Straw poll for selecting photos of the Indian cricket team for use in articles

edit

Yesterday, the YellowMonkey waddled down to Adelaide Oval and started clicking his camera furiously each time he saw something on two legs walking past in a blue shirt, ie, a member of the Indian cricket and its entourage. In some cases, multiple shots of the same subject were produced with an approximately similar level of photographic quality. Due to his deficiencies in photographic ability and his inability to work out how to control the buttons and the unwillingness of the Indians to stand still (or pose for contrived photos), the pictures have deficiencies, and various attempts of the same subject often have different types of deficiencies.

Now, the fun part is that everyone is welcome to help in selecting which picture is used in the respective player's article, and feel free to have a laugh and the random clickery of the monkey. Perhaps it is time to formulate a variant of the Infinite monkey theorem for cameras. No knowledge of cricket is particularly needed, especially since most are simple portraits and a fresh perspective from a person not familiar with the sport would be appreciated. Random observations about the Indian cricket team

edit
The factual content of this piece is totally true.

And so, one sunny day, the YellowMonkey waddled down to a cricket field to await the impending arrival of the Indian cricket team for some training before a match in the Commonwealth Bank ODI tournament. The day before, the cricket ground's office had promised the arrival of the team at 14:00. At 14:30 nothing. The security fellow tells the monkey that they won't be there until about 16:00 to 17:00. So, they must be still enjoying their nap. The monkey returns at 15:45, and spots two fellows in an Indian shirt, one batting and the other bowling. Dinesh Karthik, the spare wicket-keeper batsman, has arrived early and is toiling away against the leg spin of the fielding coach Robin Singh, while the rest are still cruising along. He looks to be concentrating heavily. About an hour later, a bus arrives through the back entrance. It appears that the Indians, not known for their physical stamina or running abilities, have been ferried, rather than walking 1 km from their hotel to the ground. The group walk off the bus and lethargically trot towards the dressing room. Sachin Tendulkar is nowhere to be seen. After moping around in the dressing room for about 15 minutes, most of the players find themselves on the playing field, for some fielding practice. Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh, often associated with attitude problems, wander along around ten minutes later. But where's Tendulkar? He comes along a while later, perhaps having tried to enter separately to avoid the throng. Nevertheless, he needn't have bothered. He isn't mobbed. The Indians run around in a square formation, while trying to throw balls at one another while catching another. They appear to be having a lark, and it would seem unlikely that a random passer-by would know that they are supposedly international athletes from the second ranked team in the world. The players seem more interested and amused by their colleagues' dropped catches and fumbles, of which there are many. As one does in training, one does in matches. Irfan Pathan however, is exempted from fielding practice. The managed has escorted him away to deal with the media. His team-mates, perhaps envious, heckle (most notably Suresh Raina) him while he is being led away. From the looks of things, Pathan appears to enjoy deflecting the media more than fielding. After about 20 minutes of catch, drop and giggle, the physio John Gloster calls the players to lean on the fence and bend over and do some stretches. The monkey parks himself directly in front of some of the players to take portrait snaps of them. Harbhajan doesn't stretch, he has his head up and is joking with Praveen Kumar, so the monkey obliges and takes a photo while some of the others are grimacing with their heads down. Nor is Sreesanth stretching. He is asking the kids in front of him about their weekend cricket match. At the end of the blue line, Sachin Tendulkar isn't even bothering to posture. He is leaning his back on the fence. Goodie. Another portrait of the Little Master. Perhaps that's why he gets so many leg strains. And then Gloster shuffles around, not bothering to tell some of the "seniors" to get cracking. And after about five minutes, the fitness activities. Unsurprisingly, there is no jogging session given the way they run in matches. And so they head down to the nets. Time for batting and bowling. Robin Uthappa walks at the bowlers. Munaf Patel ambles in without appearing to be exerting. Piyush Chawla flights the ball; Harbhajan does not, even less than Rohit Sharma. Mahendra Singh Dhoni is playing with the abandon that he seems to have shelved since becoming captain, big shots with feet off the ground of yesteryear. Tendulkar is not there at all. As before, the players like to watch their team-mates and have a heckle. Dhoni's medium pace extracts a big edge from Uthappa; the Indians give Uthappa a roasting. They argue as to whether it was too wide for the imaginary keeper to catch, or whether there is a simulated first slip in place. Uproarious laughter. Dhoni walks back, and runs in again. Got im!!! Uthappa nicks the ball again and again, where is the slip? More debate, more heckling, more roaring. And on it goes.... Blnguyen (vote in the photo straw poll) 04:57, 3 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
