How to put sound on Wikipedia?
edit

I have a song that I want to put on Wikipedia in article as a sample. But I don't know how to put it there, because of that copyright and source stuff. All I now is, my friend gave me the album that song is on and i ripped it onto my PC. Can I put it on Wikipedia as a sample, and if I can, how to do it? ZAPMUT (talk) 18:53, 11 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hey, ZAPMUT. I'm very glad you didn't do this already, as you are correct, there are some very strict guidelines as to how this works. First of all, you're going to need to shorten the file. In order for us to use the song under a claim of fair use, you can only upload a clip that is 30 seconds long, or 10% of the song, whichever is shorter. So, if the song you have is 2:30, you can only upload a 15 second clip (150 seconds / 10 = 15 seconds). If you don't have an audio editor on your computer, don't worry - you can download Audacity, which will work even better, as it allows you to save the file in a working format. You'll have to save the file as a .ogg (Ogg Vorbis) file, because mp3's cannot be uploaded for various reasons. Once all that is done, go to Wikipedia:Upload (or click on "Upload file" in the sidebar) and click on "from somewhere else". Fill out the form, using this information. All of this information must be included or the file will be deleted.
  1. The name of the original song (under description)
  2. The name of the artist (under author)
  3. The name of the album from which this song came. (under description)
  4. A statement in the Permission section that states the following:
    1. The length of the clip, including where it starts and ends (i.e. 20 seconds long, from 1:23 to 1:43)
    2. There is no way this clip could be used to harm the author financially (this is mainly why we can only use a small clip)
    3. What article the clip is to be used in. The song must be used in at least one article, and must specify all articles it is to be used in. The song may never be used outside of the main article space.
    4. The song is intended to be used for an encyclopedic purpose.
Once all that is done, select "Music sample" from the drop-down menu below the summary box. Double-check every thing, and submit the form.
If you need help with any of that, please let me know. It is very complicated, and any mistakes will cause the file to be deleted. You may also want to look at WP:NFCC, our policy on how to deal with "non-free content" such as this. I hope this helps! Hersfold (t/a/c) 20:12, 11 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
Login error
edit

OK, I have a problem. I log in, and it's succesful, and on every page on the top is the link to my user page, my preferences etc., but when I come to article Dr. Dre it all disappears and it says: Login/Create account. Also, I can't edit that page.ZAPMUT (talk) 17:51, 22 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

If you click on the edit link it (should) display the following message:

Note: This page has been semi-protected so that only established users can edit it.

What this means is:
Semi-protection disables editing for anonymous users and registered accounts less than four days old. Wikipedia:Protection_policy
Ajl772 (talk) 20:03, 22 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

But my account is more than four days old. And I still don't know why it says Login/Create account when I'm logged on. ZAPMUT (talk) 20:20, 22 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Try deleting your browser cache/ refresh the page, see if that helps...
Ajl772 (talk) 20:41, 22 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Nah, it don't help... thanks anyway... ZAPMUT (talk) 20:59, 22 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Well, sorry I couldn't help you right now.
Ajl772 (talk) 21:04, 22 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
I came across this problem before, so I'll do some searching around to see if I can find it again...

Here, try looking at this page: Wikipedia:Bypass_your_cache

Does that help at all? Ajl772 (talk) 21:50, 22 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

{{helpme}}

I tried it all, and it don't helps. However, my brother just created account on Wikipedia. And when he goes to article Dr. Dre his user name is shown at the top. But he can't edit it because the page is semi-protected. Just because of curiosity, I wonder do you maybe know why is this happening?

P.S. Thank you. ZAPMUT (talk) 12:01, 23 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

You are not alone at all. There is a bug. Take a look at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#Being logged out (and the next two immediately following sections there); Wikipedia:Help desk#Login, Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#Login (where it is suggested you purge not your cache but the page's cache that is giving you problems editing while logged in using "action=purge"; see WP:PURGE) Wikipedia:Village pump (assistance)#Wikipedia keeps logging me out after restarting browser and others. The Main fixes that apopear to work, if temporarily, are the page cache purge alraedy detailed, hard refreshing (ctrl-shift-R), and not using safari or firefox, which seem more affected than other browsers (I'm not sure I buy that which browser you use has anything to do with it though).--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 12:25, 23 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Ey, thanks both to Ajl772 and to Fuhghettaboutit. You guys really helped me. ZAPMUT (talk) 21:44, 23 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

New article
edit

I have a question. I just found out that there is not an article on Wikipedia about Eazy-E's son Lil Eazy-E, who is also a rapper. In fact, it does have an URL, but it redirects to Eazy-E. So on the Eazy-E discussion page I read that article Lil Eazy-E existed, but it was redirected because he is not notable enough. But I disagree with this. I would like to start this article again, but I don't know much about Lil Eazy-E. But they may be some people who do know a lot and would write it down on Wikipedia, so may I start this article again? ZAPMUT (talk) 17:22, 24 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Lil Eazy-E was deleted because the subject did not meet the notability guideline for musicians. If he now meets that guideline (for example if he has had a national hit single), then you can certainly recreate his page. You'll have to request that the current redirect be unprotected, explaining clearly why Lil Eazy-E is now notable. Algebraist 18:00, 24 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Shit Hits the Fan.ogg)

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Shit Hits the Fan.ogg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:26, 19 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

AfD nomination of Shady/Aftermath vs. Murder Inc. feud

edit

An editor has nominated Shady/Aftermath vs. Murder Inc. feud, an article which you have created or worked on, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Shady/Aftermath vs. Murder Inc. feud and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 09:59, 4 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
