This page in a nutshell: Use in-line dates for "current" personal life information at BLPs. |
Emily St. John Mandel is divorced, something that was not sufficiently documented as to meet the sourcing policy for a biography of a living person and be included; St. John Mandel, failing to get Wikipedia to update with this detail, did tweet about her divorce. This is suitable WP:ABOUTSELF – but we can't expect every notable person to read Wikipedia guidelines so that their personal lives are not misrepresented.
This essay advocates for the use of WP:AS OF in BLPs when writing about such subjects: aspects of personal life are not often, let alone always, included in articles about people/their careers, and so updated information cannot be expected to be forthcoming; these details are also likely to be more sensitive than an inaccuracy about someone's career. By using "as of" phrasing, the date or year at which the information is sourced (and therefore accurate) to is attributed in-line.
As of the writing of this essay, the article on St. John Mandel mentions the divorce and, pleasantly, already says As of 2022, she lives in Brooklyn and has a girlfriend
