Exserohilum - Make into a informative and functional page.
The Exserohilum page is barren. I wish to build it into something that attracts readers. My primary objective is to get it functional. As a WikiProject, I think a kickstart is what this page needs. I wish to mimic the structure of other more popular fungi/plants to make the page presentable. This page could help motivate development the fungi pages in general as it is all lacking in comparison to other living organisms. Particularly after seeing how my other 2 proposals receive more attention, I decided that I should definitely help pull and pool interest into the page.

Exserohilum is a genus of fungi in the Pleosporaceae family.[1] Species include Exserohilum curvisporum.
Morphology edit
Exserohilum is an asexual organism that reproduces through spores. These one-celled reproductive units are concave and can be seen in the suspensor. [2]
Colonies are grey to blackish-brown, suede-like to floccose in texture, and have an olivaceous black reverse. Conidia are straight, curved or slightly bent, ellipsoidal to fusiform and are formed apically through a pore (poroconidia) on a sympodially elongating geniculate conidiophore. Conidia have a strongly protruding, truncate hilum and the septum above the hilum is usually thickened and dark. The end cells are often paler than the other cells and the walls are often finely roughened. Conidial germination is bipolar.

Exserohilum is commonly found in soil and on plants, especially grasses, and thrives in warm and humid climates. [3]
Taxonomy edit
Exserohilum species are prevalent in nature and closely associated to Drechslera and Bipolaris. [4]
The genus Exserohilum may be differentiated from the closely related genera Bipolaris and Drechslera by forming conidia with a strongly protruding truncate hilum (i.e. exserted hilum). The hilum is defined as "a scar on a conidium at the point of attachment to the conidiophore". In Drechslera species, the hilum does not protrude whereas in Bipolaris species the hilum protrudes only slightly. (needs rephrasing) [5]
Clinical significance edit
Exserohilum is a very rare cause of infection in people, but it has been known to cause several different types of infections, including infection in the skin or the cornea (the clear, front part of the eye), which are typically due to skin or eye trauma. Exserohilum can also cause more invasive forms of infection in the sinuses, lungs, lining of the heart, and bone, which are thought to be more likely to occur in people with weak immune systems. Like other fungal infections, Exserohilum infections cannot be transmitted from person to person. (needs rephrasing) [6]
Several species have been reported as agents of phaeohyphomycosis, notably E. rostratum (= E. halodes), E. meginnisii and E. longirostratum. Clinical manifestations include mycotic keratitis, subcutaneous phaeohyphomycosis, endocarditis, osteomyelitis and sinusitis in both normal and immunosuppressed patients. (needs rephrasing) [7]
Exserohilum rostratum has been identified as one of the predominant pathogens in the multistate outbreak of fungal meningitis and other fungal infections associated with contaminated steroid injections. (needs rephrasing) [8]
