History of Malta

Hello. I noticed that you are the author chronological articles about the history of Malta:

However, I would like to point out that "1091–1530" was a very long period in the history of Malta (mainly under the rule of the County of Sicily and Kingdom of Sicily) and... ... still do not exist article about this: History of Malta under Sicily or neutral name History of Malta (1091–1530). You are an expert in this field, you may want to create such an article in the near future? :) Subtropical-man (talk / en-2) 22:11, 6 January 2017 (UTC)

@Subtropical-man: I do intend to write such an article in the future, but currently I am very busy and I don't have time to do so. Eventually, there should also be articles about:
When I have time I'll try to work on these articles. :) Best regards, Xwejnusgozo (talk) 18:51, 7 January 2017 (UTC)

New Page Review - newsletter No.2

Hello Xwejnusgozo,

A HUGE backlog

We now have 819 New Page Reviewers!
Most of us requested the user right at PERM, expressing a wish to be able to do something about the huge backlog, but the chart on the right does not demonstrate any changes to the pre-user-right levels of October.

Hitting 17,000 soon

The backlog is still steadily growing at a rate of 150 a day or 4,650 a month. Only 20 reviews a day by each reviewer over the next few days would bring the backlog down to a managable level and the daily input can then be processed by each reviewer doing only 2 or 3 reviews a day - that's about 5 minutes work!
It didn't work in time to relax for the Xmas/New Year holidays. Let's see if we can achieve our goal before Easter, otherwise by Thanksgiving it will be closer to 70,000.

Second set of eyes

Remember that we are the only guardians of quality of new articles, we alone have to ensure that pages are being correctly tagged by non-Reviewer patrollers and that new authors are not being bitten.

Abuse

This is even more important and extra vigilance is required considering Orangemoody, and

  1. this very recent case of paid advertising by a Reviewer resulting in a community ban.
  2. this case in January of paid advertising by a Reviewer, also resulting in a community ban.
  3. This Reviewer is indefinitely blocked for sockpuppetry.

Coordinator election

Kudpung is stepping down after 6 years as unofficial coordinator of New Page Patrolling/Reviewing. There is enough work for two people and two coords are now required. Details are at NPR Coordinators; nominate someone or nominate yourself. Date for the actual suffrage will be published later.

Hello Xwejnusgozo,

Voting for coordinators has now begun HERE and will continue through/to 23:59 UTC Monday 06 March. Please be sure to vote. Any registered, confirmed editor can vote. Nominations are now closed.

Still a MASSIVE backlog

We now have 819 New Page Reviewers but despite numerous appeals for help, the backlog has NOT been significantly reduced.
If you asked for the New Page Reviewer right, please consider investing a bit of time - every little helps preventing spam and trash entering the mainspace and Google when the 'NO_INDEX' tags expire.

Fortifications help

Hi Xwejnusgozo, you've done excellent work on the fortifications of Malta and was hoping you might help me. How would you classify the fortification at the bottom of the photo on the right? It's some kind of causeway extending from the wall, behind which stands a gate (below and to the right of the photographer). It's from Acre, so Ottoman, probably late 18th century. Thank you.

@Poliocretes: Although I am very interested in the subject, I'm far from an expert on fortifications. I've never seen a fortification similar to the one in your photo, and I still didn't understand exactly what it is. It might be similar to a barbican, but I'm not sure. You can try looking it up in Stephen C. Spiteri's Illustrated Glossary of Terms used in Military Architecture which is available online here, although that resource seems to focus more on European fortifications rather than Ottoman. Have you tried searching about the walls of Acre, perhaps there is some info or a map which describes this feature? I'll get back to you if I find any information about this. Xwejnusgozo (talk) 15:30, 25 March 2017 (UTC)
Thanks, great, I'll look it up. This, btw, is what it looks like from below. Poliocretes (talk) 18:51, 25 March 2017 (UTC)
@Poliocretes: Seeing the structure, it does remind me of this barbican in Fort St. Angelo. Both structures are quite similar and seem to date from roughly the same era, and the St. Angelo barbican protects a ramp leading from the fort's main gate, while the Acre structure is protecting a gate. I'm still not 100% sure, but it does seem to fit in Spiteri's definition as "an outer work defending the gate of a castle or citadel, frequently a fortified gate house." Triton Fountain

I will upload some other photos of the dismantling of the fountain. However I am finding difficulty to upload photos one by one. Is there another way to upload a group of photos together when it is the same subject? Thanks for the help.Continentaleurope (talk) 16:58, 17 April 2017 (UTC) Continentaleurope (talk) 16:58, 17 April 2017 (UTC)

@Continentaleurope: Have you tried using the UploadWizard? Although I haven't uploaded anything for quite a while now, if I recall correctly it should allow you to upload multiple files at once. I think you still need to add details and categories one by one though. Regards, Xwejnusgozo (talk) 17:22, 17 April 2017 (UTC)
@Xwejnusgozo: Thanks for the information. It is allowing me to upload about 20 pics at a time. You will need to name the first one and then gives you an option to regenerate the name and adding a different number at the end. I will used this method to upload about 5k pics.Continentaleurope (talk) 20:53, 17 April 2017 (UTC)

Wirt Ghawdex

Hi Xwejnusgozo. Would it help if I suggested some extra material for your Wirt Ghawdex page? I am one of their volunteers, very new to Wikipedia editing, but could maybe make a contribution here. GiovanniGozo (talk) 15:49, 2 May 2017 (UTC)

@GiovanniGozo: First of all sorry for the late reply, I've been a bit busy lately. Feel free to edit/add content to the Wirt Għawdex page, and if you want I'll take a look at the page once you finished editing to see if it is OK. Your contributions would definitely be welcome! @Xwejnusgozo: Thanks for that. I'll get to work and show you the results. I hope to do more in due course but am just finding my way. Best regards, GiovanniGozo (talk) 14:56, 8 May 2017 (UTC)

New Page Review - Newsletter No.4

Hello Xwejnusgozo,

Since rolling out the right in November, just 6 months ago, we now have 819 reviewers, but the backlog is still mysteriously growing fast. If every reviewer did just 55 reviews, the 22,000 backlog would be gone, in a flash, schwoop, just like that!

But do remember: Rather than speed, quality and depth of patrolling and the use of correct CSD criteria are essential to good reviewing. Do not over-tag. Make use of the message feature to let the creator know about your maintenance tags. See the tutorial again HERE. Get help HERE.

ITN recognition for Maltese general election, 2017

On 8 June 2017, In the news was updated with an item that involved the article Maltese general election, 2017, which you nominated. If you know of another recently created or updated article suitable for inclusion in ITN, please suggest it on the candidates page. BencherliteTalk 14:05, 8 June 2017 (UTC)

Grenfell Tower fire

I added Category:Brexit because the fire is likely to lead to a delay in the Tory/DUP alliance being formed, and thus a delay in the opening of the Brexit negotiations. Please would you undo your edit? Mjroots (talk) 19:32, 14 June 2017 (UTC)

@Mjroots: I don't think that it's enough to justify the addition of Category:Brexit. The article is about the fire, not its implications on Brexit. After the 2017 Manchester Arena bombing, campaigning for the general election was suspended, but the page on the attack is not in Category:United Kingdom general election, 2017. However, if you feel that the Brexit category should still be added, go ahead and undo my edit and other users who are more familiar with the subject can decide whether or not to keep it. --Xwejnusgozo (talk) 20:08, 14 June 2017 (UTC)
In the spirit of WP:BRD, I'll raise this at talk and see what consensus develops. Will copy the above over. Mjroots (talk) 20:11, 14 June 2017 (UTC)
FYI, consensus is against me. Mjroots (talk) 07:36, 15 June 2017 (UTC)

Backlog update:

  • The new page backlog is currently at 18,511 pages. We have worked hard to decrease from over 22,000, but more hard work is needed! Please consider reviewing even just a few pages a a day.

Orsi Tower

According to a book by Stephen C. Spiteri, the San Petronio Battery stood on sight since 1602, before the tower. It eventually because known as Orsi Battery after the tower was built in 1629. The battery, ditch and tower were built because of the prisonors. A rough sketch of both of them exist, in the one of the Neptune fountain sketch. (Spiteri (2017), p. 134.).

The above is my interpretation from the book, and the information is accurate. Can you see how to integrate this in the article, and correct the mistake which gives the idea that the battery was built after the tower?

Need any clarifications just ask.

I did some revisions myself.Continentaleurope (talk) 12:20, 13 August 2017 (UTC) Continentaleurope (talk) 12:20, 13 August 2017 (UTC)

@Continentaleurope: You're right, I had assumed that the battery was built after the tower. I made a few minor edits to the article as well. --Xwejnusgozo (talk) 15:28, 13 August 2017 (UTC)

Bakery of the Order

I have expanded a bit the article Bakery of the Order of St John. Most information I found was by accident and decided to add it before I forget where it was. Kindly review my revision(s) when you have time; should be fine. Expanded from 5 sources to 16 sources, and added important details; dates (demolished), previous bakeries info, other purpose of building (military), further information, maintanace. If you need any clarifications let me know.Continentaleurope (talk) 20:40, 22 August 2017 (UTC)

@Continentaleurope: I had a look at the article and it seems to be OK to me. I have one issue - do you think that the article should be entitled "Forni della Signoria" instead of "Bakery of the Order of St John"? The term "bakery of the Order" seems to be more commonly used than Forni della Signoria, but that seems to have been the official name of the building. Other alternative titles could be Bakery (Valletta) or Old Bakery (Valletta), since this building wasn't the Order's only bakery (there had to be earlier bakeries in Rhodes, Birgu etc). What is your opinion on this? --Xwejnusgozo (talk) 16:58, 23 August 2017 (UTC)
    • Forni della signoria is used specifically to refer to this bakery, at least was most common during the knights period. However the later name bakery of the order or the variants is used more common in recent sources. I would says "Forni della signoria" was the bakery of the Order in Valletta....mentioning both but focusing on the historic and unique name where no one is mistaken. What is your opionion?Continentaleurope (talk) 18:17, 23 August 2017 (UTC)
  • @Continentaleurope: Since more recent sources call it the "bakery of the Order", I suppose the name can be left as it is. However, I personally prefer "Forni della Signoria" since it is more specific. I think that where a building's original name has fallen out of use but it has no modern name, we should use the original. Another example would be the Casa del Commun Tesoro, which is not really known by that name anymore, but there is no suitable modern alternative ("Casino Maltese" is the club not the building). --Xwejnusgozo (talk) 18:45, 23 August 2017 (UTC)
Generally known as the "treasury of the order", but better leave that as it is. Treasury should be used specifically if for the institution. Treasury should be used specifically if for the institution. To also be more specific it is not longer a gentlemen's club because women are also members. I was told this by the receptionist. The original building is Casa del commun tesoro, bu the present building is only referred to as Casino Maltese...Casino Notabile, Casino Mifsud, etc.. The two buildings, bakery and the treasury have different situations and not comparable...according to me.

I prefer della signoria because until it still existed, and a century after, it was still known by that name. Bakery of the Order is used as a generic reference to imply that it was built to be used during the order of st john. Similarly we do not write Court/s (il-Qorti) despite its more use....refers to institution or the use of it rather than the building....Courts of justice building is more appropriate. I will leave the decision to you but when we have unique names we should give them preference over generic names, and or their use.Continentaleurope (talk) 20:41, 23 August 2017 (UTC)

@Continentaleurope: I just requested the move. --Xwejnusgozo (talk) 20:46, 23 August 2017 (UTC)
Ok then, clarified some things in sections above.Continentaleurope (talk) 20:48, 23 August 2017 (UTC)

Valletta buildings

I uploaded some photos of Valletta, and when a building has its name..I used its name or organization. It would be best to have further sub-categories in this regards. I will then need your help to see which monuments of Valletta reamain, apart from those where pdfs are available. You will need to mainly include the walls of Valletta and their location. I would suggest to categorize the photos after the September Wiki Love Monuments.

Also, when I asked you before about what do you think of the photos I upload, I mean how I can improve rather than how helpful they are.

We will also need to discuss what buildings I should focus on. I wish to create a number of drafts, if I am allowed to, where I can gradually work on and move page to public space eventually.

Thanks for your work.Continentaleurope (talk) 13:04, 16 September 2017 (UTC) Continentaleurope (talk) 13:04, 16 September 2017 (UTC)

@Continentaleurope: Thanks for uploading many pics of Valletta (and elsewhere in Malta). When I have time, I'll try to categorize them appropriately. The vast majority of the photos you upload are of good quality, and they illustrate well the subject. Regarding what buildings should have articles on Wikipedia, I would first focus on the larger palaces for which there are multiple sources and a lot of information. Creating drafts and moving them to mainspace when they are ready seems to be a good idea. --Xwejnusgozo (talk) 08:43, 17 September 2017 (UTC)

WikiProject Women in Red/The World Contest

Hi. Thankyou for your participation in the challenge series or/and contests. In November The Women in Red World Contest is being held to try to produce new articles for as many countries worldwide and occupations as possible. There will be over $4000 in prizes to win, including Amazon vouchers and paid subscriptions. If this would appeal to you and you think you'd be interested in contributing new articles on women during this month for your region or wherever please sign up in the participants section. The articles done may also count towards the ongoing challenge. If you're not interested in prize money yourself but are willing to participate and raise money to buy books about women for others to use, this is also fine. Help would also be appreciated in drawing up the lists of missing articles. If you think of any missing articles please add them to the sub lists by continent at Missing articles. Thankyou, and if taking part, good luck!♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:25, 4 October 2017 (UTC)

Auberge de Castille

I was wondering why we don't use some photos of the interior of Auberge de Castille on the article, since all there is are of the exterior. It would be nice to have of the courtyard, fountain, stairs, chapel, ambassadors hall, cabinet room, office of the prime minister, main areas or else. My question is whether we have any, or whether I should think about it. Also, to insert what I am suggesting, it may be the case that the article should grow slightly to be balanced in words and photos. What is your opinion?Continentaleurope (talk) 21:18, 26 October 2017 (UTC)

@Continentaleurope: I don't think there are any pics of the interior or courtyards as yet. If some are uploaded, they will be useful for inclusion in the article. The article also could use further expansion - Castille is the most impressive and important auberge, but some articles about other auberges, such as Auberge d'Italie, are much longer. Xwejnusgozo (talk) 16:54, 27 October 2017 (UTC)
@Xwejnusgozo: I do have some photos of Castille, but not of everything. Italie will be open soon and maybe I will take some photos eventually.Continentaleurope (talk) 17:46, 27 October 2017 (UTC)

Inappropriate edit

This was highly inappropriate - the page had just been moved, so clearly moving it back was "potentially controversial". In fact it should always be "Co-cathedral" in English (everywhere), as you only capitalize the first parts of hyphenated words, unless the 2nd part is a proper name, although I accept that in the Valetta case the wrong capitalization seems common. Time to archive some of this page. Johnbod (talk) 13:20, 27 November 2017 (UTC)

@Johnbod: The page was entitled "Saint John's Co-Cathedral" until User:Chicbyaccident moved it to "Co-Cathedral of Saint John" on 20:11, 26 November 2017‎. You then moved the page to "Saint John's Co-cathedral" on 04:40, 27 November 2017‎, stating that there was "no reason to move". I requested the technical move back to "Saint John's Co-Cathedral" because I always saw the name spelt as "Co-Cathedral" rather than "Co-cathedral" and I assumed that the new spelling was an error.
You're right about the archiving - I'll have a look to see how to do it. Regards, --Xwejnusgozo (talk) 13:44, 27 November 2017 (UTC)

  • The new page backlog is currently at 12713 pages. Please consider reviewing even just a few pages each day! If everyone helps out, it will really put a dent in the backlog.
  • Currently the backlog stretches back to March and some pages in the backlog have passed the 90 day Google index point. Please consider reviewing some of them!

Outreach and Invitations:

  • If you know other editors with a good understanding of Wikipedia policy, invite them to join NPP by dropping the invitation template on their talk page with: {{subst:NPR invite}}. Adding more qualified reviewers will help with keeping the backlog manageable.

General project update:

  • ACTRIAL has resulted in a significant increase in the quality of new submissions, with noticeably fewer CSD, PROD, and BLPPROD candidates in the new page feed. However, the majority of the backlog still dates back to before ACTRIAL started, so consider reviewing articles from the middle or back of the backlog.
  • The NPP Browser can help you quickly find articles with topics that you prefer to review from within the backlog.
  • To keep up with the latest conversation on New Pages Patrol or to ask questions, you can go to Wikipedia talk:New pages patrol/Reviewers and add it to your watchlist.

New Years new page backlog drive

Hello Xwejnusgozo, thank you for your efforts reviewing new pages!

Announcing the NPP New Year Backlog Drive!

We have done amazing work so far in December to reduce the New Pages Feed backlog by over 3000 articles! Now is the time to capitalise on our momentum and help eliminate the backlog!

The backlog drive will begin on January 1st and run until January 29th. Prize tiers and other info can be found HERE.

Awards will be given in tiers in two categories:

  • The total number of reviews completed for the month.
  • The minimum weekly total maintained for all four weeks of the backlog drive.

NOTE: It is extremely important that we focus on quality reviewing. Despite our goal of reducing the backlog as much as possible, please do not rush while reviewing.
