Hutton - Bedser trap edit

"After the day's play, former Australian Test leg spinner Bill O'Reilly and former teammate of Bradman, now a journalist, consulted Bedser on his use of leg theory. O'Reilly had much experience in attacking leg stump in his career and devised a plan to ensnare Bradman.[46]"

Do we have any other source for this that it was O'Reilly who suggested it ? The anthology The Joy of cricket contains a piece from a book by Alec Bedser. I don't remember what book it was but this four page chapter was titled Even Bradman had battles to fight and is about him bowling to Bradman. It does not contain a word about O'Reilly. Bedser said that they had noticed even in the 1946-7 tour that they could keep Bradman in check by bowling on a leg stump line. From what I remember, Bedser seemed to suggest that it was Norman Yardley and himself who planned it. It has been a decade since I last read it, so my memory could be faulty but it may be worth a check (Joy of cricket is a popular book). Tintin 04:45, 5 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

The Bedser book was Cricket Choice. Tintin 04:55, 5 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Well, a lot, because a lot of them cut and paste Fingleton all over the place, and Roland Perry's book of the tour is basically a rip-off of Fingo and then inflated to 3X the size with inane mumblings. The leg trap one is definitely in there but the article has now been changed to saw that O'Reilly help to refine the plan. Bedser of course already got Bradman with it once in 1946-47. Good to see you back again. All books have errors so you're needed. Even the Frith and Haigh book on Cricket Australia's archives published in 2007 has a few. Said that ENG/Aus declared at 8/68 and 8/32 in the Brisbane sticky of 1950-51, and that SRW's men won 7 in a row in WC99, they forgot about the tie....Fingo has a few, saying that Loxton debuted at OT when he played the previous season in Tests and a few others. Fingo seems a bit in the Roebuck mould, not too concerned with specific data. Each time Roebuck talks on radio he likes to be wishy-washy with the stats, especially in ODIs he likes being even more vague about the last game which was only three days ago. YellowMonkey (click here to vote for world cycling's #1 model!) 05:30, 5 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Is there any Australian player Roebuck actually likes? All you here from him is what everyone has done wrong. I thought Neil Manthorp was very good while he was over here commenting on ABC radio.Aaroncrick(Tassie talk) 09:57, 5 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Will go through them. But life is tough at the moment and am hardly reading anything cricket these days :-( Tintin 03:54, 10 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
  • I looked up some numbers at random. In the fourth Test Australia needed 404 in 345 minutes. When Bradman joined Morris, the target was 347 in 257 - which means they made 57 in 88 minutes. Later it is said that Australia were 1/96 from 90 minutes. So they made 39 runs in two minutes ? (Cricinfo says that Hassett batted for 74 minutes - if that is true, it is the second set of numbers that are wrong).
I'll have a check of that. If there is a conflict then Perry is an idiot. Although Fingo is also a bit airy-fiary on hard facts. YellowMonkey (click here to vote for world cycling's #1 model!) 01:41, 11 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Perry's cacked it again. Although his errors tend to make the numbers more dramatic, which have led some respected pundits to say they were deliberate. YellowMonkey (click here to vote for world cycling's #1 model!) 02:05, 18 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
  • Upon reaching 153, he threw away his wicket with a lofted cover drive. - Don't the sources say that he deliberately chose Bedser to give up his wicket ?
That too, he deliberately started aiming sixes when Bedser was bowling. YellowMonkey (click here to vote for world cycling's #1 model!) 01:41, 11 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

There is not much about his captaincy. For eg, it is never mentioned how he used the fast bowlers to the fullest, and underused Toshack & co (wish Phanto were here !) Tintin 04:33, 10 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Sure, indeed. Phanto was a real scholar. And got upset when no disrepsect was ever intended. Although Toshack broke down....YellowMonkey (click here to vote for world cycling's #1 model!) 01:41, 11 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Laurie Nash edit

Hey, noticed you did a clean up on Laurie Nash; thanks. Obviously it still has a long way to go to FA Quality but I was wondering how you thought it was shaping up. Any particular advice? --Roisterer (talk) 04:56, 12 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the feedback. Yes, Nash obviously completely misread Woodfull when he thought Woodfull would be impressed with a barrage of short pitched bowling. However, I wouldn't go as far as Frith, who basically labels Nash as some simple-minded thug. --Roisterer (talk) 12:25, 12 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Miller biography edit

Do you have a copy of cricket crossfire? Trying to think of where to get sources to diversify the Refs on Miller's articles. Obviously general criket books can be used in most of the matchplay bits but the war period needs a biog I think. YellowMonkey (click here to vote for world cycling's #1 model!) 06:46, 31 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yes I do. In fact it is sitting right next to me at the moment! Ponsford's biographer mentioned that Ponsford was Miller's childhood idol and I plan to have a look through the book to see what it says about the topic. Rather annoyingly it does not have an index! Cheers, Mattinbgn\talk 06:51, 31 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
It's an awkward book. The book is arranged by topic, rather than in any chronological order and has more about Miller's opinions on cricket and cricketers than reflections on his own life. The war section is surprisingly limited, saying very little of his actions other than his close calls, which he blames on himself. Nothing about a Beethoven detour, the section about his CO at Gloucester stops short of the charge and there is little else. I will wade through it over the next day or two. -- Mattinbgn\talk 07:41, 31 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Sincere question edit

I wanted to ask you this a long long time back. But never did coz' it was off-wiki-ish and too personal. But anyways, I ll do the honours today.

Why is an Australian so interested in stuff related to India? We all know the ugly Border-Gavaskar saga. I have also seen some uncharitable rebukes from India POVists on your talk page. But still there is no loss of interest on your side! You still revert vandalism on India-related pages, still check into discussions related to WP:IND...n dude... you also are responsible for elevating articles on Indian cricketers (which includes monkeygate villian Harbhajan Singh!) to FA or GA status...Either you are crazy or God! Whatever it is... you amaze me! Same question bout Vietnam --KnowledgeHegemony talk 13:03, 3 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Mostly cultural reasons, relating to Buddhist culture. Asoka, Nalanda and all that. I guess the cricket doesn't hurt. I'm not too worried about the troublemakers per se, whether they were Islamist/BJP/regional ethnic/LTTE/Bollywood/Khalistan although I think a lot of the seniors didn't/don't do their share of dealing with idiots or doing work but are busy with gathering disciples, subtle self-promotion and climbing the ladder and whatnot so that cheeses me off. The other thing was that I thought some of them were being duplicitous, double dealing and running sting operations against each other, which turned me off a bit. There were some really trivial ego clashes there. YellowMonkey (click here to vote for world cycling's #1 model!) 03:41, 4 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
I've scaled back my participation on India articles since mid-2007, I'm hardly as pro-active there as I used to be, especially with dealing with disputes as I think I'll be blamed if something goes haywire, although others are quick to say "we" everywhere if the project goes on a FA/GA boom even if they didn't do the work themselves and blame others for their own screwed up double deals. Too much bandwagoneering. I've stopped writing new India articles, and haven't done any new article work since then, except to upload bits and pieces from the depths of my computer, or to keep Bhajji, Irfan Pathan, Murali Kartik and Dinesh Karthik up to speed as they are all FA/GA. Although hardly anyone wants to do the dirty work so sometimes vandalism on Indira/Sanjay/Rajiv/Sonia/Rahul Gandhi stays a long time. Once I didn't check my full watchlist for a week and some vandal put in that they were Muslims with secret circumcisions and it stayed there. Looking for advice about the spam queue edit

A lot of articles show up in the db-spam queue that are about Indian educational or community service organizations. I'd like to get some feedback from some editors living in India on how to handle these; is there some website or some kind of search that would help us decide which institutions are notable? For instance, New article appearing on wikepedia has a link to un.org that mentions the subject favorably; is that important? Ah sorry, I don't live in India and so don't have the knowhow to understand the importance of obscure pseudo-borderline notable things. Only the flagrant nonsense. YellowMonkey (click here to vote for world cycling's #1 model!) 00:52, 5 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

On a more lightened note, do you know when the IPL games start? I hope Zinta does not end up crying in the last match LOL... BTW, have you seen Slumdog Millionaire? ShahidTalk2me 06:45, 26 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
April 19 IIRC. I think there's a pretty good chance that she will end up crying again this year, perhaps earlier than the semifinals. I think Rajasthan, Chennai and Delhi will be leading the way again. Some of the Rajasthan players like Ravindra Jadeja, Siddharth Trivedi and Yusuf Pathan have improved even more after working with Warne in the first IPL, Delhi will have Vettori for the whole season this year and got some cunning buys of uncapped Australian players before the auction, CSK bought Flintoff. IIRC Punjab got a bit lucky in one game against Delhi where it was rained out after about 3 overs, and because they were ahead after three overs they won. And another one where VRV Singh lost the plot against Mumbai in the last over and luckily for them when Mumbai needed a quick single the batsman hit it straight to Yuvraj and he jumped on the stumps. They'll probably work out Shaun Marsh as well. Still funny that a billionaire and proven businessman like Mallya bought a ridiculously cosnervative Test team and got smacked everywhere. I would have thought SRK and PZ would have been the ones more prone to silly decisions, but there you go. No I haven't watched Slumdog, or any other movies at all recently, except some random patter on free to air TV. They haven't had Bollywood month (only about 4 per year) for about a year now, and they keep on repeating the same ones, including a few annoying SAK ones. I haven't watched many. In order of watching ... Asoka (ridiculous history, a soap, pretty silly), DDLJ (good, with obligatory slapstick flirting etc....), Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam (big thumbs down, although Salman playing the popstar, as always playing himself rather than the character amused me), Devdas (very boring), Karan Arjun (good, mainly because it wasn't so serious, it took its ridiculousness in its stride), Baazigar (good although the blood was a bit much), The SRK/SAK/PZ in USA one (stopped after half an hour), Main Hoon Na (ridiculous, a 40-yo student), Don't Say A Word (Bachan and Rai one - cheesy as), Hil De Chuke Sanam (too pompous, notwithstanding the ridicolous slapstick by Salman in the first half hour), an adaptation of a famous Bengali novel with SAK as some rich businessman's son who demolishes the wall separating him and his love (down with SAK), Lagaan (the best), Mangal Pandey (good, although I was told it was fake history afterwards)....Basically AK is good, Salman is good for slapstick, SRK is only worth watching with Kajol, they were good together. HAHAHAHA!!!! Oh my, you saw some of the uper-commercial films and most of what you mentioned I personally hate, though I like Baazigar, Kal Ho Naa Ho, Lagaan and DDLJ. Have you not seen Salaam Namaste? I find it light and fun and I really thought you saw this, don't know why. I don't like SAK films. The old ones particularly suck. But he has now improved tremendously, Omkara and Hum Tum were good. I do like SRK and SK films though. Salman, because he is always playing himself LOL and I liked his work in Jab Pyaar Kisise Hota Hai. SRK's great (I also HATE Asoka!!! And Devdas was a real boredom I agree), if you liked his Baazigar (watch Anjaam, he is even worse in it), Karan Arjun (oh I don't like it, I liked it as a child) and DDLJ, who knows you may also like Yes Boss, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (+Kajol LOL). And if you liked Lagaan, you may like Swades made by Gowariker and Chak De India. I like Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa and Pardes (film) of SRK...
Don't Say a Word? That's soo bad. I'm really sorry you had to go through this. Well, nice to know that you liked some. ShahidTalk2me 08:23, 3 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Salaam Namaste - how could I forget. Yes I did see that. A totally crude/slapstick version of DDLJ with no charm, eg the social difficulties of Simran's conservative family situation. All these accounts were blocked indefinitely for vandalising the Bollywood article and The List of Top Bollywood Films articles.

Thank you. But there is something even more frustrating called 91.130.91.92 (talk · contribs). As you know, A. R. Rahman won two Oscars. His lead included a mention of awards he won, Filmfare Awards, National Awards, Golden Globe, BAFTA, Oscars. This user started removing Filmfare Awards (which is one of the most veteran and prominent ceremonies in India) claiming they are not notable, reverting everyone who even dared to mention it. And he himself started adding Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, which is a relatively new and even more non-notable ceremony.
Well, Jagged started a discussion about this anon on the talk page. The anon just repeated that it is POV and that Filmfare is just stupid and so on and on and on. Jagged cited sources proving the importance and prominence of Filmfare. In fact, it is well known that National Film Awards and Filmfare are the most prominent film functions.
But it doesn't help, and despite warnings, consensus and obvious facts, he keeps reverting it all the time. He says on the talk, "I will never allow it to be on this page" or something... He clearly does it because of POV issues, which you may already guess (I think you were involved quite a lot with Indian editors).
Please help me with that. BTW, the article has been extensively edited and vandalised since his Oscar win fwiw. ShahidTalk2me 07:51, 3 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
WOW that was fast, thank you. Let's see how long it takes until account socks of these anons turn up LOL. ShahidTalk2me 08:25, 3 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Oh God! Is this Clubover a sockpuppet? I can't believe. Thank you for taking time to chack it. Well Rajapalani (talk · contribs) just amazes me with his nonsense edits. He removes the Filmfare Awards completely. I've warned him. Let's see.
The fact is that this issue does not even need a consensus. Filmfare is the most prominent and veteran film ceremony in India along with National Film Awards. That's a fact. This user claims that State awards are more notable, which is a joke (a ceremony that has been held for some 10 years. Merely has general notability but no particular prominence whatsoever. But anyway, his user page clearly shows why he does that. Do you guess?). Jagged cited sources for Filmfare being prominent, and I offered to give even more and many other reliable sources from internet and books. I asked him to find some for State Awards as well. What do you say?
Are you sure Bollywood-Turk (talk · contribs) is not a SP? (come on, a newly registered user who knows everything about how Wikipedia works, protection, signatures, and as he logs in he instantly visits the ARR page? LOL) ShahidTalk2me 14:43, 4 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
