Wikipedia logging me out edit

I have tried different methods to keep Wikipedia from logging me out on chrome as every time it does it crashes the browser. Is there anyway to keep Wikipedia from logging me out a couple of times a day?Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 04:00, 16 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You may be focusing on the wrong issues. Are you having the same problems logging out of other sites? I found several posts by other Chrome users who are also having issues with crashing on logoff (not just on Wikipedia). It seems to be related to Chrome's built-in Flash plugin conflicting with a manually installed Flash plugin. Here's a page detailing how to disable the built-in one. You might also simply try downloading the latest version of Chrome as it seems to have fixed the issue(?).-- Obsidin Soul 20:08, 17 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

External links edit

I was recently editing a page, and put a link to facebook (this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Styn) my whole edit was taken down by the bot. I undid it and took out the fb link, as that was the only thing listed. Is the rest of it fine? I was looking over the page of another favorite author, and saw that they had a link to a facebook fan page. Inserting Umlaut and Accent symbols edit

When editing, click on "Special characters" which is just above the edit window. You can select accented characters from there. Alternatively, you can configure your computer to allow you to type them directly. For example, on my Windows 7 PC I can press ALT-CTRL-e to get é and, with the 'language bar' enabled and Japanese installed, I can switch to hiragana and type だいじょうぶ. Hmm, I get €. But I have my keyboard set to US International. Typing accents is then automated, e.g. type an accent sign, then the letter will produce the right character. For example, typing ' then e gives é, and typing " then o gives ö. Edokter (talk) — 12:11, 16 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
(e/c) You can access numerous characters like this by going to the drop down menu below the save page button when you are in edit mode. See the Latin menu especially. We also have article on many characters (e.g., É, Ě, Ë) and you could bookmark the category they are in, Category:Specific letter-diacritic combinations which contains many. Maybe better, try Category:Writing system templates which contains for example {{Latin alphabet}} and {{Diacritical marks}}. These can also be placed by looking up their HTML codes. The method I use is to learn the ALT codes. To use these, you hold down the ALT button, type the number with the numeric keyboard and then release the ALT button, and the desired letter appears. ALT+0252 gives ü, ALT + 0223 gives ß, ALT + 0246 gives ö, etc. Mjroots (talk) 19:49, 16 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If you have Windows, you can also go the Character Map program. Click the square that displays the character that you want to type, and then hit the "select" button. Next, click the "copy" button, and this will put the character into your clipboard; selecting the "Paste" command or typing "V" while holding down the Control key will paste it into your page. As well, if you want to do like Mjroots and I do with the ALT+ method, go to Character Map and select a character; if it can be typed this way, the program will have a message saying something like "Keystroke: Alt+____", where the + sign is followed by the numbers you need to type while holding down Alt. I figured out that you don't mean the article Moonshine, you mean the article Moonshine by country.
The problem was, you'd inserted a <ref> with no corresponding </ref> at the end of it.
References should be placed directly after facts, within the main body-text. The system automatically lists them as numbered references. For example,

Chzz is 98 years old.<ref> "The book of Chzz", Aardvark Books, 2009. </ref>

See WP:REFB for help with that.

I edited a page that was two years out of date, but even though I saved the changes, the page is still the same.

The page in question is a society within a university and changes regularly, how can I update the page?

Simple... A quick look at the edit history here shows that the XLinkBot robot reverted your edits because it detected that you added a link to a Facebook profile. Because you created your advertisement in a user page rather than as an article. Your user page has now been tagged for speedy deletion as spam and your user name blocked as a breach of the user name policy. Labelling minors as drug addicts in Wikipedia Page edit

Hi Wikipedia Help Desk,

Reference: Vikram Varma profile page. (Advocate in Goa, India)

Problem: User Reptozoid logged on to Wikipedia for the first time (Reptozoid has not created / edited anything in Wikipedia before) and created a very biased, libellous page for Advocate Vikram Varma who lives in Goa, India. You can see the very first page he created and contrast it with current page to see his biases.

Today (Dec 16, 2011), Reptozoid logged on to Vikram Varma page and left the following comment

" Fiona MacKeown and her children were recognized as regular drug users during the period of Scarlett's death and was reproached child neglect by the authorities.[4] MacKeown sold TV rights of the aftermath of Scarlett Keeling to Channel 4 U.K. for a sum of 15000 pounds.[5] "

- Who has a right to call any children drug users on a public Wikipedia page? All these children are still minors

- Also, why should any specific clients of any lawyer be discussed on any Wikipedia page?


Please also check if Reptozoid is using a Proxy Server to leave such negative comments


Please could someone fix this asap as calling children drug addicts is not only libellous, it is very immoral

You should discuss article contents on the article talk pages. Removing reliably cited information with no explanation is discouraged. (I would suggest that much of the material belongs in a possible article about the murder and not the the article about the lawyer, though.) Rmhermen (talk) 18:04, 16 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Receive email when article in watchlist is edited or vandalized edit

Hello to the Wikipedia: Help desk; I've been creating articles which may be susceptible to vandalism, prompting my curiosity regarding the following:

Is there a feature or an external source which will send me an email when one of the articles in my watchlist is edited?

Such a feature would allow me to more effectively monitor for vandalism.

There is a feature that will email you each time someone leaves you a notice on your user talk page that one of your articles or files is up for deletion. I haven't read the book, so perhaps I'm missing something, but why should this be an article? Conceptually, one could grab any one of millions of books, and make a list of all locations, or dates. I don't see much value. It is not uncommon to make a list of characters, but that seems quite different.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 16:46, 17 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thanks for the feedback SPhilbrick. The book is just a list of placenames, each with a humorous "definition". There are no characters (or plot), so to my mind the placenames themselves are of note in as much as the book itself is of note. Interestingly, the Wikipedia entries for some of the placenames I've already entered (e.g. Abercrave) include the Liff definition. I suggest you don't create a category, as I can't imagine anyone wanting to use this book's entries as their guide for navigating the encyclopedia. Also I don't think that the "definitions" should be added to the placename articles unless, for a particular case, you can find a reliable source that has remarked on it.
I think that a more worthwhile effort would be to improve the book article, The Meaning of Liff, since there's very little there to show that the book is notable - the guideline is at Wikipedia:Notability (books). -- John of Reading (talk) 08:36, 21 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
