Arthur Morris edit

Hi Blnguyen, I'm going to review Arthur Morris over the course of the day for GA status, can you do me a favour and modify the season separators so they comply with WP:DASH, so 1954–55 instead of either 1954/55 or 1954-55? That way I can't see a problem with meeting the WP:MOS. Cheers for now. The Rambling Man 08:25, 16 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Sure. Tonight. Tintin 04:16, 17 July 2007 (UTC) ... is now a GA. Well done, great work. The Rambling Man 08:24, 19 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Two odd sentences in "Style":

  • He was noted for his imposing appearance to opponents his apparent air of complete composure at the wicket.
  • A deft placement saw him effective pierce gaps between fieldsmen as he stuck the ball along the ground.

>> Alec Bedser, who dismissed him 18 times in Tests and 20 times in all first class cricket,

Source ? 22 ?

  • After scores of 6 and 12 in the Fourth Test, he missed the final Test due to injury, ending an unproductive summer in which he managed only 186 runs at 23.25. The series was noted by Morris' difficulties against the spin duo of Alf Valentine and Sonny Ramadhin, who bowled left arm orthodox and leg spin respectively. The pair were responsible for five of his eight dismissals on the tour.[14] As a result of his struggles, he was dropped for the first time in his Test career when he was overlooked for the Fifth Test.[13] Tintin 03:30, 20 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

This and this are the most famous tour books. This, iirc, deals with the series plus England in South Africa 1948-9. Also came across several biographies like [1], [2] , [3]. Our college library had something like two books on cricket :-/ Tintin 00:45, 23 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Wisden Trophy edit

I've more or else completed your suggested improvements. There are probably some grammatical issues that need ironing out but do not know where to get help on this issue.

Added Later: This could be a little cheeky but as you are reviewing the Wisden Trophy you might want to rate List of Wisden Trophy records as well it is a short article and should be easy to rate. Monsta666 13:08, 1 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I'll have a look. Can you please put the full dates in for your access and please not put the date "1981" when it is obvious that the webpage was not made in 1981. We don't know when it was put there online so just leave it out. Please move the cites to after the punctuation marks. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 07:34, 3 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Regarding cites - I have read the article on cites and have now put all cites at the end of punctuations. I put todays date (2007-08-04) for the dates I retrieved data. As for the published dates I have put 2007 on many cites as the bottom of these web pages have the following Cricinfo(c) 2007. I hope this solves the cite issue. You said the layout was a bit funny can you expand on this comment? Monsta666 22:18, 6 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

I meant that some of the series have structures that differ from other series in the way that you discuss thte chronology, captains, themes, key battles, debuts and statistics. With some sereis there are weird occurrences but as it stands the structure seems inconsistent. This makes the article look inconsistent. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 09:48, 10 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi mate. I've started working on it and to be honest, in my opinion, it's not ready for GA. It's not just a light copyedit required. The Lead was appalling, and I've just bunged the material I hacked from it into the history section, where it's still odd, but at least more appropriate.

IMHO it should be failed as GA as an awful lot of work is required to pass it. A thorough Peer Review would help - has it been there? --Dweller 09:50, 3 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Good points you've brought up. We sort of have a preview, with looking at some of the technical features and some of the controversies that occured (Spyker, Ferrari etc.). With the Post-race bit however, for instance, if I went and put "McLaren had gained some ground on Ferrari and were the faster team", I would need a reference to back up my claim, but also, another user may have a completely opposite view. If other users make that point. I might add a bit on the edit, with some views. Davnel03 11:51, 31 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

I've just realised (by looking through some of Autosports news archives on their website), that there was a pre-race test at Sepang. I have added information on that (see here). I'll probably add a bit onto the Post-Race part also. Feel free to have a look at it. Davnel03 15:35, 1 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
It's true that ppl will have different implications, but we can simply source theiropinions to see what the consensus and offbeat ideas of the different pundits. eg, Peter Windsor thought that the race was a good outcome for.....because they closed the gap....or Martin Brundle thought...............or F1 racing maazine thought that the implications in the F1 power strugle was......... So, yeah, just telling us what the paddock commentator feeling about the power shift was. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 07:34, 3 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Oh, one character is one byte in computing terms, but usually, I check the article characters in terms of the text and not the whole code, which the article history measures. Hi further to your removal of various comments made by the IP user User:81.152.87.36, they reverted it back. I again removed their comments, and received a comment on my user talk page (which I have removed) telling me to stop removing perfectly legitimate comments and asking me How I expect Wiki articles to improve, if I stick my own POV everywhere. Given that the IP user was adding highly POV comments, msotly of a general nature and certainly nothing about how to improve the article, on long forgotten discussions, some from 12 months ago I took the liberty of archiving the talk page for the Tenzin Gyatso, 14th Dalai Lama article, except for the final discussion to which the IP user had added what seem to be relevant comments. ♦Tangerines♦·Talk 02:36, 10 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

The fourth item here has to take the cake for the best grammar mistake ever. -- tariqabjotu 04:32, 10 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
In cricket, people say that a batsman has [figuratevly] "hit" or "put" or "lifted" the bowler into the crowd, when it actually refers to him hitting the ball into the crowd. So, that was figurative and perhaps not appropriate, although it seems to pass on cricket bios. Maybe in the the US, people will think the batter actually hit the pitcher with a stick and he flew 100+ metres. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 04:41, 10 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
That would explain why I couldn't imagine what the "mistake" was. Sorry if I offended over a cultural difference, but I'm sure you could imagine how strange that looked to me (and, I presume, David Levy). -- tariqabjotu 04:48, 10 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Not at all offended. See Maiden (cricket). When the bowler had delivered an over that is a "maiden" the commentator will say "he's bowled a maiden". In one cricket novel I read "Johnny Whistler and the madcap cricket match" , an American comes to Australia [or England] and plays in an invitational cricket match. When they said "oh, he's bowled a maiden" [as in bowled an over (cricket) without conceding a run], the American fictional character thought that he bowler had knocked over a girl! Blnguyen (bananabucket) 09:48, 10 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Indeed, that terminology isn't used in baseball. The other problem with that wording was the claim that Barry Bonds "[hit] his 756th career home run" "after hitting" the very same home run. —David Levy 11:46, 10 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for uploading Image:Katrina Renars.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. DYK edit

Howdy, I've been away for family reasons for a day or two and just got back on wiki. I'm a little disappointed to see that you apparently knocked back my DYK nomination of Neak Leung while I was away. After nominating a few others and seeing them accepted, I was hoping to return to find my own first DYK. The comment you left on the nomination while selecting articles for the update was:
"How much of Cambodia was shattered during the civil strife and Pol Pot era though? I would guess quite a lot. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 06:20, 3 August 2007 (UTC)"
Now, that's an interesting, if rhetorical, question and I'd be happy to discuss it with you over a beer sometime - but as a reason to cull the DYK nomination, it leaves me in the dark. For referencing, word length, use of multiple free images and general encyclopedic and DYK qualities Neak Leung looked like one of the better nominations for the day. I also rescued it from the depths of Special:shortpages where it was number 311 before expansion. It took quite a lot of research and fact checking to expand and the hook was interesting, factual, referenced and the main reason the town gained international notoriety in the 70's. I was planning to do a similar expansion job on various sub stubs covered by Wikipedia:WikiProject Cambodia and nominate them for DYK also. As nearly all nominations that meet the requirements generally make the front page, I'd be interested to hear from you which part of the DYK Rules this nomination failed to meet - as your was the only comment. This would be helpful, in case I feel motivated to expand any others. Paxse 14:28, 5 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

One of the DYK criteria is in fact "interesting" - it isn't policed all that often, but I was hoping that someone would find a better alternative which was more onscure if possible. Also I should have probably tagged it as "minor" so that people would not lose too much sleep over my query. In general the article was otherwise fine. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 09:48, 10 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

hI. Note that Neak Leung on DYK proposals on July 27 had nothing to do with Pol Pot, the Khmer Rouge or the civil war. It was an American bomber that made a major blunder. I'm pretty sure it was a Vietnam War plane - ot wmight be a good idea for me to research it and create an article of its own on the incident ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you?" Your removal of the Pakistan banner from talk pages edit

Hi Blnguyen, I noticed that you recently removed the Pakistan banner from the talk pages of the Syed Ahmad Khan, Rudyard Kipling and Taj Mahal pages. I'm afraid, it is not enough to say that Pakistan didn't exist during the lifetime of Khan and Kipling or during the construction of the Taj. Syed Ahmad Khan was one of the earliest proponents of the two-nation theory that led ultimately to the creation of Pakistan. As for Kipling, his stint at the Civil and Military Gazette in Lahore for five years laid the foundations of his literary life. Lahore and NWFP are both very important in Kipling's early fiction, much more so than Bombay, where he was born. The case for Taj Mahal is less secure, but I suggest you take up your objections with the (Pakistani?) editors who put the banner there in the first place rather than simply deleting them. You will notice that the pages all have the flag of the Republic of India, which too didn't exist during Ahmad or Kipling's time. Unless you are suggesting that the flag be replaced by the flag and banner of British India (which is fine with me), you will be opening a can of worms. That topic (i.e. what to include in which South Asian nation's history or what flags to use), BTW, is by no means settled, as you will see from Nichalp's post on the history of India talk page here and my posts in the ongoing discussion here. Regards, Fowler&fowler«Talk» 10:36, 6 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Oh, I am well aware of the previous discussion....I am aware of the presence of the Indian flag on pre-ROI stuff, although if you look at {{WPVN}} you might know that before French colonisation, Vietnam was a somewhat different shape. Still, I'll see what happens. I do stand corrected on missing Kipling's Lahore sojourne though...Perhaps I should read SAK again though...I thought the theoretical concept of Pakistan was from 1930s....Blnguyen (bananabucket) 09:48, 10 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
The WP India banner has a map on the Indian subcontinent. Unless you are suggesting they never lived there or had any connection with the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, blnguyen's actions were justified.Bakaman 23:17, 6 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
It looks like I was mistaken, but the banner should have had a map of the Indian subcontinent.Bakaman 23:18, 6 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, Blnguyen, I didn't realize you had responded. You are right that the word "Pakistan" was indeed coined in the 1930s, but SAK was the first person to actively promote the idea that Muslims and Hindus in British India were distinct nations and that the Muslims should cast their lot with the British rather than with the then fledgling (and later burgeoning) nationalist movement of the Indian National Congress. He is therefore considered important in the history of Pakistan. Anyway, thanks for responding. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 15:44, 16 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
PS. Thinking you hadn't replied, I left an uncharitable note in the ANI discussion here, which I have since retracted. My apologies if I caused offense. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 15:44, 16 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Not at all. I should read a bit more carefully. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 05:45, 24 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Re:fun and monkeys; GA-review Buffalo Grove ambush edit

Indeed, I will be the article monkey and you can be the DYK/GAC monkey, for now. : ) IvoShandor 08:56, 6 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Shall we swap around next week? I have a few articles in the bank....Blnguyen (bananabucket)

Thanks for the review on Buffalo Grove ambush. I made a comment about your concerns on the talk page. Basically I am working on filling out details and expanding if possible. I don't think anyone would want to merge it, but who knows. Thanks again. : ) IvoShandor 06:04, 8 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Wow, a two for one deal. Thanks again. Hopefully these articles will progress as my research deepens. Anything off hand besides expansion that you would suggest to improve them? IvoShandor 08:03, 8 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Well no, unless you can find more sources......or unless you gone down to the site and do some OR and interview the Indians for their POV and write it up yourself in a published book....Blnguyen (bananabucket) 09:48, 10 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

RfA nomination for Bduke edit

Many thanks for such an amazingly detailed and excellent nomination. I accept. I have answered the questions. I might add some further comments later but I think it can now be opened. Just cast your eye on it first. Again, thanks, --Bduke 05:21, 9 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Did you notice who was the first vote and who was the guy who added it to the main RfA page???? Blnguyen (bananabucket) 09:48, 10 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Best nomination I've ever seen, that must have taken you ages mate. Congrads. Cheers, Dfrg.msc 08:07, 10 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Actually, that was not the longest one. See User:Blnguyen/RfA and follow the links. I have only done 2 RfAs this year....but in my heyday this was quite regular stuff. The Tariqabjotu one took the longest actually...perhaps twice as long to research. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 09:48, 10 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

DYK, GAs and monkeys edit

Swap away, if you need any GA reviews I will help out, I used to do them quite a bit and have probably done about 30 all total. Thanks for allowing Indian Creek to get on DYK, that's another GA appearing on the front page for me! I am not sure that Balloonman has been making appropriate comments about the nominations, just FYI. IvoShandor 20:27, 10 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Oh yeah, the book idea had occurred to me, but my incomplete history degree may not be the credentials I need to be taken seriously ; ) IvoShandor 20:29, 10 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Murali edit

Please don't revert my edits without good reasoning - just makes you look stupid.—Preceding unsigned comment added by Chulaww (talkcontribs)

Carry along. You are an SPA with the sole purpose of glorifying him. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 04:48, 24 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Possible oversight deletion edit

Hi Blnguyen,

Should the contributions by an impersonator of Khalid bin Mahfouz to his article be oversighted? He's a little more into litigation than the average person. Thanks, Andjam 00:40, 12 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

I've deleted the revisions so only administrators can view them... The revisions are here if you want to review them, Blnguyen. --DarkFalls talk 00:49, 12 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. I have oversighted them. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 05:45, 24 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Graphs on user page edit

On a brighter note, have you considered doing log-log versions of the graphs on your wikipedia statistics? Andjam 00:44, 12 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

I should shouldn't I? Blnguyen (bananabucket) 05:45, 24 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
