Book sourcing

edit

I have several large books from Dark Horse on The Legend of Zelda I'd like to use as sources for an article. The problem is, there are several authors, and the translator has some credit for some reason. How do I format this? Blitzfan51 speak to the manager 01:00, 14 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Blitzfan51: Create a sandbox at e.g. User:Blitzfan51/cite book sandbox. In that sandbox, experiment with {{Cite book}}, after reading its documentation. If you are not happy with your result, come back here and we can try to help. Worst case: we can help you extend your "cite book" ref with non-templated additional text. -Arch dude (talk) 02:35, 14 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Blitzfan51. If you read the documentation of Template:Cite book, you will see that adding fields to the template for multiple authors and translators can be done quite easily. Another issue is whether books published by this comic book publisher are reliable sources for a video game franchise. Since my active knowledge of comic books and video games ended decades ago, I have no opinion on reliability but advise a cautious assessment. Cullen328 (talk) 02:38, 14 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Is my user page in violation of WP:FAKEARTICLE?

edit

I just found out that you can't style something in userspace as a mainspace article, but for just over a week I've had the first line of my user page styled as if it were the opening sentence to an article, then after that it continues in a more typical style of writing for a user page. Should I edit my user page to remove this? Or does it not break the rules. Theooolone (talk) 12:54, 14 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Relax, it looks fine to me. Slightly humerus and gives readers an idea of what you do, which is ideal. All IMO of course! Martin of Sheffield (talk) 12:58, 14 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Humerus? I have a bone to pick with that claim. Clarityfiend (talk) 17:31, 14 January 2024 (UTC) [reply]
Grr, spoil chuckers! Try humorous! :-) Martin of Sheffield (talk) 17:42, 14 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see any problem. 331dot (talk) 13:21, 14 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Your fine. The purpose behind the policy is to stop people putting a Wikipedia page in userspace and treating it as if it were an actual article. (Not that you couldn't do such a thing elsewhere in userspace, but I digress). Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 13:26, 14 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Multiple infoboxes

edit

Hello. Is it permissible to add multiple infoboxes in the same article; I mean, for example, in an article of military campaigns, several conflicts can be occurred. Should we add use a single infobox (in the lead) or, can we use seperate infoboxes wrt the events (in the section). Imperial[AFCND] 13:39, 14 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@ImperialAficionado: Hello! I think it's acceptable, I've seen some articles with multiple infoboxes. Deltaspace42 (talkcontribs) 13:49, 14 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thankyou. But I have one more question. Can we add infoboxes for very less significant events, which was the part of the main event? Like, battles within the wars? Imperial[AFCND] 13:57, 14 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Let me show an example; I have created Ghaznavid campaigns in India. In that article, I have added 20+ military conflicts. Can I add infoboxes for all of them? Imperial[AFCND] 13:59, 14 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@ImperialAficionado: I think three infoboxes max would be reasonable, 20+ would be overkill. If the reader wants to know more about the specific battle, they would just go to its article (following the internal link) which contains its own infobox. Deltaspace42 (talkcontribs) 14:03, 14 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
But there is a problem too. There is a problem that most of the battles don't have seperate articles. Inorder to avoid the creation of articles that fails GNG, we adds that into the parent article. But yes. I got it. Creating infoboxes for all will be a real mess. Imperial[AFCND] 14:13, 14 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Douglas Pitt site deleted

edit

I am Douglas Pitt and it looks like user Bbb23 deleted my site on Oct 15, 2023. I would like the site restored and like to know the source that deleted this site. I appreciate any help. Thank you. 173.24.247.247 (talk) 18:23, 14 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia's article entitled "Douglas Pitt" was deleted, as you say, for being unambiguous advertising.
It sounds as it, like many people, you have a fundamental misunderstanding of what Wikipedia is.
If you meet Wikipedia's criteria for notability - which generally means that there is enough independent material published about you to base an article on - then there could be an article about you. It would not be "your site", it would not be under your control, and it would not necessarily say what you wanted it to say. (See an article about yourself isn't necessarily a good thing).
It should be based almost 100% on what those independent reliable sources have published about you, not on what you or your associates say or want to say. It should preferably not be written by you or your associates, though this is not absolutely forbidden.
If you do not meet the criteria for notability - like most of us - then there cannot be an article about you. ColinFine (talk) 18:58, 14 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Should a Dubai Bus article exist?

edit

Hi! Im a member of the WikiProject Dubai and im super confused if an article about its bus services exist or not as the other emirates in the country such as Abu Dhabi have it while Dubai doesnt. And im pretty sure it will be a sub article for the RTA Dubai. So should it exist or not? ThatOneFilipinoExtremeist (talk) 20:05, 14 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

There are generally three reasons why an article doesn't exist:
  1. Nobody has written it yet
  2. An article did exist, but has been deleted
  3. The subject does not meet Wikipedia's criteria for notability.
(More than one of the above can apply).
If you think that "bus services in Dubai" has enough sources that it is Wikipedia-notable, then you're welcome to create it. (But I notice that you have not so far created any articles, so I strongly advise that you use the articles for creation system, and make a careful study of your first article before you try). ColinFine (talk) 21:23, 14 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well, i checked that "List of bus routes in Dubai" got deleted for some reasons so its best ill not make it..Ill just add a sub article for it.. Thank you! ThatOneFilipinoExtremeist (talk) 20:56, 15 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Heads up: potential 3RR

edit

This isn't serious enough yet for the admin attention board, but also I believe in sounding alarm bells as soon as possible so here goes.

@Bondegezou and I have encountered a bit of borderline edit warring/3RR behaviour over at List of elected British politicians who have changed party affiliation. I've warned @JWarrenator here [1].

Not long after my talk page message, an IP editor magically appeared to make exactly the same edit being disputed : https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=List_of_elected_British_politicians_who_have_changed_party_affiliation&oldid=1195653532

I don't want to get too deep into this, and don't want to let this get too far, too quickly, too soon.

I am baffled at what is going on. Chris Skidmore resigned his Tory Whip according to many news sources therefore I have added him to the list. I also added Andrew Bridgen leaving Reclaim and there was no problem there. JWarrenator (talk) 23:18, 14 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Not according to the Commons website: https://members.parliament.uk/member/4021/career.
As we're all close to edit warring and 3RR violations I'll have to leave this for now, though that's the next step. doktorb wordsdeeds 03:38, 15 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have yet to see an RS saying he resigned the whip. I looked at the citations provided previously and they didn’t make a single reference to the whip. I am happy to look at some other citations.
Bridgen is an entirely different case. I am unclear why bring Bridgen up. Bondegezou (talk) 13:48, 15 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How can I find an image for the Nazca Ridge MPA for my draft?

edit

Hello, I'm currently making a draft on the fishing industry in Peru and tried to search Wikimedia commons for images on the Nazca Ridge MPA. However, I only really found images on the Nazca Ridge itself and have fallen back on that, however, it's not nearly as informative as having an image of the actual reserve. I've found images online, such as this and this, however, I'm not sure of their copyright protections. Is there any other way I could get an image of the Nazca Ridge MPA? SonOfYoutubers (talk) 22:30, 14 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@SonOfYoutubers: You might try a friendly e-mail to the folks who run the organization. Explain how Commons copyright works and request that one of them upload a properly-licensed picture. Offer to help, and explain why a good picture in a good Wikipedia article might be an advantage to the organization. -Arch dude (talk) 01:10, 15 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Arch dude: I think that could be a good idea, but I also got this idea after I posted this: Can I make my own map with the ridge mapped out based on those sources and upload it to commons? SonOfYoutubers (talk) 01:19, 15 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@SonOfYoutubers: Yes, you may create a map, but you must not incorporate any "creative element" from any copyrighted sources. This should not be a problem. The information itself is explicitly not a "creative element". You should however cite your sources on the image description page of your uploaded map. You will own the copyright on your map as "own work", and you will therefore be able to upload it with a CC-BY-SA license. -Arch dude (talk) 05:29, 15 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Arch dude Thank you for the help! I've been able to upload the file here. SonOfYoutubers (talk) 17:05, 15 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
