Sales data edit

I don't know where you are getting this sales data, but to update these numbers, you must provide sources or update the current sources attached to the data. Please see WP:VAR and WP:RS. Rehevkor 10:51, 15 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

You will need to cite these sources in the articles when updating them, see WP:REFSTART for instructions. Per WP:VG/S VG Chartz is not a reliable source, especially for sales figures. Any inconsistencies should with numbers should be brought up on respective talk pages if there are no reliable sources to address them. Wikipedia is not usually the "source" for sales date we (usually) use data already published in reliable sources. Rehevkor 17:10, 15 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
The sales data recently added to List of best-selling game consoles and Sega Saturn also do not appear to be reliably sourced. Self published sources such as RetroGamerVX are not considered reliable, and that site itself appears to be a dump from the Wikipedia articles at some point in the past, which again means it cannot be relied upon. The other source appears to be a user-generated timeline, and as such isn't reliable either (the rules would be similar to forums or Wikis in that case). Hi. Your addition to List of best-selling video games has been reverted as, again, the sources provided are not sufficiently reliable. The "Listal" source is particularly worrying since it is a user-generated list, is sourced to VG Chartz (which itself is not considered a reliable for Wikipedia; see Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games/Sources#Unreliable sources) and contradicts your source for Sonic 1 by about 11 million. I urge you read over WP:RS and properly understand our policy on what is a reliable source (and why the policy is in place) before making any more additions that require rigorous sourcing (such as sales figures, which seems to be mainly what you've added so far). Seriously, please stop adding info using unreliable sources. I shall go through the links you added to List of best-selling video games and try to explain why they should not be used.
  1. http://www.segasaturn.co.uk/games/pal/N/nights/index.html - This site appears to fall under the self published category as the content is contributed by the users of the site. See WP:RS#Self-published and questionable sources
  2. http://www.clickonline.com/Games/...Sonic_the_Hedgehog/658/-Ireland - this link doesn't work, but even if it did, the site falls into the same category as segasaturn.co.uk.
  3. http://www.segaretro.org/Sega_Interactive - this page is a wiki, and as such cannot be used as a source, since all content is editable by anyone.
  4. http://reference.findtarget.com/search/Streets_of_Rage - this is a mirror of the Wikipedia article on Streets of Rage, so shouldn't be used for the same reason as the last one. (To quote from WP:RS - Wikipedia articles (or Wikipedia mirrors) are not reliable sources for any purpose. See WP:RS#Primary, secondary, and tertiary sources for full text.) The Wikipedia page itself cited the same "Listal" source as you did previously, which has now been removed (see previous message for explanation).
Given your recent edits, might I recommend that for the time being you ask on article talk pages before adding any figures, at least until you get a proper grasp of what is and isn't a reliable source. You certainly seem to be acting in good faith but you really need to grasp what is and isn't considered verifiable (and therefore suitable for Wikipedia).
