I haven't found a reference to the news report I witnessed, on television in Dallas, Texas. But I did find a quite a bit of material about melanin and how it protects different organisms from UV and some gamma radiation http://www.springerlink.com/content/v98j0f84vqnr6u5d/ but I don't know enough about html to add the reference to the Wikipedia.
