Warkentin is a surname of Russian Mennonite origin. Notable people with the surname include:

It has been said among family members with this name--one of whom is a professional genealogist-- that, when the government insisted that clans be identified by a family name, rather than a patronymic, that there was only one 'house' that chose this name. The name, in its various forms is said to have come from the concatenation of "Wer kennt Ihn", meaning "Who knows Him" ("Him" referring to God). So the family chose to be known as [he or they] who know Him -- Warkentin.
