  • When: Monday 23 April 2007.
  • Time: They open at 7am. Meetup proper from 7:30 till 9:00 or when you have to leave

Planning

Location

edit

I suggest the criteria be:

  • Somewhere near to the Hilton Hotel so Jimbo can get to his conference easily
  • Somewhere cheap but edible so as many people (students etc) who want to go can..
  • A public wireless access point would be nice
  • Room enough for 20 people
  • Open by 7:30 am.
  • Not noisy

Some original research found:

  • Zuma caffe, 56 Gouger Street. $8.90+$3 for full breakfast and coffee. Sniff of Internode wireless from accross the street. Has some atmosphere.
  • Cibo expresso, 41 Gouger Street. $3 coffeee. $6-$8 rolls, $7.50 museli. Internode wireless access point.
  • Ecco expresso bar, 1A Victoria Square (arcade next to Hilton), $14 full breakfast and coffee.
  • Baked on the Square, Victoria Square (corner with Grote St), $8.50 bacon & eggs with toast, $11.90 bacon & eggs with the lot. $2.60 coffee (my 2nd choice, go here when we outgrow Zuma caffe).
  • Market arcade - didn't check all these out, one near Ecco expresso bar had $8.50 for breakfast+drink but might be a bit of a squeeze.
Pick your favourite, give us a time and whammo! We could debate specifics for ages, but there is no need to. michael talk 22:05, 14 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ok Zuma Caffe it is as long as numbers not much more than 20 then may need to move. Alex Sims 22:13, 14 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm. We have possibly 22 attendees now. Is this going to be OK with Zuma?--cj | talk 16:51, 26 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
OK, we're up to 27 potential attendees. What's ZUMA's capacity?--cj | talk 08:00, 30 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'll check with them next week. We'll be out the back (in the market area). Alex Sims 10:00, 30 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
27 (or more) will be fine. I just need to confirm rough numbers the Friday before with Zuma. The area out the back is quite large. Alex Sims 04:10, 3 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I've confirmed the numbers/booked with Zuma so we're all set! Alex Sims 03:56, 19 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Just in case anyone's confused (highly unlikely considering the central nature of the location, but still), here's a link to a map... Cheers! – Riana 14:43, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Publicity

edit

Some publicity is required at least:

  1. notify Adelaide Wikipedians via Talk Pages.
  2. Solicit invitations of geographically local Wikipedia users.
  3. Use other mediums outside of Wikipedia to advertise to non-Wikipedia users; like classifieds advertising and word of mouth.

Alex Sims 11:12, 14 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think we 'advise' of the meeting in that order, don't think numbers should be too much of a issue given the audience. If we invite non-Wikipedia users, i would suggest letting the open source software community know (LinuxSA, AUUG) and the BarCampAdelaide guys. Derek.munneke 01:40, 15 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think we'll need to publicise externally. Considering the nature of the meetup, a smaller group is probably preferable.--cj | talk 06:55, 15 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I've drawn up a potential spam list of users listed on WP:ADEL and in Category:Wikipedians in South Australia. See User:Cyberjunkie/User links/Spam list. We may want to trim that down to the most active users. Also, we need to draft an invite to post to each.--cj | talk 07:17, 15 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
A message might be titled "Adelaide Breakfast Meetup on 23rd April 2007" and the text "Apologies if you're already aware of this, but the second Adelaide Meetup will take place on Monday 23rd of April at Zuma caffe, 56 Gouger St Adelaide. The meeting is at 7:30 am for breakfast and Jimbo Wales will be attending. Please indicate if you might attend.". I don't support trimming down to active users. If we got 100 (which I doubt) I'd be rapt (and we would need to change venue but another nearby venue could cope). CJ can you organise this message to go out? Alex Sims 10:53, 19 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Keeping within the constraints of the venue was my concern. But if everyone is fine with the possibility of having to find a larger venue, then I'm happy to deliver the invite to those on the spamlist.--cj | talk 12:22, 19 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Did you send the 'invite' to the User:Cyberjunkie/User links/Spam list? If not, i think it should be done. Derek.munneke 18:08, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'll get to it ;)--cj | talk 22:35, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ooo, There are a few sock puppets in that spam list... I would hate to see them get a hold of this link and see what they do to this page. Most of them have been blocked though. --An Apple a day keeps -The Doctor- Away.. Or does it! (talk)(contribs) 13:51, 21 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm just checking over the users on the list (removing the socks) and have noticed several have openly stated themselves to be minors; not only does this raise issues vis-á-vis our child protection policy, it also gives rise to the question of inviting minors to this event. Our friends in the West have already had a discussion regarding this, and resolved that minors may only attend if accompanied by a legal guardian. Seems fair?--cj | talk 01:42, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I would put the cutoff at sixteen, but it sounds fair. michael talk 01:57, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like I made the cut off by one day. Now I am as so called a 'minor' at the moment but unfortunately under my circumstances I am under GOM (Guardianship of the minister) thus not being able to have a guardian present at the time even though it should be ok as I will be sixteen at the time of the meeting. An Apple a day keeps -The Doctor- Away.. Or does it! (talk)(contribs) 11:47, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Cyberjunkie, are you able to send the 'invite' to the User:Cyberjunkie/User links/Spam list this weekend? If not, someone else needs to do it as the meetup is only four weeks away and people will appreciate the notice. Alex Sims 10:40, 23 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Done. Sorry about the delay.--cj | talk 14:22, 23 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
A question about this age thing: Will I be needed to drag a parent along, since I will be turning 16 the day before this? --Reploidof20xx (TALK) 03:13, 24 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Organisation

edit

To make things run smoothly we'll need (volunteers please):

Just bring along 40 sticky labels and a texta, in fact I've probably got 36 left over from last time :-) Alex Sims 04:12, 3 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good! :) – Riana 06:43, 3 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Likely attendance

edit

Please sign here and give some indication of how likely you will actually turn up. Minors must be accompanied by legal guardian.

Definite: I am there!

WikiCensus

edit

Wikipedians earnestly completing the WikiCensus

I thought a WikiCensus of Wikipedians present might be fun as an icebreaker (and provide some insights into ourselves). I'll bring some sheets with questions and squares to collect dots on them and provide 10 sticky dots per person to put against alternatives (I recall the Australian Democrats doing this at the Royal Adelaide Show some time ago, it's quick, anonymous and collates the results instantly). Some questions I've thought of are

  • Age/Gender (10x10 year blocks x 2 boxes)= 20 alternatives
  • Are you non-editor/editor/admin/meta
  • Editing for days/months/years
  • Education Level school/uni/postgrad
  • Employment Status student/part time/full time/unemployed
  • Hours you spend editing each week
  • Hours you would like to spend editing each week

Any comments? Alex Sims 04:03, 19 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds like fun! It had better be a pretty quick one, because we won't get more than about an hour and a half, right? But I like the idea as an icebreaker :) – Riana 12:14, 19 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Post meetup

A much larger group this time! Would be nice if folk came forth and identifed themselves.

As you can see this needs a bit of editing and a lot of other things need to be done. Would be nice if folk came forth and identifed themselves.

So, all in all an ok gathering. Please help with the summary on Wikipedia:Meetup/Adelaide if you can. Can anyone confirm who or many was in attendance? Also, has anyone any photos they might like to upload?--cj | talk 14:47, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Who took photos? I can't remember... – Riana 15:13, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I know Michael had one of himself, but I remember being snapped by someone – whom I unfortunately did not get to talk with – across the table from us.--cj | talk 15:40, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think Alex Sims took a few. However, I'd be unsurprised if they didn't turn out great - it was pretty dark. – Riana 15:50, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
This is where I come into it. I got a few that did not turn out great because of the lighting but I am editing them and should be ready soon. As you can see to the photo to the left that is not of good quality and if anyone would like to edit it for me to save me having to do it at school it would save me a bit of trouble. An Apple a day keeps -The Doctor- Away..
