Retro video games

Hi there! If you want more articles to work on like you did with TigerShark, I have started many stub articles in similar condition as how you found it! If you would like recommendations I would be happy to give you some. Any particular publishing era or genre, or...? BOZ (talk) 11:21, 15 August 2022 (UTC)

Hello! It's nice to see a fellow user on here! Basically my current approach is accessing the Internet Archive and National Library of Australia to access lost and unrecorded reviews of the Australian publication PC PowerPlay, and archiving the reviews and scores chronologically through the issues from its first available issues in 1996. That said, I'm always happy to help out in other ways too, and have found I've fleshed out a few pages using many other sources online. If you have started working on stubs particularly from PC games in the mid to late 90s, I'll most certainly be able to cross-reference and flesh them out with the magazines I'm working with. If there's anything else I can do to help, let me know too! Thanks :) Vrxces (talk) 11:45, 15 August 2022 (UTC)
OK sounds good, I will get you a short list of those in the most need of improvement, and you can pick and choose which ones you want to work on.  :) BOZ (talk) 14:20, 15 August 2022 (UTC)
I started the majority of my video game work on Next Generation magazine, adding articles for games that were missing (which is how you found TigerShark and apparently also NBA Full Court Press last month), and adding reviews to articles which already existed. the first 12 issues were published in 1995, so I'm not sure if that is too early for you. For the first issue for example, I created John Madden Football (1994 video game), PaTaank, PGA Tour Golf 486, Battlecorps, and The Masked Rider: Kamen Rider ZO. Or should I jump ahead a bit and see what else there is? I started even more than that for the second issue, and you can see that of those Burning Soldier and Doctor Hauzer have both been built up very nicely already.  :) BOZ (talk) 15:26, 15 August 2022 (UTC)

Hello Vrxces. I notice in the PC PowerPlay See Also section, that there was a sister magazine Hyper (magazine). This may be of interest to you. All the best, MrsSnoozyTurtle 08:35, 29 August 2022 (UTC)

Hello! Thank you! I'm encountering a lot of Hyper reviews when I am creating articles or furnishing out review sections. Whilst my method doesn't really lend itself to trawling through the physical copies like I'm doing at the library with PC Powerplay, I am relying a lot on the Internet Archive to find other sources, and Hyper reviews turn up in a lot of what I'm doing. If there's anything I can do to help with your online projects, let me know! Vrxces (talk) 08:21, 11 September 2022 (UTC)

Doubts on Good Article readiness of Art Data Interactive

I noticed that you nominated this article for GA status. However, it seems like it is mostly about the projects the company worked on, not the actual company. Notability is not inherited, so putting a bunch of games together does not mean the creators of said games is notable. I would consider a WP:SPLIT to Doom (1995 video game) for most of the information stated here or moving it back to List of Doom ports. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 12:39, 16 September 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for your response and recommendations on the article. I'm a fairly new user so it's difficult to tell the distinction between a B and GA and notability rules, and appreciate your help in getting a feel for it. Vrxces (talk) 04:55, 17 September 2022 (UTC)

I nominated an article that you started for Did you know - Template:Did you know nominations/Rhino Rumble. SL93 (talk) 23:16, 2 November 2022 (UTC)

Thank you - that's very nice of you! I'm glad a few people have come across my recent efforts to fill the gaps of GBC games without articles. Vrxces (talk) 23:26, 2 November 2022 (UTC)

Moirai

Hey I saw you made an article for Moirai. Congrats. I wanted to make that years ago. If you're interested you could try to contact the creator for images to use for free. I asked him and got permission but somehow it fell through on Commons. He could possibly say yes again. GamerPro64 05:05, 5 November 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads-up! He's quite accessible and a nice fellow who is aware of the page, so will put this on my to-do list. And thank you - I remember playing the game many years ago and was surprised no article existed - for an experimental indie game it got quite a lot of press. DYK for Rhino Rumble

On 17 November 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Rhino Rumble, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that a version of the video game Rhino Rumble was not released due to the creators not wanting to add licensed characters? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Rhino Rumble. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Rhino Rumble), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Small word on style

Hi Vrxces, I noticed your contributions to video game articles. Thank you for your edits. I see you're a fairly new (registered) editor and there are some minor errors you've made. I just went over Pocket Music. Let's take a look at the diff:

  • Genres, musical genres or video game genres, aren't written in capital letters
  • There's WP:OVERLINKing, if for instance Game Boy Color is linked in a paragraph, the next time it's mentioned you don't have to link to it. The overlinking comes back in the reception section
  • Titles, like video games, TV series or albums are written in italics, while songs and episodes are written with apostrophes
  • It's odd to write "of note"; if it wasn't notable we wouldn't include it in an article, right? It comes off as WP:EDITORIAL
  • I moved the bit in the 'legacy' section to development. Legacy is tricky, but mostly I just ask myself "what effect had this game on gaming in general?" So if another video game developer mentions it as inspiration or a RS considers it to be influential, that's legacy. That source code was leaked online isn't legacy in my eyes
  • We link to articles when it's necessary to do so, based upon the subject matter. In video game articles, we link to video game terms; for articles on linguistics, it makes sense to link to the word "the" for instance. To link to North America as a release region is unnecessary: we can assume the average reader generally knows what that is

Minor errors, nothing to worry about. Hope this help you in future editing. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Thanks, and happy editing. soetermans. ↑↑↓↓←→←→ B A TALK 10:20, 30 November 2022 (UTC)

Hello! Thank you for your very thoughtful advice as a result of copyediting the page Pocket Music - I really appreciate the time you've spent providing guidance!
I agree with your advice - the key take-away for me is definitely that there are more conventional approaches to linking to other articles when drafting. That's a great reminder.
This page looks like it had a few revisions after creation, so some suggestions and the "of note" phrasing seems to have come out of nowhere. What a strange addition!
Thanks again - if you have any video game projects you're looking for assistance with - let me know! Vrxces (talk) 03:36, 1 December 2022 (UTC)
Hi Vrxces, you're very welcome and thank you for you work. Also my apologies, I should've checked to see if there were others who have edited it as well. I'm not contributing greatly as of late, mostly I'm just copyediting articles I come across. Thanks, and happy editing! soetermans. ↑↑↓↓←→←→ B A TALK 21:12, 3 December 2022 (UTC)

Autopatrolled granted

Hi Vrxces, I just wanted to let you know that I have added the autopatrolled user right to your account. This means that pages you create will automatically be marked as 'reviewed', and no longer appear in the new pages feed. Autopatrolled is assigned to prolific creators of articles, where those articles do not require further review, and may have been requested on your behalf by someone else. It doesn't affect how you edit; it is used only to manage the workload of new page patrollers.

Since the articles you create will no longer be systematically reviewed by other editors, it is important that you maintain the high standard you have achieved so far in all your future creations. Please also try to remember to add relevant WikiProject templates, stub tags, categories, and incoming links to them, if you aren't already in the habit; user scripts such as Rater and StubSorter can help with this. As you have already shown that you have a strong grasp of Wikipedia's core content policies, you might also consider volunteering to become a new page patroller yourself, helping to uphold the project's standards and encourage other good faith article writers.

Feel free to leave me a message if you have any questions. Happy editing! TheSandDoctor Talk 18:27, 1 December 2022 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Proposed deletion of List of Haunted PS1 games

The article List of Haunted PS1 games has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Not a notable subject

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Mario Party DS

Hello. I was looking over your feedback and I noticed that one of your sentences (the last one in the gameplay section) appears to have been cut off. I'm pretty sure I know what you were referring to, but I just wanted to make sure. Thanks! ★ The Green Star Collector ★ (talk) 14:11, 12 July 2023 (UTC)

Thanks for working to improve the Mario Party DS article. Sorry about that! My point was just that other articles seem to remain high-level in the descriptions of minigames and avoid specific references, and it may be better to stick to the types of controls and gameplay used across minigames rather than in any specific one. Vrxces (talk) 00:06, 13 July 2023 (UTC)
I was considering resubmitting Mario Party DS for a good article nomination, but I figured it would make more sense if you looked it over again before an official submission. Would you mind doing so? ★ The Green Star Collector ★ (talk) 02:06, 22 July 2023 (UTC)
Thanks - it looks like you've done a lot to the article since the review. The structured review section particularly stands out, as does the slightly more concise gameplay section. One minor aspect of feedback is that the Rare Oddities YouTube source is not likely to be viewed as a reliable source - I would look for review descriptions, a game manual or official website to find more reliable sources for description of the game. All the best for the renomination - it's probably a good idea to have a separate reviewer this time to get a second opinion on the article! VRXCES (talk) 06:31, 23 July 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for your help! I found an online manual from Nintendo of Europe and added a few more citations to the gameplay section. ★ The Green Star Collector ★ (talk) 15:24, 23 July 2023 (UTC)

It is best to specify the exact source (such as the web page, or printed document) where you found the image, rather than only giving the source domain, search engine, pinboard, aggregator, or the direct/bare URL of the image file itself. Please update the image description with a URL that will be more helpful to other users in determining the copyright status.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source in a complete manner. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. If you have any questions please ask them at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you. — Ирука13 01:49, 3 August 2023 (UTC)

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Rinse and Repeat Gameplay.jpg

Thank you for uploading File:Rinse and Repeat Gameplay.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator seven days after the file was tagged in accordance with section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. — Ирука13 11:50, 29 August 2023 (UTC)

Hi, i appreciate that you need a citation for the claim regarding Steam, but such a thing is simply not citable in a way that complies with the rules, yet it is something that needs to be mentioned because it is a known fact that there are many users who have used the steam version, found problems, bought it again from GoG and had no such issues, despite the builds being the same. It is something I have personally seen for years, thanks to GamerZakhs’ community where this is mentioned over and over. The citation i provided is not to user reviews, but to discussion posts on the forum of the game. The game is also super old and doesn’t get any official support, so expecting an official source is a bit pointless: some common sense could be applied here imo. :) — CitroenLover (talk) 22:30, 11 September 2023 (UTC)

Thanks for flagging. Would you mind if I sought a second view from WP:VG on best practice in these cases? I have my own opposing views, but maybe it would be best to see what others think. VRXCES (talk) 22:52, 11 September 2023 (UTC)

September 2023

Hello, Vrxces. I noticed that your recent edit to Backfirewall added a link to an image on an external website or on your computer, or to a file name that does not exist on Wikipedia's server. For technical and policy reasons it is not possible to use images from external sources on Wikipedia. Most images you find on the internet are copyrighted and cannot be used on Wikipedia, or their use is subject to certain restrictions. If the image meets Wikipedia's image use policy, consider uploading it to Wikipedia yourself or request that someone else upload it. See the image tutorial to learn about wiki syntax used for images. Thank you. - Sumanuil. (talk to me) 05:40, 28 September 2023 (UTC)

It's a coincidence that you happened to be checking for unreferenced image files when I was creating the article and setting up the template. The article now has an image. Thanks! VRXCES (talk) 05:44, 28 September 2023 (UTC)

Pokémon Crystal

I went ahead and did some tidying on it, and removed the Vietnamese version section (it feels very out of place and not much was said to indicate any legacy for the thing). All the refs should have an accessdate now too. I think it's good to go for GAN if you're up for that. Kung Fu Man (talk) 04:25, 26 November 2023 (UTC)

Cheers, really appreciate all your help in clearing up the article. I've come a long way in terms of editing so thanks for filling in the editing gaps on some of my older writing. I was hands off on the Crystal page following the protracted and messy demerge debate - it looks like the Vietnamese section was added interim and agree it's not a notable aspect of the game; perhaps it was once suggested to be merged with the Crystal article. I have a GAN up for The Elder Scrolls III: Tribunal but will progress Crystal as the next GAN I work on following that. Thanks again :) VRXCES (talk) 05:26, 26 November 2023 (UTC)

Invitation

Hello Vrxces/Archives/2023, we need experienced volunteers.
  • New Page Patrol is currently struggling to keep up with the influx of new articles. We could use a few extra hands on deck if you think you can help.
  • Reviewing/patrolling a page doesn't take much time but it requires a good understanding of Wikipedia policies and guidelines; Wikipedia needs experienced users to perform this task and there are precious few with the appropriate skills. Even a couple reviews a day can make a huge difference.
  • Kindly read the tutorial before making your decision (if it looks daunting, don't worry, it basically boils down to checking CSD, notability, and title). If this looks like something that you can do, please consider joining us.
  • If you would like to join the project and help out, please see the granting conditions. You can apply for the user-right HERE.
  • If you have questions, please feel free to drop a message at the reviewer's discussion board.
  • Cheers, and hope to see you around.

New page reviewer granted

Hi Vrxces. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers" user group. Please check back at the permissions page in case your user right is time-limited or probationary. This user group allows you to review new pages through the Curation system and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or nominate them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is vital to maintaining the integrity of the encyclopedia. If you have not already done so, you must read the tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the deletion policy. If you need any help or want to discuss the process, you are welcome to use the new page reviewer talk page or ask via the NPP Discord. In addition, please remember:

  • Be nice to new editors. They are usually not aware that they are doing anything wrong. Do make use of the message feature when tagging pages for maintenance so that they are aware.
  • You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted. Please be formal and polite in your approach to them – even if they are not.
  • If you are not sure what to do with a page, don't review it – just leave it for another reviewer.
  • Accuracy is more important than speed. Take your time to patrol each page, including checking for copyright violations using Earwig's copyright violation detector, checking for duplicate articles, and evaluating sources (both in the article, and if needed, via a Google search) for compliance with the general notability guideline.
  • Please review some of our flowcharts (1, 2) to help ensure you don't forget any steps.
  • Use the message feature to communicate with article creators and offer advice as much as possible.

The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you also may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In cases of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, or long-term inactivity, the right may be withdrawn at administrator discretion. If you can read any languages other than English, please add yourself to the list of new page reviewers with language proficiencies. signed, Rosguill talk 04:06, 19 December 2023 (UTC)
