June 2018 GOCE newsletter edit

Guild of Copy Editors June 2018 News

Welcome to the June 2018 GOCE newsletter, in which you will find Guild updates since the February edition. Progress continues to be made on the copyediting backlog, which has been reduced to 7 months and reached a new all-time low. Requests continue to be handled efficiently this year, with 272 completed by the end of May (an average completion time of 10.5 days). Fewer than 10% of these waited longer than 20 days, and the longest wait time was 29 days.

Wikipedia in general, and the Guild in particular, experienced a deep loss with the death on 20 March of Corinne. Corinne (a GOCE coordinator since 1 July 2016) was a tireless aide on the requests page, and her peerless copyediting is a part of innumerable GAs and FAs. Her good cheer, courtesy and tact are very much missed.

March drive: The goal was to remove June, July and August 2017 from our backlog and all February 2018 Requests (a total of 219 articles). This drive was an outstanding success, and by the end of the month all but eight of these articles were cleared. Of the 33 editors who signed up, 19 recorded 277 copy edits (425,758 words).

April blitz: This one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 15 through 21 April, focusing on Requests and the last eight articles tagged in August 2017. At the end of the week there were only 17 pending requests, with none older than 17 days. Of the nine editors who signed up, eight editors completed 22 copy edits (62,412 words).

May drive: We set out to remove September, October and November 2017 from our backlog and all April 2018 Requests (a total of 298 articles). There was great success this month with the backlog more than halved from 1,449 articles at the beginning of the month to a record low of 716 articles. Officially, of the 20 who signed up, 15 editors recorded 151 copy edits (248,813 words).

Coordinator elections: It's election time again. Nominations for Guild coordinators (who will serve a six-month term for the second half of 2018) have begun, and will close at 23:59 UTC on 15 June. All Wikipedia editors in good standing are eligible, and self-nominations are encouraged. Voting will take place between 00:01 UTC on 16 June and 23:59 UTC on 30 June.

June blitz: Stay tuned for this one-week copy-editing blitz, which will take place in mid-June.

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators: Corinne, Jonesey95, Miniapolis, Reidgreg and Tdslk.

Re Jhonny Lucas edit

Jhonny Lucas has played in not only Série B, but Série A and the Campeonato Paulista. These are all professional leagues as of WP:NFOOTY. Please stop the article deletion procedure, as it will only result in 'keep'. Davidlofgren1996 (talk) 17:03, 13 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Ah, my mistake. I am not that familiar with football, and took the club to be a nonprofessional group, as it didnt say otherwise.Xevus11 (talk) 21:18, 13 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I'm CASSIOPEIA. I wanted to let you know that I saw the page you reviewed, Delta App, and have un-reviewed it again. If you have any questions, please ask them on my talk page. Thank you.

@CASSIOPEIA:Mind if I ask why?Xevus11 (talk) 01:21, 17 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
Hi Xevus11, So sorry, I might have accidentally unpicked the review button and then thought it had not been unreviewed and reviewed after. I have marked the page unreviewed now, you could go back and check the page off and I have removed the message from your talk page. Mistakes is mine, apologies. CASSIOPEIA(talk) 01:37, 17 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
@CASSIOPEIA: Ahh, ok. Had me worried there for a second. Have a nice one. Its actually a good thing you did too, I noticed the stub tag had been removed by the author. Xevus11 (talk) 02:15, 17 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
Hi Xevus11, Thank you for your understanding. Have a wonderful day. CASSIOPEIA(talk) 02:54, 17 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Servitor (chaos magic) edit

Hi Xevus11, thanks for the review, I'll try and improve the page. I'd like some clarification though, if possible. Which parts of the page do you feel refer to Wikipedia as a source? As far as I can see, every statement references an external source. Rune370 (talk) 22:41, 23 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Rune370: Hmm, looks like you're right. I've never seen a reflist structured quite like that. I'll remove the tag and take another look. Thanks for letting me know, Xevus11 (talk) 22:44, 23 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
Thanks Xevus11, you're right, that is a marked improvement. Rune370 (talk) 07:26, 24 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

File:James Cyriax.jpg edit

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. RonBot (talk) 17:13, 24 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

There were no bare links edit

[1] You tagged it for bare URLs, but there were none, I used refill already. Did your Page Curation tools give you a warning message by mistake? Dream Focus 01:05, 25 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Dream Focus:My mistake, I thought that bare URLs referred to all citations without a relatively full citation, and that simply having the article title didn't qualify as non-bare. Ill change it going forward, thanks.Xevus11 (talk) 01:08, 25 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Deletion of Katalin von Feuchtersleben edit

Hi, I am MVA33. Following up with what you said about the page. As I am "New" to writing for Wikipedia, I wasn't aware of the "No Infobox without writing" and so fawth. I completely understand and would like to apolagise. If you would like more written I can, I just need a bit more time. Thank you. if you have anymore questions just let me know on my talk page —Preceding undated comment added 22:33, 25 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

@MVA33: Its no trouble, if you have citations and text for it, feel free to create the page. Nobody ever feels offended or angry when deleting pages as part of the New Page Patrol, its just following the guidelines here: Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion. Happy editing, Xevus11 (talk) 22:50, 25 June 2018 (UTC).Reply

Ispolkom edit

Please do not delete Ispolkom, I cannot see what was the trouble 8 years ago. I have very good sources. Intend to continue. It's hardly a synonym for "executive committee". Boeing720 (talk) 05:07, 26 June 2018 (UTC) Also see Alexander Kerensky - February Revolution part. Boeing720 (talk) 05:09, 26 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Boeing720:The deletion tag was for no-content only. If you have added content, feel free to remove the tag. Xevus11 (talk) 17:39, 26 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
Yes I thought so too. But the history file reveals that there has been an article in 2010 however, which for unknown reasons had been redirected to the general article Executive Committee.

Otherwise, good of you to be alert on vandalism. Thanks! Boeing720 (talk) 01:27, 27 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Huh, thats very strange. I'v seen that once or twice before, guess I just didnt catch it this time. Weird.Xevus11 (talk) 01:28, 27 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion declined: Firestone Farms edit

Hello Xevus11, and thanks for patrolling new pages! I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Firestone Farms, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: A7 cannot be applied to geographical locations. If you are interested in learning more about how speedy deletion works, I have compiled a list of helpful pages at User:SoWhy/SDA. You can of course also contact me if you have questions. Thank you. Speedy deletion declined: Noizegarden (band) edit

Hello Xevus11. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Noizegarden (band), a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: some GNews hits and has an article on ko-wiki since 2006, so take it to WP:AFD instead. Page Deletion edit

Hello, Xevus. Actually most of the sources on the net are either copyright books or blogs and it's very difficult to find an independent source for this particular article. I tried finding sources that were reliable but to no avail. This is the second time this page is being deleted and I still don't have the sources. I could add info but that would be without sources based on my personal information, if not then you can delete the page I have no problem. Shawrix (talk) 05:57, 27 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Shawrix:Hmm thats tough then. Where does your personal information come from? If you have books, textbooks, even primary sources would prevent a deletion here.Xevus11 (talk) 19:12, 27 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Xevus11:Nah, Raw info is very rare. There is alot of hearsay. I was being too optimistic about the info i could have found. I'll try contacting the blogger if i get time to get his permission. Shawrix (talk) 14:49, 29 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

When will Josy be allowed on Wikipedia? edit

I might have drawn, created, and posted the Josy the rabbit thing comics myself but why does the Wikipedia article for it have to be deleted? I mean what if Comedy Central tried to edit their own Wikipedia article is that not allowed? Emiship'05 (talk) 16:59, 24 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Emiship'05: An article needs "verifiable, objective evidence that the subject has received significant attention from independent sources to support a claim of notability" as described in Wikipedia:Notability. In addition, it is considered criteria for speedy deletion to create an article about something you or someone you know has created. This criteria can be overruled by significant coverage in some circumstances, however. To answer your example, no it would not be allowed for Comedy Central to edit their own wikipedia page, under Wikipedia:Conflict of interest, and they could have their edits reversed and the account blocked. I should let you know that attempting to recreate this page again may result in administrator action, as you hve recreated a page made by User:Emilyiship'05, and this could look like sockpuppeting or block evasion if you continue. That having been said, if you feel your comic has generated significant enough coverage to warrant a wikipedia page, you can always submit it down at Wikipedia:Articles for creation to get it made. If you have any other questions about article creation or other parts of wikipedia, feel free to ask at the Wikipedia:Teahouse or Wikipedia:Help desk. Happy editing, Xevus11 (talk) 19:17, 24 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Xevus11: User:Emiship'05 and User:Emilyiship'05 are the same person as per this page . Kpgjhpjm 06:35, 25 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
I am aware, however as the old account was temp blocked and had pair of articles (including the one that I nominated for deletion) previously deleted, it wont look good to an admin, and I wanted to make sure Emiship'05 was aware of this. Xevus11 (talk) 23:06, 25 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I am aware of the Em account recreating the article that was created by the Emily account, K? - user:Emilyiship'05 —Preceding undated comment added 21:35, 30 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
