Indonesia-related Topics Notice Board

Welcome to the Indonesia-related topics notice board. This Regional Notice Board was created to facilitate and coordinate efforts to improve the quality of Indonesia-related Wikipedia articles. If you're new here, please take the following steps to help this project along.
  • Get Listed: If you're an Indonesian national or a foreign expat living in Indonesia and have not done so already, please add your name to the list of Indonesian Wikipedians. For all those taking part in long term editing of Indonesia-related articles, please add your name to the Roster section.
  • Introduce Yourself: Use this board's Talk Page to briefly introduce yourself and to find out more about those working on this project. Please include your areas of expertise (regarding Indonesia, Wikipedia, and any other relevant interests), as well as your ideas on where to take this project. Don't forget to sign your posts!
  • Remember to Respect the Board: To keep this regional notice board tidy, it will be used for three things: to maintain a Roster of Indonesia-related article contributors; to keep a regularly updated To-Do list; and to keep permanent notes on editing Indonesia-related articles (e.g. Style Guides and templates) contributed by the Roster. For anything else, use the Talk Page!

Templates

edit

For more information on Templates, please read WP:TM

A number of Templates for Indonesia-related articles exist. These can be inserted to give a unified look and feel to pages, as well as to assist navigation. Please use this space to list them here, using a bullet followed by the double-curled bracket codes (wrapped with the "nowiki" HTML tag):

  • {{History of Indonesia}} - used to create a article series for articles on major eras and events in the history of Indonesia.
  • {{Politics of Indonesia}} - used for articles covering Indonesian elections, political parties, political offices, and summary ovewview pages on Politics of Indonesia.
  • {{Provinces of Indonesia}} - used for articles on individual provinces of Indonesia.

Stubs

edit

For more information on stubs and stub messages, please read WP:STUB

Stub messages are a subset of Templates, used to mark an article as a stub, an incomplete article that is short and in need of expansion. By adding a stub message the article is placed in a specialized Category. There are two stubs directly related to Indonesia:

  • {{Indonesia-stub}} - for general Indonesian stubs topics. Places articles in Category:Indonesia_stubs
  • {{Indonesia-geo-stub}} - for Indonesian stubs related to geographic features of Indonesia (cities, towns, bodies of water, volcanoes, etc). These are put into Category:Indonesia geography stubs.
  • {{Indonesia-bio-stub}} - for stubs related to Indonesian people

As stub messages have proliferated, stub messages must be proposed and approved before they are created. If you've proposed an Indonesia-related stub (or are thinking of doing so), please mention it in the Talk Page so that interested parties can comment on the proposal and/or guide it through approval. After it has been approved, add it to the "To-Do List" above, so that interested parties can expand these stubs.

Hi all,.. I just want to ask your help about distorsion data in Scouting article. It's written there that the United States ranked on the top, with 10Million+ members. But, if we see on the tabel, Indonesia should be on top with 8.9 Millions Scouts, while United States has only 6.9Millions Scouts. Can somebody help me to say something?

I'm a college student at Hunter College of CUNY, residing in The Bronx. My areas of interest are 20th Century Indonesian history and politics, especially U.S.-Indonesia relations during that time period. I am also good at editing for grammar/style. --Daniel June 29, 2005 00:24 (UTC)

I am a PhD student of Old-Javanese literature. I am writing a thesis which I plan to submit at the University of Leiden. My main areas of interest are literature and linguistics. But I am also interested in history and anthropology. I've seen that there are lots of inaccuracies and misunderstanding in these fields on Wikipedia, so I intend to help anyway I can. Meursault2004 29 June 2005 00:40 (UTC)

I have no academic interest in Indonesia but I did grow up there. I am good at adding a broader perspective and tidbits and relying on Daniel to clean my writing up ;-). Julius.kusuma 29 June 2005 13:10 (UTC)

I'm an undergraduate at Monash University at Melbourne, Australia. I could maybe add a little about things that happened in more recent years (I don't really know much about history of Indonesia :-)) and do cleaning-up too. Hayabusa future 29 June 2005 13:26 (UTC)

For now, I've no professional or familial ties to Indonesia, but I wrote an MA thesis about Indonesian political history a while back at an American university, and I've studied and travelled there. I especially like writing about specific places - cities, islands, rivers - but broader work is good too. I'm thrilled to see this starting up. CDC (talk) 30 June 2005 20:56 (UTC)

My wife is Indonesian and I studied Cultural Anthropology in Leiden, focusing on Indonesia (we should meet sometime Meursault!). My Indonesian is fairly good and I speak a little Minangkabau ;-). MartijnL 1 July 2005 08:35 (UTC)

I wrote the Kediri and Pasai articles and I'm preparing an article on the maritime trade route between the Indian Ocean and southern China. I've done a lot of copy-editing and some new material on Srivijaya and Singhasari. I haven't done any formal work on Indonesia since I was an undergraduate but South East Asia is a continuing interest of mine. Alan 3 July 2005 15:14 (UTC)

I'm no expert, but lived in Indonesia for four years, speak Indonesian and have an Indonesian wife. I'll try to add a bit here and there. Rhion 15:47, 6 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I lived in Yogya 95-96 with my family, (my wife had done her fieldwork on side of Gunung Merapi 10 years prior to that) its now ten years later and I am very interested in seeing entries for places in Java that do not read like ad hoc backpacker misinformation.User:SatuSuro 05:24, 13 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Both my parents were born in Nias but I was born and raised in Jakarta. Recently graduated (from Universitas Indonesia) and now looking for a job :p (preferably in advertising since it was my undergraduate major) (strike that, got a job. Strike that, I should prolly stop advertising my employment status here :p). Though I began by editing some (read: tiny snippets of) computer stuffs, the bulk of my contribution were made a year later to the 2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake article (along with starting Nias while I was at it). I have since slowed down my contributions, sometimes adding to Free Software or Free Culture-related articles. I haven't contributed much since about April, looking for a job and all (in addition to other procastination activities such as blogging and, umm, reading Wikipedia :p ), but I'll do what I can when I can. No promises, though :) --Lemi4 12:22, 8 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'm Australian, but now live in the UK. I was an exchange student to Ambon in 1988 for six months, and still have ties with my 'family' and some of the friends I made there. I studied Indonesian all through High School and University, but then the travel bug bit really hard, and I did the 'Aussie in London' thing and travelled around Europe. I'm pretty settled here now, but feel that Indonesia and Indonesian language are the things I really sacrificed in the move to Europe, where Indonesian is not the most useful of languages to speak! I'm really enjoying the opportunity of stretching my linguistic-legs again, so to speak, and have been translating any reasonable-sized article in Indonesian that I find into English. I'm currently working on Bumi Manusia and have ordered a copy of the English translation to help me out as I'm a bit stuck on some of the language. If anyone knows where I can copy a purchase of the original, please let me know. --Sepa 16:53, 17 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm British and have lived in Indonesia for 10 years, initially in Medan and now in Jakarta. I speak Indonesian and am interested in Indonesian post-independence history and politics, particularly the Guided Democracy and Old to New Order transition periods. I collect Indonesian books from the 1950's and 60's, and have a fairly extensive collection of original source material relating to this period. Davidelit 09:04, 2 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi all. I am an Indonesian living in the U.S as a professional. Had lived in Banten, Jakarta and Bandung before moved to the U.S. Despite my technical background, I am interested in Indonesian history, politics and culture. My knowledge about Indonesian history came primarily from word of mouth -family stories and/or discussions-, as well as from collection of books that my father/late grandfather used to own when I was a kid some 20 years ago. Look forward to further collaborating with ya'll as my time permits Wongjerang 02:08, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I am an American writer. However, I spent part of my childhood in Bandung and Tarakan because my parents did mission work there. While I don't know that much about Indonesia, I write for a living, so I've been doing some copy-editing on here. Indonesia is a subject of interest to me, so I thought I'd try helping with this site.

Nominees for improvement

edit

Indonesian politics

edit
  • Politics of Indonesia is badly in need of updating/improvements. I can probably search around the Library of Congress (in the U.S.) and CIA World Factbook. --Daniel June 29, 2005 00:24 (UTC)
      • (UPDATE!) The Indonesia-related stub has won passage. Thank you to Grutness for his guidance through the process. Now Indonesia related stubs (that are not Indonesia geographic stubs) can be placed into Category:Indonesia-related_stubs by inserting the text {{Indonesia-stub}}. I'm going to mark as many as I can find, but to repeat my last point, I think this will come in handy when we take up a WikiProject. At any rate, I'm updating the "To-Do List" and main page with this information.--Daniel July 7, 2005 18:05 (UTC)

Indonesian cities

edit
  • Articles about cities could also be expanded. Some, like Tangerang and Serang, only has one or two lines in them. Hayabusa future 29 June 2005 13:26 (UTC)
    • I can look at these and see if I can add anything. Unfortunately both cities have lost a lot of their character in the recent years, and are almost already swallowed whole by the urban expansion of Jakarta. Julius.kusuma 29 June 2005 14:25 (UTC)
      • A stub for Indonesia geography stubs has already been made. Check it out at Category:Indonesia_geography_stubs. I'll add it to the "To-Do List" if there's no objections. --Daniel July 1, 2005 19:45 (UTC)

Indonesian Regions and Areas

edit
  • Gunung Kidul is an administrative region, but also a cultural and an ecological area - for the sake of clarity there are a number of areas in Indonesia that partially link in with the admin/cultural/geographical boundaries. Do we simply roll the info into the one article each time?

Similar to the Javanese artice is language (and rightly so) but some potential links might be to the cultural or demographic frameworks as well? Interested if anyone might have comments on this.vcxlor 05:33, 13 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The article on Aceh has a history section that starts at 850 AD. That seems a little late. Can someone with some expretise talk about the pre-Islamic history of the region?

Mataram

edit
  • Mataram needs to be made a disambiguation page that points to separate articles on the Hindu-Buddhist kingdom of Mataram, the 15th century sultanate of Mataram, and the present-day town on Lombok. There also needs to be an article on the process of Indianisation in South East Asian history. A number of the articles on various Hindu-Buddhist kingdoms in Indonesia and elsewhere need to be reviewed for POV problems. Alan 3 July 2005 15:20 (UTC)
    • I agree. But I think it's better to name the so called Hindu-Buddhist Mataram, Mataram I or Old Mataram and the so called Muslim Mataram, New Mataram or Mataram II. Besides the fact that it does more justice to reality, it is also more politically correct. Meursault2004 3 July 2005 16:53 (UTC)
    • Done. Please see Mataram Meursault2004 3 July 2005 17:19 (UTC)
      • I'm afraid I disagree quite strongly. Names such as New Mataram or Mataram II have never been used either by the people of the area or in the historiography. I think it's quite important not to confuse an already confusing onomastics further by inventing new names. An exact analogy is the situation in the Balkans and Africa where some present-day states have nothing (except their names) in common with their medieval predecessors. I don't think anyone speaks about New Mali or New Macedonia. The problem with a neologism such as Mataram II is that it sounds like a stratigraphic designation from a ceramic sequence because those traditionally use Roman numerals. The Indonesian Wikipedia calls its equivalent articles 'Kesultanan Mataram' and 'Kerajaan Mataram'. Alan 3 July 2005 23:40 (UTC)
    • Yeah, the problem is, only Sultan Agung (Prabu Anyakrakusuma) was one of the few king of the New Mataram who bore Sultan as a title. Only with prince Mangkubumi later became Sultan as a title in use again (as Sultan Hamengkubuwana I), but only in Yogyakarta. Of course I am willing to make concession. An aside: many people in the West tend to see matter purely in black and white and I regret that. If you want to call them the Kingdom of Mataram and Sultanate of Mataram or something similar, I don't object, instead of I or II. But please pay attention to the facts I mentioned above. By the way, previously the Old Mataram was called Mataram-Hindu and the New Mataram was Mataram-Islam or something like that in the Indonesian Wikipedia and I objected the use of this nomenclature. Thanks. Meursault2004 4 July 2005 07:51 (UTC)

Jawa Dwipa

edit

Jawa Dwipa needs some expansion. --Dangerous-Boy 06:57, 16 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hindu topics

edit

Almost all articles dealing with Hinduism in Southeast Asia need attention for POV and factual content issues. Agama Hindu Dharma and linked articles for example describe a large Hindu resurgence in Indonesia which is not reported by any independent source and seem to regard the alleged resurgence as validation of medieval Hindu prophecies. I'll defer to someone with better Indonesian as to whether Hinduism is called Agama Hindu or Agama Hindu Dharma in Bahasa. I'm inclined to mark these articles NPOV but thought it should be discussed here first. Alan 14:46, 21 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

You have made a good point. An example is the Osing article which has really bad English and is just factually incorrect in most of assersions. The same can be said for the article on the Tenggerese. There needs to be some revision in most of the ethnic pages because of their POV positions on religion. Yamauchi 20:55, 16 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Tourism in Indonesia

edit

Tourism is a key part of the Indonesian economy, and something of great interest to foreigners. Unfortunely the current article Tourism in Indonesia contains no content :-( . Culture of Indonesia

edit

The current article Culture of Indonesia needs alot of attention to expand its scope to cover other aspects of Indonesian culture, and also work to broaden the focus beyond Bali & Java. For inspiration, see the culture pages of other countries like Culture of India and Culture of the Philippines. The category Category:Indonesian culture contains some additional information and articles available for reference. --Caniago 01:59, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Islamic Defenders Front

edit

The article on the Islamic Defender Front (more popularly known in Indonesia as Front Pembela Islam) has a much richer . For example, the external links in the current English version was lifted from the Indonesian version. And IMHO the id version is more NPOV. The current English version is listed as an Islam stub. I was about to add an Indonesian stub marker on it when I remembered you guys :p SO... how 'bout it, can I put the stub mark on? I promise to begin working on translating the sctuff Real Soon Now™ :p --Lemi4 15:43, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've added the indo-stub. --Lemi4 10:52, 7 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

template for malay empires

edit

Could you guy please create a template for the indonesian empires of the past?

here's an example: Template:Middle kingdoms of India

Can you guys also put up some maps of the empires influence too?--Dangerous-Boy

I am working on a template, Template:History of Indonesia that includes the pre-colonial period, which could overlap this. I think creating a different template on the Malay civilizations/empires would be useful and complement the History of Indonesia template. One hitch, though, could be that a number of these civilizations/empires covered Malaysia and other Southeast Asian nations as well.
If you could run this by Wikipedia:Malaysia-related topics notice board, maybe we can get a good discussion going!
P.S.: I'm sorry if removing the actual template/table from this page seemed rude, but it was rather large so I reduced it to just a Wiki-link. --Daniel 20:39, 10 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I mostly interested in the Hindu ones. Maybe you guys should combine this with the malaysians. Dangerous-Boy 00:15, 13 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Your template for history looks good. Do you empires one soon! --Dangerous-Boy 22:11, 13 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

History of Indonesia Template

edit

At present, I believe that there is a dire need to create a series of History of Indonesia pages. These would be based on time periods in Indonesian history (e.g. Pre-colonial, Colonial, Post-Independence, Confrontation, etc.). This would let the article History of Indonesia be closer to a general summary-style page, and allow those who wish for greater depth to examine the articles on historical eras. That is, those who wish to examine Indonesia under Sukarno could look at a Post-Independence Era page, without being burdened by having to navigate stuff on the Majapahit.

To start off, I've created a template, that can be examined at Template:History of Indonesia. This template, applied to Indonesian history pages, would allow easier navigation for readers, as well as a greater unity for pages on historical events.

I'm asking for anyone with a very good knowledge and who's interested to please contact me so that this is a group effort. In particular, my weakness (being in a country that tends to tell the buleh side of things) is in the pre-colonial history of the archipelago. Especially helpful would be translations from Indonesian Wikipedia articles.

I am posting this message on applicable Talk pages, but I ask for comments to be directed to Wikipedia_talk:Indonesia-related_topics_notice_board. --Daniel 20:22, 10 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

This is a featured article on the Indonesian Wiki. Alas I found little on him in English. What I have is very stubbish and I'd appreciate any help that can be done. The article does link to the Indonesian version already so that might help.--T. Anthony 07:45, 18 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'll take a stab at translating some portions of the Indonesian-language article. Julius.kusuma 15:29, 21 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I have edited some and I have also added some pictures. Meursault2004 19:27, 12 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

These two pages have significant overlap, and I think it's better to merge them. Frankly, I don't see a point in having the second page being separate at all, since it covered more about the history of the Chinese Indonesians instead of focusing only on the "view of nationhood" issue. I am also concerned that it may be used as an outlet for certain political agenda. Otherwise, why have the page be separate from Indonesian Chinese? Thoughts? Julius.kusuma 15:28, 21 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I've tagged both articles for merger, and will start the process soon. Please help out in this effort! Thanks in advance. Julius.kusuma 15:52, 26 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Re Glenmore (disambiguation). I can't find out much about how Glenmore, East Java came to have its name (or whether it's Scottish or Irish). But there are apparently kampungs called Glen Falloch and Glen Nevis nearby[1] --Singkong2005 10:25, 9 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

According to Richard Mann in his book titled The British in Indonesia, when Catholic Scots sought refuge in Holland they were sent to the East Indies instead. Does anybody know more about the history of the Scottish villages in Java? --Akarwangi 15:42, 19 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

From my research, Ewan Cameron 1738 to 1797 (died in Glen Nevis, Java) son of Alexander Cameron 1712 to 1774 and member of the Clan Cameron line of Clan Chiefs emigrated to East Java founding the plantations.

Origin of "Indonesia"

edit

From Indonesian Indian:

The name Indonesia itself comes from the Latin Indus "India" and Greek nêsos "island" which literally means the ‘Indian archipelago’.

I thought Indo was Greek as well.[2].

My friend standing here (Davidbofinger) vaguely recalls that India, Sind and Indus all might come from the same root, (though Indo might still have come to "Indonesia" via Greek or Latin). He says: The Arabic for India is Hind, it's easy to imagine the Arabs getting their word for India from Greek (via Hellenistic states) or from India directly, or from Persians; but it's hard to imagine them getting it from an independent Latin invention. http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=India says Sanskrit to Persian to Greek to Latin to English. www.indonesia.sk/profile/binfo.htm says both halves are Greek. --Singkong2005 10:29, 9 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Traditional forms of decision-making

edit

I was looking at the article on Consensus, and thought - should there be something about Indonesian traditional decision-making here? The idea that traditionally decisions were made through discussion and consensus is one that I think Sukarno drew from, and one which I came across while reading about Indonesia and living there.

(I should add that I'm not necessarily agreeing with this golden view of the past. I strongly suspect that 1) certain people, especially women, would have been excluded, and 2) less influential people in a community would have afraid to do anything other than support the wishes of the more influential people. Look at what Sukarno ended up doing, in his "Guided democracy".)

Articles that might be relevant to this include:

I'm not strong on this subject, so I'll just leave this as a suggestion. --Singkong2005 06:47, 4 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Singkong, I think you have a very valid point here, and one that really fits in with the work of the systemic bias group as well. Like you, though, I don't have the knowledge to contribute. Once I finish translating Kartini, I might read what the id wikipedia has to say on Mufakat and take it from there.--Sepa 21:36, 4 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I recently translated the above Indonesian article into English. I really think that with a bit of work on it, it would make a great English featured article, especially if we collaborated with other groups such as the countering systemic bias, and the Netherlands regional board.

To summarise, Kartini wrote letters in Dutch to friends (whom she never met) which profoundly changed the way the Dutch establishment viewed their Dutch East Indian possessions and its people. She was a women with very strong opinions on the way women were treated in her culture, on the injustices of colonialism, on the hypocrises of religion. Ironically, she was also uniquely priviledged - she was allowed to attend school until the age of 12, she had a sympathetic father who allowed her to write to her friends in the Netherlands, and later a sympathetic husband who allowed her to set up a school to educate Indonesian women. She died in childbirth at the age of 25.

Would there be any interest in collaborating on this article to try and bring it up to FA status? There are so many thought-provoking strands that could come out of it that I think it is a worthy project. --Sepa 20:36, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Indonesian Terms and Abbreviations

edit

There are several inconsistencies among the various indonesian articles with regard to the various acronyms. I feel there is a need for consistency as life will get confusing otherwise. Can I suggest that we adopt the versions used by the Jakarta Post, Indonesia's English language newspaper, available at [3]. Incidentally the English version of the weekly news magazine Tempo uses the same list. On the same lines, both of these publications use the spellings 'Suharto' (rather then 'Soeharto') and 'Sukarno' (rather than 'Soekarno').

If anybody has any alternative suggestions, I'd have no problem with that - the important thing is consistency. Davidelit 09:16, 2 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that consistency is important, particularly with Acronyms and Abbreviations as they have no inherent meaning in themselves. With regards to the spelling of Suharto, Sukarno etc, I think in general articles it's a good idea to use the Su..form, but in literature related articles, I think I would prefer to see the form that is used in the piece of literature.
Actually, I have created a [List of Indonesian acronyms and abbreviations], which has the acronym, the Indonesian/Dutch name, the English translation, and a short explanation if I still feel it's required. Please feel free to add new acronyms when you come across them. I've added the Jakarta Post article you mentioned as an external link. --Sepa 12:24, 25 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oops! Help. Nahdatul Ulama

edit

Sorry, I've got into a pickle. Spotting a red link, I created a stub yesterday called Nadhatul Ulama as a place marker until I had time to add more detail. Then I realized it was spellt differently on another page, so created another page called Nadhalatul Ulama. Tragically I then realised that a page called Nahdatul Ulama, also a stub but rather better than my effort, already existed and that Nahdlatul Ulama automatically linked to it anyway (at least two spellings exist, but I invented a new one as well).

Following the rule that if you're in a hole, stop digging, I turned off my computer and went to bed before I wrecked the Indonesian history and politics pages in their entirety. Could somebody help by deleting Nadhalatul Ulama and Nadhatul Ulama, but not Nahdatul Ulama? Sorry. Davidelit

Help with translations

edit

I'm currently working on a script intended to create short articles on political parties on a variety of wikipedias simultaneously. However, in order for the technique to work I need help with translations to various languages. If you know any of the languages listed at User:Soman/Lang-Help , then please help by filling in the blanks. For example I need help with Indonesian. Thanks, --Soman 12:14, 30 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

As fellow Indonesians, please help me to create this article since this is one of the most important things in Indonesia. The sources are available on LAPAN's website and try to google some more things. Thanks! This is going to be a long article if we try. Imoeng 10:51, 2 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think we should separate Hindu Revival in Indonesia and Agama Hindu Dharma. Agama Hindu Dharma should concetrate on the philosphical concepts on Balinese Hinduism and Hindu Revival in Indonesia should be renamed to Hinduism in Indonesia and concentrate on the history of hinduism in indonesia and its current influence and position.--D-Boy 04:33, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Indonesia Portal

edit

A new portal has been created (by me! :P) Please take a look at it. Portal:Indonesia Cheers -- Imoeng 11:58, 10 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bagus sekali! One point I noticed when looking at the portal was that the article on Music of Indonesia talks of 13,000 islands while the main Indonesia article talks of 18,000. Is there an official figure? Rhion 13:48, 10 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Terima kasih! Yeah I've put the portal to every main pages. And about the islands, its 18,000 islands, I've checked with the source. Cheers mate -- Imoeng 18:52, 10 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oh btw, just type WP:PID for the shortcut to the portal. Take care everyone -- Imoeng 19:29, 10 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject Indonesia

edit

I strongly belief that we need an Indonesian WikiProject. It really saddens me that we don't have even one featured article (or maybe I didnt see it). Yeah so, anyone interested in it? Come on guys, its a country where you were born or you've lived in. Lets make it better :) Please respond, whether yes or no. Cheers -- Imoeng 01:20, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The new Indonesian WikiProject has been created. WP:INA or WP:INDONESIA. Please make yourself available :) Cheers -- Imoeng 03:38, 12 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The title of this article is POV, and the contents have been merged to Chinese Indonesian. Hence I requested deletion. Please add your vote here. Julius.kusuma 19:53, 6 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Regencies, Cities, and Provinces Name

edit

In Indonesia, there are many subnational entities which have the same name. I propose to stardardize Indonesian regencies/cities/provinces articles name as follows:

The similar conventions are also used for subnational entities name in Poland (XXX_County, YYY_Voivodship), Thailand (YYY_Province, Amphoe_XXX), and Italy (Province_of_YYY). wic2020talk bicara 07:06, 26 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Here is the list. wic2020talk bicara 07:37, 27 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Wait2, is regency like, kabupaten? So then why those are in the same place as cities? I need to go to bed now, will respond tomorrow. Sorry -- Imoeng 12:59, 27 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, Regency=Kabupaten. Regencies and cities are equal in govt administration. Cities and regencies are different entities; they have different area/boundaries; they're just share the same name. wic2020talk bicara 14:30, 5 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose Have to admit that concerned about the proposal, since people generally refer to the city or province names without any additional wording (eg. Padang, Jakarta, etc). If there is any ambiguity then I prefer the existing postfix convention (eg. XXX_Regency, XXX (city), etc) to that the items are listed in natural alphabetical order. (Caniago)
Redirecting will solve that problem. About the other convention, it worth considering. But, if you use Regency at the beginning, the list will be also sorted alphabetically, by looking at the second word. Cheers -- Imoeng 12:58, 27 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, it's just easier to read and looks neater without the additional wording. I prefer using additonal wording only where it is necessary to disambiguate something. (Caniago 13:06, 27 September 2006 (UTC))[reply]

I just saw the message and I have to study it first. Indeed it has been done with Poland and perhaps Italy. I need some more time :-) Meursault2004 19:00, 29 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

License tags for Indonesia images

edit

I have made three license tags in Commons to allow images from Indonesia that are not copyrighted (in public domain), according to the Copyright Law No. 19, 2002. They are listed here: commons:Copyright_tags#Indonesia. Please feel free to use it and leave me a message here or at commons, if you think something is not appropriate. Cheers. — Indon (reply) — 10:29, 10 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Does indonesian law apply to wikipedia? Wikimedia foundation is in the US. Of course PD-IDGov tag is valid(because Indonesian government can release its own works to public domain), but what about the two others? But i don't know law very much. Peace. --Nielswik(talk) 08:08, 30 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
As far as I know, the license tag applies for where the image was published. The other two are the law for old images. Copyright image duration varies between countries. For example, images taken by a Dutch photographer, although it was taken in Indonesia, follows the Netherland's rule, i.e. having duration of 70 years after the death of the photographer. Take a look at this image Image:Gedung.Merdeka.jpg which somebody requested for a deletion because of the Dutch law. For Indonesia, the law states that the duration of images is 50 years after the death of the author. Thus, although WP is in the US, copyright for images depends on each country where the images were published by the author. Hope that helps. — Indon (reply) — 08:51, 30 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed that "List of Hospitals in Indonesia" was deleted recently. Why this page is deleted? Is it possible to recover and improve this page with address, phone number, number of beds, facility etc? Is there any list of deleted wikipedia pages related to Indonesia? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_hospitals_in_Asia —Preceding unsigned comment added by 210.210.145.7 (talkcontribs)

I read that Wikipedia does not need any information about Indonesian hospital. Why this page still exist?

Hello! A number of people are working on the page. However, due to the composition of the participants, the page is starting to be Malaysia and Singapore-centric. It would be great if Wikipedians from Indonesia could expand the section on Indonesia, thus making the article more balanced. Thanks! __earth (Talk) 04:20, 21 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Krakatoa eruption of CE 535

edit

November 2, 2006 -- In the entry on Krakatoa, I find this text...

416 AD event

The Javanese Book of Kings (Pustaka Raja) records that in the
year 338 Saka (416 AD) "A thundering sound was heard from the
mountain Batuwara ... a similar noise from Kapi ... The whole
world was greatly shaken and violent thundering, accompanied
by heavy rain and storms took place, but not only did not this
heavy rain extinguish the eruption of the fire of the mountain
Kapi, but augmented the fire; the noise was fearful, at last
the mountain Kapi with a tremendous roar burst into pieces and
sank into the deepest of the earth. The water of the sea rose
and inundated the land, the country to the east of the mountain
 Batuwara, to the mountain Raja Basa, was inundated by the sea;
the inhabitants of the northern part of the Sunda country to the
mountain Raja Basa were drowned and swept away with all property[3]
... The water subsided but the land on which Kapi stood became sea,
and Java and Sumatra were divided into two parts." There is no
geological evidence of a Krakatoa eruption of this size around
that time; it may describe loss of land that previously joined
Java to Sumatra across what is now the narrow east end of the Sunda
Strait; or it may be a mistaken date, referring to an eruption
in 535 AD, also referred to in the Javanese Book of Kings, and
for which there is geological and some corroborating historical evidence.

In the Pararaton (Javanese Book of Kings) entry, this text begins the article...

The Pararaton, also known as the Book of Kings, is a manuscript
in the Kawi language. The comparatively short text of 32 folio-size
pages (1126 lines) contains the history of the kings of Singhasari
  and Majapahit in eastern Java.
It is also called "Pustaka Raja", which is Sanskrit for "book king",
or likelier "book of kings" as two Sanskrit words put together
by the rules of Indonesian grammar.
Since the oldest colophon in the manuscripts contains the date
1522 Saka (A.D.1600), the final part of the text must have been
  written between A.D. 1481 and 1600,
presumably closer to the first date than to the second date.

I'm trying to find out the logic behind the line in the Pararaton article that leads to the 119-year difference between 1481 AD and 1600 AD. Is that a specific period of uncertainty in the dates to which the Pararaton refers, or what? I ask because I noticed that the period from 416 AD (Pararaton claims Krakatoa erupted violently) and 535 AD (when other evidence says it occurred) is also 119 years, and I consider the appearance in two places of the same difference in time to be exceptional.

Questions from User:Nielswik

edit

Hi guys. First, i think this noticebord has to archive old discussions. Second, how is the naming convention for Indonesian history related article? Sometime there is a different between Indonesian name and European name. Examples

How to handle this? Thanks. Peace. --Nielswik(talk) 17:14, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

On English wikipedia, you need to take their generally accepted English terms - but there is no reason why their other names (Indonesian) cannot also be mentioned in the lead. We need to be careful not trying to re-write history or changing one POV term into another POV term. Pointless. Let the articles speak for themselves. Page moves over POV issues are pointless. --Merbabu 23:27, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I recently tagged this article to be merged into Paluweh, I would appreciate opinions from regular Indonesian editors. Gnangarra 06:53, 29 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have already created the whole list for Indonesia: List of volcanoes in Indonesia. Perhaps List of volcanoes in Paluweh should be redirected to the complete list, as I've done with other list of volcanoes in some part of Indonesia. — Indon (reply) — 08:39, 29 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with Indon - redirect to List of volcanoes in Indonesia - on the condition that all information in the Paluweh page is in the Indonesia page. --Merbabu 08:54, 29 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nielswik has suggested moving this page to Indonesian Civil War. What do people think? A good idea? Or do they have another suggestion? Please comment on the article's talk page.--Merbabu 09:00, 29 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Floods in Malaysia, Singapore and Sumatra

edit

Dear Indonesian Wikipedians,

In the coming weeks, several editors from WikiProject Meteorology and Singapore, with some from Malaysia will be collaborating on a major article pertaining to the current December 2006 floods on the Malay Peninsula, including Singapore, and Sumatra. There are several issues which we must clear up before the creation of this article, including fixing the appropriate nomenclature and scope for the article. Please consider helping out in this collaboration. A sandbox and talkpage have been created. On a separate note, here's wishing all of you a merry Christmas. - SpLoT (*C*+u+g) 05:47, 24 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
