Navigation popups edit

Hello!

I find your name in Wikipedia:Tools/Navigation popups#Contributors.

Actually I recategorizing a thousands of files in Commons (Commons:user:Jmarchn, in Medicine field, thus I am physician). A lot of images are overcategorized, then I delete this categories. Obviously, also I created a new categories and recategorize a lot of files.

Currently mouseover an image the popup shows the category number to which that image is linked, but does not show what categories are. If there is a popup that shows a category list to which an image (or file) is linked would be very useful to me (and, obviously, for other users). This would avoid me opening the page of each image and, more quickly, with Cat-a-lot could eliminate (or assign) a category to a set of files.

Could you (or another programmer that you know) create an option that would be activated via "window.popupShowCategoryList = true;" (with a default value of "false"), with this option?

Very, very thank-you. Jmarchn (talk) 17:14, 2 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Upcoming changes to wikitext parsing edit

Hello,

There will be some changes to the way wikitext is parsed during the next few weeks. It will affect all namespaces. You can see a list of pages that may display incorrectly at Special:LintErrors. Since most of the easy problems have already been solved at the English Wikipedia, I am specifically contacting tech-savvy editors such as yourself with this one-time message, in the hope that you will be able to investigate the remaining high-priority pages during the next month.

There are approximately 10,000 articles (and many more non-article pages) with high-priority errors. The most important ones are the articles with misnested tags and table problems. Some of these involve templates, such as infoboxes, or the way the template is used in the article. In some cases, the "error" is a minor, unimportant difference in the visual appearance. In other cases, the results are undesirable. You can see a before-and-after comparison of any article by adding ?action=parsermigration-edit to the end of a link, like this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Foss?action=parsermigration-edit (which shows a difference in how {{infobox ship}} is parsed).

If you are interested in helping with this project, please see Wikipedia:Linter. There are also some basic instructions (and links to even more information) at https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-ambassadors/2018-April/001836.html You can also leave a note at WT:Linter if you have questions.

Thank you for all the good things you do for the English Wikipedia. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 21:18, 19 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

Disambiguation link notification for May 20 edit

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Ensenada Airport, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Ensenada (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

webarchive edit

That will work. The |date= argument is technically required and any missing will be added to Category:Webarchive template warnings though no red warning is displayed. I have a bot that can automatically fill in the |date= keying off articles in this cat, though it runs periodic when the cat gets big. The ability to extract the date from the URL is more of a convenience factor since there were initially so many (95% wayback) but most are now fixed and why I haven't done the same for the rest that use 14-digit timestamps, a couple dozen; the code would need to refactored to comfortably handle it. -- GreenC 13:10, 2 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Template:Rotten Tomatoes edit

Hi... thanks for all your recent template tweaks. I was wondering: your edit here puts pages in the tracking category even if they have the appropriate wikidata property set... is that what you intended? I would have thought they should only be there if they had no parameter and no corresponding wikidata property. —Joeyconnick (talk) 05:57, 30 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Joeyconnick: Hi. The {{Rotten Tomatoes}} template doesn't actually use or track Wikidata... yet. The template was/is using {{PAGENAMEE}} when the ID is not provided. That didn't always generate a working link, so I am cleaning up the instances of missing ID now (found some interesting ones where the Wikidata property generated a different link). I am almost done with that (as you noticed, I've been getting sidetracked updating many other film templates that weren't using the associated Wikidata property). After I've checked the remaining 18 articles in that category, I will update the Rotten Tomatoes template to use Wikidata... and then the category would only be added in the case you mentioned. -- Zyxw (talk) 06:16, 30 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

Replacing <tt> with <kbd> edit

Hi. I see you're replacing a lot of <tt> with <kbd> tags; have you considered that this is by-and-large semantically nonsensical? IMO where <tt> were being used purely to efficiently monospace the font, we'd better use a <span> with a dedicated class (.mw-code didn't look okay to me, but I have so many custom stylesheets applied, I have no clue without a lot of dicking about whether that's "normal") to do the job. The "default" monospaced (user-agent yadda yadda) tags in HTML5 have primarily semantic usefulness, and the font-family is more of a side effect than their purpose. Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. RonBot (talk) 17:13, 6 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of Kristaps Nīmanis edit

The article Kristaps Nīmanis has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Fails WP:NHOCKEY as the player only participated in junior level national teams, not top tier senior teams. Player's pro career consists of only very minor leagues. No ref found that indicate this player otherwise meets WP:GNG.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Nomination of Kristaps Nīmanis for deletion edit

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Kristaps Nīmanis is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Kristaps Nīmanis until a consensus is reached, and anyone, including you, is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article. Yosemiter (talk) 17:16, 24 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

RU position parameters edit

Hi Zyxw, I am just looking at some of these edits to instances of the Template:Infobox rugby biography, e.g. for Robbie Deans here.

You are quite right that the parameters "ru_currentposition" and "ru_position" are now displayed under the one heading and having more than one seems to prevents the other from being displayed. However, I think this more of a fault than a feature with this template. The template was rewritten recently and IMO some errors were introduced, including the merger of these two fields.

The two parameters describe different things: (a) "ru_position" is for a player's on-field position(s), e.g. Fullback, for Robbie Deans in his former playing days; but (b) "ru_currentposition" is used for the person's job title and employer - e.g. Head coach of Panasonic Wild Knights. This parameter changes as a career progresses; it's dynamic. The on-field position is relatively unchanging; it tends to be static.

IMO the two fields shouldn't be merged. The template shoud be changed to display them separately. -- Ham105 (talk) 20:25, 4 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Ham105: Hi and thanks for the info. {{Infobox rugby biography}} currently has three parameters that may be displayed in the Position(s) field under the "Rugby union career" heading: "ru_currentposition", "ru_position", and "position". They are displayed in the order listed, so even an empty |ru_currentposition= prevents a non-empty |ru_position= from being displayed. The same issue exists under the "Rugby league career" heading with the parameters "rl_currentposition" and "rl_position". If you want to pursue having those parameters displayed separately, I will hold off on merging them in the articles. -- Zyxw (talk) 21:15, 4 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

Your edit on Anna Seidel edit

Hello Zyxw. I just changed your edit on the German short track speed skater Anna Seidel where you added 3 different single template-links and i removed them and added the meta-template {{Sports links}} instead, and this is suitable for many sports. See its module (Module:External links/conf/Sports) for which type of external links that are included. Best seasonal wishes, Migrant (talk) 21:19, 27 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi. I am aware of that template, in fact I am the one who created it and the associated modules here on the English Wikipedia (copied, translated, and updated from the Norwegian Wikipedia). I am glad you have found it useful. -- Zyxw (talk) 02:57, 28 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the IW-linked-template from NO:WP I updated the norwegian template som few months ago so maybe the english one needs an update too ? I would also suggest a broader use of it throughout the sportsbiographies in EN:WP. Is it possible to run a bot-addition of this template to these kinda sports-biographies, although I'm no user with bot-knowledge to do it ?
