Biased article

edit

I have detected a biased article here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CEX.IO_Bitcoin_Exchange The article contains doubtful information that isn't proved by factual data. I have already tried to undo the edits but the user reverts them back.Wikiwarriorangel (talk) 10:31, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Wikiwarriorangel: I have restored the page to the last good version (AFAICT) before all the edit-warring. I have also left a welcome / warning at the other editor's talk page. Please do not continue to 'back and forth' with edits at the page. This is known as edit warring and can lead to loss of privileges irrespective of the merits of the edits. Try to engage with the other editor per WP:BRD to reach an agreement. Thank you. Eagleash (talk) 10:51, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

You haven't actually asked a question, but if this is related to your two drafts, Draft:Al Imran ft and User:Alimranft6466/sandbox, neither of them stands any chance of being accepted by a reviewer because neither has any references to satisfy the requirement for verifiability or to demonstrate notability. Also, neither is written in coherent English, so you may be better off editing in a Wikipedia in your native language. --David Biddulph (talk) 15:37, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Page: "Larry Warren (Rendlesham)"

edit

Dear Wikipedia. I am trying to access this page. It used to be there, but whenever I do now I am redirected to another page, this one: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rendlesham_Forest_incident Why is this? Best wishes Ben — Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.139.70.236 (talk) 15:06, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, the page was nominated for deletion and subsequently re-directed to Rendlesham Forest incident as a result of the discussion which you can read at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Larry Warren (Rendlesham). Please sign your posts at talk pages by typing four tildes (~~~~). Thank you. Eagleash (talk) 15:20, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
In what way was Larry Warren (Rendlesham) relevant to Rendlesham Forest incident? The latter includes no mention of the word "Warren". If you don't know, perhaps an admin who can see the deleted page can answer? --David Biddulph (talk) 15:31, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
it's not entirely clear how he is (or was) relevant. Old versions of the Larry Warren (Rendlesham) talk page indicate that he was seen in the area at the time of the incident and was possibly a witness, but that information was sketchy at best, lacked notability and was poorly sourced. I've never seen the page before, I just searched, found the redirect and then the AfD. Eagleash (talk) 15:55, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Using harvnb

edit

I just tried to add a citation to Conic section, which uses the harvnb template. I tried to enter the reference itself and the inline citation the way it looks like other entries are done, but I can’t get it to click down to the bibliography. What am I doing wrong? Update Commanders name

edit

Hello, I am looking to update the current leadership team information on our wiki page.

Calgary Highlanders

new Commanding Officer is Lieutenant-Colonel Simon J. Cox, CD

how do I do this?

Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Calgaryhighlander (talkcontribs) 17:23, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Calgaryhighlander. Thank you for asking here, rather than just going ahead and making the change. Normally, anybody may improve a Wikipedia article, but because of your conflict of interest you are strongly discouraged from editing the page directly. (By the way, it is not your page: it is Wikipedia's page about you). You should post a request on the talk page Talk:The Calgary Highlanders, requesting the change, and preferably pointing to a reliable published source for the information. You may add the template {{edit request}} (including the double curly brackets) to bring the request to more people's notice.
On another subject, I suspect that your user name is not acceptable, as usernames that imply that the account directly represents an organisation are forbidden; but this is not as clearcut as some cases, so others may not agree with me. I suggest that to avoid the possibility of problems that you change it: please see WP:CHU. --ColinFine (talk) 22:44, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Help:Cite errors/Cite error references missing key

edit

This refers to article I just edited, titled "Daughter of Dr. Jekyll." I got 2 messages: (1) Cite error: A list-defined reference called "Weaver2000" is not used in the content (2) Cite error: A list-defined reference called "Rhodes2008" is not used in the content." I looked at the Help Page but instructions are not for Visual Editor, so I have no idea what to do. If it helps, error (1) is the result of me deleting a reference that cited books.google as the source and using the book itself and (2) is the result of me deleting an incorrect reference, also from books.google, and replacing it with a correct reference. — Preceding unsigned comment added by James P. Van Dyke (talkcontribs) 04:53, October 24, 2017 (UTC)

James P. Van Dyke: late answer I know, and it's been fixed now, but the quick answer is that unlike most Wikipedia articles, the references in The Daughter of Dr. Jekyll are defined in the reflist rather than in the body of the text where they appear, hence "list-defined references". That means that when you remove a reference, you also need to remove it in the reflist itself. In the visual editor, just click on the list, and click edit like you would for any other template. Also, remember to add ~~~~ after a post to sign it. Regards, Dairy {talk} 23:46, 24 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

How to get an article published

edit

I was approached by a contributor who offered to publish a Wikipedia article about my business. Is this allowed under your terms of service? While I'd like an article published, I don't want to pay for something if it's just going to be taken down after it's put up. Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.190.246.179 (talk) 17:56, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Very wise to question this . A paid editor can often get an article published – take the money and run before it the article gets deleted. Out of interest, how much was he asking. The going price appears to be about $270 and upwards. As a rule of thumb – if your business is 'notable' it will already have and article free of charge, if it is not it will be deleted. Who was this editor? He may have good credentials. Then we can advise further. Aspro (talk) 18:52, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
270 USD, wow, that seems like a lot. Where did you hear this, and where can I sign up, lol? Benjamin (talk) 21:34, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Didn't hear it but read it on websites that offer to create WP articles in return for $$$. Why do you ask. Are you hungering for thirty pieces of silver ? Aspro (talk) 21:47, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Of course I would never do something so unethical! Probably. But mainly, I am just curious. I've heard of paid editing, but never actually seen it firsthand. Also, it doesn't seem like it would take that long to create an article, considering that amount of money. Benjamin (talk) 21:50, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
No, but if the subject does not happen to be notable, then it is literally impossible to write an article on it which will be accepted, so an editor who takes the money to do so is either incompetent to perform the task, or fraudulent. --ColinFine (talk) 22:47, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
If one is a freelancer and hopes to pay the bills at the end of the month, then one has to value ones time at more than $20 per hour. I can create an article quickly too. But it does not end there. Before I can get payment I will have to defend it from editors that view 'new articles' and demand better citations etc. That can take up hours. Many new 'paid editors' appear to based now in India were just $20 per week is considered a good wage. One can't in the Western civilized World make a living by creating articles for non notable entities and hope to get away with it. The OP has smelt a rat. Because if it seem too good to be true – it probably is not true. Which is why, I would like to know who this prospective article creator is. The OP should not consider this as disclosing business confidentiality's but rather as alerting others to fraudulent activities. Aspro (talk) 13:05, 24 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Incidentally: It's just possible that your business really does meet our notability criteria. Please carefully read WP:NOTABILITY to see. If you are notable, and you have been described and/or discussed in two or more places that we consider reliable sources, then come back here and ask what to do next. Sorry, you cannot directly contribute an article yourself (see WP:COI) but we can probably find a way to proceed. And thanks for checking with us. Almost nobody takes this perfectly reasonable step. -Arch dude (talk) 01:52, 24 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Template and contents table

edit

The contents table is not showing in articles where the Arab culture template is in. It is somehow in the "more" collapsible list of the template. What is the problem? e.g. Arab dance and Arab culture.

I removed the '=' tags from the template, it seems this solved it. Tarook97 (talk) 18:58, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, [1] fixed it. ==...== creates a section heading and the table of contents is by default placed right before the first section heading in the page. PrimeHunter (talk) 19:04, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
edit

Hi, on the page for the Italian language I just found a link that was once a useful site but is now a porn advertising hub in German or somesuch (warning, NSFW: http://www.italofonia.org). I already removed it from that page obviously, what I wanted to know was whether there's some sort of tool or add-on that allows you to search other pages on wikipedia and sister projects that link to the same website? For instance in Wp:It we have this page: https://it.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?target=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.italofonia.org&title=Speciale%3ACercaCollegamenti with the site I just mentioned as an example. Thanks! cheers, --Amendola90 (talk) 19:40, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Sahid Ansari(Bhai). What is your question regarding editing Wikipedia? If the question is, how do I write an autobiography on Wikipedia, the answer is, You don't. Wikipedia articles are accepted only about subjects which are notable - that means that several people with no connection to the subject have chosen to write about them and been published in a reliable source. There could not be a Wikipedia article about me, because I do not meet that criterion; and from what you say above, you do not meet it either.
You are permitted to share a little information about yourself on your user page, but it must not look like an article, and should be mostly about you as a Wikipedia editor. --ColinFine (talk) 22:57, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Essay

edit

Is there an essay along the lines of "The plural of anecdota is not data."? I did an advanced search of the Wikipedia namespace, but there are too many results. Is there a way to search just the essays? Benjamin (talk) 21:32, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

incategory:"Wikipedia essays" will only produce results from Category:Wikipedia essays, but essays will not be included when they are only in subcategories. hastemplate:essay will only produce pages which translcude {{essay}}, but some essays transclude other essay templates. There are many essays in userspace so include that in searches. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:44, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I tried that and got no results. Am I doing something wrong? I just added hastemplate:essay to the search term. Benjamin (talk) 21:53, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I get 279 results on data hastemplate:essay. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:01, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Huh, there seems to be no such essay, which seems surprising, considering how common of an idea it is, and how often it is otherwise mentioned in Wikipedia discussions. Benjamin (talk) 22:08, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

duplicate reference parameters

edit

I have been noticing articles that have errors in the reference section like 'Unknown parameter |DUPLICATE_publisher= ignored' (or DUPLICATE_title, etc.). An example is The Wealdstone Raider where the youTube is listed as a duplicate publisher in several references (youTube is not always the culprit). Are these parameters being put in by editors or by software like Citoid? Should they be ignored or removed to get rid of the red error messages? Leschnei (talk) 22:49, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Citation bot did it in [2] because there were two |publisher = ...|publisher = .... This causes the first value to be ignored. Ideally you should look for the best value, and consider whether the other value should be used in another way, e.g. |website = YouTube. See Help:Duplicate parameters. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:14, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
PrimeHunter That makes sense - thanks. Leschnei (talk) 23:28, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
