Aboriginal flag mural, Eveleigh Street, Redfern, circa 2003

Wikipedia's lack of diversity among contributors has long been acknowledged.

People are meeting up across the world to help remedy the imbalance and bias in the diversity of voices on Wikipedia. The City of Sydney Library has joined this movement, hosting edit-a-thons to increase and improve content relevant to our diverse communities.

Everyone is welcome to join our edit-a-thon online, presented in partnership with Wikimedia Australia. It will be led by Kirsten Thorpe, Nathan “Mudyi” Sentance, with experienced Wikipedia editors Toby Hudson and Caddie Brain. Kirsten’s professional and research interests relate to Indigenous self-determination in libraries and archives. Nathan works to ensure that the cultural and historical narratives conveyed by memory institutions are being told and controlled by First Nations people. With their help, participants will focus on improving articles of importance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities on Wikipedia.

No experience is necessary to join the edit-a-thon.

Training and support edit

Where to begin edit

  1. Create your user page (if you don't have one already)
    • New editors - consider adding a line, "Participating in an editathon on 10 July" and linking to this project page - this will let other editors know that you are just starting out
    • More experienced editors are welcome to link to this page too from their user page if they would like to
  2. Choose a topic from the list - either an article to edit or an article to create
  3. Edit the Articles for Creation or Articles for Editing section to put your Wikipedia username against the one you have chosen (talk to Rubicon9bce or another experienced editor if you are having trouble with the table format) and save your changes
  4. Consult the resources listed and the resources being provided
    • If you aren't sure about what to include or how to use a reference, check with the facilitators
  5. Make your changes (remember, you must write in your own words unless adding a cited quotation, and must cite your sources) and save
  6. When you are finished with one article, choose another!

Editing Wikipedia articles edit

  • Click Edit, either at the top of the article or at the section heading for the section you would like to work on
  • Enter your text and use the formatting options
  • Remember that you are working on a live article which others may be reading or editing

Creating Wikipedia articles edit

  • You may prefer to work in your Sandbox - this will let you save your work as you go. If you do work in your sandbox, speak to Rubicon49bce when you are ready to "launch"/publish your article
