What needs to be done?

edit

For years, notable WWE personnel Nick Khan did not have any article. I created it first and it was moved to Draft:Nick Khan. I worked independently on it and hours later, someone creates Nick Khan again. What needs to be done? BinaryBrainBug (talk) 01:09, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, BinaryBrainBug! I moved the Nick Khan article you created to the draft space. At the time it was moved, it contained two short sentences and one citation. As such, it was not ready to be in Wikipedia's main space yet because the article didn't indicate whether Khan is notable according to Wikipedia's guidelines. The draft space provides editors somewhere to work on their article and potentially receive feedback from other editors before having it published for the world to see. I hope that helps! :) Significa liberdade (she/her) (talk) 02:51, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Looking back, some of the content, especially the sources (like archive links) seems to be copied from my work. Not trying for dispute but tagfing the reviewer Significa liberdade and creater Mechanical Elephant to have their say. BinaryBrainBug (talk) 01:21, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

BinaryBrainBug, if it is clear that your original work was copied from the draft to the new article, then that is a problem. But sources are not your original work. Any editor is free to write a draft at any time. And any autoconfirmed editor is free to write a new article at any time, if the topic is notable. It is not a race and we are not giving out brownie points for "first to write a certain article". The encyclopedia comes first. Cullen328 (talk) 02:25, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
BinaryBrainBug, I looked at your article at the time it was created. It consisted of two very brief sentences and a single reference. The other version consisted of two dozen sentences and sixteen references. The comparison is striking. Cullen328 (talk) 02:39, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Cullen328, I am not here to take credit. However, the fact that I expanded and submitted the draft with reliable sources and then a another user created the article, knowing about the draft in queue is concerning, makes the whole system of draft review pointless.
About the copying, it's not about original work, but comparing the sources cited and archived, it seems that the user was at least aware of my draft. Again, I am not claiming ownership, I have problem with the review system and the user creating the article despite draft already existing without communicating with me doesn't seem respectful or good faith. BinaryBrainBug (talk) 08:26, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I have now moved the draft to Nicholas Khan as redirect to retain page history. What needs to be done with Draft:Nick Khan? BinaryBrainBug (talk) 09:58, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

What do I need to change to remove the vertical lines on the otherwise blank line (the one with the White background)? BlueWren0123 (talk) 03:05, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

hi @BlueWren0123! the blank cell does not have vertical lines to me as you have used colspan on them. are you referring to something else? 💜  melecie  talk - 03:20, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No, for me it has the 2 vertical lines at the surround of the table. I have no lines within the table for that row.
Thinker78 - I looked at the 2 table option, but it seems that I would then need to change the horizontal sizes if I make any changes. I had hoped keeping to one table would avoid that BlueWren0123 (talk) 03:42, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@BlueWren0123: Tables are for presenting tabulated data. See MOS:TABLES. It seems you are trying to use tables for a purpose (e.g. formatting) other than that permitted. If you give a more detailed idea of what you are trying to achieve, then there may be other solutions to recommend. Bazza (talk) 10:39, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Bazza 7:I am intending to use the tables for presenting tabulated data but to ask the question I presented just sufficient to ask the question. I was being concise.
I have information which will be best understood when presented in rows and columns and so a table is the most appropriate presentation style.
If the implementation of Tables is not going to work as I would like, then I will certainly consider other possibilities. Rather than create a large table and then find that it will not present the information clearly, I have asked for help. I try to consider the presentation of the data together with the gathering of the data. To use other than a Table for the data that I am gathering is not a 'best fit'.
Your recent arrangement of information into a table on Miner's inch in my opinion is an improvement. Your decision to use the flexibility of the Table arrangement seems well considered. Surely you are using formatting to display the data.
Why then do you tell me that using a Table for formatting is a purpose other than that permitted.
Could you not have tried to answer my question instead? BlueWren0123 (talk) 13:03, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@BlueWren0123: By "formatting" I meant formatting of page layouts. Some editors use tables to make columns of text. Sorry if I wasn't clear.
Your requirement is unusual: why do you need your table to have an empty row (which you referred to as a blank line)? It is that which lead me to ask you for clarification about what you are attempting to achieve. Bazza (talk) 13:09, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
In the 'About all of the above' I intend to put clarification that applies to many of the cells above. To repeat that within the cells would be unnecessary clutter. I already have a presentation method for that that is within the MOS. BlueWren0123 (talk) 13:15, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@BlueWren0123: If the explanation is not tabulated data, then it should not be in the table. You can follow the table with normal text, or a list of explanations, or use notes to help with your explanations, or a combination of all of those. An example of using notes can be seen at District line § Four Lines Modernisation (4LM). Bazza (talk) 13:34, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

That does not answer the question of why you want a blank line. Why not simply:

This is no longer a productive exchange for me. Please deal with the content of my question. I probably will not respond further.BlueWren0123 (talk) 13:44, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@BlueWren0123: I'm assuming that you are referring to User:BlueWren0123/Basic? If you are not, then ignore the rest of this comment; if you are, it would have been helpful to say so from the start.
To answer your specific question: you can remove the two side borders of the blank row's single cell by adding style="border: none;" to its properties.
Your table, though, has two errors in it:
  1. The completely blank row consisting of a single cell has no data in it. Its sole purpose is to act separate the rows above and below it, meaning it's being used for formatting the display of the table. It should not be present in the table.
  2. It is not clear what the bottom row is as it is structurally covered by all three column headers. Because of this, it does not meet WP:ACCESSIBILITY. Its contents ought to be outside the table.
Should you add a table of that design to an article your edit could be reverted for the reasons I have attempted to give you above. Bazza (talk) 14:15, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Make a second table. Regards, Thinker78 (talk) 03:38, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Removed edits

edit

I've just had a couple of edits removed and, as a newbie, find this process really off-putting. That someone can just nuke text and not explain why is really not a good experience. Is there somewhere / way that I can ask whoever it was? Thx. SecretSquirrel9 (talk) 13:42, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The place to ask is either User talk:Seasider53 or Talk:Jimmy Carr. Martin of Sheffield (talk) 14:05, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thx SecretSquirrel9 (talk) 15:04, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@SecretSquirrel9: I suggest reviewing the information in WP:BOLD, revert, discuss cycle, as this is a normal process of editing Wikipedia.
@Seasider53: When reverting good faith edits in the future, please describe why you're doing so in the edit summary. GoingBatty (talk) 15:26, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thx. I think I'll only do 1 edit a day in future. I'd added 3 lines, on diff aspects of Standup and all were removed - so I'm clueless as to whether it was 1 or all that @Seasides53 objected to.
I did think for a second it was an IT issue as I'd had an "exceeded rate limit" message and then found i was logged out (even though I'd checked to remain in for 1 year). I ended up logging back in 3 times (?) so something wasn't happy on the site (unless I happened to hit the page the second that it was being "reverted"). I have VPN software but it was disconnected at the time as I know many sites don't like it.
I've had enough today!!!! :o))) SecretSquirrel9 (talk) 16:18, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Template and Article alerts for WikiProject

edit

I'm new to templates and lua scripting, and just made a template for Wikipedia:WikiProject Electronic literature. I would appreciate it if someone could check that I did this correctly - and I would love advice on how to connect this to the Article Alerts section on the project webpage so we can see recently updated pages covered by the project. We only need a very basic template and so on to start with as we don't have any system for assessment yet. Thanks! Lijil (talk) 14:46, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

United Hotels of America

edit

This article is very well done and matches my memory of details from my father who was the last Treaserer of the company. I would like to contact the author on a different aspect of the chain. How do I do this? Kody's Grandma (talk) 15:01, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Kody's Grandma: Hi there! You may start a conversation on the article's talk page to talk with those editors interested in the article. If you go to the article and click on "View history", you'll see all the users who edited the article. GoingBatty (talk) 15:21, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Kody's Grandma: I assume you mean United Hotels Company of America. There are many contributors. The main author can be contacted directly at User talk:DACC23. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:34, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Supercentenarians

edit

I use Fandom to track supercentenarians. Fandom referred me to Wikipedia as the source. My question: The list of names for 2024 does not contain a (chronological number) as it has in past years. For example, compare https://gerontology.fandom.com/wiki/List_of_supercentenarians_who_died_in_2023 and https://gerontology.fandom.com/wiki/List_of_supercentenarians_who_died_in_2024

Having the names by number would be very helpful.

Thanks Steve Emperor43 (talk) 15:33, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This page is for asking questions about editing Wikipedia. We cannot help you with Fandom or any other website. You will need to contact whatever help forum you can find there or fix the issue yourself. I don't understand what you mean by Having the names by number anyway. Wikipedia has a List of notable supercentenarians, not all supercentenarians. Shantavira|feed me 16:17, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Emperor43: I'm also unsure which numbers you refer to. I suspect you mean superscript numbers in square brackets like [2] after the names in wikia:gerontology:List of supercentenarians who died in 2023#List. They are not intended to number the rows. They are numbered references where [2] means the second numbered reference on the whole page and so on. A table row might have 0, 1 or more references. If you click the number then you jump to the reference text at the end. Nobody has added references to wikia:gerontology:List of supercentenarians who died in 2024 so there are no such numbers there. Wikipedia is not affiliated with Fandom and I doubt you can get somebody here to add references. PrimeHunter (talk) 18:30, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How can I publish a translation from my contributions?

edit

Hi! I have translated an article and it's now in my contributions section, but I cannot find out how I can submit it and publish it. Thank you, Machi MavrikiM (talk) 15:42, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, MavrikiM. In general, the answer is that you can move the draft to main article space. But in your case this does not apply, for two reasons:
1. Your account on English Wikipedia is too newhas not made enough edits for you to have that function available
2. Judging by your user name, you have a conflict of interest, so you should not move the article to mainspace yourself, but should submit it for review. I have added a header to User:MavrikiM/Kostas Mavrikis to allow you to do so when you are confident that it meets English Wikipedia's requirements for referencing and notability (which may be stricter than Greek Wikipedia's) ColinFine (talk) 16:50, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You also need to sort out the citations. Most of them use the parameter "ημερομηνία=" which is unknown in the English language Wikipedia. Martin of Sheffield (talk) 17:00, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The main image of Electronic literature is a photo of a floppy disk with a label on it - the disk contains a classic work of electronic literature, a hypertext fiction by Shelley Jackson. The article is currently undergoing a GA review and the reviewer raised the question of whether the label might be copyrighted, regardless of the photographers of the diskette having specified that it is CC-by-SA. Are there any copyright specialists who know whether that would be the case? If a diskette label is copyrightable, could the author or the publisher in question give permission to use it, or do we need to find another image? Lijil (talk) 17:01, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Seems to me that the Eastgate logo clearly pushes it into the realm of a copyrighted item, like the dustjacket of a book. --Orange Mike | Talk 19:10, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I represent someone who wants to change their profile and edit it how she would like. Is that possible?

edit

I represent someone who wants to change their profile information/photo and edit her bio how she would like. Is that possible? Zachliss123 (talk) 18:07, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If this relates to Nathalie Kelley, I suggest you start by reading Wikipedia:Conflict of interest, as you have been told repeatedly. And no, it isn't possible to edit a Wikipedia article to reflect how the subject 'would like'. This is an encyclopaedia, not social media. AndyTheGrump (talk) 18:16, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Zachliss123 If you are compensated for your representation, the Terms of Use require that to be disclosed, see WP:PAID. 331dot (talk) 18:21, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If your client wants to put up a profile someplace that she controls, she can do so. But it sure as hell won't be in Wikipedia. --Orange Mike | Talk 19:04, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Zachliss123, you have been indefinitely blocked from directly editing Nathalie Kelley since October 12, 2023. You are at high risk of being blocked from all of Wikipedia because you have failed to comply with the Paid contributions disclosure, which is mandatory and non-negotiable. Do so in your very next edit. At that point, you can make neutrally written, well-referenced, formal edit requests at Talk: Nathalie Kelley. Please read Wikipedia:Ownership of content and have your client read it too. Cullen328 (talk) 19:28, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How do I create an article in the biography format? What do I do? Lesliharris (talk) 22:04, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Lesliharris, first make plenty of edits, based on reliable sources, that improve some of the many articles that already exist. When you've become adept at this, read and digest Help:Your first article. (Oh, I'm assuming that the bio is not for your boss or similar. If it is, please choose some "outlet" other than Wikipedia.) -- Hoary (talk) 23:04, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

"Commons category" or "Commons category-inline"?

edit

Is it better to use the template "Commons category" or "Commons category-inline"? For example, on the Uruguayan Civil War page. JackkBrown (talk) 22:05, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

JackkBrown I checked with "what links here" and template:Commons category is used without a bullet as in Achilles, while template:Commons category-inline is used with a bullet as in Altruism. TSventon (talk) 22:27, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@JackkBrown: The template instrucions at template:Commons category#Location says "Do not place this template in a section all by itself without floating left." ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 23:19, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like you have changed the original question you asked but I think it should be placed in a links section, not references. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 23:27, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@WikiOriginal-9: there are no external links on the Uruguayan Civil War page, so I removed the "External links" text and, consequently, also the "Commons category" template. JackkBrown (talk) 23:32, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The Commons cat is an external link since it's going to a different website. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 23:57, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@WikiOriginal-9: yes, I know this, but it makes no sense to create a paragraph ("External links") just for the "Commons category" template. JackkBrown (talk) 00:24, 26 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think WP:MOSSIS is what we're looking for. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 00:29, 26 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
