On 1 April, 2024, the Russian Federation announced that it was ceding all of its territory, foreign military bases, military and economic assets, etc., to the nation of Burkina Faso, effective immediately. On that day, the Burkinabè flag was raised together with the Russian flag at the Kremlin, and Vladimir Putin announced his change in position to become the President of the Russian territories of Burkina Faso.[1]

The cession was universally welcomed by the international community at a time of excess global instability, being unanimously affirmed in votes by the United Nations General Assembly and the United Nations Security Council, and largely fizzling out formerly rife fears of World War III. The cession would result in a negotiated settlement of the Russo-Ukrainian War which saw Ukraine cede Crimea to Burkinabè Russia after a referendum while giving the rest of the disputed territories autonomy in the nation. Islamist insurgencies in the Sahel were either crushed or surrendered in the face of the cession, and NATO voluntarily disbanded due to the end of a perceived threat to world peace. Ongoing conflicts fizzled out throughout the world due to mediation by the Burkinabè as well, bringing about world peace. The cession has been regarded as the most major event of the 21st century.

Analysts pointed out the issues in merging the two highly diverse cultures and economic systems of Russia and Burkina Faso during the initial stages of the cession, but since then, have regarded the cession as well managed.
