In addition to the spamming the username is inappropriate. From Wikipedia:Username inappropriate usernames: "Usernames intended for spamming or advertisement: Accounts with usernames that advertise a particular website, company, etc.". Hmmm. I think we should discuss this. If the intent is genuinely to link to the content of the Cliff Notes, and they are intended to be offered freely via the web, then this has the potential to be an asset. If Wiley are actually offering this, then we should work with them. On the other hand, spamming is evil. Some dialogue, please, WileyPublishing. We always assume good faith here, I hope. Listen, I'm a summer intern here at Wiley & Sons. They just want to increase trafficking on the website for CliffNotes. All of the information is free, and only intended to help the users of Wikipedia. Why not work together like he said? We Would add content, but that defeats the purpose of receiving traffic. I'm sure you acted in good faith, and you certainly didn't do anything wrong in the sense of vandalizing articles or anything like that. However, while it may have been in keeping with what your bosses want, it's contrary to Wikipedia policies to use Wikipedia in order to increase traffic to a site you wish to promote. And, as pgk pointed out, usernames that advertise a website or a company are considered inappropriate. If you are interested in editing articles, as opposed to going from one article to the next in order to add links to the same website, you should be able to register a new account in the next few days when your autoblock expires. (The block on your username is permanent; the automatic block on your IP only lasts a few days.) But I get the impression that you're not actually interested in becoming a genuine editor at Wikipedia, only in using Wikipedia for advertising your employer's website. I can understand why you would wish to do that, but it's something that we simply don't allow. AnnH ♫ 18:00, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

Yea, um well you make some sense, but in another sense, there are a number of links to sparknotes and other study guide websites. So what's the difference? Just because I work for the company shouldn't matter, you're lucky I'm honest as opposed to being, "hotguy512" and posting random links for my employers. The point is to help the users, because obviously people in need of help for "Catcher in the Rye" are going to visit wikipedia to research the topic. Sure you guys have your policies and what not, but you should strongly consider reviewing these bs policies, because I'm not very much like a guy standing outside your store stopping your prospective customers and soliciting products, no I'm the guy at the bottom of your page saying, "need more information? just check out CliffsNotes." I don't wish to advertise.. i wish to do my job..

Whoa there. If your job is to insert promotional links into Wikipedia then my job is to make sure you don't. If, on the other hand, your job is with Wiley and Wiley have given you permission to edit Wikipedia on their time, and Wiley have made available the Cliff Notes via stable weblinks that will not change over time and will yield full text as they do now, then Wiley is to be congratulated, and you should, in my view, be more than welcome to add these, in the correct alphabetical order, to the external links sections of the articles. Alternatively you could email me a list of the ones which will be available online and I will take it to the Village Pump to see what the community thinks. For myself, I think the availability of Cliff notes online is great, and I hope that some of the more obscure works will also be covered. I'm wondering how Wiley intends to sustain their revenue stream form this franchise while offering the content free. Maybe it's just a subset? It would help if you could clarify. I agree a broader discussion is required before including links such as these, it is readily apparent from following the links why the want the increased traffic, they have advertising and sell content as well as the free content available. With all due respect, corporations like Wiley have an abundance of links and sponsors. There is very rarely a large retail company that does not include banners and sponsors on their webpages. This is strictly for the user to obtain more information thanks to Wiley.--WileyPublishing 19:41, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

My job is for Wiley, I work in their Hoboken, NJ offices.. and might I add the Hoboken article in Wikipedia is extremely helpful and very well done.. moving right along, Wiley offers the material online, but somehow, and I'm not sure how because let's be serious I'm just an intern, manages to obtain a substantial revenue. We're offering this simply for informational purposes as I said before. Obviously it allows Wiley to advertise in some sense, but the link is directly linked to the information on the book itself.. It is not a link to an order form, or the Wiley general website, it is strictly intended to link the user directly to more information on the topic. That's it, plain and simple. Now I have a rather large excel document here with the list of titles, the url of wikipedia, and the url of the cliffnotes, if you would like to see this document please provide me with your e-mail address and I will send this to you via my Wiley e-mail address, just to clarify that I do indeed work for them.. This is being discussed on the Village Pump right now - Wikipedia:Village pump (policy)#Cliffs Notes on works of literature - should we link them?. I don't mind unblocking you to take part in that discussion, on the understanding that you don't reinsert the links. If you need an admin to email your boss and tell them what the issue is, I will do that. You can mail me using the "email this user" feature from my talk page. Does that work for you? can somebody please unblock me so I can join in on the discussion in the village pump? I have a lot to say, or even copy and paste this.. CliffNotes is supplementary material that every high school and college kid uses instead of reading a book, however many teachers these days have only required the reading of CliffNotes. These links can enable students to reach CliffNotes with ease. A number of the books' pages on which I "spammed" already had links to study guides. Furthermore, if you feel threatened by the content of CliffNotes in feeling it may take away from Wikipedia, then I'm not sure you really understand the point. By adding a link at the bottom of the page, the person, who has most likely already read through your content, can then do more research and possibly get a different perspective on the book's meaning through CliffNotes. What about adding them as references as opposed to external links? And thank you to all who have congratulated me on my honesty, I'm being as sincere as possible about this issue. Last but not least, if the verdict is against my actions, what about a CliffNotes page on Wikipedia? A brief history, a background, some facts, and then maybe a list of links for various books. I know I said that would be last, but I was unaware of the message I received the first time while posting these links, and then I was eventually blocked. Hey -- I'm denying your unblock request, but let me explain what the deal is. You weren't blocked for your linkspam behavior, as is being discussed above, though that probably drew attention to yourself. Rather, you are being blocked because your username is inappropriate for Wikipedia. If you want to edit WP in the future, you'll have to log out and create yourself a new account, and then you should be able to edit; just take a look at WP:U for guidelines on how to choose a good name.
