 8:30 AM-8:00PM. This year’s edits will center the contributions of Nonbinary & Gender Nonconforming artists, and is designed to improve coverage of gender, feminism and the arts on Wikipedia overall.

The edit-a-thon will include tutorials for the beginner Wikipedian, ongoing editing support, reference materials, and refreshments. People of all gender identities and expressions are invited to participate, particularly women, nonbinary people, and gender nonconforming people.

Wikipedia’s gender trouble is well-documented. Over 30% of artists honored in the Trans 100 do not have Wikipedia pages. In a 2011 survey, the Wikimedia Foundation found that less than 10% of its contributors were women.

Art+Feminism’s Edit-a-thons and other initiatives make an impact on the gender gap through crucial improvements to gender, feminism and art-related subjects on Wikipedia. Since 2014, Art+Feminism edit-a-thons have taken place across the world, creating and improving over 11,000 articles.

A diverse group of Wikipedians and artists will present their work, providing scholarly praxis to the Edit-a-thon. Among those featured are Jennifer Miller, founder of Circus Amok and Kiyan Williams, a studio and performing artist from Newark, New Jersey currently finishing an MFA at Columbia University. The day will culminate in a panel on using Wikipedia in the classroom.

The Pratt Institute Libraries Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon is sponsored by Pratt Academic Senate and the Pratt Institute Libraries and organized by Amy Ballmer, Cheryl Costello, and Cyree Jarelle Johnson.
