edit

Need to add new information to a page I created about a decade ago.

edit

Today when I created the additional info and image, it was dismissed as not being able to verify that the material and image belong to us. We are the actual artist's Studio and we want to make updates. Can someone help me do this? Maddogtoys (talk) 00:43, 26 July 2020 (UTC)iodatum[reply]

@Maddogtoys: Could you give us some context? The account you're editing from has no contributions other than this request. If your signature was supposed to be for User:Iodatum, the only article they've edited was Stephen Holland (artist), which hasn't been edited for just over a year.
What is the article you're trying to edit?
What account(s) were involved, since it's clearly not the one you're using now? Ian.thomson (talk) 00:49, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
But in any case, Maddogtoys, it sounds as if you're trying to edit an article about somebody you work with, and upload copyright material. If that is that case, you need first to read about editing with a conflict of interest, and then to understand that we accept copyright material only if the copyright holder has explicitly released it under a licence such as CC-BY-SA, which allows anybody to reuse or modify it for any purpose. If the copyright holder is willing to do that, then please see donating copyright materials for how to do it. --ColinFine (talk) 10:08, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You have got to help me with this one. I just cited a source regarding the delays of the live-action Mulan, and the respective sequels to Top Gun and A Quiet Place. Call me when you get the chance 01:03, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Call me when you get the chance, you only used the ref name when the first instance doesn't even have a link to the source you're using. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 01:27, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Details about the error can be found here. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 01:28, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I'm still stuck. How do I merge the sources into one source? Call me when you get the chance 01:34, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Call me when you get the chance, your first instance of using the name should have the information inside it:
<ref name="example name">reference information goes here</ref>
Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 02:25, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
That didn't help. Why don't you try it? I suck at this. Call me when you get the chance 02:35, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Have I now fixed all that needed to be fixed? -- Hoary (talk) 03:41, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Now I need you to merge the three sources into one. Call me when you get the chance 03:49, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I might do this, if you specified the sources that you want merged. (And use of "please" wouldn't hurt.) -- Hoary (talk) 03:58, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
This is the source I'm talking about. Call me when you get the chance 04:26, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Done. -- Hoary (talk) 04:49, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Citing date for magazine interview copied to website

edit

Another user recommended not citing the date given for the magazine, since I don't have a copy of it, but I don't know when it was copied to the website, so could anyone hear here please give me some advice on the subject?--Thylacine24 (talk) 02:05, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

We can never trust that the transcription is accurate; so I would just give the data for the interview as it appears on the website, add something like "(credited to Zine Name)" and put the access date for the website. --Orange Mike | Talk 02:46, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Orangemike: Thanks for telling me. That's in contradiction to what Trappist the monk said, though. (Edit: Sorry to be passive-aggressively accusatory towards you in my response to Trappist the monk.)--Thylacine24 (talk) 03:50, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Orangemike: The date credited to the magazine is "[s]pring 1987". That doesn't fit in the date format; could you please give me some advice?--Thylacine24 (talk) 12:20, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Orangemike: Wait, my bad. It turns out that it wasn't using the season that was wrong, it's that the "credited to" parenthetical you suggested caused it. Sorry to be accusatory towards you. (Edit: Sorry also to be passive-aggressive about it, and to repeat this action in my one of my responses to Trappist the monk below.)--Thylacine24 (talk) 12:25, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)
That would be me? If you cannot determine the date, leave it out. Simple.
Trappist the monk (talk) 02:51, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Trappist the monk: Thanks. Orangemike gave different advice, though, so I'm confused. (Edit: And yes, that would be you. Also sorry to be passive-aggressively accusatory towards you in my response to Orangemike, and also to go against your suggestion for less apologies.)--Thylacine24 (talk) 03:50, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
This is Wikipedia. We do not all march in lockstep. The decision is yours to make. I think you should cite the website and not the magazine because WP:SAYWHEREYOUREADIT. If the website does not give you a date, then there is no date to put in |date=. I agree with editor Orangemike that you should include |access-date=. Because the website credits the magazine, and because we don't really know that that is an accurate credit, I would not add "(credited to Zine Name)".
No more apologies to me until I ask you for one. Ever.
Trappist the monk (talk) 11:12, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Trappist the monk: Okay, then. Thanks. (Edit: Added reply template.) --Thylacine24 (talk) 12:10, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Trappist the monk: Also, I just realized that the sentence I'm adding, with the citation I'm including, includes bringing up the year. Could you please tell me if I should leave that out as well? No offense, but I think I'm liking Orangemike's idea better. (Edit: Added reply template.)--Thylacine24 (talk) 12:16, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Trappist the monk: Nevermind, the "credited to" parenthetical caused format problems.--Thylacine24 (talk) 12:27, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Trappist the monk: Oh wait, you suggested just leaving the date out. I'll do that, thanks.--Thylacine24 (talk) 16:39, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

This is the statement below, I found when I looked for my page. On 1 Nov 2019 "The Blade of the Northern Light" deleted my page..... how is that possible???? I had put hours into my pages and all is gone. Can it be retrieved? thank you Donna Hreys

@Donna Hreys: As the deletion reason says, your userpage was deleted as you were using Wikipedia server space as a webhost for your own private reasons. I cannot view what your userpage used to look like, but odds are it was too well done and may have been done for self-promotion. If you're looking to promote yourself or some product, this is unfortunately not the site for you. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 04:25, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It was an incomplete but already lengthy hybrid of CV and autobiography. This is something that you, Donna Hreys, may wish to construct on your own website. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. Therefore this sort of thing doesn't belong in Wikipedia, and it was rightly deleted. -- Hoary (talk) 06:53, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Donna Hreys: Please read WP:USERPAGE to see what the page is supposed to be used for. It's basically to tell other editors what you do to improve Wikipedia. One or two sentences about your qualifications as may be relevant, but the rest of the page should talk about the kind of things you do, have done, or intend to do to improve the encyclopedia. -Arch dude (talk) 18:51, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Committee for Non-Violent Action

edit

Hexadecster (talk) 06:24, 26 July 2020 (UTC)RE: [for Nonviolent Action] During the summer of 1962 my parents and I participated in a walk for nuclear disarmament organized by CNVA-West, and spanning over 500 miles (508.7 according to Google). I attempted an edit, but was blocked due to abuse through the T-Mobile network, my hotspot vehicle. I have no documentation (though there may be some in my mother's files), and can find no reference to it online, so my information is anecdotal only. We walked as far as Salinas, as I had to return to begin my junior year of high school. I was 14 years old, and am a second-generation pacifist and conscious objector. Here is my proposed text. Should anyone see fit to insert it, be willing and able to do so, I would appreciate it.[reply]

In the summer of 1962 a California arm of the organization organized and conducted a walk from the Submarine Base at Point Loma (San Diego) to Vallejo, California's Mare Island Naval Shipyard, where the Polaris nuclear submarines were constructed, a 500-mile journey calling for unilateral nuclear disarmament. The logo for CNVA-West featured the symbol for Nuclear Disarmament, designed in 1958 by British graphic designer and Christian pacifist Gerald Holtom. Lending urgency to the issue was the occurrence of the Cuban Missile Crisis that same year, and set against the escalation of the Vietnam War during the Kennedy administration.

No, Wikipedia can only use published sources. If you find newspaper cuttings that identify the newspaper and the date, these may be usable. -- Hoary (talk) 06:45, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

MOS question

edit

Hi Folks, would be normal in relation to the [{WP:MOS]] to do this (三沢 光晴, Misawa Mitsuharu, June 18, 1962 – June 13, 2009), all in one enclosing bracket. I'm doing A GA on Misawa Mitsuharu. I'm assuming from practical viewpoint it is ok. Thanks.scope_creepTalk 13:06, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Also while I am here. Would it be normal to provide a language definition of a name e.g. (四天王, Shitennō) in brackets, without identifying the language, in relation to the WP:MOS. Thanks.
If I was reviewing this at GAN, I'd definately ask you to identify what these things are. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 13:10, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
(i) I don't see anything wrong with "(三沢 光晴, Misawa Mitsuharu, June 18, 1962 – June 13, 2009)" other than that I'd use Template:Nihongo2 for 「三沢 光晴」. (ii) What do you mean by "language definition of a name"? -- Hoary (talk) 13:19, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Lee Vilenski:, @Hoary: There is a lang-de template for stating it is German language, which I used to use. Lee Vilenski, So would ask them to qualify them, possibly provide a link and provide a language link describing them, on one them anyway, what language they are? It not immediately clear it is not Japanese. This e.g. 三沢 光晴, translates exactly to Misawa Mitsuharu. This one 四天王, can be linked, although there is an English version of it. scope_creepTalk 13:22, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I think that's the point really - we should really be explicit to general readers. I had no idea what language it was. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 13:26, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with Lee Vilenski in regards to using a more specific lang template if possible. While I understand the kanji to be used for Japanese, uninformed readers may look at that and assume it's Chinese (especially with 四天王). —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 14:23, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The article doesn't currently give the Sino-Japanese word shitennō, let alone add that it's 四天王. And I don't think that it needs to. Three other gratuitous comments. (i) 王 means "king", 道 means "road", but 王道 doesn't mean "king's road". (ii) The phrasing of the article seems ponderous: "Named after the Four Heavenly Kings, this nomenclature was given to the four by Shohei Baba" → "Named (by Shohei Baba) after the Four Heavenly Kings". If publishers shout at their readers in FULL CAPS, we can and should ignore this: "WWE GETS NBC SPECIAL BACK WHEN THAT MEANT A LOT MORE, MAJOR JAPANESE NAMES GET MARRIED, MORE ON EXPANSION OF WWF AND WCW PPVS, TONS MORE" → "WWE gets NBC special back when that meant a lot more, major Japanese names get married, more on expansion of WWF and WCW PPVS, tons more". -- Hoary (talk) 23:04, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

edit my own wikipedia page

I am TRYING to edit the wikipedia page on myself, Lynn Freed (writer). I have followed directions, but, when I try to complete the corrections, I am told I do not have the right to correct it. This is maddening. I would rather have the page taken down than to have it up incorrectly. Please help! Reverts

edit

Hi guys,

I thought I did some good work on Philippe de Villiers, but my edits were reverted twice without an explanation. Could you take a look and reinstate them if you deem the work is good?

Thanks,

YaYaHoPi (talk) 20:25, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

MarnetteD, do you mind clarifying your revert for this editor? Thanks, Ed6767 talk! 20:30, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
He's been active numerous times since you posted that message, so I guess he's just not going to answer. 10:15, 27 July 2020 (UTC)
Ed6767 Can you reinstate my edits? I would also like to point out that my edits on Bill Frist, primarily correcting links, have been reverted by the same user. Looks like harassment to me. YaYaHoPi (talk) 14:34, 27 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
First, Ed6767 I have not seen this thread before now because pings do not work when you add them to an already existing post. Next, I will note that I used edit summaries while YaYaHoPi (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) has barely used them at all. Labeling another persons edit as vandalism is not a proper move either. Y could also have started a discussion on the talk page per WP:BRD but chose to come here instead. Throwing around a term like harassment causes me to have doubts about this editor but I will WP:AGF from this point on. I will close by stating that AGF is a two way street and I have seen none from this editor as yet. MarnetteD|Talk 16:37, 27 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

On the other hand, under "Amhara people," it was noted that 195,260[a][2] Amhara living in United States.

One source, fore example, indicated below.

Is it lack of knowledge or bias due to ethnic tension in the country.

"Bias due to ethnic tension in the country [the USA?]" is unlikely because Wikipedia is a resource written by and for all English Language speakers throughout the world: it's not specifically American.
With "lack of knowledge" you are probably more correct. You may notice that in the Oromo people article, each of the overseas populations listed, including the two you mentioned above, are cited to a Reliable Source.
In order to list the corresponding number for Oromo people in the USA, Wikipedia needs to cite a similar reliable source that gives that number. While the source you have referenced certainly confirms that there are some Oromo in the USA (or at least that there were 250 at a demonstration in Minnesota in 2014), it does not give their total number in the USA. Can you find a reliable source that does? {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 2.221.80.201 (talk) 03:40, 27 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
