Update posted G.A.S 19:37, 23 June 2007 (UTC)
Update posted. I do not think it need to be updated urgently (nobody has complained about it being OR), there are more important editing to do, such as planning the episode list and articles or anything on the todo list. Regards, G.A.S 20:31, 23 June 2007 (UTC)
I'm not really sure about the episode articles. I think a single episode of TMM is not important enough for its own article: TMM's only 52 episodes long (with only seven manga volumes - pretty short for a series of that kind), not that much known and popular (compared to some other magical girl anime); besides, it'll be very difficult to find reliable secondary sources for the summaries, because such info is usually only on fansites, full of rumors and speculations. 夢の騎士Yume no Kishi - Talk 07:35, 24 June 2007 (UTC)
I know what you mean, but the list articles are in need of work. Also, category:Oh My Goddess! episodes has very little to no info on each episode, yet each one has an article. (And that episode list is featured. If they got away with it... We do have more info per article already, and although the articles will be short, they will probably contain at least double as much information as the list does.
At least it is a better place to put information such as dub air dates, dub, translated and original titles (MMP/MM:AV/etc.), etc, since this information takes up too much space in the list.
What do you think? G.A.S 09:18, 24 June 2007 (UTC)
Futher information that would actually make more sense in individual episode articles are the Chimera Anima of the day (as opposed to listing the lot in the one article), minor characters (i.e. not friends and family, but the once-off characters) etc. Currently, the lists' info is basically a re-iteration of events in the episode, since there are not a lot of information about the characters. Those lists can then be easily trimmed to provide links to the actual episodes, and a concise description. This also means the pictures will be moved to the articles.[Your comment?] G.A.S 13:18, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

Nice, but we will still need sources, and I have no clue where to find them... and I still think this stuff is not notable enough... 夢の騎士Yume no Kishi - Talk

In time it should be done; but not in the mainspace — we should look at the information that we have, and work from there. I won't start without a go-ahead. Maybe a single draft episode will be a start? If it is satisfactory, it can be moved to mainspace when all of the changes are done. Regards, G.A.S 14:09, 24 June 2007 (UTC)
Maybe later then... Is there anything else that you think require more urgent attention? G.A.S 17:29, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

Episode articles and lists

I had a look at Wikipedia:Television_episodes and other policies:

  • Regarding sources: WP:RS & WP:PSTS: "Primary sources are very reliable when it comes to general information about the subject (e.g. where an organisation is seated), but not reliable at all when it comes to opinions (e.g. "it was an enormous hit"). Articles that rely solely on primary sources also require a secondary reliable source." — The problem is finding secondary sources.
  • Regarding plot, the episodes are a primary source, and it may be correctly used as such (it does not allow for interpretations of the plot, though).
  • Regarding content: WP:EPISODE This page gives guidelines what information a list / articles should contain.
  • Regarding notability; (See WP:NOT#PLOT) "Wikipedia articles on works of fiction should contain real-world context and sourced analysis, offering detail on a work's achievements, impact or historical significance." The articles by themselves, if they are mere plot summaries will not be notable. So we should consider if any of the aforementioned can be added. (e.g. analysis)
  • On the other hand is the question "Will the merge reduce the quality or coherence of the target article?" — i.e. if there are individual articles, and the list is very good, such articles are allowed.

It seems to me that most featured lists of articles have individual episode articles to keep the quality of the list high, so should we decide to improve the list to featured status, this will come as a natural process, not the other way around; so the list is the place to start.

I have also came across a few other concerns when reading said policies, but I will discuss them in due time. Regards, G.A.S 20:17, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for letting me know - you could have updated your user page accordingly, I actually looked there first. G.A.S 06:14, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

Episode articles

OK, I looked at my copy of the very first version of the episode list (i.e. what I originally planned to include in it; some of this stuff was cut out in the very beginning, because I felt that the page will be too long). Here's what these summaries contain:

  1. Episode titles and air dates (originally only Japanese and English, but other may be included if sources for them are available);
  2. Corresponding manga chapter(s), if based directly on the manga plot (note that some events are different in the two versions, and some of them are arranged differently; as a result, one episode may have two corresponding manga chapters, and vice versa; many episodes are just fillers not based on the manga at all);
  3. Staff/cast;
  4. Characters introduced (main and minor; the same section is used to indicate when a character's true identity is revealed (i.e., the Blue Knight, Deep Blue and Alto), or even just name (e.g., Deep Blue first speaks in episode two, but his name is revealed only in episode six));
  5. Transformation/weapon/attack first used (I only came up with this because of Lettuce; in episode three she transforms without saying anything, and in the next episode she doesn't transform on screen, so her transformation phrase is not said until later on);
  6. Chimera Anima of the day;
  7. Songs (characters' image songs and insert songs played in the episode); not important at all;
  8. The plot summary itself.

夢の騎士Yume no Kishi - Talk 10:34, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the detail (I have numbered the bullets for easy reference)
  1. Numbers 1 and 2 above are crucial detail for getting articles a bit "out of universe" (See my detail post above — I spent around 2–3 hours writing it and doing research)
  2. Number 3 is also good as far as guest voice actors are concerned, and when someone is not credited, for instance the Blue Knight.
  3. Number 4 is of minor importance – something for "interest's sake" – but useful
  4. Numbers 5 and 6 are useful as far as analysis of the article is concerned, otherwise should be part of the plot.
  5. Number 7, as you say, not important (It is explicitly mentioned in the MoS/Policies that it isn't)
  6. Number 8; important — should be between 200 to 250 words ideally (one of the policies specify 10 words per minute).
Please have a look at the prior post, though. It basically means that having a concise list is very important, and episode articles are a "nice to have" — as the featured lists in both WP:EPISODE#'List of' pages and WP:Anime#Featured Lists demonstrate.

The list is much more important, but the articles will be the bulk of the work. (Although all of the articles can actually be done on one page, it is easier to format them that way.) G.A.S 15:41, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

Concerns — too many pictures?

I am concerned by the tons of images currently used in the articles:

(WP:FUC 3 (a) Minimal use. As little non-free content as possible is used in an article. Short rather than long video and audio excerpts are used. Multiple items are not used if one will suffice; one is used only if necessary.)

Maybe the current pictures (same as in the articles) can be used instead of uploading more mugshots; they are quite decent)

(i.e. Image:Aoyama.jpg instead of Image:Masaya1.png, etc.)

(This is one of the concerns I mentioned earlier in Episode articles and lists.)

G.A.S 16:01, 28 June 2007 (UTC)

I think there's no need for more pics - to show what the character look like, one's quite enough - we can just reuse those that are already in the characters' articles. 夢の騎士Yume no Kishi - Talk 16:07, 28 June 2007 (UTC)
I see someone re-added all the Fair use images to Chimera Anima since this version, (I think this version is acceptable, as it is perfectly complies to #8 "Non-free media is not used unless its presence significantly increases readers' understanding of the topic in a way that words alone cannot"). Also see this list. Some of the other articles are also on it.
Regards, G.A.S 12:26, 15 July 2007 (UTC)
I don't really care for all this stuff. (Though I don't like how they just remove all images without even contacting people who contribute to the articles, so that these people could decide which images can be left. Removing images without adapting the layout = making articles ugly.) 夢の騎士Yume no Kishi - Talk 12:39, 15 July 2007 (UTC)
It just means that we should critically review the articles for overuse before they do. I'd say if we keep it to less than 10 in an article there should not be too much issues, since they will go through the articles with high amounts of pictures first. If an image is used in an individual article and in the main article, I think it need not be counted in the main article. We might need to do a discussion on each article's talk page to test compliance. (with AoD too) G.A.S 12:48, 15 July 2007 (UTC)

I still don't like when something that has been around for ages is removed, and no one even bothers to give people time to solve the problem... sigh... Can this picture be useful? 夢の騎士Yume no Kishi - Talk 13:35, 15 July 2007 (UTC)

I do not agree with the method either, but honestly, if you look at their list, I think it is an impossible job to notify the regular editors of each article.
The picture per se is good, but is too busy, and is high resolution without the possibility of lowering it. Rather I think 4 pictures from the anime, 3 from the manga. 2 plants (or less) 3 animals (or less), 2 spirit/human (or less). Described as:
  1. A Chimera rat, A typical Chimera Anima
  2. Chimera Anima comes in a variety of species (2nd animal type)
  3. A chimera (animal) in the manga

This is annoying me

How often (or how many edits directed to this) do you think the Mews ages get changed? Why do I ask? Because I think your may end up having to make a template warning like {{subst:User:Yume no Kishi/uw-names}}. It is far too common for IPers and new users to change this, just like the romaji counterparts of their names. THROUGH FIRE, JUSTICE IS SERVED! 04:03, 1 July 2007 (UTC)

Can't be helped. I mean - they don't even bother to look at the Mews' articles - Ichigo's specifically shows she's not 11 at any point in the original manga. But we don't need a warning for this - {{subst:uw-error}} will work (since it is already said in the articles why "11-year-old" is incorrect). 夢の騎士Yume no Kishi - Talk 04:12, 1 July 2007 (UTC)
On the second thought... If you look at the main Sailor Moon article, it doesn't list characters' ages at all. 夢の騎士Yume no Kishi - Talk 04:20, 1 July 2007 (UTC)

True, but some Serial Experiments Lain lists them (or the ages of the people said), and Bleach does also. So I guess it doesnt matter if an age is listed or not. THROUGH FIRE, JUSTICE IS SERVED! 07:42, 1 July 2007 (UTC)

In my opinion, the ages thing is dealt with in the individual articles, it is not necessary to repeat the age in the main article: the age is very "in-universe".
On the same topic, Both Bleach and Sailor Moon are good articles, and Serial Experiments Lain is a featured article.
Further research shows that Bleach and Sailor Moon have separate character articles while Serial Experiments Lain do not — this may be the reason for mentioning the ages in Serial Experiments Lain.
I think there are more important information to give in the main article, and that the ages are not necessary there, especially since the ages differ as explained. If it is necessary to keep it, and I do not think it is, maybe comment should be inserted there with the link to the specific sections.
Optimally the descriptions there should be no more than 100 words each (this the average amount in SM's article)

I've noticed you changed the citations for the kanji on other articles except the original Mews. Why is that? THROUGH FIRE, JUSTICE IS SERVED! 03:45, 8 July 2007 (UTC)

I'm just not sure whether it *is* a nice way to make the references section shorter or not. I'm basically making direct links to the kanji definitions instead of inserting footnotes. But I'm not sure if it's a good idea, so I started with the secondary characters articles, just to see if it is better or not. But I think I'll eventually do this in all articles. If no one minds it. 夢の騎士Yume no Kishi - Talk
In trying to find an answer to the transliteration question, I found Raichō. There, kanji is directly linked to wiktionary.

I am not sure about the part inside the brackets though. Keep Japanese romaji (which seems more and more correct), or use English spelling? I am not sure, but that paragraph may refer only to the words as used in the article or outside of the brackets. G.A.S 18:34, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

Hm... I'm not sure either. But at least there should be some consistency - that means choosing one version and using it everywhere. And using romaji makes the text look less redundant, considering the English spelling is usually provided anyway. 夢の騎士Yume no Kishi - Talk

...What AngelofDeath removed from the characters' articles only describes their introduction (i.e. the beginning of the story) - the main article needs some *global* differences described... For example:
  • The beginning of the story: in the manga, the five girls meet in the first chapter, and their infusion with animal DNA is an accident; in the anime, they do not meet, and at least Ichigo is scanned for DNA compartibility and is *purposefully* infused with cat DNA.
  • In the anime, the Mews are given a bit of background: Zakuro's past is mentioned at some points; Mint's family and her relationship with her brother (who is not in the manga) are shown; Lettuce's family is present in one episode.
  • Lettuce/Pie relationship is apparently not present in the manga.
  • In the anime, the aliens leave the Earth without saying a proper good-bye to the Mew Mews.

In the Japanese Wikipedia, the "原作とアニメの相違点" section contains the differences. G.A.S 19:53, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

What I wrote here is from French Wikipedia. ~_^ The Japanese Wikipedia even had some stuff about the Mews' hair/eye color (it changes in the transformation in the anime, but not in the manga). I'm pretty sure there could be enough info on the difference in the characters' articles, why put these in the main article? 夢の騎士Yume no Kishi - Talk 20:02, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

I see what you mean... Yes, that information would make more sense in the individual articles. G.A.S 20:08, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

Suggestion

I suggest changing the paragraph in the article to the one as follow (for better readability, using the nihongo template):

Ichigo's kanji (, momo) means "peach", and Zakuro's kanji (, fuji), means "wisteria". In Japanese, "pink" is called "peach color". "Peach color" (桃色, momo-iro) [1] does not refer to the color of the peach fruit — a peach's color is called "skin color" (肌色, hada-iro)[1]. Although "Purple" has its own kanji (, murasaki),[1] "light purple" is written wisteria color (藤色, fuji-iro). The kanji of the other characters' colors are also similar to traits of the characters, such as their signature color (for the Mew Mews), hair color or eye color.

Of course, it will make sense to link the Kanji too.

Its it ever implied in an episode that Ichigo likes shopping? THROUGH FIRE JUSTICE IS SERVED! 03:35, 15 August 2007 (UTC)

There are a few episodes that she is seen shopping (i.e. Episode 24 — A Mysterious Gem – Brilliance is within you!). Not sure whether it can be cited; I do not believe anybody say so about her, and the mere fact that she is in a mall is in my opinion not good enough. G.A.S 06:04, 15 August 2007 (UTC)

RE:

"I think all of their Mew/non-Mew names can be referred to a single page - vol.3, page 2, the character intro section."

Ok. I was mainly thinking of when their names appear in the story, but oh well. You change them now if you want. THROUGH FIRE JUSTICE IS SERVED! 23:52, 15 August 2007 (UTC)

I'm not entirely sure about this; it's just that these intro pages show both normal names and Mew names, so that you can see they are written differently, without searching through the manga. The point of citations for these is to show the difference, right? 夢の騎士Yume no Kishi - Talk 00:02, 16 August 2007 (UTC)

Yes, so you can change then if you want. THROUGH FIRE JUSTICE IS SERVED! 00:44, 17 August 2007 (UTC)

I found this article..

When I was checking all information on other article linking to the TMM articles (the "What links here" in the tool box) I came across this article:

I could be wrong, but I believe there was a decision made some while ago that all "category:series cast member" were to be replaced by "list of series cast members". I guess this is the result. G.A.S 19:12, 17 August 2007 (UTC)
Yes, this was a replacement for the category. Still looks pretty silly, but I doubt anything can be done about this... 夢の騎士Yume no Kishi - Talk 19:18, 17 August 2007 (UTC)

Can this be put up for speedy deletion? THROUGH FIRE JUSTICE IS SERVED! 00:47, 18 August 2007 (UTC)

If this article was the result of some other deletion process (for categories)... hm...
They could've just delete the category without making a silly-looking list out of it...
In any case, it doesn't seem to be a CSD. We can propose deletion or list it on AFD. (And I'm not sure whether this should be done...) 夢の騎士Yume no Kishi - Talk 03:52, 18 August 2007 (UTC)
I found the CFD nomination here.
The list is referred to in Category:Voice_actors_by_series, so it should ideally stay.

RE:

my opinion: I enjoy the anime version better because everyone get a chance in the spotlight; Ichigo has the most attention in the manga, a bit too much for me. Everyone one else is a minor character, even Masaya, who is part of the blue trio.

I suppose Deep Blue needs to be included in the anime vs. manga section; I think everything that is a big change is in the section but him. THROUGH FIRE JUSTICE IS SERVED! 19:43, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

I would like the content; but for the main article we might need secondary sources as well, and I do not think any exist... and they would be needed to get the article up to GA status if this were to be included. It might work better in the characters' articles.
Anyway, would you have a try at summaries for the Manga chapters for the list article? I thought about 20-25 words, each; maybe just one or two chapters for now (For such summaries are very hard' work)? About the style the epidodes are done in (enough info to identify the chapter)?
Regards, G.A.S 21:47, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
AoD:
I won't say Masaya is a minor character in the manga... Anyway, what I was talking about... how the Blue Trio got screwed up?..
The main thing that caused stupid changes is that the animators decided to have a generic "enemies discussing their evil plans with their almighty leader who doesn't really do anything to help them for whatever reason" scene at the beginning of almost every episode. The original version of it is obviously taken from the manga (J: vol.1, p.147), but there it's just one scene, and the first time I spotted DB's name mentioned is in volume 3. In the anime, it would've still worked... maybe... but then they decided to show what DB looks like, and that was only half-way through the story. Looks like they wanted to make his awakening... eh... a bit longer than in the manga... -_-;; Of course, later on they had to somehow explain this, so they added that story... about Deep Blue's "true" spirit living in some alternate dimension, and his "three spiritual body parts" (man, now I just can't watch this scene without laughing...). In the manga, there's no dumb stuff about his origin (who cares who he really is if he's going to kill all people on the planet...).
...Well, at least they tried to find some way to fix the messed up things... now the only question is how this is supposed to be described...
Unfortunately, what they did to the Blue Knight is far worse... Argh... seems that I'll spend the rest of the summer rewriting some particular TMM articles... >.<
G.A.S:
I'm not good at writing summaries, but I'll try, especially since the beginning of the story is similar in both versions. 夢の騎士Yume no Kishi - Talk 22:21, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
Thank you for the first four, I will use them a bit later. If you would prefer I could write the summaries in paragraph form, but to do that I would need the 4 or 5 most important items for each chapter (in bullet format). As there is not even a snowball's chance in hell that I could get the manga myself.
I expected that they would start the same, but chances are that the information can only go to a) the main article, b) the list article or c) the characters' articles*; and it would be odd if the list had good episode coverage but little/no information on the manga's plot.
*It does seem though that separate episode articles would no longer be possible due to recent changes in WP:EPISODE (per your original concern about them). It might be possible to use separate "season" articles for this though, but we can worry about this later.

I had a look at The Blue Knight's article:

Refer to WP:WIAGA

  •  Y It is well written.
  •  Y It is factually accurate and verifiable.
  •  Y It is broad in its coverage.
  •  Y It is neutral; that is, it represents viewpoints fairly and without bias.
  •  Y It is stable; that is, it does not change significantly from day to day and is not the subject of an ongoing edit war.
  •  Y It contains images, where possible, to illustrate the topic.

As such I think it may be time to put the article up for peer review, to identify issues I might have missed, as I think this article qualifies for GA status. G.A.S 12:16, 25 August 2007 (UTC)

I'm still not sure about some things in this article. In particular, it is based entirely on primary sources, and currently it's impossible to find any reliable secondary sources, because everything that is written about what I call The Blue Trio on the web is basically just fan speculations. One reason for this is that the story is somewhat different in the manga and anime, and another is that nothing is explained directly there. I think I took care not to go into OR and to use citations only if what is said or shown can't be interpreted in multiple ways, but there are some things left that I'm just not sure about... 夢の騎士Yume no Kishi - Talk
When the time is right Peer Review may tell us how the article can be improved.
What items are you not sure about?
Regards, G.A.S 14:49, 26 August 2007 (UTC)
  • The VA section looks very short with the info on adaptations aside from Japanese and English removed. It just doesn't look right...
  • Somewhere in the History section there's an extra paragraph I left in a hidden comment (more manga vs. anime differences) - I've never seen this change mentioned on TMM websites, maybe just at some forums. Can't decide whether to include it or not.
  • The third content note. I just noticed this thing once while watching the anime and thought it would be interesting to mention. But it looks unsourced. 夢の騎士Yume no Kishi - Talk 15:49, 26 August 2007 (UTC)

Other languages

Hi Yume,

I would like to draw your attention to this proposed guideline. It may yet solve the problem of having to list – and source – all of the other languages' voice actors in the TMM articles.

Regards, G.A.S 22:32, 25 August 2007 (UTC)

Oh well. International adaptations of TMM is something I don't really care about anymore, just because I'm usually busy finding sources for things related to the original Japanese version and English adaptations... 夢の騎士Yume no Kishi - Talk

RE:

Its really bugging me, especailly when the Iper 69. something who has been around the TMM articles steps in, cause that person already knows what we edited, and why..

"Maybe it's better to remove the Mews' ages altogether and just mention their grades instead? "

I have a feeling when we do that, a random IPer (or not) will add them back, and may add the wrong ages, then we'll revert, then this happens for weeks...Ugh..THROUGH FIRE JUSTICE IS SERVED! 01:46, 1 October 2007 (UTC)

EDIT: I think I may have to do with why the Japanese wikipedia removed the ages. I added the "citation needed" tag ( {{要出典}} ), to see where they got the ages from; it was around the time when the ages were constantly changed here. An established user named Pr3, then changed it to their grades. I guess because there is no source saying their grades. They did the same thing we did; derive their ages from their grades. So...the most we could to is leave a footnote saying where thieir ages came from, and use that site I added to Pudding talk page, to prove it. 02:03, 1 October 2007 (UTC)

Character's articles // Update

Also refer to User talk:Yume no Kishi/Sandbox4. G.A.S 16:30, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

  • If we make as much of the "real world" information as we can, it should justify the articles.
  • Look at the main character articles of Sailor Moon and Oh My Goddess. The former does not seem to be in danger, it has at least some "real world" information, and a lot of them are good articles. The latter is in some danger, but if you look at the articles, they have no real world information whatsoever. Even in the latter's case, there is at least support to keep them as separate articles, provided real world information is added.
  • I guess it is a matter of if it sounds like a fansite, it goes.
  • Sincerely, G.A.S 06:09, 18 October 2007 (UTC)
