You did this: [1] but left no justification for removing the liquid-at-tropics. Could you justify it please? William M. Connolley 08:46, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC).

ps: your talk page redirects to your user page. I assume this is a mistake, and I've undone it. If it wasn't, apologies.

WishI could figure out some of the Wiki-communication. I pulled the sentece and depersonalized the idea a bit because I think we should introduce the concept in the first paragraph. I don't mind the liquid water comment, bt it doesn't really belong in the first paragraph. -Bob
OK, I'll take another look. I've taken the liberty of reformatting your answer - its usual to indent (one or more colons) in "conversation". And you can sign your words with four tildas: like this: ~~~~ (skip the nowiki tags when you do it, of course). Oh, and Welcome to Wikipedia. If you have any other questions about wikiworks, put them here or on my talk page and I'll try to answer William M. Connolley 16:32, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC).

Please remember to include the source information, copyright tag, etc. when uploading images to Wikipedia. Thanks! -- Gyrofrog (talk) 04:29, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I've been watching you unfold this outstanding page, with increasing pleasure. Will you give some explanation of the granite formation labelled "Typical exposures of granite in the southern Arabian Shield. Courtesy Peter Johnson" —which actually seems quite astonishing! All one piece, an eroded extrusion?--Wetman 00:14, 20 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Thanks Wetman, your compliments are much appreciated. I'll add a few comments about the beautiful granite exposure. I'm in dallas, where are you?

   -Zyzzy
Hah! That's it exactly! (I'm a New Yorker born and bred.) I hope my edits in paleogeography, etc, which you'll find here and there, aren't too irritatingly amateurish. Sharpen them anywhere you see misleading waffle. Once you've finished Arabian-Nubian Shield without being distracted, I wish you'd go through it again, after a rest, and briefly identify some of the purely technical vocabulary—appositives and dashes help— for the well-meaning amateur. The best Wikipedia articles are complete in themselves, without a reader having to pursue hyperlinks to follow the meaning. The trick is, to explain without breaking the flow. --Wetman 02:24, 20 Jun 2005 (UTC)

WM;

I'm hoping to attract other flies to my pile, so it will let it steep for a while. If there is no triage then I will jump back in. I do appreciate your advice, I am mostly writing about what I know and an audience, er...another perspective, is useful. Did you take that amazing Cholula photograph of pyramid and church? Wow. You know, Johnson's granite and your pyrachurch would make a stunning pair

Welcome! edit

I see that no one has welcomed you officially yet, so... welcome, Zyzzy, and thank you for your high quality contributions! Here are a few good links for newcomers (although your editing shows that you must have come across some of them already):

I hope you continue to enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! By the way, you can sign your name on Talk and vote pages using four tildes like this: ~~~~. It produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the village pump or ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome! — mark 11:32, 21 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Thanks Mark, I am enjoying being a Wikiholic and meeting new friends. Zyzzy 11:35, 21 Jun 2005 (UTC)Zyzzy

Your maps and images are superb, and it's great to have an expert contributing. By the way, I gather that you created Image:AfarGEOLOGY.jpg yourself; you might want to tag it accordingly by adding something like {{GFDL-self}} on the image page (if you want to release it under the GFDL license, that is).
I, for one, release my maps and images under the Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 license ({{cc-by-2.0}}). In any case, make sure they get a copyright tag, otherwise the 'image police' will eventually come along and your images would run the risk of getting deleted. — mark 11:43, 21 Jun 2005 (UTC)
See Image:African language families.png for an example of how I tag my images. — mark 11:56, 21 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I'll try to figureout the damn tag thhingsometime. 01:12, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)Zyzzy

It's pretty easy really. Pick a license (I can recommend the one I mentioned above) and add a tag, that's about it. All you have to do is typing {{cc-by-2.0}}. Adding some source info on the image description page is also a good thing to do, since in general it is Wikipedia practice to attribute images on their description pages, not in articles.I've added the cc-by-2.0 copyright as an example at Image:AfarGEOLOGY.jpg. Turin papyrus edit

In case you were wondering why Turin papyrus is attracting so many editors — it's been featured in the 'Did you know' section of the Main Page. Cheers, — mark 01:47, 26 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Cool! I have a couple of jpegs to add when I get to work Monday. I got these and the text from james harrell at U. Toledo, who knows more about Pharonic and Roman use of stones and mining in Egypt than anyone else in the world. Zyzzy 02:43, 26 Jun 2005 (UTC)Bob

Watchlist edit

Hi Zyzzy. Yesterday, a bug surfaced in the new Mediawiki 1.5 software which caused the watchlist functionality to stop working for a few hours. It's been fixed now, as far as I know (my watchlist is working again). More information about the problem can be found here. The bug report over at Mediazilla can be found here.

Text appears in a 'typewriter' font and in a dashed box when you put a few spaces in front of the line. (This is actually a feature of Wikipedia; see Help:Editing#Character formatting.) If you want to have an indentation, you can use colons, one for each level.

Image Tagging Image:Ophiolite1.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Ophiolite1.jpg. I notice it currently doesn't have an image copyright tag, so its copyright status is therefore unclear. Please add a tag to let us know its copyright status. (If you created/took the picture then you can use {{gfdl}} to release it under the GFDL. If you can claim fair use use {{fairuse}}.) If you don't know what any of this means, just let me know on the image description page where you got the images and I'll tag them for you. Otherwise, see Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use. Thanks so much. --Secretlondon 19:19, 23 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Image Tagging Image:Arabian-Nubian Shield.jpg edit

This image may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Arabian-Nubian Shield.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the image qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of image pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Image copyright problem with Image:STS113-708-15.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading Image:STS113-708-15.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.

Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Carnildo or ask for help at Wikipedia talk:Image copyright tags. Thank you.

File permission problem with File:Subductionfactory.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading File:Subductionfactory.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Bulwersator (talk) 15:45, 5 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

ArbCom elections are now open! edit

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
