FINAL REFLECTIONS ON WIKIEDU: AFPRL290.26

During this course, I learned more about hip-hop history in a way that I and some of my peers did not expect. From the beginning, we were encouraged not to think of history as linear because life does not unfold that way. Instead, I had to challenge myself to look beyond the dominant narratives and listen to the voices hidden in the mix. I think that learning about the pillars of hip-hop helped me with this, reminding me that the MC is not the only important player, although hip-hop has increasingly shifted attention away from the other elements.
Even though I always had the power to think about hip-hop the way that I wanted to, I could see some of the ways that media and literature about hip-hop affected my thinking. A lot of the published resources that are circulated are not written by or fully reflective of people like me, because much like on Wikipedia, the experiences of people of color that have not been reinforced and named “credible” are subject to removal from the conversation. I was really interested in some of the topics that my peers were editing on Wikipedia because many of them made connections from hip-hop to themes in their own lives that they were passionate about, like visual art or LGBT representation in media or activism in recent history. Their contributions added a unique perspective to the dialogues that are already happening. I hope that the next students who have the chance to take this course will be able to share more about their experiences and the music that they enjoy because our last class opened up a good opportunity to talk about how or why certain themes or styles in hip-hop appeal to us, because it might say something about our socialization, beliefs, etc.
