SMS Wörth was one of four German pre-dreadnought battleships of the Brandenburg class, the first ocean-going battleships built by the Imperial German Navy. Laid down at the Germaniawerft dockyard in Kiel, the ship was launched on 6 August 1892 and commissioned into the fleet in October 1893. Like her sister ships, Wörth carried six heavy guns rather than the standard four. She was named for the Battle of Wörth fought in 1870 during the Franco-Prussian War. Wörth participated in the normal peacetime routine of training cruises and exercises. She took part in the German naval expedition to China in 1900 to suppress the Boxer Rebellion but saw little direct action, since the siege of Peking had already been lifted by the time the fleet arrived. Obsolete by the start of World War I, the battleship served as a coastal defense ship for the first two years of the war, but saw no action. Wörth was reduced to a barracks ship by 1916, and was scrapped in the port of Danzig in 1919. (Full article...)

1777 – American Revolutionary War: The Battle of Oriskany, one of the bloodiest battles in the North American theater of the war, was fought about six miles (ten km) east of Fort Stanwix, New York.
1965 – U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act into law, outlawing literacy tests and other discriminatory voting practices that had been responsible for widespread disfranchisement of African Americans.
1997 – On approach to Antonio B. Won Pat International Airport in Guam, Korean Air Flight 801 crashed into a hill, killing 228 of the 254 people aboard.
2008 – Mauritanian President Sidi Mohamed Ould Cheikh Abdallahi (pictured) was ousted from power by a group of high-ranking generals that he had dismissed from office several hours earlier.
2011 – Following the killing of a man by the Metropolitan Police of London, thousands of mostly young males rioted in several London boroughs and in cities and towns across England.

Škocjan Caves

There are four World Heritage Sites in Slovenia, with five sites on a tentative list. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Sites are places of importance to cultural or natural heritage as described in the UNESCO World Heritage Convention, established in 1972. Slovenia, following the declaration of independence from Yugoslavia on 25 June 1991, ratified the convention on 5 November 1992. The first site in Slovenia to be added to the list of World Heritage Sites was the Škocjan Caves (pictured), inscribed at the 10th UNESCO session in 1986. In the 2010s, three more sites were inscribed, all of them transnational entries: pile dwellings at Ig, part of the Prehistoric pile dwellings around the Alps transnational site, in 2011, Idrija, as part of the transnational site Heritage of Mercury. Almadén and Idrija, in 2012, and two forest reserves, Krokar and Snežnik – Ždrocle Virgin Forests in 2017, as a part of the extension to the site of Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and the Ancient Beech Forests of Germany.
