Thanks

Thanks for your feedback on the hooks for both Victoria Regina and Forbidden Area. It's been a few years since I was active in DYK, and the "hookiness" part is a bit of an art. Your prodding teased out much better hooks in both of these cases. Cbl62 (talk) 15:16, 1 October 2020 (UTC)

DYK for The Ghost and the Guest

On 3 October 2020, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article The Ghost and the Guest, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that The Ghost and the Guest is one in a long line of Hollywood films that validate skepticism about paranormal activity by depicting "a haunted house that is not truly haunted"? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/The Ghost and the Guest. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, The Ghost and the Guest), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Kirya Ne'emana

Hi, I know it's been a long time since you created the article, but maybe you can remember what it's about. I have a basic question: how is it distinct from Musrara? Or was it just a part of Musrara, but with a different character (Jewish & Sephardic)? Thank you, Arminden (talk) 18:21, 3 October 2020 (UTC)

@Arminden: Hi again! Kirya Ne'emana was not part of Musrara at all. Are you familiar with the Bar Lev highway? As you drive toward the Old City, Musrara is on your right side and Kirya Ne'emana was on the left side. Some of the buildings at the eastern end of Rechov HaNeviim are said to be former buildings of Kirya Ne'emana. Kirya Ne'emana and other small housing projects built in proximity to Damascus Gate were evacuated during the 1929 Arab riots. Best, Yoninah (talk) 19:03, 3 October 2020 (UTC)

Contribution to structure of Israeli government institutions

There is a subsection to a biographical page I just created that needs enhancement and citations. Perhaps you could advise me on archival sources. Marver Bernstein § Contribution to structure of Israeli government Many thanks. Zatsugaku (talk) 20:17, 3 October 2020 (UTC)

@Zatsugaku: All I use to research my articles is Google, Google Books, Jstor, and Newspapers.com. I guess you could try typing his name in Hebrew on Google and see what sources come up, though then you would have to translate them. Yoninah (talk) 20:28, 3 October 2020 (UTC)
Thank you for the suggestion. I just gave that a few tries and got one vintage Knesset document; it is a generic scan/image PDF so I’ll hustle someone who reads Hebrew to check it. I will also try talk on some of related institutional pages; page watchers may be familiar with accessing archives. Zatsugaku (talk) 21:12, 3 October 2020 (UTC)

@Gerda Arendt: well, your hook is already at 190 characters. And it's hooky, so I put it in the quirky slot. When people click on it they'll learn more about him, right? Yoninah (talk) 22:15, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
Sorry for not being clear: I meant the lead that you changed, not the hook. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:16, 7 October 2020 (UTC)

Alma Vessells John

Was just promoted to GA if you think she is interesting enough for DYK. If you choose her it'd be lovely to have a photo slot. Thanks for all you do. It is very much appreciated. SusunW (talk) 14:48, 4 October 2020 (UTC)

@SusunW: How could What's Right with Teens be produced by John and produced and directed by teens? Yoninah (talk) 21:55, 6 October 2020 (UTC)
It was a program that she produced as a mentoring project for teens. She supervised their work and though they did all the actual work of preparing the show so they could learn how to do it, but she was responsible for producing it. Garland said she let them do it, thus, clearly they had no responsibility to do it. Does that make sense? SusunW (talk) 22:05, 6 October 2020 (UTC)
@SusunW: Yes. OK, here are some hook ideas:
Yes, I know, its a pain in the back. Fulton History went down on September 25th and hasn't been back up since. I had several articles I was going to use from the New York Amsterdam News, but I couldn't access them after that date. Very frustrating. Either of those work and the source may just have to be AGF. Or perhaps "that while working to desegregate nursing in the US, Alma Vessells John, wrote a radio show that sparked a second career in radio and television?" You know I am good with anything you suggest. I am going off line to prepare for the hurricane and no idea when I'll be able to come back. SusunW (talk) 22:34, 6 October 2020 (UTC)
@SusunW: what hurricane?
You need to get someone to archive the page for you. The people at the Help desk helped me do that before a certain website went offline. Yoninah (talk) 22:38, 6 October 2020 (UTC)
I had no idea the site was going off line. I was trying to save it in wayback when I discovered that it was down. I really must go, we need to pack up our perishables. Delta is scheduled to make landfall on the Yucatan Peninsula this evening. Everything is shutting down by 6 p.m. SusunW (talk) 22:42, 6 October 2020 (UTC)
@SusunW: OK. Good luck to you! Yoninah (talk) 22:46, 6 October 2020 (UTC)
Thank you! All good. We've been here 10 years and never had the government issue a warning to businesses and residents, so we figured it must be serious. As it played out, a lot of preparations and we got lucky. Here, no wind and only light rain. The Quintana Roo side got hit hard and I am sure there will be flooding in the pueblos between them and us, but other than one roof leak, we are safe and snug. DYK for Hearts in Bondage

On 5 October 2020, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Hearts in Bondage, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. DYK clarification, please

Hi Yoninah, I'm confused at this point about Template:Did you know nominations/2020 United States Supreme Court vacancy. I reviewed/ticked approved this DYK nom on Sept. 21 (which met my QPQ review requirement for the Titanic International Society DYK in upcoming Queue 3). Is my review now nullified and a new one needed? Or is evrik now the reviewer since he's ticked it approved? If so, does this adversely affect my QPQ requirement for Titanic?  JGHowes  talk 12:41, 6 October 2020 (UTC)

@JGHowes: no, you still get a QPQ for your review of 2020 United States Supreme Court vacancy, which was moved to Amy Coney Barrett Supreme Court nomination. But since feminist added a second article to the hook, that article needs a review too. Feminist suggested a new, double hook (ALT6 and ALT7) and evrik improved on it with ALT8. Feminist is okay with ALT8. We now need a review of the second article, White House COVID-19 outbreak. If you'd like to do that for another QPQ, it would be appreciated. Best, Yoninah (talk) 12:51, 6 October 2020 (UTC)

Ottoman "High School for Political Science"?!

Hi Yoninah. Do you have any clue where this pre-1900 "High School for Political Science" could be? Is it still standing? One can see the Dome of the Rock, I guess the city wall (or the Haram's?), a small bell tower as part of the wall right left of the "high school". And hills which are - what? I can only tell they're not the Mount of Olives. Maybe the photo is flipped (left-right)? But that was typical for daguerreotypes, and this is a more modern type of photo. I tried, and it still doesn't help. I thought it's maybe in the area of St Anne's, but nothing fits. Mystery, and it bugs me. Thanks, Arminden (talk) 12:58, 6 October 2020 (UTC)

Taneko Suzuki

I found it fascinating that she created a product out of fish that tasted like and had the texture of beef. Just took her live if you think that would make a good hook. SusunW (talk) 19:29, 8 October 2020 (UTC)

Also just finished today (10-10) Danièle Aron-Rosa perhaps something like "...that French painter, Genskof, is a world-renowned pioneer in laser eye surgery?" Or something like that. If you don't have time or think it isn't hooky, no worries. SusunW (talk) 19:11, 10 October 2020 (UTC)

Did you know that the Cleveland School fire took place the day the school was to permanently close?

I didn't want to bring this up on the DYK template out of fear of cluttering up the page. I added new information to the article. I was wondering if a hook that mentioned how the fire took place the day the school was scheduled to close permanently would suffice. I know you're going to be offline soon, but I wanted to bring this up before I do the same. Scorpions13256 (talk) 00:21, 9 October 2020 (UTC)

@Scorpions13256: that sounds interesting! Yoninah (talk) 00:25, 9 October 2020 (UTC)
@Scorpions13256: You added the part about the closure to the article, but it doesn't have an inline cite. The encyclopedia source says May 17 was graduation day. Yoninah (talk) 00:28, 9 October 2020 (UTC)
The information is in the WITX news article though. but yes, the encyclopedia source doesn't say that. Should I change the location of the reference, or is the news source not reliable enough? Scorpions13256 (talk) 00:37, 9 October 2020 (UTC)
I also found something in the May 23, 2010 edition of the Item. I hope the wording is clear enough for others to interpret the source the way I did. [1]. Just in case you don't have access to the site, it says One of the ironies of the evening centered on the news that the existing Cleveland School had been condemned and was scheduled to be closed for good after the graduation exercises. It also says that people were assembling for the commencement play. I understand that you are away for a couple of days, but I wanted to share the source for when you came back. I may post on your talk page one more time at the most if I can find more sources though. You've been a great help. Scorpions13256 (talk) 11:09, 9 October 2020 (UTC)
Wow. I already found another source. [2]. This one is a lot more explicit. It says Last night was to have been the last use of the structure as a school building. I hope at least of these sources suffice. I'll leave you alone for now. I just find all of this really exciting. Scorpions13256 (talk) 11:17, 9 October 2020 (UTC)
@Scorpions13256: Hi, I'm glad you found more sources. Please take the time to improve and expand your article with more information and detail, so readers will find a more well-rounded article when they see it on the main page. Yoninah (talk) 11:35, 9 October 2020 (UTC)
Oh I see. So it probably isn't eligible for DYK at the moment? I'll see what I can do. I had a feeling before I submitted the article that it wasn't good enough. The way our past conversations went made it seem that I was very close. I'll take this as a learning experience. If I've interpreted your last comment correctly, I'll withdraw the nomination. I'm a bit busy with school, and I'm unsure if I'll be able to expand the article in time. Cheers. Scorpions13256 (talk) 11:52, 9 October 2020 (UTC)
@Scorpions13256: No, I didn't mean that at all. The article is presently start-class, which is fine for DYK. As long as the hook fact is verified and cited inline, and all the paragraphs are properly cited, it's fine for DYK. I'll do the review tomorrow night when I have a clearer head. Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 13:17, 9 October 2020 (UTC)
Thank you so much for everything you've done. I admire your patience in dealing with my inexperience. I will replace the article's image with the more HD version. I just need to learn how to turn it sideways (I was just getting ready to do this). This shouldn't take long. Also, I do like the hook you suggested. I was going to suggest something similar, but I was concerned with the grammar. I also removed the questionable claim you mentioned because I couldn't find any more reliable sources myself. And today Alba Roballo passed. Perhaps something about politician was also an award-winning poet? But totally it's up to you. No worries if you are too busy. SusunW (talk) 17:40, 18 October 2020 (UTC)

@SusunW: how about:
  • ... that four-term Uruguyan Senator Alba Roballo was also a poet who explored her anxiety, pain, and fatigue with social conditions, as well as her deep love for her homeland, in her writing?
  • But I need an inline cite in the article (I noted the place), and the verifying sentence from the source, even if it's in Spanish. Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 21:05, 18 October 2020 (UTC)
Senate to this "in 1958 she was elected to the Senate for the first time. She went on to win re-election in 1962, and again in 1966" and "Alba participó en el senado hasta 1993".[3]. Does that work? SusunW (talk) 21:32, 18 October 2020 (UTC)
@SusunW: let's try something else:
... that four-term Uruguyan Senator Alba Roballo was also an award-winning poet with a rebellious spirit?
But where did you find "rebellious spirit" in footnote 7? Yoninah (talk) 20:01, 20 October 2020 (UTC)
SusunW (talk) 21:25, 20 October 2020 (UTC)
I get that I don't write the kind of articles that are necessarily easy to find a hook in. I usually write about women whom I find interesting because they were active in social and political causes. I really do appreciate how hard you work to find something hooky in amongst my causes. You are awesome. SusunW (talk) 21:56, 20 October 2020 (UTC)

J.D. Tippit

Hello. Some of your edits about a month ago on J.D. Tippit's page appear to be problematic. Some info was added that appear to be Jim Garrison's take on certain witnesses and evidence without it being specifically attributed to him. As an example the statement is made: ...the gun found on Oswald at his arrest did not match the cartridges found at the scene.... That's very much someone's opinion because (both) the WC and the HSCA tied that gun and the cartridges to the shooting. Also, the point on "two different manufacturers" is fairly meaningless. That section needs proper attribution. ThanksRja13ww33 (talk) 03:25, 24 October 2020 (UTC)

@Rja13ww33: Starting with the words New Orleans district attorney Jim Garrison, who investigated the assassination of John F. Kennedy and brought evidence in his 1969 trial of businessman Clay Shaw, contended in his book... that whole section is attributed to footnote 47. Do you want a citation after every sentence? Yoninah (talk) 20:37, 24 October 2020 (UTC)
No but the section starts out with the attribution noted.....but then it goes on to present a lot of things as fact that are very much Garrison's opinion without it duly noted. Give me some time to think it over (I don't post much on the weekends).....and I may change the wording a bit. Thanks for getting back to me.Rja13ww33 (talk) 00:48, 25 October 2020 (UTC)
I made my changes. Let me know if you take issue with anything. I removed the part about Helen Markham being on a "witness stand". To my knowledge, she did not testify at any trial (including Garrison's trial of Shaw). She did (of course) testify to the WC. Regards.Rja13ww33 (talk) 22:37, 28 October 2020 (UTC)

Swimming in the Dark

Per Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Tomasz Jędrowski, consensus was to keep the article where it was. I was planning on writing a new article just about the book independent of the article.

Could you please return it where it was, and allow me to recreate the redirect? Thanks for considering! Gleeanon 22:43, 1 November 2020 (UTC)

@Gleeanon409: Hi, I'm all for writing a good article about the book. But the original article, about the author, only had 3 sentences about the author. If I revert it, I will leave only that 3-line stub.
As the article is now being considered for a main-page appearance at DYK, I think you should involve the original creator User:Nigetastic in your decision. Yoninah (talk) 23:04, 1 November 2020 (UTC)
Well first, a biography about him would certainly contain a section on his most notable work and appropriate feedback about how he writes.
Did Nigetastic want to move the article? They seemed ready to keep it where it was? Gleeanon 23:52, 1 November 2020 (UTC)
  • @Gleeanon409 and Yoninah:. Just had my first experience of edit conflict. Had pressed 'publish' on a reply but lost it. Will write again asap.
  • @Gleeanon409 and Yoninah: Hello again. Thank you both. You’ve both been very kind to me, and I’m learning the importance of small kindnesses in Wikipedia. I’m not sure what Wikipedia etiquette suggests in this situation, so forgive me if I get it wrong. In publishing—an environment of increasingly scarce time and resources—we’d observe that we have one good article in hand (Yoninah’s). It may not fit your vision, Gleeanon409, and I’m sorry if you invested time and effort in composing something in your mind or offline. But mightn’t we be efficient with our collective time and stet what we’ve got? Gleeanon409, there is still quite a lot more to say about the book. I’d be glad to mail you my copy if you have an “anonymized” snail mail address.Nigetastic (talk) 00:17, 2 November 2020 (UTC)
  • I just got done leaving a message at the DYK page! Oh well. I kind of prefer having two articles but if you prefer the one then sobeit.
Thank you for the offer of the book but when I write an article I only use information from the sources unless it’s basic dry information. Gleeanon 00:29, 2 November 2020 (UTC)
  • @Gleeanon409: I would have liked to see two articles, but if I had to re-write the author article to keep it there, I didn't have the fighting spirit to keep putting work out there for anonymous strangers or their sock puppets to needle me about. What this experience illuminated for me is that most Wikipedians are wonderful people. But as with office politics, the bad ones can occupy a lot of psychic space. My library has been feeding me some interesting stuff, underserved stories with decent documentation and cool Creative Commons pics. But thank you for taking an interest in this. I liked Garth Greenwell's 'Cleanness' but LGBTQ writing has come a long way in the past 30-40 years. Try it. Thanks. Nigetastic (talk) 01:23, 2 November 2020 (UTC)
  • @Nigetastic:, I totally understand. Take care of yourself, take breaks when needed, and good luck! I found about 30 sources for the book, half are pretty good. Would you like me to post on the talk page of the book? Gleeanon 01:50, 2 November 2020 (UTC)

DYK for Over the Hill (1931 film)

On 2 November 2020, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Over the Hill (1931 film), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that for her sound-film debut in 1931, silent-screen star Mae Marsh begged the director to tell her what to say before each scene? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Over the Hill (1931 film). You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Over the Hill (1931 film)), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Your GA nomination of Jane Withers

The article Jane Withers you nominated as a good article has passed  ; see Talk:Jane Withers for comments about the article. Well done! If the article has not already appeared on the main page as a "Did you know" item, or as a bold link under "In the News" or in the "On This Day" prose section, you can nominate it within the next seven days to appear in DYK. Bolded names with dates listed at the bottom of the "On This Day" column do not affect DYK eligibility. Daisy Yen Wu

This one was just approved as a GA if you think it would be good for DYK. I have another that was also picked up today. No worries if you are too busy or you don't think it is a good candidate. I appreciate you. SusunW (talk) 18:25, 3 November 2020 (UTC)

@SusunW: I'm having trouble figuring out a hook here, not the least because the source is in Chinese. (How did you do that?) I could start: ... that Daisy Yen Wu, believed to be the first female biochemical researcher in China... but what do you want to feature? The part about their work being foundational is interesting, but then I have to add in her husband. BTW I felt you were talking too much about her children in section after section. Yoninah (talk) 22:38, 5 November 2020 (UTC)
Let me think on this one, it is hard because he published her research as his own, she was forced out of her job, etc. etc. I'll look at the other one first. SusunW (talk) 23:44, 5 November 2020 (UTC)
... that Daisy Yen Wu, believed to be the first female biochemical researcher in China, became interest in studying nutrition while attending Teachers College, Columbia University? That would highlight something she did without him. The first part is in the English abstract "As the first woman in China doing research on biochemistry and nutrition" and the nutrition part is "秋季,入哥伦比亚大学,在著名食物化学和营养权威谢尔曼(Henry C.Sherman,1875—1955年)和罗斯(Mary Swartz Rose)的指导下从事食物化学和营养的研究,特别是维生素的研究工作。当时维生素的研究在国际上尚处起步不久阶段,在严彩韵随谢尔曼从事研究时,人们已经发现并认识的只有维生素A、B、D。美国学者在维生素研究上处于领先地位[4],食物中维生素含量的定量生物学分析方法就是后来由谢尔曼发展而来的[5]。严彩韵心灵手巧,善于学习,在谢尔曼的实验室工作得非常出色 ..."[4]

Or possibly ... that Daisy Yen Wu, believed to be the first female biochemical researcher in China, helped establish the new field of nutrition at the Peking Union Medical College? Same source "在与吴宪共同研究蛋白质变性问题的同时,严彩韵还发挥了其在美国留学时所学的专长,在系里开辟了营养研究这一新的研究领域。" Obviously, you can tweak those any way you want or do something else entirely. SusunW (talk) 00:14, 6 November 2020 (UTC)

@SusunW: the second hook is good but I don't see it in the article. Do you have a cite for this sentence in the article? Yen Wu conducted her own studies on nutrition, believed to be the first studies carried out by a woman in China. Yoninah (talk) 19:00, 7 November 2020 (UTC)
I think it is in the article, led the biochemical department at Peking Union Medical College to prioritize studying nutrition, but it can obviously always be tweaked. As for the cite on her own studies, it's from the same link above: "严彩韵应是目前所知的最早在国内从事营养研究的女性。了解到有关中国食物成份的科学数据极为有限,严彩韵从对中国食物的化学组成和营养价值的分析入手,开展了营养问题的研究。" SusunW (talk) 19:33, 7 November 2020 (UTC)
@SusunW: Regarding that last cite, if she was China's first nutritional researcher, why are you calling her the country's first female biochemical researcher? Yoninah (talk) 19:46, 7 November 2020 (UTC)
Because the source also says "As the first woman in China doing research on biochemistry and nutrition". SusunW (talk) 19:48, 7 November 2020 (UTC)
@SusunW: I hate working with foreign languages! Please show me the exact, cited sentence in the article and tell me what the source says for that last statement. Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 19:52, 7 November 2020 (UTC)
I'm sorry, I am not following the question. My mind is elsewhere today. I changed the article sentence to read Yen Wu conducted her own research on nutrition for the biochemistry department, believed to be the first studies carried out by a woman in China. Is that what you mean? The quote from the source is in English — in the abstract. I honestly appreciate how hard you work on these. I know it isn't easy. SusunW (talk) 20:05, 7 November 2020 (UTC)

And the other one just passed Leda Valladares, if you're interested. SusunW (talk) 23:24, 3 November 2020 (UTC)

@SusunW: for this I was thinking of:
ALT1: ... that Leda Valladares produced a "Musical Map of Argentina" to document her country's folk music traditions? But it's not clear from the article that this was a series of albums; from the way you wrote it, it sounds like a film series.
Or for our primarily American readers:
ALT2: ... that Charlie Chaplin and Pablo Picasso were among the guests at performances given by Argentinian folk musician Leda Valladares in Paris? -- But where is the source for that?
Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 23:02, 5 November 2020 (UTC)
I added documentary series of albums, as indeed they were musical recordings and not films. On alt2 (but wouldn't the first be 0 and this one 1?)
I'll try to check back tonight, but it may be tomorrow. Got a sick kitty I need to tend to. SusunW (talk) 00:22, 6 November 2020 (UTC)
@SusunW: I got too tired to think about this anymore. I'll be back Saturday night. Yoninah (talk) 00:32, 6 November 2020 (UTC)

DYK hook {{Did you know nominations/Charles/MGH station}}

Hello Yoninah, I think this hook should be improved upon, as it is pretty much meaningless to the average reader, as it stands. Instead of saying, ".. that Blue and Red are proposed to meet at Charles/MGH station?", it would be much clearer if it said:

"... that Boston's Blue and Red Lines are proposed to meet at Charles/MGH station?"  JGHowes  talk 23:29, 8 November 2020 (UTC)
@JGHowes: OK, I'll tweak it. Yoninah (talk) 23:31, 8 November 2020 (UTC)

Did You Know? nomination for Royal Space Force

Hi! Yoninah, thank you for your review of this nomination. I looked at the phrase "What was described as the world premiere of the film occurred at an event held in the United States on February 19, 1987 at Mann's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood" and noticed that citation 180 had been positioned right after "world premiere of the film." However this same citation (Matsushita 1987 pp. 31-32) also documents the information that this premiere was held at on February 19, 1987 at Mann's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood so I went ahead and moved the position of citation 180 from its previous point to after "on February 19, 1987 at Mann's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.”

I would be fine with your suggestion of changing "was marketed in Japan by staging a Hollywood premiere" to "was marketed in Japan by means of a Hollywood premiere" but to explain why I used the phrase, the reader will see cited in the article under the Marketing section that there were questionable aspects to this premiere, that it wasn't really the same version of the film that would later go into wide release in Japan but a renamed and to an important extent rewritten dub titled "Star Quest". That was why I used "staging" because it has the meanings of both putting on an event and doing it for the purpose of creating a certain impression (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/staging). Thanks again!Iura Solntse (talk) 01:15, 16 November 2020 (UTC)
