August 30

edit

Please fix ref 46 which is in red - if you can. Sorry. Thanks Srbernadette (talk) 00:50, 30 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like User:Borerwaif fixed ref 46! The issue appears to be that the ISBN number that was used was not a ISBN and was just a "call number" (in fact as the book cited was published in 1958 it was before ISBN was introduced). However the book does have a Library of Congress Control Number (lccn), so that number was used. (Borerwaif, I was about to make the same edit, but you beat me to it! Thanks for the fix!   and also welcome to Wikipedia!). OkayKenji (talk page) 04:00, 30 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Creating a new page

edit

Hi and Shalom,

I searched for a definition entry which looks like it was not posted and was wonderring how to create new entries for definition pages not yet described or detailed? Thanks, Todah and Shalom — Preceding unsigned comment added by YahuvehAlephYud (talkcontribs) 03:56, 30 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@YahuvehAlephYud: Please have a look at Wikipedia:YFA. Note that articles should contain something more than the bare definition, as Wikipedia is not a dictionary. Victor Schmidt mobil (talk) 05:00, 30 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Although if you do want to write a dictionary, we do have Wiktionary, a free dictionary that anyone can edit. ~~ OxonAlex - talk 06:38, 30 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@YahuvehAlephYud: Please read WP:NOT first. Wikipedia is not a dictionary. If your article is only about the meaning of a word, then we do not want an article here. Instead, add it to Wiktionary, assuming it's a word that can already be found in other dictionaries. If it's a word you made up, don't put it there, either. If you think we need an article about the concept that the word represents (e.g., war, history), Then proceed to WP:YFA. The concept must be notable, or your article will be deleted. -Arch dude (talk) 14:37, 31 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

How Deleting Draft redirect

edit

Hi, I would like you delete the redirect Draft:Mystery Case Files: Ravenhearst Unlocked as it was a draft, I would like that the link will no more send to the main article please. Can you help me? Thank 207.35.95.187 (talk) 04:07, 30 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I've placed a deletion template on the redirect, asking for it to be deleted, under speedy deletion criteria WP:G7. ~~ OxonAlex - talk 05:38, 30 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Don't know if here is the place to ask this but I'm looking for an editor (or editors) who are very good at writing leads for articles. Myself and a few other editors are in the process of bringing this page up to FL standard and the only thing left is to redo/improve the lead. One of the editors had some good ideas & said she'd work on it but hasn't been active for a little while so things are currently at a standstill. I would greatly appreciate it if anyone more experienced in this area would be willing to work with me on it in the meantime. -- Carlobunnie (talk) 13:17, 30 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

When I look at NBFC & MFI in India I can see what is presumably intended to be a wikilink to Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934, but it doesn't work as a wikilink. Perhaps I'm being dim, but I can't see why the link isn't working; can someone explain it to me please? --David Biddulph (talk) 15:18, 30 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Trappist the monk fixed it, David --ColinFine (talk) 17:19, 30 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use of public channel content

edit

Dear community, I didn't understand how can I post an image from a public state channel, which allows the user of it's content. my contribution File:Qaher-1_Missile_lunch.jpg is going to be deleted because it's said I need to give proper copy rights claims.

what is the proper way to use public channels content in Wikipedia? 967Bytes (Contact) 16:08, 30 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

What makes you think that the Saba News Agency does not still hold the copyright? There is no proper way to use a copyright image when a free image might be available. Have you some reason to believe that copyright has been released? Dbfirs 16:41, 30 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Did you not notice that the webpage from which you copied the image has "All rights reserved" and "Copyright 2019" at the bottom? Dbfirs 15:52, 31 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Dbfirs: Nope, not a single copy right notice in their website which I wrote an article about almasirah(you can visit their website and scroll down to the bottom) or in their satellite channel, and they won't use do any copyrights claim because their goal isn't profit, they are trying to "spread awareness about war in Yemen" and other similar goals.

- The image is going to be deleted in less than a day, but it says that I shouldn't remove the image removal template, how can I extend the image removal period for few more days?

967Bytes (Contact) 18:12, 31 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

You said you got the image from here, where there is a copyright notice, though it might be only for the website design. In general, images on the internet are assumed to be copyright unless you can prove otherwise. Dbfirs 19:43, 31 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Dbfirs: ooh I pointed out to that website which it originally got it from almasirah tv channel, my bad, I will fix that by changing the source of the image to almasirah. plus what do you mean by "unless you can prove otherwise", do you mean like take the picture by myself or like contact almasirah? well, it's possible to contact them it will take ages plus I would like to stay anonymous for safety reasons.

but lets say that I contacted them, how can I prove that I have the permission to use the pictures? (please do ping me so that I receive a notification) 967Bytes (Contact) 00:58, 1 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

This is the houthi war media (الإعلام الحربي) page with all the videos of in it, how can I prove that I can get images from there and use them. 967Bytes (Contact) 01:20, 1 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@967Bytes:You have made the common mistake of thinking that an image is not copyrighted if there is not copyright notice. Not true: anything that is published has a copyright by default, by law. We did not make up this law, but we do adhere to it. We need the image to be explicitly released under a license by the copyright holder. Some web sites do have such a license on their web sites. Most news agencies to not. Thus, we must assume that this image is copyrighted and we cannot put it on Commons. Permission from the copyright holder to you is insufficient. We would need permission from the copyright holder to Wikipedia. (Fair use is different, see below). -Arch dude (talk) 02:59, 1 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@967Bytes: The English Wikipedia, but not Commons, permits the highly restricted use of images under "fair use". See Wikipedia:Non-free content. If you wish to try to claim "fair use", then permission from the copyright holder is neither required or desired, so do not mix up your "copyright" argument with your "fair use" argument. However, you must meet ALL of the fair use requirements. -Arch dude (talk) 02:59, 1 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Arch dude:@Dbfirs: Thank you so much, now it's more clear. I will import the image in Wikipedia English and use the fair use rules, as for the Wikipedia commons, I will try to get the permission and put it there. 967Bytes (Contact) 17:59, 1 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Template message

edit

Is there a template message for Gammear errors? Meow! Off to wikiLink! (talk) 17:22, 30 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The full list of user template messages is here - Wikipedia:Template messages/User talk namespace. There isn't one for grammar, but it might just fit under MOS. If the language is really bad, and you know another language spoke by the user, you could direct them to their language wikipedia using Foreign-language contributors templates - but this should only be done if the English is bad enough to be of absolutely no use.
~~ OxonAlex - talk 17:38, 30 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Also, unrelated to your question, but it may be advisable to read the section of the MOS concerning links - MOS:LINK ~~ OxonAlex - talk 17:40, 30 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Try {{cleanup}} with |reason=grammar needs correction (or similar reason). Or fix it yourself.   See also: WP:Template messages/Cleanup 2606:A000:1126:28D:CCDA:C67B:CAA0:3ED2 (talk) 18:03, 30 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Aligning userboxes

edit

Hello, how do I align a userbox so it appears in a particular position on my user page, such as on the right side of the page? I'd like to line them up so they appear either above or beneath the infobox. Cheers in advance, This is Paul (talk) 18:22, 30 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

If you would like them to appear within the infobox, you can put "userboxes" as a parameter in the infobox, like this:
{{Infobox Wikipedia user | userboxes = {{user en}} }}
Or you can do:

{{Userboxtop|El cid}} {{user en}}

Hope this helps! ‡ Єl Cid of ᐺalencia ᐐT₳LKᐬ 18:45, 30 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
That's great, I've just updated it. Cheers again, This is Paul (talk) 20:40, 30 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

lost edits

edit

As of today, I have a user page, but I was notified that I have done only one edit. However, I have submitted edits for three articles, not just one. Are my first two edits, before I created my user page, lost? I created a password and jumped through some initial hoops, but I wasn't aware of the necessity of having a user page. Margaret Halbeisen (talk) 20:11, 30 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Having a user page is not a requirement. Some editors make many edits over years without a user page. Your contributions show only two edits, on your user page and here at the help desk, so no clue what happened to your other edits. What articles did you edit? Mikenorton (talk) 20:26, 30 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Margaret Halbeisen, Your edits are not lost, but attributed to the Internet Provider Address(es) that you were using at the time. You need a user account to attribute your edits to your name (or pseudonym). TSventon (talk) 20:28, 30 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
If you were logged in at the time then the edits were not saved. If you were not logged in then the edits are attributed to your IP address if they were saved. It doesn't matter whether your account has a user page. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:06, 30 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

krak des chevaliers

edit

All of this article is fabricated and elicits history distortion as it does threatens the identity of the Castle, the region and the people. Please remove this content at once: krak des chevaliers check for factual information on : https://www.britannica.com/topic/Krak-des-Chevaliers https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/1229/ — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:908:1E4:70C0:9004:BFE3:E8BA:5F8B (talk) 20:40, 30 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, IP user. If you think there is something wrong with the article Krak des Chevaliers, please discuss this on the talk page Talk:Krak des Chevaliers. You are much more likely to get a profitable discussion if you say specifically what you think should be changed rather than a blanket "this is all wrong". --ColinFine (talk) 22:47, 30 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

It obfuscates history, threatens it along with the culture and people of this region. Cycling team templates

edit

Hi there. On Hugh Carthy, in the infobox, there is his current team as Cannondale-Drapac. Although it links to EF Education First, it still displays as Cannondale-Drappac. The template needs to be updated as the wikimarkup is {{ct|EFD|2017}} indicating it has been updated but not the display name. I most likely am making little sense, but if someone could offer me any help, it would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Willbb234Talk (please {{ping}} me in replies) 21:36, 30 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Update: Tejay van Garderen has EF Education First as his team in the infobox. I think it might be to do with the fact that it only updates if the input is 2018 or later as this is when Cannondale-Drapac became EF Education First? 2019 American League Division Series And National League Division Series

edit

What No Articles For American League Division Series and National League Division Series. 68.103.78.155 (talk) 23:38, 30 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

You may use the wizard at WP:YFA to create a draft article for review. Or you may request someone else to write the article at WP:RA. RudolfRed (talk) 01:13, 31 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I Already used the wizard to create both articles. 68.103.78.155 (talk) 02:26, 31 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

So there are existing drafts then? Are they awaiting review? There are over 4,500 drafts in that situation and it can take up to 2 months (or more). Eagleash (talk) 04:52, 31 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, there are drafts, though these are so uncontroversial, they could have been added to mainspace directly. I'm going to approve them both, even though obviously there isn't much info as of yet. Clarityfiend (talk) 08:15, 31 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
The OP / IP couldn't do that himself though. The trademark "What no article etc." question was also a bit misleading. (Though not abusive on this occasion). Eagleash (talk) 08:57, 31 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
