Demeaning?

Hi Yid. I haven't had the opportunity to edit many pages on contemporary persons, so may not be up to speed on what counts as best practice. Still, I find non-contextual racial/heritage information to be essentially demeaning, in that it allows the reader to use cliche thinking to categorize the individual and his/her heritage.

Example: Joe Blow, an Irish American, invented the kazoo. vs Joe Blow invented the kazoo.

OR

Joe Blow was an Irish American serial killer. vs Joe Blow was a serial killer.

I have no problem with

Joe Blow was an Irish American humorist who specialized in retelling Irish folktales. OR Joe Blow was an Irish American chef who won the Irish Culinary Institute Gold Award for best boxty.

as this provides a context for the person's field of activity.

Jewish-American as relates to Abe Burrows article is to my thinking irrelevant.

I call irrelevant heritage information essentially demeaning because such adjectives suggest that there are, for example, "ALL" inventors and some sort of subclass of "Irish-American" inventors. Demeaning because the adjective suggests that Joe Blow shouldn't be considered as part of "ALL" inventors or compared with "Non-Irish-American" inventors.

Further demeaning because it suggests that one's heritage is essentially defining, and to be associated with one in perpetuity. How is Joe ever to be free of that Irish-American label, once it is applied? Whether he wants to be part of that group or not, OTHERS have defined him so, and it not for any act on his part.

I assume from your username that you are a Proud Jew, and I would certainly understand that you wish to extend your pride to Mr Burrows by noting his participation in that heritage of which you are (justly) proud (or so it would seem from your username).

I'm an old coot, not a youngster like most of the wiki editors, and grew up through times when becoming aware of the subtlety and pervasiveness of racist thinking was a hard-fought personal battle. Before the PC police existed, individuals had to face the nature of racist language and thinking as individuals, and come to their own conclusions. I came to these conclusions independently, and have tried to live by my conclusions as best I can.

Thanks for your answer. Good to find careful thinking by well-intentioned and thoughtful editors.

I think Jewish American is ENTIRELY appropriate re: Sholom Aleichem for example. Wish that excellent example had occurred to me.

Also I think you raise a good point that some information, e.g, Jewish-American, might seem more appropriate in later paragraphs than as in the opening sentence. I think I might have a peek at the George Washington Carver article, for example. He was notable not because he was Afro-american, but because he was a first-class scientist at a time when few Afro-americans were educated, let alone scientists, and his achievements served to change attitudes toward Afro-americans. I DON'T think that he should be called an "Afro-american" in the first sentence.

I work on a number of articles about India, and I'm really troubled by Hindu/Muslim revert wars. See Aurangzeb history for some intense activity. Also that Hindu is being used as a replacement for Indian or Indio-. For example a lot of discussion about changing the name of article Arabic numerals to Hindu-Arabic numerals. Like they were made by persons of a religion, not of a geographic area.

Compromise on DCV and an apology

In recent days I have grown disgusted with Deeceevoice's comments and actions. As a result, I am withdrawing my support of her. That said, Justforasecond has behaved very poorly throughout this entire affair but more so in recent days, placing comments on DCV's talk page merely to stir up trouble. As such, I am proposing that both DCV and JFAS be placed on personal attack parole for a year at [1] Perhaps this is a compromise that a majority of the parties involved could agree to. i put the comment about deeceevoice's experience because the arbitrators are hinting that her behavior might be due to her poor understanding of policy (on the /Proposed Decision subpage). 10,000 edits is enough for someone to be an experience user...and anyway, many people have told her about the policies.

Why do so many people fail to realize such truthful and powerful logic?

Matthew, I want you to read this carefully:

An Atheist Professor of philosophy speaks to his class on the problem science has with God, The Almighty.

He asks one of his new students to stand and.....

Prof: So you believe in God?

Student: Absolutely, sir.

Prof: Is God good?

Student: Sure.

Prof: Is God all-powerful?

Student: Yes.

Prof: My brother died of cancer even though he prayed to God to heal him. Most of us would attempt to help others who are ill. But God didn't. How is this God good then? Hmm?

(Student is silent.)

Prof: You can't answer, can you? Let's start again, young fella. Is God good?

Student: Yes.

Prof: Is Satan good?

Student: No.

Prof: Where does Satan come from?

Student: From...God...

Prof: That's right. Tell me son, is there evil in this world?

Student: Sir, you can have lots of heat, even more heat, superheat, mega heat, white heat, a little heat or no heat. But we don't have anything called cold. We can hit 458 degrees below zero which is no heat, but we can't go any further after that.There is no such thing as cold. Cold is only a word we use to describe the absence of heat. We cannot measure cold. Heat is energy. Cold is not the opposite of heat, sir, just the absence of it.

(There is pin-drop silence in the lecture theatre.)

Student: What about darkness, Professor? Is there such a thing as darkness?

Prof: Yes. What is night if there isn't darkness?

Student: You're wrong again, sir. Darkness is the absence of something. You can have low light, normal light, bright light, flashing light.... But if you have no light constantly, you have nothing and it's called darkness, isn't it? In reality, darkness isn't. If it were, you would be able to make darkness darker, wouldn't you?

Prof: So what is the point you are making, young man?

Student: Sir, my point is your philosophical premise is flawed.

Prof: Flawed? Can you explain how?

Student: Sir, you are working on the premise of duality. You argue there is life and then there is death, a good God and a bad God. You are viewing the concept of God as something finite, something we can measure. Sir, science can't even explain a thought. It uses electricity and magnetism, but man has never seen, much less fully understood either one. To view death as the opposite of life is to be ignorant of the fact that death cannot exist as a substantive thing. Death is not the opposite of life: just the absence of it. Now tell me, Professor. Do you teach your students that they evolved from a monkey?

Prof: If you are referring to the natural evolutionary process, then yes, of course I do.

Student: Have you ever observed evolution with your own eyes, sir?

(The Professor shakes his head with a smile, beginning to realize where the argument is going.)

Student: Since no one has ever observed the process of evolution at work and cannot even prove that this process is an on-going endeavour, are you not teaching your own opinion, sir? Are you not a preacher rather than a scientist?

(The class is in uproar)

Student: Is there anyone in the class who has ever seen the Professor's brain?

(The class breaks out into laughter)

Student: Is there anyone here who has ever heard the Professor's brain, felt it, touched or smelled it? No one appears to have done so. So, according to the established rules of empirical, stable, demonstrable protocol, science says that you have no brain, sir. With all due respect, sir, how do we then trust your lectures, sir?

Prof: I guess you'll have to take them on faith, son.

By the way, I added our new and improved Gahr music department site to the 'External Links' section. ...Ok its not THAT great. Category:Jewish States

Hi Yid613: Perhaps you are not aware that one should not empty a category that has been voted for deletion because that is the job of the closing admin who tallies the vote and certifies the vote as "Delete". If you read the wording on the delete template it states "Please do not empty the category or remove this notice while the discussion is in progress" which applies until the last admin does his job by deleting the category which will then be automatically deleted from all pages that it was linked to. It is best to follow this protocol, even if it takes a little more time, so that no technicalities can be dredged up to oppose the deletion. The correct procedure is to contact the admin who closed the debate and "certified" the vote to delete, or even another admin who was not involved with the vote, to complete the process by finally deleting it. Category:Conductors

Hi. I see you have added the category conductors to the Opera Project page. Perhaps I should explain that all the categories listed here are opera categories in the sense that they are subcategories of opera. There are lots of relevant music categories, however we are not listing them on the Opera Project. If you wanted to start an opera conductors category it would be part of the opera tree, although having a single conductors category under music seems perfectly OK to me.

Would you mind if we removed the conductors category from the Opera Project page?

Yiddish Operettas

Hello. Glad to see that you're taking an active interest in the Opera Project.

One of the things I did while contributing to the Opera Corpus was to combine the List of operettas with the works in Category:Operettas in order to try to produce a comprehensive list of what had already been done in this area. (Since then, a whole lot of operettas have been added to the List, sigh!, but that's by the way.)

Anyway, as well as deciding that The Swing Mikado didn't really fit, I omitted the three operettas of Abraham Goldfaden that were listed (Schmendrik, Breindele Cossack and The Witch of Botosani), because, reading about them and about Goldfaden, and looking at the Yiddish theatre article, they (and he) seemed rather too off-centre and specialised for the Corpus - plus Schmendrik and Breindele Cossack are apparently lost, and it looks as if that may also apply to The Witch of Botosani.

Do you know anything about this neck of the woods? Any idea of the extent to which Yiddish operettas resemble(d) Viennese/French/wherever operettas? Are they always performed - if they still are performed - in Yiddish to Yiddish-speaking audiences or are they ever translated? Should any be included in the Corpus?

Partly I'm just curious, but partly I feel slightly guilty about my unilateral decision. Chinese opera has also been omitted, but I think that's a rather different case. Any help gratefully received!

While you're there, I notice that you also signed up for the Classical Music Project. Looking at the Project page and its rather elderly Talk page, I'm rather inclined to delete all reference to opera there and to put in a link to the Opera Project instead - there's one from Opera to CM but not vice-versa - as Viajero suggested at the top of the Talk (but no-one addressed his/her question). I don't think I articulated the point clearly enough on the talk page. I have no idea whether nashooz refers to wife disobedience or not. My bringing it up on the talk page was not meant assert that it does refer to disobedience. It was meant to imply that since there are both Muslims who believe that it does refer to disobedience (as I proved with the link to the website) and others (like you) who believe it doesn't (or as you have clarified above, that it doens't necessarily). Therefore, if I edited the article to state that these two interpretations exist within the Muslim community, changing the current version, which says definitively (and rather POV) that it doesn't necessarily refer to disobedience, would you be ok with that? Personally I can't think of any reason why one would object. Since I have proved with the link and your comments that both views exist, I think the article should make it clear that both views exist. Hi Yid613, I hope you are having a good week, too. GOOD LUCK on your exams. Please don't stress out responding immediately and just focus on your school work. I appreciate the discussions too. I have learned a lot from talking to Christians and am really interested to learn more from Jews. It will be useful for me and moreover I can transfer this knowledge to my Muslim friends. It is clear that Muslim countries should undergo some kind of reform. Theoretically, Muslims respect the bible and admit that it is very useful to be read, however they don’t traditionally study it. The Muslim countries are religious anyway and I think if any kind of reform wants to happen, it should start from the religious community. I think studying Bible will clarify to them many things. That is the only way I feel I can serve my people.

I saw your first comments. Honestly, I didn’t want to refute an argument that you didn't make. I am sorry if you felt like that. I’ll write my answer after you are done with your comments. It was partly because of our different definitions of believe and partly because I wanted to clarify what “not believing” in Islam means. I’ll write it down in more details. The other thing, I would like to apologize is that I realized that I don’t insert enough information in my comments. For example, in the case of the word eaman, which literaly means “to become secure”. I should have included more information. Sorry about that. I take the meaning for granted. I’ll write my understanding of the term later but briefly I THINK it means becoming secure of the wrath of God. By the way, thanks for your comment of “Will I be doomed to hell if I don't believe in Hinduism?” Maybe that is the feeling that I have because of being a Muslim. Criticism of Islam page

Re my edit [2]. I generally agree with you. The whole article is pretty poor. It is my experience that removing whole paragraphs generally gets a revert response on pages like this, so I'm going through and just taking out the most glaring problems first. When we've established good faith, we can work of the difficult bits (that's my strategy anyway).

The bit I took out is totally unsourced and not very helpful (IMO). I agree the quote isn't terribly logical either, but at least it is an actual quote. The section is 'Responses to...' so I think it should just report what the standard responses are. More on Categories

Hello, Yid. You've made some constructive contributions in category making, but as stated above categories like Category:Jewish composers and songwriters are slightly redundant (not to mention bulking up the subject article pages). My suggestion would be to move all composers into Category:Jewish classical musicians and all songwriters/mainstream musicians into Category:Jewish musicians, then have Category:Jewish composers and songwriters either be speedily deleted or renamed into something else. I'll help with the moving if you agree. Antidote

That's fine with me. I'm sorry for all the mess. However, most of the names are either on Category:Jewish classical musicians or Category:Jewish musicians. So I'll just look through each name, if it's not in the other category and remove it from Jewish composers and songwriters, and if it is just remove it from Jewish composers and songwriters. Yid, please don't delete the songwriters and composers cat as I meant to create it myself. The problem is that people who were really mainly songwriters or composers are also listed in the Classical musicians category. When I created the classical musician cat I fully intended to create the composer/songwriter cat. There is no reason to delete it at all. I originally had the composers and songwriters in the classical cat as it was originally "Jews in music" and when it changed to classical musicians the composers/songwriters didn't quite fit. Well, we can do the following:

Idea A) Make a Category:Jewish composers and simply put all the composers in there. Then change the Category:Jewish classical musicians into only including classical musicians (violinists etc). As for songwriters...isn't a songwriter a musician? That would just go into Category:Jewish musicians. Category:Jewish composers and songwriters is a weird combination. Technically both Neil Diamond and Arnold Schoenberg belong in that category. How about just renaming Category:Jewish composers and songwriters to Category:Jewish composers??? Hey, sorry for the delay. I more or less agree with the proposal above. On one hand, the reason why I created the composers and songwriters category was because I saw that composers and performers were grouped together in Category:Jewish classical musicians and that there was a need to be more specific. On the other hand, it makes sense to say that people should not be in more than one of these categories but only the one to which they are most noted for or worked the most as. Since this is in encyclopedia, every subject that is worthy of an article has to have a certain level of significance, and for people such as musicians it means they have a certain level of accomplishment (feel free to correct this sentence if it is wrong). Therefore, a composer may have played an instrument, but if he is not known for that but rather for his work as a composer, there is no real reason to include him in both a composer category and a classical musicians category. I admit that the composer/songwriter combination is wierd. Granted, there are some people, such as George Gershwin, Kurt Weill, and Jerome Kern, who could be called both. But I have no problem with the above proposal to change the category to "Jewish composers" and have "Jewish classical musicians" have only performers. Thank you both for your patience on this. Hi Yid613, Can you help with Dhimmi , and Jizya? Its one user, Pecher, who is insistent on POVing the article. There are some problems with his edits: 1. he is assuming that whatever some particular has scholars has said is a fact. Instead of writing them as the opinion of some scholar he writes it as a fact. 2. Some of his quotes are clearly wrong. For example, As a shia, I am well aware of the Shia ritual purity. I am also aware of the Qur'anic verse they use to prove their opinion and problems with that interpretation(some shia scholars have pointed that out). But he is quoting wrong statements from some scholar and pretends as they are facts; he also reverts my edits. 3. He is adding irrelevant material to the article without accepting them to be irrelevant (e.g. He has added the picture of Maimonides in the Dhimmi article. It seems that he should be a Jew.) First off, I apologize for the spam. You are receiving this message because you have indicated that you are in Southern California or interested in Southern California topics (either via category or WikiProject, or I happen to know personally).

I would like to invite you to the Los Angeles edition of Wikipedia:Wikipedia Loves Art, a photography scavenger hunt to be held at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) on Saturday, February 28, 2009, from 1:00 to 7:00 PM. All photos are intended for use in Wikipedia articles or on Wikimedia Commons. There will be a prize available for the person who gets the most photos on the list.

If you don't like art, why not come just to meet your fellow Wikipedians. Apparently, we haven't had a meetup in this area since June 2006!

Please make a note if you are traveling to the area (train or plane) and need transportation, which can probably be arranged via carpool, but we need time to coordinate.
