Re:A inorganic kerogen origin

I deleted it under A7 to include possible G12 copyist, the article itself looked be a pare presenting a theory on fracking, but the copyvio report resulted in a page generated in Russian. It was given as apx 7.5% probability of copyvio, too low to justify a G12 deletion, and since I can not read Russian I included alleged only to cover the bases. That being said, if you want try again, go for it, just make sure its tidier this time around. TomStar81 (Talk) 20:30, 29 November 2022 (UTC)

Actually, I misread the license. It is 4.0 and not 3.0 so it actually is not compatible with our licensing. -- Whpq (talk) 20:33, 29 November 2022 (UTC)
Strike that. I really misread. The licensing is compatible. There is an English version of the PDF that contains text. In any case, it is also in DRAFT where it should be because as written, it really doesn't make sense to a general audience. -- Whpq (talk) 20:46, 29 November 2022 (UTC)

Wikipedia: Articles deletion

Hello Whpq i want to know the reason of why my article is deleted from wikipedia please give me reasons of deletion of "Shams Talat"

Why i don't received updated message in my talk section. Please explain me the reasons thanks. Simon Joe Dispenza (talk) 15:44, 1 December 2022 (UTC)

Non-Free Files

I have a confession to make: I didn't read the fine print of the non-free criteria. But in the interest of avoiding copyright infringements, I uploaded it with a non-free, fair-use tag so as for no aggravation of copyrights and policy. Thank you for reaching out to me, if I need to address the images in other matters, you should certainly let me know. ContributingHelperOnTheSide (talk) 10:31, 3 December 2022 (UTC)

di-replaceable fair use

Hello Whpq, I see you've tagged the LDV Convoy images for deletion stating "These vehicles are still in use. No proper explanation as to why a free image cannot be made."

Regarding your last point - Not many models with the roof lights were made - no free images exist at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:LDV_Convoy_buses or at https://flickr.com/search/?text=ldv%20convoy&license=4%2C5%2C9%2C10 and imho text alone cannot fully explain the images, I would be happy to make further changes to the images (either further resize or lower the quality if that could help?, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 15:52, 3 December 2022 (UTC)

I've reduced the size further and reduced the quality but something tells me this isn't enough - If it isn't enough then would I need only need to show the roof of the vehicles only ?, I recall having to crop a non-free image before but no idea why or what for, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 17:13, 3 December 2022 (UTC)
off-topic discussion
(talk page watcher)@Davey2010: You shouldn't remove the template's that Whpq added, but should instead follow the instructions given in the template if you disagree with Whpq's assessment. FWIW, I agree with Whpq's assessment and can see zero justification for the non-free use of either of these files just to show that one version of the vehicle has flashing orange lights. You can disagree with this reassessment and make this known by following the instructions in the templates. You can also request that this be further discussed at WP:FFD if you like. Continuing to remove the templates before they are reviewed by an administrator is likely going to be considered disruptive. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:03, 3 December 2022 (UTC)
You should butt out and not stick your nose in where it's not wanted. You must live a very sad life if the only thing you can do for the entirety of today is revert me!. We have over 5 million articles here yet you choose to revert me .... Very sad indeed.
Anyway I'm waiting for Whpq's response and once they've replied I will either have the files CSD'd or I will follow the instructions. I simply dont want the file deleted before Whpq replies, Have a fantastic day!. –Davey2010Talk 21:16, 3 December 2022 (UTC)
You should probably be careful of WP:NPA and WP:ASPERSIONS. None of what I posted above could be seen as an attack against you in any way. I re-added the templates because there's zero justification for their non-free use and I would've tagged the files as such myself if I had noticed them before Whpq. This has nothing to do with you or reverting you, and I certainly don't need your permission to tag a file for inappropriate non-free use. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:22, 3 December 2022 (UTC)
You reverted/readded the template because you saw my comment here and felt you had to " do what's right". You couldn't wait till Whpq replied, You had to stick your oar in where it wasn't wanted and in turn create a hostile and disruptive environment. You're a sad individual. –Davey2010Talk 21:29, 3 December 2022 (UTC)
As the lights part is mentioned in the article I therefore thought it was okay to add an image showing it ?, Is there no way at all one image can stay providing any suggested amendments are made (ie roof cropping)?, Would combining 2 roof images into one work no?,
Of course if you believe there's no reason for these to exist then I will CSD them, Many thanks, Warm Regards, — Preceding unsigned comment added by Davey2010 (talkcontribs)

@Davey2010: - I tagged them as replaceable because the non-free usage rationales included the statement "This should be deleted once a free image showing the roof lights becomes available" which looked to me that there is an expectation that a freely licensed image could be had in the future. Even if no free images currently exist, if once could be created, then WP:NFCC#1 is not met. Given that it might not be the case, then there needs to be more discussion. I also am not convinced that WP:NFCC#8 is met for the article. Given that there needs a fuller discussion, I will remove the current tagging, and put the files through FFD where there is higher visibility to other editors and we can have a fuller discussion. As for cropping, that would be in regard to WP:NFCC#3b. I have no concerns about needing to crop. In fact, I think that would be silly as the context of the light placement on the vehicle would be compromised if that were done. -- Whpq (talk) 03:42, 4 December 2022 (UTC)

Hi Whpq, Ahhh I see, I thought because no image existed now that an image could be uploaded, I'll be honest despite being here for years I've never really understood NFCC, My plan with cropping was to merge both crops into one image and then in the image caption note that there were no other differences but maybe that wouldn't of worked either - I guess I was just looking at ways that the files could be kept,
Anyway I apologise for reverting you and I apologise for everything that happened on your talkpage yesterday,
Thank you for your help today and for sending the files to FFD your help is very much appreciated, Take care Whpq, Warm Regards, –Davey2010Talk 12:26, 4 December 2022 (UTC)

Copyright gets very complicated. Most images are copyrighted by default. If you are not sure, then the just assume the image is copyrighted. Images that are licensed with an acceptable free license will have some sort of note with a license statement. If you are unsure about the license status of an image, you can ask for help at Media Copyright Questions. You can also get more general help as a new editor at the Tea House. -- Whpq (talk) 18:03, 29 December 2022 (UTC)

File:Bangladesh Football Federation.svg

Hi Whpq. Sorry to drop some drama in your lap on day one of 2023, but perhaps you might want to monitor WP:AN#JJMC89 bot deleted the Bangladesh Football Federation logo from their National Team pages (both men & women) and User talk:JJMC89#JJMC89 bot deleted the official Bangladesh Football Federation logo from their all National Football Team pages since you closed the relevant FFD and removed the badge file from the various individual team articles. The file seems that have been re-added to the team articles (at least in the case Bangladesh national football team which I've removed again leaving a more detailed edit summary than the bot typically does). The bot won't stop each time the file is re-added without a valid rationale and a valid rationale can't really be added because of the FFD; so, eventually someone is going to end up being blocked for edit warring unless they can be convinced to slow down. One thing about the {{oldffdfull}} template you added to File talk:Bangladesh Football Federation.svg is that it only states "keep"; in some similar cases, I've seen "keep" being for clarified as being "keep for the main article about the federation, but remove from the individual team articles" or something similar. Not sure any of those wanting to use the file are even bothering to look at it's talk page or would even care if they did, but maybe clarifying things a bit would help some others. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:27, 31 December 2022 (UTC)

I'll keep that in mind for future closes. Thanks. -- Whpq (talk) 01:16, 1 January 2023 (UTC)
Hi Whpq. File:Bangladesh national football team logo.png was uploaded about an hour ago and added to the men's and women's team article by someone. I'm not sure if it's just a coincidence or it's an attempt to get around the FFD for the svg file. Even though it's a lighter shade of blue with slightly different ball and olive (?) branch design than File:Bangladesh Football Federation.svg, the differences appear minor from a copyright standpoint and it's basically the same as the file discussed at FFD. If the new png version didn't say "Bangledesh Football Federation" but was more specific to the teams, then perhaps that might be enough of a difference. It, however, just appears to an updated version of the federation's logo per bff.com.bd and probably should be treated as such and added to the federation's article instead. This has happened in the past with other soccer team logos. Sometimes it's a misunderstanding and the uploader of the second file just isn't aware of the FFD or is aware and mistakenly assumes it doesn't apply to any new files uploaded. Other times, it's someone thinking that nobody will notice since it's a different file name. Usually, one of the files end up speedily deleted for some reason, but I don't remember under which criterion (perhaps Explicit, Fastily or JJMC89 know). Anyway, I'm just letting you know about this and will leave it for you to deal with as you deem appropriate. -- Marchjuly (talk) 12:00, 5 January 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for letting me know. It's a different editor so probably not an attempt to get around the FFD. -- Whpq (talk) 14:23, 5 January 2023 (UTC)
You're welcome. As I mentioned above, the two files are slightly different, but those are only cosmetic differences (at least in my opinion). It's possible that the png file is an updated version of the svg file; however, the file format is different so I don't think it the svg can be updated with the png using the "Upload a new version of this file" link. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:41, 5 January 2023 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free image File:GuhanagariBookCover.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:GuhanagariBookCover.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Bogart, Dylan, Frank v. Hal, Spock, et al.

I would appreciate any guidance you are willing to share regarding the images that you cite on my Talk page. I'm pretty new to wp editing and have struggled a bit to understand exactly what's permitted "fair use". In the case of these particular images, I sincerely thought I had gotten it right by carefully selecting from the pre-defined menu choices in the licencing box of the upload page, clearly describing the content (i.e., low-resolution screenshots of a film), rational (i.e., intended to support statements made in the sections where they are used), etc. These images were uploaded with absolutely no ill-intent in the hope of improving the visual impact and clarity of the article. Apologies if I got it wrong. I would much like to include these images, so again, any help your able to provide would be appreciated. Cheers, Cl3phact0 (talk) 17:29, 21 December 2022 (UTC)

Wikipedia goes by its own policy of non-free content which is stricter than fair use. The use of any non-free content must meet all of the non-free content criteria. The images are tagged for deletion for not meeting WP:NFCC#8 which covers contextual significance. The policy states Non-free content is used only if its presence would significantly increase readers' understanding of the article topic, and its omission would be detrimental to that understanding. These images are all illustrating minor items in the article and their removal does not detract from a reader's understanding of the topic. Collectively, they also contravene WP:NFCC#3a which covers minimal number of non-free items. Given the usage, I do not believe there is any way for these images to be kept in that article. You may challenge this deletion by making a case on the talk page for each image, however, I do not believe there would be a strong case for keeping the images. Copyright, and non-free content on Wikipedia can be very confusing. Media Copyright Questions is a good venue for asking about copyright issues and non-free content issues related to images. For more general help as a new editor, the Teahouse is a good place to get editing help. -- Whpq (talk) 18:03, 21 December 2022 (UTC)
Ok thanks for the detailed explanation and reference links. I will read the WP:NFCC policy documents you've shared and try to get a better grip on the nuance, however, I don't think I'm up to the task of preparing for a full-scale debate on the matter. It's too bad that there doesn't seem to be more scope to improve these articles visually.
[NB: Please note that I disagree (respectfully) that the images illustrate a minor point. The use of chess in these films is significant in the context of the article every bit as much so as the paintings, illuminated texts, chess sets made by famous artists, poetry, literature, etc. that illustrate similar points.]
The sections in question could benefit from being expanded into prose rather than the current bullet point list (though even if they were rewritten, the article would still be more information-rich and useful with the images)— but that's another discussion . Alas.
Again, thanks for your response. Cheers Cl3phact0 (talk) 21:51, 21 December 2022 (UTC)
PS: Having reviewed the above, I maintain that the images in question "significantly increase readers' understanding of the article topic, and [their] omission would be detrimental to that understanding". Some readers are simply visually minded, while some may be neurodivergent (e.g., ASD, ADHD, ADD, etc.), or dyslexic. There is ample evidence that shows that associating an image with a fact or concept significantly increases retention of information (see Method of loci for one such example), regardless of how one's brain is wired. May I ask you to review the matter again? Thanks
PPS: Also see: https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2016/dec/18/pictures-trigger-memories-faster-than-words-neuroscientist
@Cl3phact0: As I mentioned above, if you want to contest the deletion, you need to make your case on the file's talk page. I still maintain that the images do not meet Wikipedia's non-free content policy. -- Whpq (talk) 19:17, 24 December 2022 (UTC)
The logic seems contrary (and detrimental) to the stated purpose of this project.
Again, thank you for taking the time to point out the relevant policy documentation.

User talk:Entercontainment

Would you mind taking a look at this user's file uploads? A bunch of them I tagged for F7 reasons were just deleted and there are probably more (many more) that have the same problems. I didn't notice it at first, but you seem to have also tagged some of this user's uploads for similar reasons in June 2021 and tried to explain why on the user's talk page. In that discussion, they seem to have understood why the files in question were deleted, but for some reason they've gone back to uploading similar files with similar issues. In their response to the notifications I added and on the now-deleted files' pages, they basically reposted the same list of articles and made the same WP:OTHERIMAGE and WP:ITSFAIRUSE arguments as they did back June 2021 when discussing things with you (this includes the same link to Donna Reed which didn't contain any non-free images then and still doesn't now). It's almost starting to look like a case of WP:IDHT since they appear to have continued to upload the same type of files even after the two you tagged were deleted. They also uploaded anther one earlier today, even after having quite a number tagged for deletion for the same reason by me. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:52, 7 January 2023 (UTC)

Unfortunately, I am going on vacation for a week and won't really have much time or ability to follow up right now. -- Whpq (talk) 00:56, 7 January 2023 (UTC)
That's OK. Enjoy your vacation. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:10, 7 January 2023 (UTC)
I hope you had a nice vacation. Now that you're back, I see that you've been working through the list of OTHERIMAGE examples that this user has been citing as a justification when a file they've uploaded has been tagged for rfu reasons. I too did some assessing and tagged the ones on the list that I felt clearly had F7 issues with rfu. Even though pretty much all of the ones I tagged were eventually deleted, they're still trying to use the same list as justification. Some of the entries on that list were actually to articles where non-free cover art was being used in the main infobox in an acceptable manner and PD images were being used in the body of the article. So, they had no NFCCP issues at all. Others were perhaps borderline cases where the non-free image could be argued to be something being discussed in the article, and thus might need some further discussion to sort out. There's probably still more assessing of this user's uploads that needs to be done in general, but they don't seem to be slowing down. They don't even seem to have noticed or cared that most of the examples they're citing or files they've uploaded that have been tagged for F7 reasons have been deleted. I'm almost certain that File:Zamah Cunningham in The Honeymooners 1956.jpg can also be tagged for F7 reasons, and just as certain that they will probably dispute that by posting the same stuff as they've been doing for the other files. So, not sure what to do. Many of their uploads seem OK, though they probably should be licensed as {{Non-free biog pic}} instead of {{Non-free historic image}}. Many of them might also possibly be {{PD-US-no notice}} or {{PD-US-not renewed}}, but it's a bit hard to keep up with the pace of their uploads. Any ideas on how to proceed here. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:46, 19 January 2023 (UTC); [Note: Post edited by Marchjuly to strike out part of above post. -- 22:11, 19 January 2023 (UTC)]</smal>
I've stricken out the part of my above post about the Cunningham file because it it missed that it's license was non-free. Which of the two non-free images should be being used is probably something that should be sorted out on either the article's talk page or at FFD, but I don't think both are needed. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:11, 19 January 2023 (UTC)

Mr Haney image

Hi Whpq. What do you think about this for Wikipedia:Files for discussion/2023 January 15#File:MrHaney.jpg? File:MrHaney.jpg was another one of the files on that list and this one doesn't appear to have a visible copyright notice on its back. It has a date and a bar code (but I think that was added well after the fact) and also a watermark, but I don't see a copyright notice. There might be a cleaner version of this image floating around somewhere without the watermark, or it could perhaps be uploaded as is to Commons and then tagged with c:Template:Watermark. FWIW, the water doesn't appear to have been added by the original copyright holder, but rather subsequently added by the website selling the photo. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:25, 19 January 2023 (UTC)

Yes, that is a better quality photo. The watermark is obviously added by the eBay seller to prevent people from just downloading and printing a copy for themselves. Go ahead and upload it to Commons. There is enough of the face that is clear of the watermark that this could be cropped and be useful for the article. Thanks for digging around for a better free photo. -- Whpq (talk) 02:57, 19 January 2023 (UTC)
I asked someone about this at Commons at they posted c:Commons:Graphic Lab/Photography workshop#Pat Buttram. Perhaps there'll be a free equivalent soon and this could be added to the FFD about the non-free. -- Marchjuly (talk) 11:49, 21 January 2023 (UTC)

Discussion About Images Nominated for Deletion

Whpq This comment comes regarding my nomination for certain images to be deleted on Wikipedia:Files for discussion/2023 January 12 I saw you posted that the discussion ended in a decision to have the images kept. From what I can tell, only one person argued against my nomination. How does this constitute a consensus decision? Emiya1980 (talk) 23:04, 22 January 2023 (UTC)

FFD is not well-attended so the fact that there were only two participants (nominator, and one other editor) is not unusual. The decision to keep was based on strength of arguments with respect to Wikipedia policy. Although the images were all copyrighted, these were all acknowledged to be copyrighted by the license tag, and were being used based on our non-free content criteria which is what the editor advocating for keep pointed out. There was no argument that these images failed our non-free content policy in any way. The deletion argument that the originating website doesn't allow us to use it is incorrect in that these images qualify under fair use under US law and and as such, we (or anybody else) using images under fair use do not need the permission of the copyright holder. Our non-free content policy is actually stricter than fair use, but relies upon it. You were the original uploader, and uploaded them as non-free content so presumably you were aware of the policy. If you believe the deletion discussion was closed incorrectly due to an error in process or application of policy, you can request a review of this at WP:DRV. -- Whpq (talk) 23:56, 22 January 2023 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Draft:Fisher Ocean

I have left a comment at your MfD nomination because it appears you made it on the basis that the draft was a copy of Fisker Ocean, whereas I believe Fisker Ocean is in fact a copy of the draft, and that the draft is a copy of Fisker Inc.#Fisker Ocean - that is, the draft was apparently used as a staging post, which is why I nominated it for speedy housekeeping deletion.

The editor who did this has not provided any attribution, nor have they done anything with the original content which is now duplicated. I have tried advising them of this (User talk:MrDavr#Copying within Wikipedia requires attribution (3rd request)) but I'd appreciate your guidance and opinion, because little progress has been made. Hi Whpq. Unsure sure if this was a mistake, but generally it's not advisable to !vote in a discussion and then close it. To be clear, I'm not contesting the result of the closure, but I do believe it would be more appropriate for an uninvolved editor to make that call. Regards, FASTILY 06:21, 18 February 2023 (UTC)

Oops. That was a mistake. I missed that I had participated. Perhaps for full neutrality you can reclose it. -- Whpq (talk) 12:35, 18 February 2023 (UTC)
No worries, and sure I can do that. Best, FASTILY 10:21, 19 February 2023 (UTC)

restore RWBY x Justice League

i know why you deleted that page but i think i can recreate a newer version PoundPuppy44 (talk) 01:23, 21 February 2023 (UTC)

I assume you mean Justice League x RWBY: Super Heroes & Huntsmen. It's was deleted as a copyright violation. You are free to create the article so long as you don't copy the text from a copyrighted source. -- Whpq (talk) 01:47, 21 February 2023 (UTC)

Tomoro Ouchida

I'm a little confused. I have created an article (arts, biography) on a deceased shodo master (Japanese calligraphy artist). Everything in the article is cited and has photographic and historic information about this artist. However, I have quite a few questions how to make the article better, and also if anything needs to be modified to make the article qualify to be published on Wikipedia.

Apparently you, or perhaps another editor has deleted the work I prepared for this article which took over 2 weeks of hard work. Now it appears to be totally gone. Do I have to start all over again?

I don't get it. I'm speechless.

If it doesn't pass the copyright issues, at least who do you delete all of my work without giving me the chance to correct it?

100's of hours of work gone. I'm burnt.

Tomoro Ouchida

Hundreds of hours of work on this page are deleted.

I don't get it. If there's an issue, copyright or otherwise, let me at least correct it. Do I have to start all over from scratch???

I'm speechless. This is insane.

Tomoro Ouchida

Hello -

I spent a couple hundred hours creating the Tomoro Ouchida page. I wrote 100% of everything. None was a breach of copyright. I own 100% of the rights to write the contents of the page that you deleted. Now I have to start all over, even the original is gone.

It is very difficult to navigate the Wiki website, and I understand almost nothing. However the word and images and the facts of the article were all correct. The photographs used, I took and I own the license to any that might be even in question.

Do I now have to start all over from scratch?

I'm speechless that that work was just deleted without any chance to even correct anything that was not Wiki standard. Really frustrating.

The article was deleted because it was a copy from a website that is copyrighted. If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Please see Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If a free license is verified, the material can be restored without you having to enter it all again. -- Whpq (talk) 12:07, 21 February 2023 (UTC)

Deletion of Page Professor Davey Jones

Hello

I understood that the page was deleted cited copywrite infringement. The picture was given by Davey Jones to be used freely on websites, social media etc. Please REINSTATE THE PAGE. Thank you. Afs080 (talk) 12:02, 22 February 2023 (UTC)

The file was deleted on Commons so you will need to calldeal with it there. -- Whpq (talk) 12:40, 22 February 2023 (UTC)

Image question

Hello, Whpq,

I've noticed you've done work with file images so I have a question for you. On the latest Broken Redirect list, a lot of files showed up. I don't know whether they need to be "fixed" (and if so, how?) or simply deleted as we do with most broken redirects. Can you take a look at these files? Thanks! Liz Read! Talk! 07:25, 26 February 2023 (UTC)

Hi Liz. Those redirects are all to files that were deleted via F8 as they had been copied to Commons. I know this because I did the F8 deletion. I don't know what fix would be applied to these. I tried this but that didn't work. I'm not that familiar with redirects, file or otherwise. These redirects are not used as far as I can tell. I suppose the main concern would be attribution if an external site copied the file and provided the source link as the name used in the file redirect. In such a case we would need to maintain the redirect for attribution. But I don't think that applies here. File:AACCLOGO.gif is pointing to a public domain file, and so there is no requirement to provide attribution for its use by somebody reusing the file. The Gwen Stefani files are all convenience redirects created by AnomieBOT very shortly after the upload because en-dashes are hard to type. Looking at the all-time page view stats for the redirects, most are four or under with one exception which has 14. I rather suspect that there is no need for keeping these for attribution as somebody reusing the image would likely have copied it from the direct file name rather than a redirect. -- Whpq (talk) 14:29, 26 February 2023 (UTC)
