Speedy deletion nomination of Philadelphia Canoe Club

Some problems with what you are doing

You're still pretty new here, so I need to tell you about a couple of things you are doing wrong:

• Do not remove warning tags that another editor has placed on a story until you have addressed the problems that those warnings concern. For instance, you keep removing tags in the William George Wilson article. These warning are there because 1) you have given us no references to prove that others recognize what this person has done; 2) we cannot verify the truth or accuracy of what you have written because you have given us no references, and 3) you have not dealt with the "peacock phrases" that you have used to describe Wilson, such as "set early standards for broadcasting excellence". Those phrases tend to imply a point of view that is not neutral, which is required for Wikipedia articles.
• In the article for deletion discussion for your Philadelphia Canoe Club article, you posted some material on the talk page of that discussion that should properly go into the discussion itself. You are supposed to be making an argument for why the article should stay, and that is the proper place to do so. Moreover, if you can give us references to back your claim that it is the second- or third-oldest club of its kind in the nation, and/or that it has produced several Olympians (who? when? how did they do?), there's a good chance that the club would then be considered notable and the article would be saved.

Your overall writing style is very good, quite good for someone who is fairly new here. I think if you take heed to my advice above, you'll do just fine here and become a very productive Wikipedian and we need those around here. Above all, do not hesitate to ask any questions of myself or any of the other admins and experienced editors here about any Wikipedia issue. - Realkyhick (Talk to me) 03:46, 1 January 2010 (UTC)

Callous or not, it is a requirement that there be some sort of references given so that we can verify what someone writes in an article. Otherwise, for all we know you're creating this person out of thin air. Your word or my word on someone's notability or accomplishments simply isn't good enough. It's pretty much the same standards as used in academia. Consider this: You're in a college class, and you submit a research paper about something — anything — without footnotes/endnotes. The professor would probably give you an "F" on the spot, and probably a good dressing-down. Well,pretty much the same thing applies here. Note that references do not necessarily have to be available online — many references here are from good ol' fashioned books and magazines. But you have to have them. Period. It's a rule here. Otherwise, this article will be deleted. If this Wilson guy is as good as you say he is, someone somewhere has written something about him. Yeah, I sometimes hate editors too, even though I am one (sports) by profession.

You're doing fine on the responses and so forth. Don't sweat it. Now, you may notice that I found a link to the Delaware County Daily Times obit. That verifies quite a bit of what you have written, and it certainly qualifies as a reliable source. The Inquirer obit is also online, though you have to register to get to it. I found both with Google, thanks to your titles and sources. One more word of caution: Since Mr. Wilson is your dad, there may be problems with our conflict of interest guidelines, so take care to stay neutral and all that. It helps when you're dealing with someone who is obviously trying to do good work, as opposed to those who simply vandalize (kids in study hall or just home from the school day) or those seeking to promote a business, political cause, and so forth. ArbCom elections are now open!

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment.
