Article(s): Water heating

Request: Active Solar Water Heater Diagram.svg is the basis for new image; the solar panel needs to be cut off in a new image; eg called Water heating system.svg (keep the active solar water heater digram in place) and it should be stated that the 2 pipes connect to a external (passive) source; eg a ground, water solar or air source; eg via heat pump, deep surface water (see also: Image:Heat pump system.jpg) or solar panel (see image above) KVDP (talk) 09:44, 18 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s):   Request taken by slashme.: Should be easy. --Slashme (talk) 16:57, 24 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I've taken a look at it, and now I have a few questions:
  • How exactly is the circuit to the water heater tied in? Shouldn't the water heater be taking partially heated water from the solar or other system, heating it to the required temperature, and feeding the appliances?
Indeed, the image is solar water heater diagram is drawn like this aswell. The only modification to the image would be that you draw 3 systems; namely a solar collector, and 3 heat pumps (air, soil and groundwater; see the heat pump system image). Perhaps the 3 devices and pipes are best colored in green so as to make it more clear that only one of the three is used; not all together. The text should make this clear too; mark all devices with the number 1 (like in the solar water heater diagram)
Yes, but I think this image is wrong: the appliances should get their hot water from the water heater, not the warm water tank. The solar heater or heat pump warms the cold water to a warm temperature. this water then goes to the water heater, and then to the appliances. In this image, the appliances get their water from the warm water tank, which is clearly wrong. --Slashme (talk) 15:35, 25 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
No, that's right, the tank here is for hot water storage; however the illustration here is too complex and confusing. The basic idea of an active solar water heater is to pump heated liquid through a heat exchanger (coil) based low in the hot water tank via a collector unit on the roof; that's all there is to it. There are several variations on this, including pumping the tank water itself to the roof (no heat exchanger); use of an electrical element in the upper part of the tank; having auxiliary heat sources (eg central heating) run a supplementary heat exchanger higher in the tank (I guess that's the illustration we have here); and on-demand supplementary heating of drawn-off tank water (the way you're describing it above). There are probably others, but they're all active, pumped systems. I'd stick to that basic configuration, maybe leaving room in the diagram for variations. --mikaultalk 21:07, 25 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I don't understand: if you want hot water at 50°C from the tap, that's what the temperature of your hot water cylinder has to be. If you put 50°C water through a roof panel, you're surely just heating up your roof! What am I missing? --Slashme (talk) 11:53, 8 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
In the example shown above, hot water isn't pumped to the roof, it's a coolant-based liquid that is heated on the roof which exchanges its heat at the coil. As an aside, in the basic active system without a coil / heat exchanger, the system needs to be configured to only pump the actual hot water to the roof when water temp is cooler than the roof collector temp. I once saw a very basic version of this that had a pump manually switched on when the sun was out; like I said, there are many variations. Anyway... I think what you're missing is the convective action in the cyclinder: a typical system has a coil low in the tank, where the water is coolest, while an electric element mounted high in the tank "tops up" the water temp before it's drawn off above that. Any decent system will switch off the roof circuit pump at night, for example. Does that clarify things? --mikaultalk 21:48, 8 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It still seems wrong: You're drawing water from the municipal supply at (for example) 15 °C. Putting that through a solar heating system before letting it into the heating cylinder is a big win. Say it gets in at the roof temperature of, for example, 45 °C, and it now only has to be heated about 5 °C before it's warm enough to go out the tap. On the other hand, putting cool municipal water directly into a heating cylinder and then trying to do solar heating in the cylinder seems really strange! If you have a warm coil at the bottom of the cylinder where the cold water comes in, you'll set up a strong convection current which will tend to mix the water in the cylinder, so I don't see how the idea of relying on a temperature gradient in the cylinder holds water (if you'll excuse the pun). Usually, we have a principle that illustrations have less stringent citation standards than text, but I'd really like to see a reliable source that shows that it is normal to pump coolant from a roof through a hot water cylinder. I could believe a heat pump working between a roof and a hot water cylinder, though. --Slashme (talk) 08:12, 17 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Seeing as we have a municipal water inlet shown, shouldn't the water outlets from the appliances also be shown going to drain?
For the drain, I personally wouldn't show it in the image. You may offcourse, but then the drain would in the end need to run to a purifier; this as the runoff water can be contaminated (depending on whether or not chemical soaps, ... are used). With autonomous systems this purifier would be based near the house and not somewhere else; with the drain ending in the "sewers". The complication thus is that it can be run to the sewers, to a domestic purifier (eg reed bed, sand or other filters, ...) or simply to the back garden (if no chemical soaps, ... are used).
OK, then I'll just draw a "warm waste" pipe leaving the house, and not show where it goes. This will at least allow one to see all the inputs and outputs from the house. --Slashme (talk) 15:35, 25 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Personally, I wouldn't, it's just not relevant to the supply and distribution of the water. There's no electricity supply pictured either, just as integral a part as waste water. Too much info; keep it simple. --mikaultalk 21:07, 25 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Article(s): any related to American football, e.g. Cleveland Browns

Request: Vectorize! ;) What I am looking for is a detailed, technical illustration of a blank American football helmet (no logos or anything). It would be nice if the helmet elements (faceplate, helmet) were grouped and selectable so that users could change their fill colors, and add logos and such to represent the various NFL/college/etc teams. (no need for a chin strap or any fancy details) You don't have to use those two images, but I suggested them because the photos are PD (not sure about the industrial design/logo design) More images can be found at commons:Category:American football helmets. File:Navy football helmet.jpg is nearly perfect, except that I am almost positive this is a copyvio, and the underlying helmet illustration (which I've seen on other websites like NFL.com) is copyrighted. This would replace File:Cleveland Browns helmet rightface.png, which is up for FFD, and such a blank helmet illustration surely would come in handy for countless other articles. Due to how this base image is going to be modified and used frequently, it may be nice if the graphist considered licensing the work PD as well.Andrew c [talk] 22:39, 15 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Globes with new parallells and meridians

  Stale
 – DyceBot (talk) 07:02, 15 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Article(s): Earth, Circle of latitude, Meridians article.

Request:

From the image above, 2 new images need to be made, with each image having 2 globes drawn on them. The first globe of each image would need to be a globe with lines running towards 2 central points (these central points being the north and south pole) for the circles of latitude and the central point for the circles of longtitude being a point in the exact middle of the globe (at 0°N 0°E, or just below Accra (Ghana))

The 2 images (both with 2 globes) would need to differ from each other in the fact the the "top" of the second one would be offset to the left (meaning instead of the north pole the area more left towards the 70° parallell become the top) This will mean that both the meridians as their "alternative circles of longtitude (not sure whether what I'm proposing already has a name)" would need to be changed aswell.

I'm not sure how exactly the drawings can be made, but I'm guessing that with Google Sketchup, the making of the globe (which can be made from a simple orb with values as indicated at the earth page; eg 40,075.02 km (equatorial), 40,007.86 km (meridional) ) can be done easily. Using the same tool, a skin may be applied which should simply be a map of the earth; showing the land masses, then, the required lines can be made unto the orb. For the second image then, the axial tilt (23.439281°) can be added, and the lines redrawn. After this, the file can be exported to an image or something else (3D cinematic ?) See Talk:Earth/Archive_10#Meridians_and_parallells for the initial discussion.

The image would be very important as the meridians and parallells are used frequently and worldwide by anyone. Though I'm not sure, I'm guessing that this new system may allow easier navigation (eg regarding determination of magnetic variation with compasses)

The png is a huge improvement to the svg (autotraced svgs are pointless for these types of images). Some details are missing/wrong in the png though. Firstly the yellow circle around the grey area is actually part of the surrounding ribbon and should be curved with it. Secondly the back f the ribbon should be coloured rather then grey (left and right of the image). /94.193.242.248 (talk) 01:46, 18 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I think it was meant to show the flow of air around low and high pressure areas. If it helps, here is an explanation of what is happening in the image:
When anyone borrows money, they are assigned a credit rating, largely dependent on their ability to pay it back. There are a number of credit rating agencies, the two best known are S&P and Moody's. S&P credit ratings range from AAA to "unrated", while Moody's highest rating is Aaa. So the letters in the middle represent the S&P and Moody's rating symbols.
A homeowner buying a mortgage has a Rating of "B" (same for S&P and Moody's). While B was a decent grade in school, it isn't very high on the credit scale. What happens is that a large number of B rated mortgages are combined into a pool. The payment streams are then divided up into what are called "tranches". This process creates a number of securities, with varying credit ratings. The interesting thing is that one can create a AAA rated security from B rated mortgages. The arrows on the right indicate the following information about each of the tranches - if there are losses, the losses first accrue to the unrated tranche, then to the B tranche etc. in order up the list. The credit risk for the top tranche is the lowest, and credit risk increases as you move down the tranches. The expected yield is lowest on the top tranche and increases as you move down the list.

Request: Please vectorise. Connormah (talk) 15:31, 19 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s):

  Request taken by Svgalbertian.   Done

Why? The image is fairly high resolution for a logo as it is. It's only use is a thumbnail in an infobox. Since this image is from an official source, and I don't see the point in creating a "bootleg" SVG, it isn't clear to me how an SVG would benefit in this situation. Perhaps we could search from an official source for an official vector version of the logo instead? -Andrew c [talk] 15:16, 25 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
This PDF has a vector version of the logo, however cause "Calgary Airport Authority" is still text, and I don't have that proper font installed it messes up the spacing when I open it in Illustrator. --Svgalbertian (talk) 18:44, 25 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The font is 'Arrival', from a partner of Village. Connormah (talk) 15:59, 26 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Using PDF2SVG I was able to convert the file without having to install the font. --Svgalbertian (talk) 04:19, 11 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s):

are you wanting NEW icons that look like those, or what exactly is the request? — raeky (talk | edits) 17:03, 2 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, a new icon similar to those above. Headbomb {ταλκκοντριβς – WP Physics} 17:10, 2 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Found some book icons on Commons. Added them below (please add any others you find) should make it easier to find/discuss a basis for a new image. Commons:Category:Book icons should contain even more icons. /Lokal_Profil 17:02, 3 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Personally, I don't really have an opinion on which would be best. Take the one which'll be easier for you, or which you like best. Headbomb {ταλκκοντριβς – WP Physics} 18:07, 9 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Be careful about using #2 as it is licensed LGPL, which is a software license, not an image license, thus you could have trouble legally using derivatives in certain situations. Kaldari (talk) 19:17, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
5 might be the easiest to recognise for such a small image. /Lokal_Profil 23:49, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I threw together File:Symbol book class.svg and File:Symbol book class2.svg. Whilst I preferr the left most one it might be that the other one is easier to distinguish at low resolutions. The colours are only temporary of course. Anyhow feedback is welcome. /Lokal_Profil 15:09, 15 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
On these colors the 2nd one looks more recognizable at low-res, but that's possibly due to contrast. The book class color is #98FF98, so perhaps make the middle of the icon match that. The lighter shade of green should offer more contrast. Or perhaps make the book-icon itself darker? Headbomb {ταλκκοντριβς – WP Physics} 01:37, 16 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I changed the interior colour but this resulted in a weird colour clash so I changed the surrounding one as well. The different 16px versions can be seen through the links: left 1, 2 3 | right 1 2 3./Lokal_Profil 23:52, 16 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I think 3 looks the best of them at low res. I'll upload that one, and if someone disagrees, then then can change it. Thanks a bunch!Headbomb {ταλκκοντριβς – WP Physics} 01:01, 17 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Why? Non-free content really isn't the focus or mission of Wikipedia, and it's almost always better to use content sourced from an official source, as opposed to sloppy, reconstructed traces. We normally need a good rationale for non-free work. Please also see the same thing a few topics up, Wikipedia:Graphic_Lab/Illustration_workshop#Flag_of_Denton_County. I wonder who at FAC is sending non-free images here. -Andrew c [talk] 16:37, 16 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
    •   DoneOK, I located, a PDF on the official webpage that had the logo in it, so I extracted it, and saved it as SVG. This is not an SVG conversion, rather it was simply finding the logo on the official website in vector format, and saving it in a format compatible with Wikipedia. See File:Seattle Sounders FC.svg. -Andrew c [talk] 17:39, 16 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
