In May 2022, it was announced Minhal Baig would write and direct the film, with principal photography commencing in and around Chicago.[3]

On October 4, 2023, Sony Pictures Classics acquired distribution rights to the film. It had a limited theatrical release in the United States on April 19, 2024.[5][6]

Critical response

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 93% of 73 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 7.9/10. The website's consensus reads: "Casting grim environs in a nostalgic glow, We Grown Now is a coming-of-age story whose tinges of fantasy only make it feel more honest."[7] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 76 out of 100, based on 21 critics, indicating "generally favorable" reviews.[8]

Accolades

At the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, the film was the winner of the Changemaker Award.[9]

The film also won the Audience Choice Award for Best U.S. Feature at the 2023 Chicago International Film Festival.[10]
