Judith Haspel

Thanks for adding that info about her death. I wasn't aware that she had passed and that my sources were out of date. As for her last name, she was far more famous as Deutsch but she seemed to prefer Haspel (her married name). There's no clear standard on what the article should be called. Air Canada Centre

Just a note, on your user page, you mention "it's like in the USA Toronto's court is called Air Canada Centre". Just a note that Toronto is not in the USA. You're off by one country, it's in Canada (hense the "Air Canada). Unless it was an attempt at humour, as you otherwise seem quite intelligent from what I've gleaned from your contributions (but then, all Wikipedians are!  :)

Re:Maccabi

I'm not denying that Rosso has Israeli citizenship, nor that the Israeli league considers him a native. However, the fact that he played internationally with Croatia and was born there must supercede any other nationality, in terms of soccer. You can make a note that he is an Israeli citizen in the article, but the Croatian tag should be beside his name in the squad list. Many players have citizenship from other countries, but this does not change the fact that their main nationality is the squad they have represented. --Thewanderer 13:35, 30 September 2006 (UTC)

I don't know what's the norm in this Wikipedia. In my opinion, since Rosso has played in Israel since 1996, has an Israeli citizenship and doesn't play for Croatia anymore he should have an Israeli flag, but I guess you should do the same thing which is done for other players who got a citizenship after having played for their original state's national team. ⌠Yellow up⌡ 14:53, 30 September 2006 (UTC)

Benny Sela etc

Can you summarize for me the argument(s) why Sela's name should not be listed at all in Mizrahi Jews? Is he not a Mizrahi Jew? Is your argument that he's not "distinguished?" In my opinion, he's not distinguished enough. Since he was trailed 6 years ago until he escaped prison nobody mentioned him, and since he was caught, again, nobody talks about him. In my opinion Ifeldman has an anti-Mizrahi ideology (which is not common in Israel) - he only adds criminals [1], and removes fair people who are not well-recognized. Those criminals (Amir, Vaanunu and Deri) are indeed distinguished so I didn't revert them, but it shows something about his motivation in editing this article. ⌠Yellow up⌡ 17:11, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

Hapoel Tel Aviv B.C.

It was moved there to be consistent with Hapoel Jerusalem B.C.. Plus, although only a few clubs have a B.C./מ.כ. on their badges (Jerusalem and Gilboa/Afula), it is included in their official names (notably Maccabi). They are also referred to as Hapoel Tel Aviv Basketball Club on a few websites including Ultras Hapoel (the official website was down when I checked it).

Additionally, having a difference in naming format between Hapoel Tel Aviv F.C. and Hapoel Tel Aviv (basketball) just looks silly! Number 57 11:46, 13 April 2007 (UTC)

Maccabi's official name is "Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv Basketball Club (1995) Ltd.". I don't know the English Wikipedia rules, so I won't argue with you. ⌠Yellow up⌡ 12:27, 13 April 2007 (UTC)

There aren't really any rules on the subject, but the standard is for football clubs to be XXXX F.C. (see Category:English football clubs), and so (to me at least) it would logically follow that basketball clubs would be B.C.. Nevertheless, it is not a hard and fast rule, so feel free to discuss it with me or NYC2TLV who has also been involved in editing Israeli sports teams articles. Number 57 12:56, 13 April 2007 (UTC)

Although I can put this in many subtle ways, I think the case here is that I need to be rather blunt. You don't just add FC or BC to any football club and basketball club articles. Most English football clubs actually do have FC in their official names which is why their articles are named as such - it isn't just something made up by wikipedia so different article names don't collide. This is exactly why you wouldn't move FC Barcelona to Barcelona F.C. just for consistency and the same with Real Madrid - you aren't gonna move it to Real Madrid CF (Club de Futbol) just for consistency's sake and you certainly aren't gonna move it to Real Madrid F.C. just because there's a basketball club also called Real Madrid. The article's name should be the name the club is mostly referred to as (or in the case where it collides with another name, the more notable one should take up the main article and the other one should be linked from the top of the former or from a disambiguation page). Please do not make up rules and naming conventions - football club articles aren't just randomly moved to X F.C. without giving any regard to the actual name of the club. Flag

I have nothing wrong with removing the flag, but I do have a little bit of a problem of saying that somebody born during the British Mandate was born in Israel. I think that it makes more sense to say that they were born during the British Mandate and think that it helps show that Jews were born there as well as Arabs before the state was created. A question

Why did you give up on the English Wikipedia? Surely your knowledge of Israeli sport is helpful? Also, if I understand your userpage, you are for spelling West Ham ווסטהאם rather than וסטהאם? If so, I must say I agree (I was taught that W is always וו nowadays by my teacher). Also, I don't understand your opinion on the Nokia arena - are you for or against using the sponsor name? Currently there is no Wikipedia guideline for the use of sponsor names in sports (teams, stadia etc), but I wish there was as I would like to move Luch-Energia Vladivostok to Luch Vladivostok!

Also, sorry to be a nudnik, but NYC2TLV is right about the flag thing - for people born in the Mandate era the flag should be used. Although it is firstly a naval ensign, it also became the generally recognised flag for the Mandate. I can't find an example right now, but there are some around of people born in countries that no longer exist having the flag of that country in their infobox. Number 57 22:29, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

Why did I give up? For many reasons: first of all, many articles, especially about Israel, lack NPOV. For example, Allegations of Israeli apartheid. Every sourced information can be added to any Wikipedia article even if it's not really objective. Second of all, there is too much bureaucracy and not enough common sense. There are hundreds of policy pages, etc. An example for the lack of common sense is the flag thing, I'll get to it. Third of all, there are too many articles about really unimportant things, i.e. the article RifRaf which passed an AfD. Fourth of all, too many articles have templates, such as unsourced info, disputed, POV, etc, and nobody seems to care. Fifth of all, I don't feel like I can make a change here at anything. For example I removed the Croatia flag from Giovanni Rosso in Maccabi Tel Aviv F.C. and replaced it with an Israeli flag but somebody kept adding it back, and I had to give up since I had nothing to do. Same thing goes for the user who wants to change the article about Vollach. He has documentation, etc, but he keeps getting reverted and has nothing to do.

About the flag, it's not true. Has it become the generally recognized flag for the Mandate? I have never seen it before I joined Wikipedia, and I live in Israel. When you search for "British mandate" in Google Images, you won't see the flag until the 7th page. The 7th page, a professional page, says that this is a "Civil Ensign", which is meant for "Private Use", so it should not be used in that instance. Besides, there is a difference between the British Mandate for Israel and the USSR control over Poland, for example. USSR had complete control over Poland while the British Mandate was a temporary state, and you cannot call the country "the British Mandate for Palestine", it's like calling it now "the Kadima-headed government which reigns Israel". Also when it's a sensitive issue, there is no reason to have that flag and call it that way.

About Nokia Arena, I changed my mind since then. About West Ham, it should have a double-V but I actually saw many other placed where it's spelt with one V. ⌠Yellow up⌡ 23:00, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

I can see what you mean about NPOV, though to be fair there is also a lot of POV pushing from pro-settler editors in political articles. I can see why the Rosso change was made, as he plays for Croatia (and being born there, it is his primary nationality), though it is a bit stupid that the template doesn't allow for dual nationality. There are too many POV/unsourced templates - many of them unwarranted in my opinion - but I just wish more editors would source their material, as adding a link to the article where they found the info is so easy. As for the flag thing, consider Lviv - in the 20th Century it was part of Austro-Hungary, Poland, USSR and Ukraine. I think that for people born in the city, you should keep the flag of the relevant country at the time; after all, they would have had citizenship from that country (with a note to say that the country is now in Ukraine). With regards to the Mandate Era, I believe it was commonly refered to as Palestine, or sometimes Mandate Palestine at the time, and unfortunately the flag is the best there is (other Mandates also had flags, e.g. Tanganyika, which had a great picture of a giraffe: ). There is a difference between living under an agreed reign such as USSR or Austro-Hungary and living under a mandate. For example the mandate flag wasn't raised in public schools etc, unlike the USSR flag. Only the British Police and the British government used the British flag. Also as you know, the UN or anyone else did not recognize any country called "Palestine" or "British Mandate for Palestine" (i.e. on November 29, 1947 I didn't here "Palestine - yes"). There was Great Britain, and the ones who were born here were not part of any state, although they had a citizenship. So you can't say somebody was born in the British Mandate. Besides, it's a sensitive issue, and the encyclopedia precision is not hurt when you say "Tel Aviv, Land of Israel" for example without the flag. About Rosso, he is playing for Maccabi as an Israeli. He pays 50% taxes and not less, and he doesn't take the place of a "foreigner". ⌠Yellow up⌡ 12:57, 17 April 2007 (UTC)
