Lead

edit

I don't understand what--Adding another layer to the character is a vague backstory which is gradually revealed as both programmes progress.--means. What is adding another layer? What is gradually revealed? Are you referring to his immortality? Also, citations do go in the lead, when they are controversial statements that will need immediate source. The first fact tag I left is because it's a statement about the future. The second is for the statement about him being the first in the series to be openly gay.  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 12:11, 3 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

I believe the backstory refers to the fact that much of the character's life before the TV series is shrouded in mystery. He was born in the future, and worked for an obscure organisation called the "Time Agency", so there's a bunch of stuff about him we don't know. His real name isn't even Jack Harkness. Hmm, that sentence makes sense to me, as a fan, but it could possibly be made a little clearer. I'm sure one of the existing sources mentions that he's the first homo/bi/pan/omni/whatever other prefix-sexual on the show.  Paul  730 13:32, 3 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
I abstained from references in the lead because it's discouraged. This article (cited lower in the article) discusses that Jack is the "first openly gay companion". Ditto "will reappear in 2008", although if being new news qualifies it for needing a separate reference, that wouldn't be hard to insert. I'm going away for my university interview at Balliol for a couple days, so I won't be around to do any more work on this for a while.~ZytheTalk to me! 14:37, 3 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
I think controverisal statements in the lead are supposed to be sourced. Certain things in the Jason Voorhees lead are cited, those which discuss how iconic the character is. Good luck with your interview BTW. :)  Paul  730 14:41, 3 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
I think I just misread the "back-story" bit. But citations in the lead are not discouraged, they are just not actively performed. In most cases, if a proper summary is performed then it would be too vague to cite any one thing, but in most cases there are instances of specifics that warrant mentioning in the lead, and may require citation.  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 15:44, 3 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Do you wanna move this over to the mainspace now? Just asking since it's not my sandbox and everything, don't want to be rude by nicking your stuff. ;)  Paul  730 19:12, 21 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
