Signature

edit

Hello. I've spent so much time, but I can't seem to get my signature right. I'm not fluent in the markup code, so I've been testing it out a lot. Below is the source code I put. The "Melo" should have blue text and a black background, and the "fors" should have black text and a blue background. However, this isn't working out how I planned.

I also ran into something weird. Using the code in my userpage, you can see on my userpage (you'll see at the beginning of my userpage) that the signature actually looks exactly how it's supposed to, expect the signature link doesn't work.

Could someone help me out to make the signature colors look how it's supposed to?

<span style="font-weight:bold;padding:1px;background-color:#000000;color:#00ffae">Melo</span><span style="font-weight:bold;padding:1px;background-color:#00ffae;color:#000000">fors</span>

Melofors

Melofors 00:55, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Here you go: Melofors <b style="padding:1px;background:black;color:#0fb">Melo</b><b style="padding:1px;background:#0fb;color:black;>fors</b>. The blue color of the link took precedent so you need to add these spans inside the link. On your user page the links in your signature just turn bold instead of being links since they point to the same page they're on. – Thjarkur (talk) 01:05, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Þjarkur: Ah, that makes sense. I really appreciate your time, but unfortunately, when I insert your code in Preferences, I get an error message saying it's invalid. Here's a screenshot of what I see: https://imgur.com/a/JLldRvm Sorry for the bother. Melofors 03:05, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Melofors: There is a missing quotation mark. This works: <b style="padding:1px;background:black;color:#0fb">Melo</b><b style="padding:1px;background:#0fb;color:black;">fors</b>. PrimeHunter (talk) 03:20, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

I want to know this about. how to create the new user name. I am not able to edit my old content. will share any link where i get all information.

That's because of this "10:01, 3 December 2019 Stwalkerster talk contribs deleted page User:Anuraj Sandhu (G11: Unambiguous advertising or promotion)". You really should go read those bright pink banners at the top of your user page. Follow the bluelinks for explanations, especially this one WP:NOTADVERTISING. Hello, Anuraj Sandhu. I am an administrator and took a look at your deleted userpage. It was a business advertisment. Okay i will update my new content and not advertisement. I have to change my user name or not. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Anuraj Sandhu (talkcontribs) 05:53, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

If it is the name of a company/org you should, see WP:ISU. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:14, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
But otherwise the name is fine, Anuraj Sandhu. But before you recreate your user page, please read WP:User pages to understand what may go there. You may put almost anything there that is relevant to your activities as a Wikipedia editor: that is what it is for. You may include a small amount of more general information about yourself, but nothing that looks promotional.
Before you do any further work on Draft:Canam consultants Ltd. you need to read and comply with WP:COI and WP:PAID. You'll then need to read WP:NCORP: I've only looked at the first three references in that draft, but they are all to statements which come from you and your colleagues. Wikipedia is basically not interested in what the subject of an article says about itself: it is only interested in what people who have no connection with the subject have chosen to publish about it. If all you are trying to do is to get information about your company on Wikipedia, then I suggest you stop, and find another site to promote it: you will have a very frustrating time trying to do it on Wikipedia. --ColinFine (talk) 17:00, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The content for the Canam Wikipedia that was attempted to be uploaded has been kept as a draft and not approved. The reference links that are attached in the content are credible media links covering the news of the company. The Awards and Certificates and the Major Cities section from the content have been removed as well. Please suggest what I should do to create the Canam Wikipedia company page. There are companies such as IDP and Edwise International having the Wiki page live, and Canam Consultants is also having content akin to them. The nature of the work of Canam is the same as that of IDP and Edwise. I have read the publishing terms and conditions of Wikipedia and uploaded my content as per those. Therefore I request you to please approve my Canam Wikipedia page content and make the page live. which links i will not use let me know i can remove that from the reference. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Anuraj Sandhu (talkcontribs) 06:33, 5 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Wondering when artist Paul Robinson's entry will be up

edit

Paul Robinson Nina Simone's drummer for her final 19 years and Van Morrison's drummer and who has worked with so many huge names and venues; Someone called Richard Seaglove apparently recently did the entire Wiki entry and said several months ago that it would be up. Paul is about to release a biography of his time with Nina Simone. We are wondering why his Wiki entry is not up yet. Really important for agents and publishers to see it up here before the book is released. Can you perhaps let me know why it's not yet up there? Is it still being verified? Blessings and many thanks for Wiki Rebecca <email address redacted> — Preceding unsigned comment added by PoeticPlenties (talkcontribs) 09:44, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

There is no Wikipedia editor with a username of Richard Seaglove. The only draft with a name of Paul Robinson is Draft:Paul Robinson (wrestler). You also need to be aware that Wikipedia is not here for promotion. --David Biddulph (talk) 10:13, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I'm afraid, Rebecca, that it sounds awfully much as if you have been taken by a scam artist. Maybe not: maybe this was somebody in good faith; but neither David Biddulph nor I can find any hint of either Richard Seaglove or a draft about Robinson. (It's perfectly possible that Seaglove is an editor using a pseudonym, in which case we have no hope of finding him). Nobody can guarantee that a particular article will be accepted, and certainly not that it will be accepted by any particular time. Since Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia, which may not be used for promotion of any kind, there is no deadline. Bluntly, Wikipedia is not interested in whether agents and publishers see it here or not. --ColinFine (talk) 17:17, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I want to Post My COMPANY's Info

Greeting! I am really a fan of Wikipedia and the authentic, free and quality information it delivers to all across the globe. For my company, I am really keen to discover that is there any way or source, I can put universal details of my company at Wikipedia? If so, then I am looking forward to the guidance for all people reading this. Thanks in Advance! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Quickfitautos (talkcontribs) 10:30, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Quickfitautos! Short version: don't try. Longer version: WP:COI. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 10:38, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Quickfitautos Wikipedia is an encyclopedia and not a place for companies to tell the world about themselves. Wikipedia is only interested in what independent reliable sources with significant coverage state about companies that can show how that company meets Wikipedia's special definition of a notable company. Wikipedia is not interested in what a company wants to say about itself. Because of this, not every company merits an article here, even within the same field. Wikipedia has no interest in enhancing search results for your company or aiding your potential customers.
You also would have what we call a conflict of interest and are a paid editor. You must comply with those policies(the latter is a Terms of Use requirement and mandatory). For that reason, you should avoid directly editing about your company. If you have reviewed the definition of a notable company and truly feel that your company meets the definition, you should allow independent editors to take note of your company and write about it on their own. Also keep in mind that a Wikipedia article is not necessarily desirable. There are good reasons to not want one. You cannot lock it to the text you might prefer or prevent others from editing it. Any information about your company, good or bad, could go in such an article as long as it appears in an independent source. 331dot (talk) 10:45, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

How to publish a draft?

edit

Hi,

I created a draft (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:LEEDS_JEWISH_WELFARE_BOARD) and I am not sure what the next step is? How do I get this page live? Thank you for your help!

Nobenfo — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nobenfo (talkcontribs) 11:01, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Nobenfo You can use Articles for Creation to submit your draft for review- but as it is now it has almost no chance of being accepted, as it is essentially an advertisement for the organization. Submitting it for review now would just, frankly, waste your time and that of the reviewer. If you work for this organization, you need to review conflict of interest and paid editing. You should also review Your First Article and perhaps use the new user tutorial to learn more about Wikipedia and the process of creating an article.
Please understand that Wikipedia articles must summarize what independent reliable sources with significant coverage state about the subject, and not what the subject wants to say about itself. The organization must be shown to meet the special definition of a notable organization that Wikipedia has. 331dot (talk) 11:08, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Nobenfo (agreeing with the other responses) you may want to look at other similar organizations. See the entries in the Charities row of Template:British_Jewry.Naraht (talk) 19:21, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

How to open a AfD group nomination

edit

A larger number of articles in Category:Technical_festivals_in_India needed a AfD than I expected. I'm wondering how I could open a group nomination over a list of them instead of AfDing problem articles as I come across them. --MoonyTheDwarf (Braden N.) (talk) 14:18, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Moonythedwarf, There are detailed instructions at Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion#How to nominate multiple related pages for deletion.
Do note, However, the caution there: An article with a fair or better chance of standing on its own merits should not be bundled— nominate it separately. For the avoidance of doubt, bundling should not be used to form consensus around policy decisions such as "should Wikipedia include this type of article". Bundling AfDs should be used only for clear-cut deletion discussions based on existing policy. If you're unsure, don't bundle it. It might well be that some festivals have sources that would tend to demonstrate notability, and others do not.
If you do a bundled nomination, I would advise a careful WP:BEFORE search on every separate article, and throguh notiofication of the creators and major contributors, lest there be eventual pushack at WP:DRV, and more importantly so that we do not miss sources, including sources that might be in languages other than English. DES (talk)DESiegel Contribs 15:29, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Moonythedwarf, I have noted that you have made multiple deletion requests using CSD, PROD and AFD in a matter of few minutes some of them clearly notable. FYI I have found that he AfDed 9 Articles, 7 PRODs and 6 CSDs. It is quite clear to me that you have not followed the "careful WP:BEFORE search on every separate article" that DES had advised you to do. This is a gross misuse of the Deletion process and is considered disruptive editing. You should now withdraw nominations that you feel were made improperly and make sure that this does not gets repeated again in future. Failure to do so may lead to sanctions on your account. --DBigXray 12:10, 5 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
DBigXray, I am not a perfect judge, but I will double-check my judgement and remove any AfDs that are not appropriate. I apologize. I will need a bit to check again, as I am currently not in a place I can do so immediately. Is it possible to deadline at 6PM EST at earliest? This will give me roughly 3 hours of time where I can reinvestigate uninterrupted. MoonyTheDwarf (Braden N.) (talk) 13:55, 5 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
"I am not a perfect judge", well, no one is perfect, but when we give yourself time to do the necessary WP:BEFORE you make a decision to the best of your judgement. Rushing things and doing mass deletions like this will inevitably lead to multiple notable articles getting deleted for lack of due consideration. I appreciate that you acknowledge my concern are willing to do a thorough re-check, of your nominations. Once you get time for editing, please do it, before you do anything else on Wikipedia. regard--DBigXray 15:22, 5 December 2019 (UTC)s.[reply]

log in problems

I have a page under review but it won't let me log in and says there is no email associated with the page. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.163.249.131 (talk) 15:59, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

If you added an email address to your account under your Preferences, you should be able to use it to recover your password. Make sure that your email address is typed correctly(the caps lock is off, for one) and that it is the right email address. If that does not work, there is nothing else that can be done as that is the only way to recover your password. In that circumstance, you would need to create a new account and identify it as a successor to your original account.
I'll add that you should still be able to look at your draft page whether or not you are logged in. 331dot (talk) 16:02, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Post / user placing information for "donations" through crowdfunding - TSLAQ

edit

Someone posted information about Crowdfunding a cause for TSLAQ. IE they are asking for money for their group. Isn't this against Wikipedia's mission?

TSLAQ post seems to have been created by an anonymous person and they added the following:

Crowdfunding Using GoFundMe, TSLAQ members led by former Seeking Alpha writer and Tesla short seller Lawrence Fossi ran a campaign for and contributed to the defense fund of fellow member, Randeep Hothi, who was initially sued by Tesla, accruing in excess of one-hundred thousand USD. Mr. Hothi allegedly chased a car full of Tesla employees and attempted to cause an accident by driving erratically to confuse the car's Autopilot system, among other things. The request for a temporary restraining order against Hothi was eventually dropped by Tesla.[7]

They are basically telling people where to go to contribute to their cause on wikipedia. Then they had their post put under "protection."

Hi all, I wonder if someone could please advise me (or point the way to where to ask) on the copyright status of Early Science in Oxford Vol III (1st pub. 1925, facsimile reprinted 1968) by Robert Gunther, who died in 1940. As the bibliographical details on Archive.org mention, there doesn't seem to be a copyright notice - but that's probably not the whole story. Cheers, MinorProphet (talk) 20:25, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

MinorProphet, I imagine it is still in copyright. If it had been published in the US, it would enter the public domain in 2021 (96 years after first printing). But it appears to have been published in the UK, where things are done a bit differently. Why in particular do you need it to not be copyrighted? Captain Eek Edits Ho Cap'n! 20:49, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
MinorProphet, Hmmm looking into UK copyright law it might no longer be copyrighted, as it is extended 70 years after the author's death, which would have been 2010. Captain Eek Edits Ho Cap'n! 20:53, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@MinorProphet: Keep in mind, however, that if you are wanting to use the book or book contents in a way that would normally require permission from the copyright holder, it's up to you to contact the appropriate intellectual property legal counsel to make sure you aren't assuming too much regarding the possibility of it being outside of copyright. The advice given here is not legal advice. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 21:26, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your swift and helpful replies. I'm writing a draft article on the Lee Building, Christ Church, Oxford. I'm hoping to use some relatively lengthy paragraphs from the book, mostly in the Dr. Lee's Anatomy School and Lecture section. These currently have quotation marks with proper refs. Gunther has a very concise style which packs a load of info into a short space, and making a précis would not be particularly easy. (WP:LAZY doesn't apply here...) Obviously since it's on archive.org I can just point readers to the relevant pages without wholesale quoting, but I feel it would be more complete to have everything in the article if possible. I know the people on the Media Copyright desk are very much on the ball as regards pictures etc., but I'm not sure about printed material: they may be able to give some advice. Thanks for your timely assistance. MinorProphet (talk) 22:43, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
MinorProphet A work published in the US in 1925, with no copyright notice, would have been in the public domain at once, due to the lack of notice, under US law. However if the author (or at least one of multiple authors) was from the UK, or if the book was first published in the UK, and if the book was in copoyright under UK law as of 1 Janruary 1996, then under the Uruguay Round Agreements Act US copyright would have been restored, with the same term as if there had been a notice and renewal in proper form, even if UK copyright endes sooner. So such a book would not enter PD in the US until 2012.
But even if the book were clearly in the public domain everywhere (say it had been published in the US in 1880, and the author died in 1930) I question if relatively lengthy paragraphs should be used in a Wikipedia article. Wikipedia:Quotations#Overuse says: Long quotations crowd the actual article and remove attention from other information. Many direct quotations can be minimized in length by providing an appropriate context in the surrounding text. A summary or paraphrase of a quotation is often better where the original wording could be improved. and later Quotes shouldn't replace plain, concise text. Intersperse quotations with original prose that comments on those quotations instead of constructing articles out of quotations with little or no original prose. I haven't reviewed your draft, and obviously what is appropriate depends on the specific context. But please be aware that copyright is not the only issue here. DES (talk)DESiegel Contribs 14:51, 5 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
DESiegel, Thank you for your concise and pertinent reply. Having had another critical look at the relevant passages, I can see that large chunks of someone else's prose is not appropriate to a proper encyclopaedic style. I normally try to avoid this sort of thing. I'm a great fan of Gunther's work, but it's apparent to me now that acres of his stuff in a wiki article doesn't sit well - the difference between 'standard' wiki copy and a style of 90 years ago is fairly obvious and, indeed, obtrusive. I shall endeavour to give it a 'short back and sides'.
Thanks to everyone for your invaluable input and expert assistance, it is very encouraging to be reminded that top-quality constructive advice is available just for the asking. Now, on another matter, I represent company X, and would we like to know how to update our article with the latest advertising spam...... MinorProphet (talk) 17:03, 5 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

This may not be the old email I had originally so you can now change it if you choose …

Hello, Freddy. I guess this relates to the article Freddy Stephen Fuller? (It is always helpful if people identify which of our six million articles they are talking about). And that you are Freddy Fuller?
I presume that this is because of the notice that the article needs additional citations. Unfortunately, unpublished information, even directly from the subject, cannot be used in a Wikipedia article: what that notice is calling for is citations to reliably published sources.
As for the photo, Wikipedia does not work like that: there isn't a staff of people waiting for material sent in by email. Wikipedia is entirely edited by volunteers, who work on what they choose. Suitable photos of the subjects of articles are always welcome, but copyright makes this a bit difficult. If you have a photo of yourself which you hold the copyright for you may donate it to Wikimedia - but unless it was taken under a contract that says otherwise, the copyright probably belongs to the photographer and not you, in which case you do not have the power to donate it. But if you do, or if you can persuade the person who does, you or they are welcome to upload it, not to Wikipedia, but to Wikimedia Commons (from which it will be available to all Wikimedia projects; in particular all the different-language Wikipedias). But to do this, the copyright holder will be required to license it in a way that allows anybody to reuse it for any purpose, commercial or otherwise, as long as they attribute it. You or they may or may not be willing to do this. See WP:DCM.
If somebody does upload and license a photo, then anybody may add it to the article about you. But generally, you should avoid editing that article yourself, as you have a conflict of interest. You are welcome to suggest improvements on the article's talk page Talk:Freddy Stephen Fuller, though. --ColinFine (talk) 22:46, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
