Eχιδνα

edit

On the "Echidna (mythology)" page, when I click on the Greek word "Eχιδνα" the page I am presented with is as follows, no results: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%E1%BC%9C%CF%87%CE%B9%CE%B4%CE%BD%CE%B1. JackkBrown (talk) 03:31, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

For me, it redirects to the correct page after a brief pause. RudolfRed (talk) 03:58, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I had the same issue JackkBrown did, so I changed how the wiktionary link was formatted. RudolfRed, since you saw the intended link target, can you confirm I've pointed the link to the correct wiktionary page? Folly Mox (talk) 05:16, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not RudolfRed, but yes, both links wind up on the same Wiktionary page. Deor (talk) 14:30, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That's... not such a good idea. Wiktionary was autoredirecting you to the wrong page, about an Ancient Greek word for "snake", rather than the one for a specific named monster; they deliberately distinguish entries by case. Now, even if they do write an entry for the monster, we're still pointing to the wrong place (like if they were trying to point at our Echidna (mythology) and linked to echidna instead). See, for example, the etymology at wikt:Echidna, which links both the upper- and lowercase entries. —Cryptic 02:59, 21 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question about non free images

edit

If someone has a life sentence in prison can you use a reduced resolution non-free image for their biography article? A friend of mine asked this question and got the answer no, you can't, but looking at more discussions it seems ambiguous. For example, Terry Nichols, a high profile, decent quality article, uses a non-free image despite the fact Nichols is still alive, and so do dozens of other articles of prisoners who are not dead but have life in prison. However, the upload wizard only states if the person is dead. PARAKANYAA (talk) 03:35, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The answer is probably "it depends". Who is the person and what photo are you trying to use? WP:MCQ is a good place to ask about copyright and WP:NFCC questions. RudolfRed (talk) 04:02, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@PARAKANYAA: You might look at the description pages of the Terry Nichols image and the "dozens of others" you found. Each such image should have a detailed justification on its description page. If you can create an equivalent detailed justification for your case, you can upload the image. You may need to use the manual upload procedure, or upload using the wizard and then edit the description page. If you cannot provide a detailed justification that addresses all of the non-free criteria, then you cannot upload the image. -Arch dude (talk) 17:17, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Ref number 109 is in red - I am always confused. Please fix. I cannot. Thanks 175.38.42.62 (talk) 04:12, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Could you possibly either (A) add a new request to an existing thread or (B) put a new request into a new thread with a new (different) title? (Or would this confuse you?) -- Hoary (talk) 08:39, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

How to write a new LPW Living Person Wiki

edit

Pls send me complete link and method to start writing about a living person, on wikipedia. Create new page ManojModani (talk) 04:43, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, ManojModani. First, read Your first article. Then read the Notability guideline for people. Then, read the critically important policy on Biographies of living people. If you are the person in question, read about how writing an autobiography is strongly discouraged. Cullen328 (talk) 05:00, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. ManojModani (talk) 05:24, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@User:Tenryuu, User:Hoary, User:Folly Mox, and more volunteers, would you mind replacing the main page of WikiLeaks please?

Can you update the screenshot of WikiLeaks please as of this day to reflect some major changes in its portal? 2001:EE0:4BC4:C1D0:8C60:E4FE:CDA3:8239 (talk) 10:13, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see any screenshots in that article – can you point more specifically to what you're referring to? Tollens (talk) 10:16, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Tollens, you can check the screenshot of the home page of WikiLeaks, which was posted so oldly, in 2011. 2001:EE0:4BC4:C1D0:8C60:E4FE:CDA3:8239 (talk) 10:20, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, found it – to anyone else, it's hidden in the infobox underneath the logo. Tollens (talk) 10:21, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Tollens, so anyone, including you, should have an ability to update it. As I am an anonymous editor, I must wait for 4 days to change the content in case I was logged in. 2001:EE0:4BC4:C1D0:8C60:E4FE:CDA3:8239 (talk) 10:24, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, working on it. Tollens (talk) 10:25, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. Great to see you being active in this community. 2001:EE0:4BC4:C1D0:C19F:C86:76EB:92C7 (talk) 10:29, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  Done Tollens (talk) 10:36, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Tollens, I also found the screenshot illustrating the home page of WikiBooks which is now old, updated in 2009. 2001:EE0:4BC4:C1D0:C19F:C86:76EB:92C7 (talk) 10:49, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
For some reason the image in the center of the page isn't loading on my computer so I'll have to leave that one to someone else. Tollens (talk) 10:54, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
My only device is my phone, so I'm probably not the best person to update the screenshot. Folly Mox (talk) 15:50, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I updated it anyway. I did a pretty bad job and typoed the filename. If anyone else feels like improving on this, please go ahead. Folly Mox (talk) 02:59, 20 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I'm tanoli and I have read many historic books of tanoli and ghilji and it confirmed that tanoli is tano khail which is ghilji tribe

I'm tanoli and I have read many historic books of tanoli and ghilji and it confirmed that tanoli is tano khail which is ghilji tribe 39.62.188.14 (talk) 10:27, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

If you have a suggestion for an article, then please go to that article's talk page and make the suggestion there. Be sure to cite one or more specific sources for each specific suggestion: vaguely alluding to "many historic books" won't be adequate. -- Hoary (talk) 12:04, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Fixing a reference

edit

I have a reference to fix on Zeta2 Librae. Can anyone help me? 117daveawesome (talk) 13:53, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@117daveawesome:   Fixed by Ira Leviton. GoingBatty (talk) 16:58, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

On primo, how do I redirect users to the paragraph where primo is mentioned? JackkBrown (talk) 14:32, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

JackkBrown you could use [[Italian meal structure#Formal meal structure|Primo]]. Alternatively, you could divide the section on Formal meal structure into subsections (see the format of the section on Daytime meal structure) and then use [[Italian meal structure#Primo|Primo]]. TSventon (talk) 14:45, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@TSventon: done, thanks. JackkBrown (talk) 14:58, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Correct grammar for ellipses turned into semicolons

edit

The New York Times, March 20, 1932, p. 7. Excerpts: "an artist specializing in advertising"; "studied at the National Academy of Design."; "member of the Highland Methodist Church."

I inserted the above reference into the article: Paul Martin (illustrator). I'd like to know if there is anything wrong with the grammar. It's an excerpt of a direct quote. Notes: 1. There is a skipped sentence or two between the words "advertising & studied", and "Design & member." Hence the two semicolons. 2. There is a period after the word "Design" because that word ends the sentence in the original NY Times text. 3. The words "an", "studied" & "member" were in lower case in the original text. Thanks. JimPercy (talk) 15:57, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I assume that this is about Paul Martin (illustrator), ref. 129. It is cited in support of the statement "The service was held at Highland (Ossining United) Methodist Church". I don't understand why you've chosen to quote the first two of those three phrases; but given that you have, separating them by semicolons seems fine. Maproom (talk) 16:40, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Correct on Ref. number. I only altered that last part for simplification purposes at this help desk. It more correctly reads:
Excerpts: "an artist specializing in advertising"; "studied at the National Academy of Design."; "Funeral services with be held Tuesday in the Highland Methodist Church." So, I reckon it all looks fine. Okay, thanks. PS: I quoted for its worthy detail (from a vintage source), as many would not take the time to search that newspaper. I realize that the quotation part could all be omitted. JimPercy (talk) 18:22, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Rollback vs Twinkle

edit

Are there differences between Twinkle and the Rollback user right, I have made some considerations about becoming a rollback (just not right now) and I have found twinkle to be finicky. Subariba (talk) 19:02, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

You might want to have a read of Wikipedia talk:Rollback#Purpose_of_rollback_right. The difference can be summarised fairly simply. Twinkle can be finicky, but it can be used for many things (restoring specific revisions, leaving warnings, nominating pages for deletion, and a lot more). Rollback does only one thing, and it does it better than anything else. That thing is described in the first sentence of the rollback page. -- zzuuzz (talk) 19:24, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Is it rude to remove superfluous references?

edit

This is something I often come across when looking for stubs to expand. Say for instance, there's an article on [random town] in Poland. The only text is "[random town] is a town in Poland", with a citation to "Encyclopedia of Polish towns", which is a source I cannot access. If I have a source that discusses [random town] in extensive detail, is it rude or distasteful to simply remove the now-redundant earlier reference, especially when the source is such a general one? Anonymous 19:49, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Absolutely not: sources are there to be useful. It's nice to have multiple independent references, but if a reference is particularly weak or redundant, replacing it is absolutely the right thing to do. See WP:OVERKILL for further thoughts and rules of thumb on this.
Specific to your example: an encyclopedia is a tertiary source, and secondary sources are pretty much always preferred to tertiary sources for WP:V purposes. However, ease of accessibility is not usually in itself a criterion to how strong or weak a given source is. Remsense 19:52, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@An anonymous username, not my real name: Not all sources need to be online and some may be behind a paywall which is fine. You should not remove a source just because you don't have access. Ask at WP:RX to see if someone else can access it for you. RudolfRed (talk) 20:03, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Two citations is hardly overkill in my opinion. RudolfRed (talk) 20:05, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I see that my answer is redundant, apologies. RudolfRed (talk) 20:07, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I would say if you cannot access a source it's hard for you to evaluate its usefulness... perhaps it doesn't go into a lot of depth (again, you don't know as you haven't seen it), but it might have futher citations which would be useful to future editors. "Agri Valley" or "Agri valley"? In the "Area of production" paragraph (at the end of the paragraph) of the "Peperone di Senise" page

edit

Hi, is it correct to write "Agri Valley" or "Agri valley"? JackkBrown (talk) 20:43, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@JackkBrown: All words in a proper name should be capitalized (with the typical exceptions: the, a, etc.), so "Agri Valley" is correct. Tollens (talk) 20:59, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Tollens, your response seems to assume that "Agri Valley" is a proper name, rather than that "Agri" is the proper name (of the valley). Neither position strikes me as very obviously either right or wrong. What does seem obvious to me is that the place for a question such as this is Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Capital letters, because that's where people who care deeply about such matters congregate. -- Hoary (talk) 22:43, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Hoary: Certainly the matter could be taken there. I'm not sure how it could be interpreted in such a way that "valley" is not included in the name – if phrased as "Agri River valley" certainly it would then not be part of the name, but "Agri" could not, standing on its own, refer to the valley any more than "Superior" on its own refers to Lake Superior. Tollens (talk) 22:53, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I know this isn't the first time someone has told you, but have you considered reading the Manual of Style? It answers the vast majority of the questions I've seen you ask here. Remsense 03:57, 20 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
