Some advice?

Hello, it's me again :) I'm sorry to bother you but I'm wondering if you maybe could help me with something, in case you know. I've got my hands on a few more books about churches on Gotland and thought I'd make a complementary list to the List of churches on Gotland with one called List of church ruins on Gotland or something - I'm starting over at my sandbox. Now most of the ruined churches are in Visby, and named after saints; however, the saint names are rendered in Swedish (naturally) in the Swedish literature. I'm not sure if I should just leave it like that, or supply also an English translation, or just go with the English version. Trouble is, sometimes it's not entirely clear to me what saint is represented. For example, which Karin is S:ta Karin, and so on. I feel the natural thing would be to only give the Swedish name and avoid ugly, home-made translations and misrepresentations, but on the other hand it would look strange to only have the Swedish name without any explanation or translation... so my question is really: do you by any chance happen to know if there is any generally accepted name for these churches, in English? And if not, what do you think would be the best way to approach the problem?

In case you have any direct thoughts, I mean - I don't want to occupy your time unnecessarily with these details, and understand perfectly if you don't have time!

@Yakikaki: Hello again! A quick search confirmed what I already thought: There are no exact or officially accepted English names for the ruins. Most of the time the English name is made just by translating the "Sankt" into Saint, like "Sankt Clemens" becomes Saint Clemens. The reasons for this are many. In most cases it's just because there has been no need for a translation, in other cases the name does not refer to an actual saint but is just a name that have been given to the church by the locals and since all the other have the "Sankt" in front, this was just used anyway. In some cases nobody knows who the original saint was. So it's a mess.

This page at least tries to explain where the names comes from. It's the best list I've found. Then there is the website on all things Gotland, it's like the Google of Gotland. You can search for any name in the search box (upper right corner) and the site will give you a very talkative and lengthy explanation of any ruin or whatever. Be sure to have your Google translator on. It is a very trustworthy site since many of the people writing on it work at museums or are involved in some kind of heritage society, things taken very seriously here.:) On this page you can see all of the ruins. (Ooops! Sorry, you have to enter the word "ruin" in the search box in order to see the list.) Just click on the one you want more info about.

My advice it that you should use the Swedish names in titles for articles and such, since this is the way they are mentioned in all tourist stuff and such. The only name usually translated is Domkyrkan Sankta Maria, The Saint Mary's Cathedral. And if you can find a close enough name for an appropriate saint, you can write it in brackets with an explanation after. Example: Sankt Clemens ("The Saint Clemens Church", probably named from Clemens Romanus). But in order to find this info I had to find somewhere where S:t Clemens was mentioned together with sjöfararnas skyddshelon ("patron saint of seafarers") as mentioned in the info about the church at one of the websites above. Luckily I found this page and could move on to The Wikipedia. So a lot of detective work if one want's to do it right.

The reason for all this confusion is that Visby in those days was not a part of Sweden, but was run by the Hanseatic League, much like later Hong Kong, Singapore or Yokohama. The rich Germans built all these churches and when they left, the ignorant Gotlandic peasants had no idea about all these fancy saints and stuff so things were forgotten. I expect you know that the Wall around Visby was built to protect the nice city of Visby from the "barbaric" Gotlanders?

Since it is rather hard to search for things the way I did with S:t Clemens if you don't speak Swedish that well, I can help you if you like. Thank you VERY much for your unusually kind help! It seems it's even messier than I thought ;) And also quite interesting, I knew that Visby had been a Hanseatic town but I had no idea it was so divided between the peasants and the Germans that even the names of the churches were distorted. Sounds much like the history of Tallinn, in fact! Ah, history is always fascinating and complex :P

But yes, the best idea is probably as you propose to write the name in Swedish and try to fit in an explanation where appropriate. The links you provided seem very handy for this purpose. I have a reasonably good command of Swedish, so I think I should manage, but I'll let you know if I run in to any weird problems again, ahead :)

Hello my friend and welcome back. :) The "Life and career" section looks great to me. It was a very nice read. Some die-hard-editor might consider the quotes from the newspapers a bit promotional, but that's their problem. I think you satisfied the curiosity of the readers. There are a couple of things I might make suggestions about. First of: Sections appearing in the "Contents box" should normally not be linked. They should all be "black". See this Wiki MOS Section If you want a link to explain, just write a simple sentence below including the thing you want linked and perhaps some explanation about the award. Something like this:

I looked at some other writers biographies, and they normally do not have the ISBN-number included in the article, (has not: David Baldacci, Stieg Larsson, James Patterson bibliography has it:John le Carré ). I think it's excellent to have them since they are really helpful, but the blue "shines so brightly" that it distracts from the titles. You could try to put them in small text like this, just a suggestion. :)

Another thing, he has given so many excellent interviews on the Internet. You might try to put two of the best, and most neutral (not promoting a book or something), in the "External links". Since these links are not used for references, criteria are a bit more lenient so even primary sources can be present in that section. I think that readers would like to read something in his own words. If the reviewer don't like the links, s(he) can always prune them. All in all: good job! Fingers crossed. Hi, w.carter! Thanks, I worked on the awards late last night. I list ISBN numbers and publishers to make it easier for the books to be found. I know a lot of authors' articles don't have them, but it may be because it's a lot of work to look them up (I've added, or finished adding, them to several author pages). The ISBN link format is "hard-wired" into the way they are created (WP:ISBN and magic links). When I first started using them, I tried a few modifications and discovered my changes wouldn't render the links, so I decided at that point to leave them look the way WP creates them. More Gotland-related things

Hi W.carter, I hope you're doing fine! Thanks for your help earlier, I've now managed to jot down a List of church ruins on Gotland. If I can, I'll try to make it good enough to propose it as a featured list eventually... But right now I was just thinking, do you think it would somehow fit into the Template:Gotland County somewhere? Or maybe somewhere else? Hello again Yakikaki, so nice to hear from you again. Thank you for making that list. :) It may not fit into the Gotland County, since this is all about geographical and administrative things, but it makes a very nice addition to various places mentioned in the list. I started with placing links at some of the most obvious articles, and I will keep both you lists in mind when I edit other Gotlandic articles. I have put links in the "See also" section of several articles already. If you have your "link-notice" activated you should have been pinged several times by now. :) (Otherwise see Gotland Visby Roma, Gotland etc. Last week I was out taking pictures of "boring and un-photographed" places in Visby. You can see the pictures here. If you have some request for photos about any place on Gotland, please let me know. No trouble at all! You are very welcome with requests. Photographing is a very good way to get some exercise and I normally don't have that much of a clue of where to go, so guiding suggestions are always nice. They will your favor to me. :) Anyway, the whole thing is for The Wiki and "my" island, right? And I have already been approached by other Wikipedians about documenting the island a bit more photowise, since there are not many people doing that. The Langska huset is a lovely place. OK, well, here goes then :) There are a few churches that still are unrepresented on commons or with only old b/w pictures or pictures of details, and these are Atlingbo, Björke, Ganthem, Gerum, Guldrupe, Hejde, Näs, Silte Träkumla and Väte. Also Bara ödekyrka lacks a photo (but I don't know how much there is left to photograph...) So quite a few, it turns out. I'm grateful for any picture of any of them, and I'll answer up each one you can get with an article on it - for The Wiki and your island, as you rightly said! @Yakikaki: Hello! I had a wonderful day yesterday. :) I packed a picnic basket and went on a tour to the five churches closest to home. The weather changed all the time, so the light wasn't always perfect, but I did the best I could. I have also bought a new camera (my old one was just a toy), so not quite used to it yet. I don't know if it's my computer screen or the camera, but some pictures might have turned out a bit too light. Could you check on your screen and see if they are ok, especially the ones from Bara ödekyrka. If you want some of them darker, just let me know and I'll just make other versions. I might have gone a bit over the top there... but the place was absolutely enchanting, so lots of pictures. :) Thank you for suggesting it, I had not been there before and it was a bit hard to find. It was a place where time seemed to stop. The church is situated right below a pagan sacrificial hill and the ravens were out in force while I was there. I can understand why some of the other churches have not been photographed before. Most of them are hidden in groves of large trees, very pleasant but hard to photograph. Hope you like them anyway. The pictures can be found here or here. I have just finished uploading them and it usually takes a day or so before they are visible in their category, or in the Uploads for someone else than me, but I think you can look at them from the Contrib. page. Or wait until tomorrow. :) Looking forward to the rest of the "assignment/vacation". And please don't forget to let me know about the brightness so I can adjust the camera if necessary. Hello my friend! What a nice picnic you had! I'm quite envious, I have to admit. :) All these places are very nice, and your description of the moment at the church ruin sounds magical - ravens and all! I'm glad I could suggest it. :) The churches are also very fine, for a church-nerd like me they are gold. All the churches on Gotland have a certain mix of elegance and vernacular style that is very charming, I think. So thank you for these beautiful things!

Hm, about the light... No, I am looking at them now and I must say they look very fine, in my eyes. The only thing I noticed is that in a few of the pictures the contrast between light and dark is a bit sharp, but I think I noticed it just because you asked me to look for a flaw... Overall, I think the quality is very good!

@Yakikaki: Thank you for your comments on the pictures. When you mention it I think that the high contrast might be why I think they are too bright. I'll adjust the camera and do some testing. A country for old men?

The pic on your userpage seems to show only old people, by one definition or another. Given that you already specified one way the pic could be improved - if describing what Wikipedia should look like - is this intentional? --Demiurge1000 (talk) 00:02, 1 August 2014 (UTC)

@Demiurge1000: Hello again! I'm sorry if the picture accidentally offended you, it was never my intention to just show old people. :) I was looking in the Commons for a picture showing lots of activity, with people dashing around, exchanging information, cooperating and contributing to build something larger. I thought that the busy floor of a stock exchange could be a picture that illustrated such a place. I was really looking for something more updated with young frantic traders, preferably of all ages and genders but I could not find such a picture and had to settle for this. (I think there was some more modern pic, but it did not show any activity, and motion was what I was looking for.) If you know of a better, more diversified and contemporary picture please let me know, I would rather have such a picture here on my page, but the Commons is sometimes a bit limited in choices, which is one of the reasons why I have taken up my camera to add to it (eg. look at my pics from the Almedalen Week). But unfortunately I do not live near a stock exchange.

On another note, please let me tell you that one of the reasons I choose to edit on the English Wikipedia instead of on the Swedish, is that the Swedish is too "heavy" in the old and male section. I think that a Wikipedia with a wide variety of contributors is a better one. Also, I recently found out that the pic is also used in the "deadline" template (see the top of this page). Maybe you should talk to some admin about a more proper pic there too, since it also represents the Wikipedia? Best, w.carter-Talk 08:59, 1 August 2014 (UTC)

Now that you've entered the wonderful world of scripts, here is another one you might find useful:

Thank You Master, (soon to become Jedi Master of the High Council), The Force is with me! All of the sudden The Wikipedia had been taken over by ILM. It will take some practicing (I'll be careful how I wield it during the first days) and figuring out what the colors mean, but it really is "an elegant weapon for a more civilized age". Glad it's useful. You can also tweak your custom CSS in preferences (and I'm assuming from the self-declared "Nerd" status on your user page that you know what I mean) for a more personalised display. I have mine set to display to Chinese characters in a larger font because it make it easier to see the difference between traditional and simplified characters. Hello Alrich44. Thank you for being so civilized and revert your edits yourself. Life as a newbie here is not easy, I know that from experience. I will address all the things I object to at the talk page of John Bauer as soon as I can, so that other editors can see them as well. This article is about to be nominated for GA (Good Article). Such an article must have a very certain form to pass that inspection, something I have been working on for some months now. Your edits unfortunately disrupted this form. But you had no way of knowing this. Another thing is that an article may not be involved in an edit war if it is to pass the GA review, so I really hope that all this can be settled in an orderly fashion for the sake of the article. You are a good writer, I will not deny that, but things are different when writing an encyclopedia from writing a book. I will move on to the talk page of JB now. Hi Alrich44, this a perfectly acceptable level of CE. One caveat though: The article is at the top of the "CE list" now and another editor may come to do a Guild sanctioned ce at any moment now. Two copy editors working at the same time on one article is never a good thing. Articles listed near the top of the list is better to leave alone. Also, if you alter things like "history painter" be sure that the new resulting sentence cannot be misunderstood in any way. I saw that you caught one more mistake, about Agneta but the new text is not correct either. Hello again Alrich44, thank you for your notes on JB's talk page. That's the way to do it so that the people making the CE and the GA review can take note. And thank you for not risking an editing conflict at the article. Just let it rest for now. Since you are an accomplished writer, your biggest challenge here will be to realize that this is an encyclopedia and not a book or short story. It has to remain absolutely neutral and only state what is in sources. It will be boring, with no catchy lines, cumbersome links instead of colorful explaining, void of personal preferences (personal opinions should be left at the door), and so on, but such is the nature of a good encyclopedia. A good thing for you would be to read articles listed as Featured articles (FA) and Good Articles (GA) to see how a "perfect" article can be written. You might also ask for a mentor at the Teahouse, someone to bug more informally with questions. Even though most articles are free for anyone to edit, you might want to do some checking before doing major alterations like the one you started at JB. All articles are being watched by a number of watchers and not all of them have the same Zen-like approach I have, to having "their" articles re-written like that. Some would call it borderline vandalism and not good faith. You might want to watch and learn a bit more before trying to be too helpful. I may sound coldhearted, but it really is the best thing around here. (And, yes, I know there are a lot of "might" in the text, but such is the cautions language here. ) Best, w.carter-Talk 14:04, 16 August 2014 (UTC)

I found a better template for rolling things up {{collapse top}} followed by {{collapse bottom}}. {{hat}} is more for discussions plus the collapse box is green, which is a nicer color than the hat one, particularly for Swedes because they are close to nature apparently :) BTW, did you see the link Jim Cartar posted for the ref thing on my talk today? As you're a nerd (no offence meant), I assume you know how to fix that with Photoshop. If not, let me know which ones and I'll do it for you. @Philg88:No problem, I take Nerd as a compliment. I do speak Photoshop fluently, but with these new cameras it's easier to adjust the hardware for more perfect pics instead of having to process every one of them. These last ones were totally ok. As long as Yaki is happy, then I'm ok with them too. I can always go back and tweak them in Commons, like I did with this today. Don't worry, you gave a quite adequate answer. :) You must have better things to do than helping me out every time I get into trouble! It was built by a man called Claes Grill who was also a member of the Swedish East India Company, and while looking at the SOIC article I was thinking "what a great article, I wonder who edited it!" and it turns out it was you! @Yakikaki:So, once again we think alike. I have just finished reading about 2.000 pages about Swedish East India Company since I am going to expand that article significally and write articles that are linked to it. There are just so many interesting things about it. In doing so I have come across some really nice stuff that I have or am putting in articles. So far this has resulted in an expansion of Götheborg (ship), new article about a Chinese merchant Puankhequa and I am working on a draft about Mr Puankhequa's trading partners in Sweden the Draft:Grill (family) where Svindersvik is mentioned. You might find some good sources for your article about the place there. If you write your article I will link to it in the same way as I did with Arvfurstens palats (The Lennart Torstensons palace). :) You can see why the article is taking so long to write. It is almost impossible to sort out who is who in the sources since they all have the same name!! You might find some other nice houses there as well. @Yakikaki:As for the scripts, they are not as dangerous as they sound. :) At least not the one I was thinking about for you. It is simply a code that is put on a subpage, much like a "sandbox2". Mine are located here User:W.carter/common.js. Two of these codes makes all links shine in different colors depending on what kind of link it is. If you look at the screenshot of Barlingbo Church here, you can see what it looks like with the script installed. All normal links are blue, "Diocese of Visby" is purple since it is a stub and all the green ones are links to redirected pages (they will turn blue if the link is corrected). There are many more colors, you can see them at the end of this page. It works on most web browsers. If you want this tool I can certainly install it for you, but no preassure, just wanted to let you know what it was. :) Best, w.carter-Talk 12:40, 24 August 2014 (UTC)

@W.carter: Here's a nifty trick: add "mw.util.addPortletLink ('p-tb', wgServer+wgArticlePath.replace("$1", "Special:PrefixIndex/"+wgPageName+"/"), 'Subpages');" to your common.js (without the quotes :)). Once the cache is purged it will display an extra link in the left hand toolbar titled "Subpages". I'm deeply and truly impressed by the work. Here you go: Svindersvik :) It was a nice piece to add to the Grill puzzle. With your knowledge of them and the SOIC, I'm sure you'll find some things for improvement :) I have a few more details to squeeze in somewhere, as well, e.g. the fact that Claes Grill used the SOIC flag, split in two like an ensign, instead of the regular Swedish flag, at Svindersvik, and that this flag still exists in a museum of Sweden and is one of the oldest preserved Swedish flags... @Yakikaki:Before you write this, please read the whole text, even the Note that says: "The swallow-tailed version of the Swedish flag was only used on the ships of the SOIC. The flag depicted in the painting if probably just an artistic way of referencing the estate's connection to the company." Remember that this draft is not ready yet and contains many facts that should be clarified first! :) You can read more about the flag at the Götheborg (ship)#Flag. Haha, for sure! But maybe it's me who am too tired tonight! It seems I haven't been reading anything quite properly. Perhaps, after all, my source can help you sort out the flag question. Here's the full quote in Swedish from "Slott och herresäten" (page 170-71): "Invid denna står en flaggstång med en tvåtungad svensk flagg och en likadan svajar i aktern på en vid bryggan förtöjd jakt: [this in reference to the painting of Svindersvik] direktörer i Ostindiska kompaniet (Claes Grill var en sådan) förde gärna i stolt merkantil självhävdelse den tvåtungade flaggen i trots av gällande flaggförordning. (På Svindersvik har bevarats en tvåtungad kompaniflagga för en ostinidiefarare - en av de äldsta bevarade svenska flaggorna - nu överlämnad till Livrustkammaren.)" I don't know if this clarifies anything or is just contrary to other sources, but you have a broader picture and may find it useful. @Yakikaki:Well, I think your source may be right after all. From what I have learned Claes & Co tried to get the two tounged flag approved for the ships, but the request was denied. Claes didn't give a s**t about this and ordered his flags in Canton. One of them is kept at Svindersvik. The flags were then used on the ships at sea. These guys did pretty much as they pleased, and who could stop them at sea outside the coast of Africa?? Knowing Claes Grill the way I do now, he probably used the flag at Svindersvik despite being forbidden to do so by the king. I just had not found any source to support it, so thank you. Now I have. :) I mean, speeding and street racing are forbidden today, yet people do it just the same. Maybe this "criminal activity" will make an even better DYK! :) But somewhere along the line the flag must have been sanctioned and allowed, since I found a document from the Swedish Riksdag were the flag is mentioned as allowed. I've started "tweaking"... well "total reconstruction" might be more appropriate of Einar. OMFG!!! Pardon my language, please. It was the first thing I did here and it certainly shows. I was so proud of it then, but looking at it now, what a disaster in style, choice of words, sections, etc. I'm so very thankful that you gave me the knowledge to fix it properly. I was just translating the article from the SweWiki, so not really writing it myself, and the original language was antiquated and full of useless things. I didn't know and I did not find a guideline about this: so I asked the Chat Room - they said major contributors, and the person from the Copy Editor Guild would "generally know if they want the tag on there talk or not" - I think they meant user page.
