Detailed image upload and usage instructions

Below are detailed instructions on how to download an image from CoS Archives, upload it to Wikimedia Commons and then add it to a Wikipedia article.

Open Wikipedia and log in to your account.

Open the Project page: City of Sydney Picture This

Go to the section, Photographs for practice

Make your selection from the people, parks, suburbs or buildings and then click the VE Friendly button to edit using Visual Editor. Next add your username in the Editor column to claim it.

Click on the image link to access the image on the CoS Archives website and open it in another tab. Verify the copyright of the image. Click on the download icon and select Download the Original, which is the hi-res version. When you download the image to your computer, make sure you know where to find it.

Open Wikimedia Commons in a different tab and check that you are logged in.

Click on the blue Upload button. This will open the Upload Wizard.

1. Learn:

Read the infographic about uploading images.

2. Upload:

Click on the "Select media files to share" button or drag and drop the downloaded image file as requested.

Click "Continue".

3. Release rights:

Click "This file is not my own work" and fields will appear for you to complete.

To fill in "Source", go to the CoS Archives page from which you downloaded the image and copy the URL, then paste it into Source.

In "Author" check the image’s page in the CoS Archives for any information about who took the image and add that info. If none is given, add "Unknown".

Select the relevant Creative Commons licence. Many of the CoS Archives are labelled "CC-BY 4.0", which on the list is called "Creative Commons Attribution 4.0". If no CC:BY is given and the image file says it is out of copyright, or was taken before 1955, you can use the "Another reason not mentioned above" and add {{PD-Australia}} to the text box.

Then click "Next".

4. Describe:

In the "Image title" rename the image to the person’s full name and its Unique ID from CoS Archives. Please leave a space between words.

"Caption" may be the same as the title, but include the year the image was taken, if it is available.

"Description"

Add a full the description AND add "Unique ID [and the number] " from the CoS image page.

"Date work was created or first published"

Add the date the image was taken/published in the format YYYY-MM-DD or click the Pencil icon and add the year or range or c. year (circa)

"Categories"

Add: Images from the City of Sydney Archives

Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click "Publish files"

5. Add data

Skip this step and Publish files

Now you will see a thumbnail of the image you have uploaded and two lots of code.

Use the first option as you will be adding the image to English Wikipedia, not an external website.

In your Wikipedia tab:

Open the article you are going to add the image to.

Click "Edit". What you do next depends on whether there’s an infobox (summary) on the right hand side of the page.

If there is no infobox, position your cursor to the left of the bold article name at the top of the article and paste from your clipboard. The image and caption will appear on the right hand side of the article. Click Publish changes and include "added photo" as the Edit summary.

If there is an infobox, click on it and then click Edit. Click Show options at the bottom left and, hopefully, "Image" will be visible for you to click. If not, scroll down to find it.

Then paste into the Image field from your clipboard. You will then need to remove the extra coding, leaving just the filename of the image.

Click Apply changes and the image should appear in the infobox.

Then click Publish changes and put "added photo" as the edit summary.

Congratulations!

You have now completed your practice task and added your first image to a Wikipedia article.
