• TemplateStyles has been deployed to the Swedish Wikipedia. TemplateStyles is a feature to make it easy to add CSS to templates without administrator privileges. This allows for better adaptability to screen sizes, especially on mobile where are half our total page views. • Registration pages now collect keyboard/mouse usage information for research on identifying spambots.

• You can opt in to a new beta feature that lets you use visual diffs on history pages. [4]
• The visual editor shows and lets you edit templates in one way, and reference lists in another. This meant that templates that only contain a fake reference list, like {{reflist}}, would not get updated as you edited. Now they will update as you edit, but you will no longer be able to visually edit them as templates. [5]
• The abuse filter extension has a new feature contains_all that you may use to check if one or more strings are all contained in another given string. [6]
• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 13 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 14 February. It will be on all wikis from 15 February (calendar).

Recent changes

• The explanation of the abbreviations on the recent changes page could overlap with the list of changes. This has been fixed. [8][9]
• You can now see statistics for pageviews per wiki per country. You can see this on maps or in a table. [10]

Problems

• Linter is reporting estimated counts instead of actual counts for some wikis. This is because of performance problems. You might notice a false higher number in linter counts for some categories. This will be fixed as soon as the performance problem has been fixed. [11]
• Last week the way that Visual Editor displays references lists was changed. As a result, the references generated by specific templates like {{sfn}} are not visible in the references list whilst editing. [12][13]

• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 20 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 21 February. It will be on all wikis from 22 February (calendar).

Recent changes

• Checkusers and stewards can now view private data such as the IP address in the abuse log. This data is removed regularly. [15]

Problems

• Last week's MediaWiki version was rolled back because of a bug. [16][17]
• Since the deployment train last week until late evening on 20 February UTC, when you thanked someone for an edit, the thank went to the latest unthanked edit to that page. It didn't matter which edit you tried to give thanks for. This has been fixed. [18]
• Special:Statistics did not take newly created pages into account since 13 February 2018. Because of this the statistics are recreated. [19][20][21]

Changes later this week

• Users with version 10 of the Internet Explorer browser will no longer get JavaScript on Wikimedia wikis. If you use this browser on your computer, you can try upgrading to a newer version. [22]
• The Wikinews wikis will switch to use the Remex parsing library. This is to replace Tidy. It will happen on 27 February. Other wikis will be recommended to switch soon when they have fixed the errors that must be fixed. Tidy will be removed in the middle of 2018. [23][24]

Guideline and policy news

• The autoconfirmed article creation trial (ACTRIAL) is scheduled to end on 14 March 2018. The results of the research collected can be read on Meta Wiki.
• Community ban discussions must now stay open for at least 24 hours prior to being closed.
• A change to the administrator inactivity policy has been proposed. Under the proposal, if an administrator has not used their admin tools for a period of five years and is subsequently desysopped for inactivity, the administrator would have to file a new RfA in order to regain the tools.
• A change to the banning policy has been proposed which would specify conditions under which a repeat sockmaster may be considered de facto banned, reducing the need to start a community ban discussion for these users.

Technical news

• CheckUsers are now able to view private data such as IP addresses from the edit filter log, e.g. when the filter prevents a user from creating an account. Previously, this information was unavailable to CheckUsers because access to it could not be logged.
• The edit filter has a new feature contains_all that edit filter managers may use to check if one or more strings are all contained in another given string.

Miscellaneous

• Following the 2018 Steward elections, the following users are our new stewards: -revi, Green Giant, Rxy, There'sNoTime, علاء.

Obituaries

• Bhadani (Gangadhar Bhadani) passed away on 8 February 2018. Bhadani joined Wikipedia in March 2005 and became an administrator in September 2005. While he was active, Bhadani was regarded as one of the most prolific Wikipedians from India.

@Nicnote: yes there are, and it has general overall support (see meta:Requests for comment/Expand two-factor verification as an option for all users on all wikis) - HOWEVER there are many technical and process issues that need to be resolved first - notably that there is no practical way to save people from themselves when they break their 2FA. — xaosflux ^Talk 22:05, 3 March 2018 (UTC)

@Xaosflux: This looks very exciting. My thought would have been to implement telephone/text verification as is the case with Google, Facebook, etc. but I imagine that would involve a lot of resources - money being the main one. The tool will now warn in the JavaScript console if the configuration isn't correct. Soon Citoid will disable itself if the configuration isn't correct. Check that your wiki is configured correctly. • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 6 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 7 March. It will be on all wikis from 8 March (calendar).

Recent changes

• 3D models can now be uploaded to Commons. [30]
• Page Previews has been updated to use HTML for previews. This has fixed many issues. An A/B test was done on English and German Wikipedia to measure how it is used. Other changes were also made. [31]
• Some edits have to be checked against too many conditions before they can trigger an abuse filter. If that is the reason no filter is triggered the edit will be tagged for review. [32]
• Auto-saving has been added to the visual editor and the 2017 wikitext editor. Right now it is meant to help if your browser crashes or if you accidentally close a tab. [33]

Problems

• The abuse filter did not tag all edits that should have been tagged after last week's MediaWiki version had come to the wikis. It was fixed on 9 March (UTC). [34]

Changes later this week

Hi, Xaosflux. I have been thinking about starting a discussion to see if there is consensus to add a additional rule in the process of requesting page mover and template editor, "The discussion will be open at least 3 days", similar to EFH. @Alex Shih: I don't think its necessary, but that's just me. EFH is a very niche flag, and discussed in a non-standard forum - thus the need for a slight delay period. But if you want, start a discussion at WT:PERM and advertise it at: Wikipedia talk:Template editor, Wikipedia talk:Page mover, and WP:VPR. There are some very obvious  Not done's that hit PERM because it is so big, holding them open for 3 days will just add to the page. Personally I don't think there is much of a problem either with the current system, but I have been discussing this with SMcCandlish and I'll invite him to express his thoughts on this. To summarise my thoughts, WP:PERM/PM (95) and WP:PERM/TE (145) aren't really watched by many users. When qualified users are being approved by a single admin quickly without much discussion, usually it's not a problem (since nobody really knows about it) until that user runs into contentious situations. I think having 3 days window (obvious unqualified users should still be declined right away) will be the first step to invite more participants in PERM requests for these two user rights. It seems like a harmless safety valve to me; three days won't create much of a backlog issue, but it's sufficient time for people to raise objections about any RM-related battlegrounding or consensus-thwarting behavior, some of which has gotten pretty shameful. What prompted my involvement in the question is that at least four people have the PM bit who have a history of such behavior, including: taking positions against/for particular moves unmistakably based on who is advocating/opposing rather than on the merits of the case; taking positions pro/con a move explicitly against their own view just to back up a wikiproject's desire to WP:OWN a topic; trying to cut "back-channel" deals to avoid RM discussions and instead get "permission" from a hand-selected group of insiders in a topic to agree to a move without broader discussion; and running what amounted to a private wikiproject-based "anti-RM", using pet admins in the wikiproject to mass-move articles to titles preferred by that project's then-current handful of editors, without RM discussion and against MoS/NC guidelines (eventually had to be settled by RM, MR, and RfC back to back – months of drama – which naturally concluded to follow the guidelines); among other such issues. RM exists to foster site-wide discussion of our article titles and to thwart false consensus by would-be controllers of particular topics, some of whom are remarkably tendentious. The PM bit – which can be used to circumvent RM and for other disruption for a considerable span of time until enough objection is raised to get the bit taken away – should not be made available to people with a penchant for such activities. Yet a quick rubber-stamping process with a low bar for entry has made it so, even if on average the editors granted the bit know what they're doing and aren't problematic. That's the case largely because of increased scrutiny before granting it over the last year or so. So, a small increase in scrutiny, by the community rather than a particular admin, seems like a good idea.  — SMcCandlish ☏ ¢ 😼  16:07, 16 March 2018 (UTC)

Highlights for this newsletter include:

ARBCOM

• Magioladitis 2 happened, leading to further restrictions on Magioladitis (decision, summary).
• Betacommand 3 was proposed to be amended to lift the indefinite ban on Δ, but was unsuccessful (decision).
• A motion concerning Crosswiki issues (mostly concerning Wikidata) was passed (see discussion).

BAG

• Hersfold was removed from the BAG due to long term inactivity.

BRFAs

We currently have 6 open bot requests at Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval, and could use your help processing!

Discussions

While there were no large-scale bot-related discussion in the past few months, you can check WP:BOTN and WT:BOTPOL (and their corresponding archives) for smaller issues that came up.

New things

• WP:BOTDICT, a dictionary of common bot-related terms (see discussion).
• 6 inactive bots have been deflagged (see discussion).
• The 2017 Community Wishlist Survey happened. Two bot-related proposal passed, #6 deploy Article Alerts to other languages and #10 Commons deletion notification bot, although other entries may affect bots as well.
• Category:Wikipedia bots and its subcategories has had some cleanup. Bot-related pages that were historically important but are no longer of interests can be found in Category:Wikipedia bots (historical)
• The edit summary limit has been increased to 1000 characters (see T6715). If a bot you operate relied on the old truncation limit (255 characters), please review/update your code, as overly long summaries can be disruptive/annoying. If you want to use extra characters to have more information in your edit summary, please do so intelligently.
• You will soon be able to ping users from the edit summary (see T188469). If you wish to use this feature in your bot, please do so intelligently.

Upcoming

• HTML Tidy will be phased out in June 2018, or possibly earlier. This may affect some bots (see FAQ).

Hover highlighting

Hello Xaosflux, thank you for your assistance with templates. I would like your quick opinion on a feature. Please have a look here, in compare to here, to see the behavior difference on hovering over buttons/links. This has been enabled in Greek Wikipedia with this Mediawiki:Common.js code which has been tested for months and works fine there. @ManosHacker: I opened both of those links with a non-logged in browser, on elwiki for the most part hovering over "links" had no difference, and the button highlighting for the most part looked OK. I don't envision getting much support to but this type of styling in to articles (e.g. in collapsing navboxes), but it could have use elsewhere. The way to get this going in a non-push manner is to publish a userscript for it here, build some sample pages - then go float the idea at WP:VPI - if it gets moderate support an "opt-in" gadget could be tried to roll-out first. Reading again, opt-in gadget is not useful for help tools for newbies, except if it is enabled by default, and the only usefullness as a gadget would be to give the option to disable it on user basis, if it was proven buggy somehow. Spaces naming

Hello Xaosflux, I hope you are doing well! I wonder if you can assist me on a technical thing. I need to know where I can find the decleration of main space naming, for use with inputbox, for selective space searching. Spaces can be declared in inputbox to be searched, but I have a difficulty there. Spaces in other languages than English have different names. Main=Κύριος and User=Χρήστης in Greek. The magic word for main space returns returns an empty string, while for other spaces it returns a text. I know the name of main space in Greek and English, but how can I find it for other languages? @ManosHacker: namespace 0 (The "main" namespace) doesn't have "prefix" like all the other namespaces (that's why our articles aren't called Main:ArticleName). It does have a translated name for use in control menus (such as the MOVE menu) and you can see that on a project at MediaWiki:Blanknamespace (e.g. w:el:MediaWiki:Blanknamespace returns λήμματα). @ManosHacker: take a look at w:it:Utente:Xaosflux/Sandbox. There is a hack with the namespace magicword that can be used for everything except the "main" mainspace. This works because the default mw language is english and everything else is just a localization, so you can use english keywords like namespaces on other projects. You also hinted me that "User" word works in all languages (I thought differently due to the example I was given in Greek), so I keep it as default and only use the Greek and Nepali translations I know (for now). I don't know why I missed this. Probably because I'm a day ahead of the US where I am. There was even am oblique reference to our serial oposer. It think it was excellent - and proves that even our 'crats have a sense of humour. I have a sense of humour too (although many would disagree - except all those who know me personally); maybe I should run for 'crat one of the days and help with closures rather than voting. Colors (Indian TV Channel)

Hi, I saw you reply to an editor at Talk:Colors TV denying a request to create/separate the page after it was merged. Another editor has created a new page on the same topic (I believe) with a different name. I redirected it once to Viacom 18 as was done with the previous article, but an IP editor has reverted my edit. @Amorymeltzer: I expect any request to sort this by anything but canonical name will be denied, not it's not about adding/removing groups here - just the current display name of them. We can rename the project local name of the groups whenever we want to. Sorry, I think I muddled things with that second, throwaway comment. I was asking particularly about the lists of rights 'crats and sysops can add or remove; the sort order of those differ from each other. For example, here's the bureaucrat list:

• Add groups: Account creators, Administrators, Bureaucrats, Bots, Confirmed users and Pending changes reviewers
• Remove groups: IP block exemptions, Administrators, Account creators, Bots, Confirmed users and Pending changes reviewers

Is the proper procedure to speedy keep/close April fools day XfD nominations, just remove their transclusion from the logs, or just ignore them and never close? • Administrators who have been desysopped due to inactivity are now required to have performed at least one (logged) administrative action in the past 5 years in order to qualify for a resysop without going through a new RfA.
• Editors who have been found to have engaged in sockpuppetry on at least two occasions after an initial indefinite block, for whatever reason, are now automatically considered banned by the community without the need to start a ban discussion.
• The notability guideline for organizations and companies has been substantially rewritten following the closure of this request for comment. Among the changes, the guideline more clearly defines the sourcing requirements needed for organizations and companies to be considered notable.
• The six-month autoconfirmed article creation trial (ACTRIAL) ended on 14 March 2018. The post-trial research report has been published. A request for comment is now underway to determine whether the restrictions from ACTRIAL should be implemented permanently.

• There will soon be a calendar widget at Special:Block, making it easier to set expiries for a specific date and time.

• The Wikimedia Communities and Contributors survey is to be sent to participants around the world this week. If you are volunteer developer, and have contributed code to any pieces of MediaWiki, gadgets, or tools, please take 20 to 40 minutes to complete the survey.

Problems

• MediaWiki deployment train has been rolled back to version 1.31.0-wmf.26 on week 13, due to a multiplication of lost connections during MySQL queries. Some of the recent changes may have not been applied. They will be deployed next week. [50][51][52]
• The Notifications badge icons were overlapping other links. This has been fixed. [53]

• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 3 April. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 4 April. It will be on all wikis from 5 April (calendar).
• User subpages ending in .json will now be protected from other people editing them, like .js and .css pages already are. If you have a tool that stores static configuration, you can now use a subpage like User:Example/mygadget.json to do this without concerns. [54]
• Tidy will be replaced by RemexHtml on the next set of wikis. On April 4, we plan to turn off Tidy on all Wikiquotes (except frwikiquote) and Wikimedia chapters and user groups wikis. 23 wikis will have Tidy replaced this time. [55][56][57]
• AbuseFilter will transition to use OOUI starting April 4, and the rule editor will also be changed to a CodeEditor (ACE) similar to what is found on user JavaScript pages. The move to OOUI will continue over the next few weeks. [58] [59]
• In Special:Preferences, the preference "Reload the watchlist automatically whenever a filter is changed (JavaScript required)" is now only visible for users who have opt-out the New Filters for the Watchlist. [60]
• You can see names of individual abuse filters in Special:AbuseLog. Now if the name of an abuse filter contains some wikisyntax like links, it will not change to a link when displayed. [61]

Recent changes

• Some pages have templates that describe problems with that article. There is now more information for mobile readers and what is wrong with the article and how they could help fix it. [65]
• You can now thank users for many more actions than edits to a page. This was one of the top ten requests in the Wishlist Survey last year. [66]
• The sort order of categories will have errors for a short time starting Monday 9 April (UTC). We are upgrading versions of an internationalisation library (ICU) and using a script to update the database. This will take between a few hours and a few days depending on wiki size. You can read more details. [67]
• Tag filter titles will now work better on wikis where the tag filter title is in a language that is written in another direction than the language of that wiki. This could for example be an English title (written from left to right) on a Hebrew or an Arabic wiki (written from right to left). [68]

Problems

• The bookmark icon for saved filters on the recent changes page disappeared because of new icon changes. This has now been fixed. [69]
• For a week in March rollbacks got both the rollback and the undo tag on the recent changes page and other pages where you see tags. This has now been fixed. [70]

• Profiling statistics for an abuse filter tell how often edits match the filter. The statistics for the abuse filters were reset after 10000 actions. Wikis can now decide to reset it more or less often. They can file a phabricator task to do so. [72]
• Abuse filters will now treat integers and floats more precisely. For example, 5/2 was rounded down to 2 but will now be 2.5 and 2*4 will be the integer 8 and not the floating-point number 8.0. Division values are the only ones changed. For the rest only strict comparisons (=== and !==) will be affected leaving the values unchanged. [73][74]

Permissions

There was a discussion on User talk:Fram#User rights, it mentioned you and your actions related with restoration of permissions. Discussion concerned unwarranted removal of permissions of OccultZone who never misused the user rights and the concerning account is his main account.

I am posting here since you are proficient in this matter and also due to restriction on forum shopping imposed on the editor.

Permissions were removed only for socking as per comments by desysoped admin,[80] but such removal violates WP:INDEFRIGHTS as mentioned there. His removal of user rights while being involved and failure to restore them when the user asked about restoration while he was already unblocked, such happenings seem suspicious and more like a revenge.

Case is crystal clear and given your proficiency in WP:PERM I believe that you should consider restoring the user rights of OccultZone. It will probably also help in reducing potential drama. Capitals00 (talk) 19:08, 11 April 2018 (UTC)

Weird not-patrolled thing going on

Hey, I was talking with TonyBallioni about some odd pages I've come across, namely José Angel Figueroa and Quartet Skaz. Both went through AFC, neither are indexed, but neither are marked as patrolled and I can't "un-patrol" them. Other than Vycl1994 editing both of the pages (they're autopatrolled) what could possibly cause this issue? Primefac (talk) 22:05, 24 March 2018 (UTC) (please ping on reply)

@Primefac: so there was a lot going on with these pages, including some deletions, moves, etc. Lets look at your first problem first, neither are indexed. The page information 1 & 2 says indexing is allowed, and a review of the source shows that neither one has the usual nodindex directive (<meta name="robots" content="noindex,nofollow"/>). Although not everyone leaves a comment on the articles, I'm sure that the newspaer has been conspicuous by its absence. Not only does the publication need a firm editorial board, but it also needs more contributors. One way to approach this would be to make more users, especially new ones, aware of its existence. As you maintain the watchlist notices, what do you think of the possibility of a monthly watchlist notice on the lines of: 'The new issue of our monthly newspaper The Signpost is now out. @Kudpung: I don't think a "monthly" notice is good for this, however a one-time notice provided that it can be coordinated with having the main SP editors ready to do something with anyone following the call-to-action seems reasonable. The SP editors, such as they are (we're trying to get an active team together - and that probably won't include me) would be aware of their schedule. What I meant above was basically the notice being published as soon as a new SP is published. I inderstand why your Fluxbot edit of User talk:TickTockOnTheClock was made, but it was unhelpful. I was informing the user that his/her signature generates a lint error and I provided a workaround. You zapped the old signature, which zapped the proof that my workaround signature was substantially the same. I have notified over 600 users on their talk pages that their signatures have lint errors, in every case reproducing their old signature. Yes, doing so adds at least one more lint error, but it serves to end an unlimited source of lint errors. Anti-lint bot operations should prioritize article space and de-prioritize user talk space.—Anomalocaris (talk) 17:32, 3 April 2018 (UTC)

Hi @Anomalocaris: in those cases are you cleaning up all the lint errors you are causing here? It looks like we're both on the same side of killing off Linter errors so that's good! I'll look at adding some delay on user_talk: to those users more time to review them first. "GamerGate(Controversy)" Article protetion level

In my opinion, the article on the Gamergate movement was largely made up of bias at the time that you gave it a protection level. The article portrayed the movement as being founded on hate instead of being a response to hate. The fact that it happened on the internet was the cause for the constant flame wars being started by each side of the controversy (not just the Gamergater side). Things have largely cooled down since the controversy started and I think people are ready to talk about the controversy in an unbiased way. Please consider updating it to a semi-protected level. Hi @111JoeI111: the Gamergate controversy article has been very contentious and been the subject a lot of behavioral issues. Please note, while I am the last protecting admin, it was only in a technical aspect from what I can recall, prior to the extended confirmed protection levels existence we had a hack with the edit filter on certain pages - from what I can recall I migrated pages from the edit filter back to the new level when it was available. That being said, I suggest you start a new topic at Talk:Gamergate controversy regarding your suggestion first to see where people more knowledgeable about the article and its related situations stand. @Lionelt: that list page is generated automatically from Wikipedia talk:Mass message senders/Empty Shells, we can't specify the list type; and as for type actual lists (e.g. User:Xaosflux/SandboxMMS2) that is also software generated. We certainly can import the dewiki history since this is new and the "ideas" on the page were presumably all developed on dewiki initially; also because the German Wikipedia really likes to use history imports it keeps up good relations with them. Hi.
After reading comment by 28bytes, I was wondering if it is possible for a sysop to block themselves. From the blocklog of Coffee, apparently it is possible. Hi @Usernamekiran:, administrators can block anyone using their (block) access. Blocked users normally can't do much, however administrators can also unblock themselves because they have a special permission, (unblockself). @Kudpung: Hi there, I checked the mass message log back to 2015 and don't see any errors related to "limit" here or on meta:. I've personally processed mass mailings for 5000 recipients per list (most recently during WP:ACE2017). A ticket search indicates that phab:T192690 is open, it appears to only apply to wikidata right now, and is due to an error where the "bot" process was subject to the editor rate limit. If this were to occur here the log error would look like this. So nutshell: we should be fine but it is worth checking the log after sending. @Kudpung: that is something different, it means that something (like a mass message process) was to "fast" to get examined by the AbuseFilter. (Its actually much more complicated) - but it does not prevent anything from saving/delivering. Recent changes

• The parameter for unpatrolled edits in recent changes filters changed name. You might need to update saved filters and links. [81]

Problems

• We are migrating wikis from Tidy to Remex. Because of a bug the 250 wikis which do not yet use Remex were switched on 23 April. This is two months early. This meant that pages with broken wikitext showed wrongly to readers. The bug was undone the next day. You can help fix broken wikitext to avoid this problem when your wiki switches. Tidy will be removed on all wikis before July 2018. You can follow the process on Phabricator. [82]

Changes later this week

• You will be able use CodeMirror in the 2017 wikitext editor on all wikis. CodeMirror helps with syntax highlighting. It has previously been a beta feature and only available on wikis with scripts that are written from left to right. [83]
• When an administrator blocks someone they will have a calendar they can use to choose when the block ends. This is to make it easier to pick a specific date. [84]
• You can soon turn on the Performance Inspector in the Editing section in your preferences. It shows information about the performance of pages. This could be the size of modules in the page, how many CSS selectors are defined on the page and how many are used, or the size of the images on the page. This tool is intended to help editors fix pages that load slowly. [85]
• There is a new abuse filter function called equals_to_any. You can use it to check if its first argument is equal (===) to any of the following ones. For example you can use it to check if the page's namespace is amongst a given set of values in a more compact way than you could earlier. You can read more on mediawiki.org.
• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 1 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 2 May. It will be on all wikis from 3 May (calendar).

Guideline and policy news

• The ability to create articles directly in mainspace is now indefinitely restricted to autoconfirmed users.
• A proposal is being discussed which would create a new "event coordinator" right that would allow users to temporarily add the "confirmed" flag to new user accounts and to create many new user accounts without being hindered by a rate limit.

Technical news

• AbuseFilter has received numerous improvements, including an OOUI overhaul, syntax highlighting, ability to search existing filters, and a few new functions. In particular, the search feature can be used to ensure there aren't existing filters for what you need, and the new equals_to_any function can be used when checking multiple namespaces. One major upcoming change is the ability to see which filters are the slowest. This information is currently only available to those with access to Logstash.
• When blocking anonymous users, a cookie will be applied that reloads the block if the user changes their IP. This means in most cases, you may no longer need to do /64 range blocks on residential IPv6 addresses in order to effectively block the end user. It will also help combat abuse from IP hoppers in general. This currently only occurs when hard-blocking accounts.
• The block notice shown on mobile will soon be more informative and point users to a help page on how to request an unblock, just as it currently does on desktop.
• There will soon be a calendar widget at Special:Block, making it easier to set expiries for a specific date and time.

Arbitration

• The Arbitration Committee is seeking additional clerks to help with the arbitration process.

Obituaries

• Lankiveil (Craig Franklin) passed away in mid-April. Lankiveil joined Wikipedia on 12 August 2004 and became an administrator on 31 August 2008. During his time with the Wikimedia community, Lankiveil served as an oversighter for the English Wikipedia and as president of Wikimedia Australia.

Abuse filter users should make sure the right block length is used and change them if needed. This is only for filters where how long blocks last had been changed. [90]

Edit notice creation request

I managed to create User:DeprecatedFixerBot/status/Editnotice, however, it does not show up and states it has an "invalid name". Upon further reading, I discovered that user subpage edit notices can only be created by admins/template editors. I am wondering if you could possibly create the edit notice with the content currently present in User:DeprecatedFixerBot/status/Editnotice? The edit notice is a "last warning" of sorts to keep entries json valid as the parser (in current state) needs all page text there to be json formatted or it will fail. Thank you for transcluding that. I was thinking of changing the formatting, but I wasn't sure how to (how did you?). I also want anyone (extended confirmed) to be able to edit it if they notice problems with the bot, which is the entire point of the status page as I don't personally need a control panel, it is for other users as a shutoff (I can always go 'CTRL + C' and kill it in the console). I don't think there is a way for JSON formatted pages to be editable by anyone other than the user they are a subpage of, but if I am wrong, I am all ears. I can't edit it from this account, but can from the bot account. Thank you for the offer, but I think the edit notice is fine for the time being (thanks again for adding that and transcluding it so I can edit if need be). On a semi-related topic, when logged in as DeprecatedFixerBot viewing the history of the above linked sandbox, I had the option to "edit tags of selected revisions". I have never noticed that before. I don't have that on this account, so I assume that it is part of the bot flag? Likewise, is changing the content model part of the template editor/admin toolset? @TheSandDoctor: changing applied tags is limited to bots, edit filter managers and admins. Normal users can add a tag only (and not natively in the webui). Hi. It seems that you've deleted Allan Banford in error and restored it back. The page before your deletion consisted of only 6 revisions beginning with the March 2017 one but you've restored 290 other revisions that were deleted previously. Recent changes

• You can now use global preferences on most wikis. This means you can set preferences for all wikis at the same time. Before this you had to change them on each individual wiki. Global preferences will come to the Wikipedias later this week. [96][97]
• It is now easier for blocked mobile users to see why they were blocked. [98]
• Wikidata now supports lexicographical data. This helps describe words.
• There is now a checkbox on Special:ListUsers to let you see only users in temporary user groups. [99]
• Some rare invisible Unicode characters have recently been banned from page titles. This includes soft hyphens (U+00AD) and left-to-right (U+2066) and right-to-left (U+2067) isolate markers. Existing pages with these characters will soon be moved by a script. [100]
• There's a new Wikimedia Foundation team to support the Wikimedia technical communities. It's called the Technical Engagement team. Most of the team members did similar work in other teams before this. [101]

Problems

• Some translatable pages are showing old translations instead of latest ones. The cause of this issue has been fixed. We will update all pages automatically to show the latest translations. [102]

• There will be a new special page named PasswordPolicies. This page gives information about the password rules for each user group on that wiki. [103]
• A new way to see moved paragraphs in diffs is coming to most wikis. This is to make it easier to find the moved paragraphs and the changes in them. [104]
• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 29 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 30 May. It will be on all wikis from 31 May (calendar).
• Wikis can enable Citoid to provide automatic reference look-up in the visual editor and the 2017 wikitext editor. This is complex. The tool will now disable itself if the configuration isn't correct. It has warned about this in the JavaScript console since February. Check that your wiki is configured correctly. You can ask for help if you need it. [105]

• Some wikis will switch to use the Remex parsing library. This is to replace Tidy. It will happen on 30 May and 13 June. Wikis with fewer than 100 linter issues in the main namespace in all high-priority linter categories will switch. This includes Wikidata. Tidy will probably be removed on all wikis in the first week of July. [108][109]

Possible bug

I reverted FluxBots edit here as it had messed up the way I had formatted the comment. FluxBot deleted 2 closing <code/> Comment mentions 'self-closing' - ... I agree for sure, my edit was an error, I normally mach on an open tag, more, then a malformed closing tag. I had a prior cleanup that was resolving a one-off bad single tag only, from what I can see tell this was the only page hit by the error - but will be on the look out. • There is a new version of Pywikibot. Pywikibot is a tool to automate tasks on MediaWiki wikis. [111]

Problems

• The MonoBook skin was changed to make it work better for mobile users. This caused some problems. The change was rolled back to fix them. The new version is now back on the wikis. MonoBook users can opt out from the new responsive design. [112]

• The new filters for edit review tools and interface for watchlists will leave beta. For most wikis this will happen on 18 June. For the rest it will happen on 25 June. [113][114]

Requesting protection for the Lindelöf hypothesis page

Many thanks for pointing out that the page isn't protected. I was trying to request protection owing repeated removals of one of the sections on what I believe to be inappropriate grounds. How can I do this? I thought the way was to add "{{edit fully-protected|answered=yes}}" to the talk page but clearly I was mistaken. All I'm seeking is a protection of the main page while one or more administrators review what has been happening and advise on the best way to proceed. Guideline and policy news

• Following a successful request for comment, administrators are now able to add and remove editors to the "event coordinator" group. Users in the event coordinator group have the ability to temporarily add the "confirmed" flag to new user accounts and to create many new user accounts without being hindered by a rate limit. Users will no longer need to be in the "account creator" group if they are in the event coordinator group.
• Following an AN discussion, all pages with content related to blockchain and cryptocurrencies, broadly construed, are now under indefinite general sanctions.

Technical news

• IP-based cookie blocks should be deployed to English Wikipedia in June. This will cause the block of a logged-out user to be reloaded if they change IPs. This means in most cases, you may no longer need to do /64 range blocks on residential IPv6 addresses in order to effectively block the end user. It will also help combat abuse from IP hoppers in general. For the time being, it only affects users of the desktop interface.
• The Wikimedia Foundation's Anti-Harassment Tools team will build granular types of blocks in 2018 (e.g. a block from uploading or editing specific pages, categories, or namespaces, as opposed to a full-site block). Feedback on the concept may be left at the talk page.
• There is now a checkbox on Special:ListUsers to let you see only users in temporary user groups.
• It is now easier for blocked mobile users to see why they were blocked.

Arbitration

• A recent technical issue with the Arbitration Committee's spam filter inadvertently caused all messages sent to the committee through Wikipedia (i.e. Special:EmailUser/Arbitration Committee) to be discarded. If you attempted to send an email to the Arbitration Committee via Wikipedia between May 16 and May 31, your message was not received and you are encouraged to resend it. Messages sent outside of these dates or directly to the Arbitration Committee email address were not affected by this issue.

Miscellaneous

• In early May, an unusually high level of failed login attempts was observed. The WMF has stated that this was an "external effort to gain unauthorized access to random accounts". Under Wikipedia policy, administrators are required to have strong passwords. To further reinforce security, administrators should also consider enabling two-factor authentication. A committed identity can be used to verify that you are the true account owner in the event that your account is compromised and/or you are unable to log in.

• The MonoBook skin has been optimised for mobile devices. It now looks different. [116]
• Planet Wikimedia collects blogs about Wikimedia. It will now use the Rawdog feed aggregator to do this instead of Planet. [117][118]
• Redirect links in Special:WhatLinksHere now link to the original page and not the target page. This was done earlier and changed the used messages on some pages. This was a problem for wikis that customized the message. A new change fixed this by using the old messages with one more parameter for customization. Wikis that already changed their customized messages will have to move the customization back again. [119]

Problems

• You will not be able to edit some wikis between 06:00 and 06:30 UTC on 13 June. You can see if your wiki is one of them.
• MassMessage did not work 24–28 May. This is also why last week's Tech News was late. [120]

@JustBerry: all groups have been removed (ECU left as it is not designed to be revoked) and an account block has been placed. Should you return you may request unblocking at your own talk page. I suggest you set your password to something strong and ensure your email is linked to a secure email address as well. • Some old web browsers will not be able to read the Wikimedia wikis. This is because they use an insecure way to connect to them. This means that we get less security for everyone else too. This affects about 0.08% of all traffic to the Wikimedia wikis. This affects for example those who read Wikipedia on a PlayStation 3. [124][125]
• The new filters for edit review tools and interface for watchlists will leave beta. Because there is no new MediaWiki version this week it will happen on 25 June for most wikis. For the rest it will happen in early July. [126][127]
• All wikis that have not already done so will switch to use the Remex parsing library on 5 July. This is to replace Tidy. You can help fix remaining errors. [128]

• PAWS, our JupyterHub system, got an upgrade and a logo. Several bugs should be fixed.

Problems

• When a link text was in italics or had other formatting you could sometimes not edit it in the visual editor. This has now been fixed. [129][130]

• Content translation users who translate between any two of Arabic, English, French, Japanese and Russian will be asked to be part of a research project. This is to create better tools for translating articles. [131]
