Original - Launch of steamboat Frank J. Hecker. St. Clair, Michigan, September 2, 1905
Reason
Momentous and eye-catching photo. I thought ships are commonly launched empty, but here you can see several persons onboard while this stuff is watering :) The accompanying sounds must have been fascinating as well.

  • Comment: Current licensing/sourcing information is substandard- it it claimed it was published before 1923, but where? J Milburn (talk) 17:10, 14 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • I think either in Detroit or in St. Clair, where the photo was taken. I've fixed the license, the copyright notice in the LoC file became stale. Twilightchill t 19:58, 14 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Setting aside licensing issues, this is a terribly dramatic shot with spectacular lighting. Greg L (talk) 03:13, 15 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose I'm really trying hard to like this picture but it seems all wrong to me... The arty shot and angle it's taken from just don't do it for me... The flag may well have been massive, but it seems overly large compared to the size of the ship (unless this is a really small ship - there's no article for the ship so I can't compare), and the heads sticking up over the edge spoil it for me - until I read the caption I thought they were features of the ship... And finally without prior knowledge of the process of sideways launching this picture doesn't show the process - it could even be a straight launch for all we know (launching backward towards but past the camera position)... I know few will agree with me on this but I just don't like it... gazhiley.co.uk 09:10, 16 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose Overall the photo is pretty bland, despite it's historical value. Not featured picture material in my opinion. Haljackey (talk) 00:22, 17 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support - normally I would prefer a more conventional, descriptive angle for a FP, but the image is so dynamic, with so much detail and such crisp lines, I find it hugely compelling. Tim Pierce (talk) 00:37, 18 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. It adds significantly to the article. Launching is a dynamic event, and this crisp and well composed photograph demonstrates that well. Mostlyharmless (talk) 06:18, 19 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
